Linksys Wireless-G Internet Video Camera (WVC54G) Fri Aug 5, 2005 8:25:21 AM#12539Perm Link
Linksys lists this camera under their 'Home Control' section in their product line up. It shouldn't be listed at all.
DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA... Why?
I've had alot of success in the past with Linksys router, switches, wireless routers, wireless access points, etc. I figured buying this camera would be a sure bet. Boy was I wrong. This is one of the few products that I purchased without first reviewing it on the Internet. If you search Google for 'WVC54G PROBLEM' you will see for yourself.
This camera has a nice feature that allows you to setup motion detection and have a short video clip (with audio) or an image emailed to you. I liked this feature because my phone has support for video/images, so I could get the comings and goings at my house. Unfortunately, it doesn't work. This camera also has problems with heat. The case that the unit is enclosed in needs holes or fans or something for heat dissipation. Everyday this camera goes offline at random times and reboots itself and it's due to heat. If you touch the plastic enclosure, it's as hot as a heatsink on an overclocked Athlon.
If you're thinking about going with a wireless camera like this, check out D-Link or go the professional route and get tilt/pan/zoom cameras from Canon or whoever else makes them.
I work in the alarm industry and I agree about the cheaper cameras. You should be looking for quality when dealing with access control or security in general. Pelco makes good cameras as well.
