My uncle didn't trust (and still doesn't trust) the stability or safety of Windows XP so he decided when we were building it to put in Windows 2000. I'm thinking about asking him if we can at least put in a spare hard drive with XP SP 2 on it when he comes over to visit next time (he lives in Maryland, and I live in a state which is not Maryland) so when Microsoft drops support for 2000 we can more easily switch to XP.

Michael: Jodie, how's my schedule look for today?
Jodie: You've got a conference and dinner party at the Japanese Embassy regarding wildlife protection.
Michael: Oh, yeah...sorry, but I'll have to cancel that. I'm heading out to save America!

That sucks about the motherboard being fried. What broke it?

That day there had been power outages around my neighborhood, and I never sprung for a surge protected power strip because I didn't think I needed one (due to lack of internet usage). The power went out at 4:30 ish while I was using AutoCAD. When it came back on, some sparks blew out of the mobo and it started to stink. The problem was that when it came back on all of the power in the house went into the computer (my two computers and my mothers being in on a seperate breaker switch, which I had gone down to reset thinking that was what happened, because the breakers in my house all turn off if the power goes out and forgot to turn back off when it didn't work) and it heated a couple of leads so much that they failed and started melting the actual plastic of the mobo. It was a spectacular (if a bit costly) spectacle though, with the sparks being incased in a plume of smoke being whirred around by the fans. It even set off a smoke alarm.
In summary? Well, it was my absent mindedness about forgetting to turn the breaker back off and ignorance regarding the power strip. The reason it didn't fry the other two computers was that they were surge-protected and weren't on when the power went out.
Edit: I forgot to mention that when the mobo went it took the front-mounted LCD temp. and fan adjustment screen with it, which I haven't replaced yet.

Wow. That sucks. You should invest in a good UPS to protect your computer. I never trust anything without a UPS.

Man, that's awesome!

I did something like that. I touched my SB AWE64 with my headphones (the ones with metal for the band) and it shot a spark out from the card while I was looking at it. AWESOME.

Sucks about the hardware, though.

A new update: Yesterday, while testing my EEPROM reader for the Genesis, it fried itself out. An explanation is under "Notes." Nothing too expensive, but I have to build another one now, and buy another copy of Super Manaco GP. I also now have an 8 plug surge protector.

An uninterruptible power supply will condition the power going into your computer so (hopefully) spikes, surges, and dips won't occur.

It's like a PC-plug only power strip? So, does it go into the computer or just sit outside of it?

I have a UPS for all my computers and some other electronic devices.

If you have DSL or cable, you should invest in surge protection for those modems as well.

I've been looking at the prices of bigger HDD's falling, and I'm wondering if I should go for a bigger drive. I've managed to fill up 184 gigs of the 250 I have with various things (mostly DVD's and game back-ups), so I was wondering whether I should spring for a bigger one. Cost really isn't much of an object so long as it slots under a grand (it's one of my months that I have nothing to buy, so I'm naturally hording money).

The problem is though that I only have room for three more HDD's, and I want to have wiggle room to upgrade in the future. That, and setting up RAID arrays annoys me greatly. I wouldn't have done it with the Raptors if they weren't so bloody fast.

The RAID 0 you got with the raptors is asking for trouble with data loss.

I really do like the way your system is setup. Well, you could go with a RAID 5 array for redundancy and speed. Seriously, RAID 0 is just bad for data retention... plus those raptors die faster.

But it's so fast. The only reason I set it up for RAID 0 was because it was fast, and I really do not enjoy the time it takes to get a RAID array going. Besides, see journal post.
