Vivendi Universal Games gave a presentation to Wall Street today. Too much to report on everything said, but the big one was:
"All Blizzard franchises will become MMOGs."
All. They claim they have a model now to develop an MMOG in 3 years for $50 million. WoW cost 50 million euros and took 4 1/2 years.

Alas for those yearning for a marathon World of Starcraft session, Blizzard moved quickly to quash rumors of any non-WOW MMOGs. "No, that rumor is not true in regard to Blizzard," the company told GameSpot this morning. "We believe that the rumor circulating about this subject is based on a misinterpretation of information provided to industry analysts."
Blizzard also took pains to emphasize it has not become Vivendi's specialty MMOG developer. "We do not currently have any MMO development plans beyond the upcoming expansion for World of Warcraft, and furthermore, we don't have any intentions to focus on only one genre or platform with our future games," a rep told GameSpot. Indeed, Blizzard's jobs page has listings for both console and PC positions, although none mention any specific new titles by name.

Last night, "Drysc" told a thread of understandably excited WOWers the following: "I believe this was a misquote. We haven't announced any specific development plans beyond the upcoming expansion for World of Warcraft, and we don't have any intentions to focus on only one genre or platform with our future games."

Later, another Blizzard moderator, "Eno," issued a more vociferous denial. "Nothing in that rumor is true in regards to Blizzard.," he said in a post. "If I had to guess, there was some confusion between what Vivendi has planned for its its game division versus what Blizzard has planned. While Blizzard is owned by Vivendi, their game division operates separately from Blizzard."

Just release the stupid game and don't make it a MMORPG!

I really hope they don't do a "World of Starcraft" game, but with World of Warcraft subscripitons still rising and approaching 7 million you could see why they might want to. Then again, they aleady have over 50% of the MMORPG market share, would they really want to lay out all then money to setup another one just to compete with themselves? I think they would be best off making kick ass RTS games and just continue to add content and upgrade to WoW.
