The EPA is changing the way MPG is done with their rating system in 2008. <a href="http://www.commondreams.org/headlines06/1212-05.htm">They are also requiring medium-duty trucks to have ratings posted as well</a>.

The new system will use more high-speed driving, partly in 20-degree cold. Air conditioning will be on some portion of each driving cycle, and there will be more stop-and-go and rapid-acceleration driving. The mileage for gas-electric hybrids probably will be 20% to 30% lower than present estimates for city driving and 10% to 20% lower on the highway. These vehicles quickly lose their all-electric advantage when operated in cold weather or quickly accelerated, Wehrum said.

Well it's about time they did this. The current MPG ratings are incredibly inaccurate, since they are operated and measured in an ideal situation. This should make those ratings more accurate, which is indeed a good thing, but I doubt that the Prius will keep its 60 MPG rating after this or for that matter any other car on the market. I only wish it had gone into affect sooner, since it would have been of great help in making a purchase.

The Prius will drop about 10MPG total.

They are removing the electric only portions of the test as well.

Even so, you need to research what other drivers get and real reviews instead of government specs.

2014 is going to be a good year. More content, more streamlining. Be a part of history!

Of course that is true, but having an extra review to draw from is never a bad thing in making a decision even when the review is a bit skewed. The current MPG rating were so skewed though, that they prove to be utterly useless in such a comparison so it is an improvement, albeit not a big one though it wasn't the only thing I took into account by far.

I've found that the EPA MPG rating were a good point for comparison even though they may not be exactly correct.

What is the REALLY good news is making them slap MPG ratings on medium-duty trucks.
