I hate ATI and FGLRX Sat May 19, 2007 7:35:30 PM#38174Perm Link
Until ATI has proper open source drivers, I will only be recommending Nvidia (which has binary drivers that work, at least). I tried to get the fglrx driver installed for hours already and X just refuses to boot after enabling the driver. Changing back to the 'ati' driver fixes the problem of X not loading, but the generic 'ati' driver does not provide 3D for my X700. I may want to trade my X700 and X800GTO16 for comparable Nvidia cards if anyone is interested.
I suggest you stay away from ATI/AMD until they resolve the ridiculous situation. And I have to admit that I'm spoiled by Beryl and not being able to run it is not what I want to do anymore.
2014 is going to be a good year. More content, more streamlining. Be a part of history!
I, too, have regular problems with ATI's cards. I plan a whole day for getting all the hardware to work on a new system, whether new hardware or trying out a new OS. However...working on it for a few hours...documenting everything as you go along...could prove useful for future projects.
I dunno why you'd use Beryl; I thought you used Linux for stability?

I haven't seen anything except lack of swapspace (that was my fault, unrelated to any software ;-)) crash X11 for a long time. Beryl can crash, but it doesn't take anything with it.
