Inuyasha: Meet the parents Old Wed Jul 28, 2004 10:30:21 AM #9389 Perm Link
It's confirmed from the movie A Sword to Conquer All that Inuyasha's mother's name is Izayoi (her name is a phase of the moon, I can't exactly reacall but it means something like 'pausing moon'). The only canon we have for Inuyasha's father is Inu no Taishou (meaning leader of dog) and absolutely nothing on Sesshoumaru's mother. It might be farfetched but I think she may be the one that Sesshoumaru inherited the crescent on his head from since there is no such mark on Inu no Taishou. A friend of mine who can speak Japanese says that Sesshoumaru means 'Killing Blade' and I've also heard it means 'Killing Perfection' and another (a little ridiculous) 'Killing Beauty'.
It is known that Inu no Taishou was a inu taiyoukai who ruled the west (who apparently liked to eat cows). He died the day Inuyasha was born and but it appears he took precautions knowing that Sesshoumaru and Inuyasha would feud--he made the swords Tensaiga and Tessaiga which would prevent Inuyasha or Sesshoumaru from ever killing each other.
Judging from the way that Izayoi talks it can be surmised that she was either of nobility or of a mild personality--maybe even both.
And from all that I have seen in the Manga and the movie, I do not think that Inu-papa and Izayoi were married.
That's all the info I have on the parents. *bow bow*

I've heard Sesshoumaru means "The Killing Pill"...but my subs suck ass :3

I saw that movie in theaters =D I feel so special! From what I understand(and I can't understand Japanese XD) they weren't married. Probably because humans and demons HATE each other with a burning passion. This might be why that guy killed her in the beginning. Partially because of what she did(loved a demon) and partially because she bore the demon's child.
I think she was royal, because she appeared to live in a castle.

Huh? Signature? What's going on with that signature?

I can't really speak Japanese but I like translating names and I can speak a few key phrases. Killing pill sounds stupid anywayz. I think she was in the bad guys castle anyways.

Edit: 'Killing Pill' is the Chinese translation of Sesshoumaru's name.

double posting, I know Old Tue Aug 3, 2004 6:57:27 PM #9477 Perm Link
I know every Inuyasha character of significance's name meaning. I'm hate crappy name translations. Some of them so absurd it almost sounds like somebody just randomly made them up.
*sigh* I'm so lame for posting this.

Inuyasha- Inu=Dog Yasha=Male Demon/(in the 1400-1500s it was used) Pagan Devil, Man Eating Devil
Kagome- I've heard a lot of people say it 'litterally translates' into Everlasting Light. But that doesn't add up to what I've found.
Kikyo- A chinese bell flower
Midoriko- Green Child
Kaede- Maple Tree/Leaf
Shippo- Tail
Miroku- Maitreya (a Buddhist monk)
Sango- Coral
Kohaku- Amber
Kilala- Mica (precious stone)
Naraku- Hell
Onigumo- Monster/Ogre/Demon Spider
Kagura- Corpse Dance of the Goddess Uzume
Kanna- In Latin it means Channel
Sesshomaru- Extinguish Life/Killing Circle, Killing -maru (suffix for masculine names often is dropped when one reaches adult hood)
Jaken- evil view/opinion
Rin- (this one is hard) i've heard it 'litterally translates' into bringer of life but it doesn't add up to what I've found. I've also heard it means companion.
Koga= I've heard it means 'steel fang' but I haven't really investigated it cause I guess I really haven't been interested in Koga.
Toutousai- Blades Worshiper

I knew those :3 However, some of them look odd to me O_o I used to know all of them, but time makes people forget...

Kagome means basket XD There's also a song called "Kagome, Kagome" which I think she's named after.

Miroku is the Japanese name for the Buddha of the future(or past of present...I can't remember)

Huh? Signature? What's going on with that signature?

I don't think you can find it anywhere...it's more like...Ring Around the Rosie. It's a song children sing while playing a game that I can't recall how you play.

Wow good job on the both of you Wink. I'm really impressed with the research. Characters fit very well with the meaning of their name. Cept maybe Sango, Kohaku, and Kilala, but since they're both translated as precious stones it shows how they're linked which is pretty cool too.

There is no 'l' in the japanese language. It's interchangably 'l' and 'r', but it's more of an 'r'. The name IS Kirara, if you listen to how they say it in the original version you'd notice that. Kilala is an awkward and, in my opinion, stupid dub version of the name. It sounds quite childish with the 'l''s so I'm not particularly fond of the american version. I prefer the japanese version and will continue to correct those using 'l' because it's not correct =P Feel free to continue doing so, just know I'll be pestering you about it.

I've noticed in my Japanese/English dictionary that Miroku seems to be related to the word Miryoku which means enchanting and something else. I can't remember what. Both of the meanings relate to Miroku. I think the other meaning has something to do with his relations with women or sth.

OoPart: an artifact that "seems" to be out of context with the surrounding evidence.
Ex.: A fossilized footprint of a human child containing a fossil of a crushed trilobite. Pronounced O-Part.

Yea i actually knew about the "r" and "l" being interchangeable in japanese, just wasnt really paying much attention when i was typing it. Its like the character Alucard in Hellsing. People always get it confused between Alucard and Arucard. Alucard is supposed to be the exact english translation cuz it spells Dracula backwards. But they screwed up on the translation in the subtitles and often spelled him with an "r". Alrite thats enough on hellsing heh... back on topic with Inuyasha Huge Grin

Sesshou means 'to kill', 'destroy, or 'extinguish life'. -maru is a suffic for young males. maru means circle and also means penis. maru means pill in chinese. So it can be translated as all of these>>>>>
Extinguish Life Circle (Yet he is the master of Tenseiga)
Destoyer -Young Man (the -maru might be there to show that he a young demon)
Destroyer Penis (well... I don't know what to say about thatWink
Killing Pill (this is in chinese. sounds stupid if you ask me.)

I just found another anime called Kagome, Kagome! and they translate the name Kagome as meaning 'sacrifice'. Makes sense.
I wouldn't mind if Inuyasha died, or even went to hell for that matter, but I would be ruined on Takahashi's comics if Kagome died.
