This is a huge move for the industry. <a href="http://www.adobe.com/openscreenproject/">Adobe will release specifications and relinquish the licensing fees/restrictions for their Flash based formats</a>. This move allows anyone to write and show content in this format with ease (if you understand the code). Adobe is not releasing their player or writing software, just the formats.

The Open Screen Project is working to enable a consistent runtime environment – taking advantage of Adobe Flash Player and, in the future, Adobe AIR -- that will remove barriers for developers and designers as they publish content and applications across desktops and consumer devices, including phones, mobile internet devices (MIDs), and set top boxes. The Open Screen Project will address potential technology fragmentation by allowing the runtime technology to be updated seamlessly over the air on mobile devices. So, what does this mean? That there will be alternatives to Flash (the program) on the horizon when it comes to Flash (the scripting language) players/creators, or that flash movies will become more widespread, or both?

Both.

For open operating systems, there are players that already play swf and flv files with ease. One of them is Gnash.

We'll start to see some Flash development projects soon.

2014 is going to be a good year. More content, more streamlining. Be a part of history!

Oh you mean the file you get when your rip a flash video?
More players for that than the alredy online version?
