Sega are a bunch of conniving liars, preying on my childhood dreams. Old Thu Feb 10, 2011 11:27:18 PM #148764 Perm Link
When I was little, I was living the HD dream. Genesis does what Nintendon't, and what Nintendon't do is HD graphics. Even today!

But alas: I was but a child. I couldn't afford a mythical HDTV. Also, they didn't exist. But one day, I knew. One day. I said "Sega, I will view your games in all H of the glorious D." I knew...

However, what I owned to date was merely a JVC X'Eye. Fantastic though the system may be, with its fancy karaoke functions, built-in Sega CD unit with much faster CD drive, twin A/V out, and more compact design; it did not promise HD. It didn't even promise S-Video, because JVC felt the need to cut costs on something that originally cost $600. So sadly, I had to hang up my dreams once again.

However! While looking for a center speakers at a thrift shop, I happened upon it. The spitting image of the system I had as a young boy. The Model 1 Sega Genesis, with High Definiton Graphics and the Sonic 1 pack-in. It even came with the original box and cords, all for $5. And it is non-TMSS!

Now, I have been technologically relevant for a month now (Look, a PS3 with a non-exploded hard drive. How quaint.). However! A problem occurred: The TV did not support native RGB (and certainly didn't support SCART), the Highest of all Definitions. My soul... crushed.

But then, salvation! I saw it! The RGB transcoder. The answer to my prayers. And so it was ordered. And so it was awaited. And so it arrived.

And today it came. In the mail. I was ecstatic. Finally, the ability to play my Genny games in the High Definition that they demanded. I set everything up. Ran the SCART cable out of the back of the Genny and into the converter. Ran the converter into the TV. I popped in the greatest game ever made by man to see how awesome it truly looked.

And then...

240p? That's not HD! That's not even SD!

SEGA WWHHHHHYYYYY!

Or, to put it another way:

I bought a SCART cable for my Genny, and an RGB transcoder for my TV. I wanted one without a scaler so I could make sure that I didn't get one that forces widescreen or introduces lag. I took a huge gamble on it not working, but luckily my TV supports 240p natively (which is a fairly rare occurrence, especially for LCDs). Since that is the case, I'm gonna drag out my Saturn and buy a SCART cable for that too. And my Genny looks fantastic now.

How fantastic?

This fantastic:

And yes, the SCART cable that I bought was actually for my X'Eye rather than my Model 1. I just bought that because.

Michael: Jodie, how's my schedule look for today?
Jodie: You've got a conference and dinner party at the Japanese Embassy regarding wildlife protection.
Michael: Oh, yeah...sorry, but I'll have to cancel that. I'm heading out to save America!

I'll stick to emulators now. I still gotta try that new Sonic 3K rom.

2014 is going to be a good year. More content, more streamlining. Be a part of history!

I only have a Genesis emulator on my phone (Gensoid for Android). I tap into the Phantasy Star series every now and again with it.

"I knew it. I'm surrounded by a$$holes!"
