From Thread: Nvidia 680i And Linux? Old Sun May 13, 2007 7:39:44 PM
Anyone using the 680i chipset with Linux? I plan on buying a Core 2 E6420 with some type of 680i motherboard and overclock the shit out of it just like my previous build.

This will be the first time I'll be dual booting to Linux on my main computer as well. Most of the computers in my house run Linux already, but my main has been Windows. I plan on getting Nvidia hardware because support is better under Linux. ATI/AMD need to get their act together.

I also plan on getting an 8600 series graphics card.

»The Internet Is Broken

I love how you find some quarks here and there on the internet. It seems the public internet has some private addresses that are routable. It would appear that at or near AT&T is providing routes for 10.x.y.z addresses which is rather rediculous considering that 10.x.y.z is a private address and should not be routed on the internet at all. I would have thought that Comcast or AT&T would have dropped the packets before going through their entire network. Here is a trace from my location in New Jersey to 10.21.1.1.

Code

Tracing route to 10.21.1.1 over a maximum of 30 hops

Think Comcast is nuts or something? You may be correct. Using my Linux webserver, hosted in Texas, I don't get any route to a 10.x.y.z address which is how it should be. Pretty crazy that stuff like this happens in some areas.

I'll also attach a trace to a different address from one of my Linux boxes. This is to 10.20.1.1.

»Red Hat Exchange

No it isn't an open source exchange server, it is Red Hat's place to sell open source software. Most of the software is free, but you pay for support.

Quote

The company announced the Red Hat Exchange in March while launching its Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, a major update to its core product. It announced the RHX launch Thursday at the Red Hat Summit in San Diego. The exchange makes Red Hat a stronger competitor to Microsoft and the company's top Linux rival, Novell, which sells Suse Linux Enterprise Server and a variety of server software packages. But it also means Red Hat steps more directly on the toes of business partners such as IBM, Oracle and SAP.

I take it you're better now?

No. I'm still comically sick and coughing, and my entire left lung is filled with the shit. But I'm starting medication tomorrow and it should be completely gone by the end of next week. I also got a nebulizer today. I'll put it this way: 3 Mondays ago, I was so sick I literally could hardly move. Now, I can move around and even have started to ride my bike again, but it comes with the cost that I am constantly coughing and need water.

From Thread: Dell To Offer Linux Pre-installed Old Sat May 5, 2007 6:41:14 PM
Ubuntu is more notable than most distros to everyday Linux users, but it rarely comes up independently outside of more technical forums. It's backer may be more aggressive and coordinated than either the community or commercially managed distributions, but to someone following mediums like PC World, it's appears less on the radar than the generic reference to "Linux."

I just popped in and saw only the article about Silverlight/Mono reference to Linux (How many average PC users even know what Mono is?). The top article when I search for Linux is an Ubuntu Fiesty review. If you were now just considering trying Linux, despite the positive review, I think it would throw you off altogether. "Hey, if you want it to look cool, you only have to...."

I'm just not convinced this is the moment in time where the transition will occur. I remember saying in 2002 that it would be about 2007 that you might have the option, as an inexperienced user, to select Linux, but I'll bet it'll remain by-request-only for people in the know. Before, I thought with the then growth of Transmeta and Crossover, someone would take the opportunity to vendorise some distribution. Redmond Linux was going toward Lycoris and was about to compete head on with the then Lindows (now Linspire) distribution for the average first time user, it made sense to believe it.

Based on my 6 months of Gateway-WinMe experience, I could see it being real easy for a vendor to go all out on this system, but I really don't think there's going to be any effort here to do something to push this idea on people. It would be easy for every vendor to twist Linux into inherent support contracts and recurring business (and only a 3-4 years for most people to realise how to make their systems independent of us1.deb.dell.com/dimension/9200/ archive). However, there has been no solid attempt to do anything like this to date.

These are just my experience, and I got there first :oP

From Thread: Idol gives back Old Wed May 2, 2007 7:47:13 AM
Because money = food and clothing? They're not handing them dollar bills, the money is used to fund things such as schools and the groups that provide the food.

The point of fundraisers is to empower the everyman to do something helpful. People are more inclined to give money when a cause is shoved in their face than when they have to go hunting for the organization (there already are organizations and fundraisers to aid Africa and the victims of Hurricane Katrina, but most people don't know about them or are just not prompted to think about donating). Also, people are more likely to give when people they like/look up to encourage it. Oh, and selfish as it is, most people want something in return for doing something - a show or perhaps to see their favorite contestant not get kicked off (hence the voting itself raising money).

No American Idol would mean: A) no money to donate - that show is damn popular and gets a lot of sponsors because of it. And B) no way to get the word out. Millions of people watch American Idol, and that's millions of people being made aware of the cause. Popular shows like this are going to exist anyway, so it's better that they try and do something good while they're on.
