»Gaim Now Pidgen IM

Tragic news as Gaim is renamed to Pidgen IM. There goes me saying it is better than AIM. Another grave misuse of IP and copyright laws.

Quote

Many years ago, when this project was first started, it was called "GTK+ AOL Instant Messenger." AOL naturally complained, and Mark Spencer changed the name to "Gaim." AOL was appeased, and no one really ever heard of it because there were very few users back then.
A few years passed, AOL trademarked "AIM," and started refering to their IM services under that name. They complained. The issue was brought up on Slashdot, and the developers at the time got some legal support. That legal support advised that the ongoing discussions with AOL be kept confidential until fully settled, and so it remained. Everyone thought the issue went away then. It sorta did, in that AOL stopped responding to the legal support for a while.
Our legal support has changed several times, and each group of lawyers have recommended silence & secrecy. Around the time of the first 2.0.0 beta, AOL came back into our lives in a very strong way, this time threatening to sue Sean.
This represents a clear pattern. AOL received more pushback than they expected, and would sort of let things stand for a while. They they woudl threaten a different Gaim developer. Each time a new Gaim developer was threatened, we had to look at new legal support.

»Federal Judge rules vonage can\'t sign up any new customers...

Apparently, violating patents is a bad thing. Someone had better tell Microsoft!

Quote

A federal judge today issued an injunction that would bar Internet phone company Vonage from signing up additional customers as punishment for infringing on patents held by Verizon Communications.

Vonage, of Holmdel, planned an immediate appeal.

This actually sounds pretty cool, although between C&C and supcom I don't have much time for other games...

Quote

Aliens are out to destroy the Earth and only you can stop them.

It’s a familiar video game plot. But in this case you must complete seven chemistry-based challenges in order to blow up their reactor and save the world. Sound like fun?

Good because that’s your homework.

From Thread: Supreme Commander v. C&C 3 Old Fri Apr 6, 2007 6:59:37 PM
After further playing C&C I do appreciate the single player aspect, but the multiplayer is still weak. Supcom really gets its legs in multiplayer, I will most likely be playing this game years from now. C&C is truely a sequel of the series, the next iteneration of RTS in the series. Supcom is more of the next generation of RTS games, it has a MUCH better interface, resource management, and balance. Plus they will include user created maps in ranked online play.

»Vista Has \"Great\" Security

The latest critical Windows patch proves it. Vista is a flop and always will be. I've switched over many of my systems to flavors of Linux and plan to move them totally this year.

Quote

"As far as software vulnerabilities go, Vista's cover is blown," said Nand Mulchandani, a vice president at Determina, the company that discovered the latest security bug. "It is not Superman; it is just a human being. It is just software. Vista is going to be very similar to the other operating systems Microsoft has delivered in terms of bugs." Microsoft officially launched Vista for consumers in January, promoting the operating system as the most secure version of Windows yet. It is the first client version of Windows built with security in mind, meaning that it should have fewer coding errors that might be exploited in attacks, Microsoft has said.

From Thread: x86 ISA Still Strong Old Tue Apr 3, 2007 4:53:54 AM

»x86 ISA Still Strong

It is simply amazing to see that due to many pieces of legacy software, we are stuck with chips that are based on 1970's technology. The 8086 was released in 1978 and introduced the x86 architecture. Years and years later, we are still using it.

Quote

"It was originally thought about as an eight-bit chip (Intel's and Advanced Micro Devices' current chips are 64-bits) designed to run spreadsheets," said Phil Hester, chief technology officer at AMD. Accordingly, the original design lacked support for, among other things, an appropriate number of general-purpose registers that would be needed for the modern computing era. Registers are essentially small holding stations for data as it awaits processing, and general-purpose registers are useful because they can store either data or an address where that data is stored. As the number of people using PCs made by IBM and so-called clone manufacturers grew, the x86 became the irreplaceable heart of the PC market. In the mid-1990s, Intel's entry into the server market with x86 chips cemented the ISA's dominance. Today, more than 90 percent of all servers shipped in the world use an x86 processor from either Intel or AMD.

From Thread: EMI Offers DRM-Free Music Old Mon Apr 2, 2007 7:50:55 AM
There is a new news item posted at »ASE Labs

»EMI Offers DRM-Free Music

EMI will offer non-DRMed music over Apple's iTunes Music Store. This is a great thing for consumers and should show the stupid music and media cartels that buying DRMed content is not what consumers want.

Quote

Consumers who have already purchased EMI tracks containing Apple's FairPlay copy protection will be able to upgrade them to the premium version for 30 cents, EMI said. Full albums in DRM-free form can be bought at the same price as standard iTunes albums. "We are committed to embracing change, and to developing products and services that consumers really want to buy," said Eric Nicoli, chief executive of EMI. Nicoli cited internal EMI tests in which higher-quality, DRM-free songs outsold its lower-quality, copy-protected counterparts 10-to-1.

I really love the show and it would be a shame if it got cancelled. It has some of the best writing and doesn't take itself too seriously. I find it has some good commentary that's really insightful and all in all it has those episodes that just make you feel good at the end of them and then a couple that leave you feeling a little down, which is refreshing.
