»Seagate\'s Most Secure Hard Drive.....Ever

Seagate has just produced the most advanced hard drive security. It uses a whole lot of authentication and encryption techniques. Seems pretty good to me, but maybe just a little overkill for the average user. It will be geared more towards the government and any private corporations that carry sensitive data. Using this tech, the company or government will also no longer have to publicly release information about lost or stolen laptops. Very interesting...... http://news.com.com/2100-1029_3-6166180.html?part=rss&tag=2547-1_3-0-20&subj=news

Quote

"The Seagate drives are equipped with the company's new "DriveTrust" technology, which the company promotes as a simpler way to safeguard data stored on laptops. The encryption technology is designed to make life tougher for computer thieves and to prevent embarrassing breaches. Seagate is also in discussions with major, brand name laptop makers and expects to announce more deals for its new hard drive midyear.

From Thread: Apple New Notebooks May Use Flash Hard Drives Old Mon Mar 12, 2007 4:27:14 AM
There is a new news item posted at »ASE Labs

»Apple New Notebooks May Use Flash Hard Drives

Apple is going to create a smaller notebook computer that will use flash memory (I guess this will be competing with tablet PCs). Obviously this has been done with the OLPC project, however, I think that they will be the first mainstream computer manufacturer to offer it. I'm sure it will be a bit more expensive. It's will also be featuring a more lightweight version of OSX..... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17521893/

Quote

"The maker of the popular iPod music player and Macintosh computers hopes to introduce so-called flash memory in small computers known as subnotebooks in the second half of 2007, Shaw Wu, an analyst at American Technology Research who has a "buy" rating on Apple shares and does not own any stock, said in investor notes Wednesday and Thursday. A shift to flash memory in place of much slower hard-disk drives would eliminate one headache for consumers: lengthy start-up times when turning on computers. Apple, known as a technology innovator, would be among the first personal computer makers to use flash memory for storing data in computers, a step that some chip memory makers, including Micron Technology Inc., have said is inevitable as prices for flash decline and storage capacity increases."

From Thread: Big Beasts And Small Genomes Old Sun Mar 11, 2007 11:54:40 PM
A recent study has extrapolated the genome size of dinosaurs who lived from about 230 to 65 million years ago. This extrapolation was made from osteocytes (bone cells) found in fossils and comparing with various living species, mostly birds. The findings are somehow surprising, as the genome size was determined to be quite small for such large animals.

Quote

But don't worry, T-rex fans. Having a small genome doesn't imply inferiority. As the researchers noted, a lungfish has a bigger genome than a human.

The link is indeed said to have been confirmed in the article. If you read the original paper (I don't remember in which journal it was published), it will give you even more details. I appreciate your critical mind, though. That's what science is about. Smile

And yes, we need more pirates to quench global warming. The evidence is there and governments worldwide should do something. May the Flying Spaghetti Monster touch you with His Noodly Appendage. Wink

OO is a great alternative but it can't compare to MSO. Although the difference between the two is hard to justify spending the money.

This is very true. Over a short period of time OpenOffice has come quite a long way. There are still things to be done and features need to be implemented but as of now for basic users it works quite well.

what do you mean by that ?

More like looks better than any Windows so far IMHO

Said By dexaroni

Neat widgets (RSS, Clock, Photo album)

Like that's a novelty. SuperKaramba, gDesklets, aDesklets and OSX's thing have existed for ages

Windows XP... duh.

Instead of having a games list, you have an arcade section, which shows how far you are in the game, what the esrb rating is, etc, then you click on the game you want to play in that.

Yeah, looks better than any other windows so far. AND OSX AND Ubuntu... sure, those CAN look far better, but as far as default gui goes, Vista takes the cake.

And widgets are a novelty. Whats your point?

From what the article states, it looks more that the tooth-brushing motion triggers mild seizures. This is anyway a rare event and only contributes to the scientists' understanding of the disease. The more we know about it, the closer we'll get to a proper cure.

From Thread: Darwin Vs. Freud: How The Brain Evolved Sibling Recognition Old Sat Mar 10, 2007 3:51:06 AM
According to the study, the 'wiring' in the brain that allows for sibling recognition starts very early and carries on as the child grows up. So, even for an older sibling, seeing the younger one being taken care of by the parents sends the information to the brain for sibling recognition. The reported cases of incest between siblings are most probably pathological and due to an absence of the required 'wiring'. Now, it would be interesting to determine what caused it.

Just a little thing: When Halo was ported to the PC, it was miles better than the original game simply because of the mouse and keyboard support (and Halo was actually quite good in the controls department). The same will probably apply to GoW.
To conclude? Build up the compy.

The threat of an injunction and a long legal battle could adversely impact the company's sales, as new customers may be reluctant to sign up for a service that could be shut down. That's what happened to Research in Motion, the maker of the Blackberry email devices and service. In 2002, a jury found that RIM had infringed on patents held by the patent holding company NTP. A judge then imposed an injunction, which was stayed pending RIM's appeals. The situation came to a head some three and a half years later when the judge in the case was about to impose the injunction. In the eleventh hour, RIM and NTP settled the case. But the ongoing threat of a shutdown spooked potential customers, causing RIM's sales to dip during the quarter preceding the settlement, RIM said after the case was settled.

I'd suggest the RIAA isn't ruining anyone's education by penalizing people who break the law.

What's wrong with downloading a free tune if it's offered free by the artist, otherwise pay the 99 cents?

Besides the fact you can only authorize 5 installs of XP and the quality sucks from iTunes' store?

Who says you're using XP, and what would that have to do with it?

And iTunes isn't the only place to buy an MP3. Do you shoplift CDs?

Kind of like how there's glitching in Gears of War?

Not exactly. Exploiting glitches in GoW or Halo 2 is just you using a problem with the game to your advantage.
Modding the game means physically altering some part of the ay it runs so you have an advantage. I think that was why the SOCOM cheats were pulled off of the Gameshark website.

Oh, alright. That makes sense.
Heh. Gameshark. My brother always used to try and get those codes.

I've tested this product and it's a piece of crap. The entire idea of this product is awesome. However, even if you implement the suggestions for performance gains, this product is slow. It takes forever to install any programs on it. I would recommend that they fix the performance issues of the product before they sell it for $50. I wouldn't use this for free at this stage.

Well, Mars has had what the scientists call a "wet period" between 4.5 billion and 3.7 billion years ago. It is possible that life has appeared then, and gone extinct due to the harsher conditions and evaporation of the water. Or maybe it evolved to face a new environment, who knows?

There's a recent and relevant article in the New Scientist about Mars's "wet" past: "Surging groundwater solves Martian \'evaporite\' mystery"
