From Thread: Reiser wants to sell Namesys Old Sat Dec 30, 2006 4:51:00 PM
that sucks.

The state wants to prove him guilty, which is a process in which Reiser can be squashed easily if he has no good defence. This is no balanced situation - the state is forcing him to put all he has into not being sqashed on the spot. Technically, Reiser remains an innocent man until he is proven guilty. If he is not proven guilty, he will be a wreck of a man who was destroyed by an unjust system on the off-chance that he might have commited murder.

From Thread: Thinking about building a new system... Old Sat Dec 30, 2006 7:15:23 AM
Welcome back to the forums. You've got many options with that budget.

Right now, the Core 2 Duo is a great price/performance chip. I'm running a E6400 (2.13GHz) at 2.93GHz with no problems on a P5B Deluxe.

At this time, I would recommend a Core 2 Duo, the fastest you can get for your budget. Remember that these chips overclock well, but that is gravy.

As for motherboard, the P5B Deluxe from Asus is awesome. You maybe can wait till the Nvidia 680i/650i chipsets come out in force more. They are pretty expensive compared to the i965 chipset from Intel.

Memory: I am partial to Geil since I've had the stuff for over a year and it is rock solid and works with stock voltages. You can pick this 2GB platinum kit up for $200. I've used the PC2-5300 stuff, but the PC2-6400 is comparably priced.

Video: Let's see what others have to say... I like ATI myself. Nvidia has the top graphics chipset currently, though. You said that you aren't a gamer and from your post it doesn't look like you'll be doing much 3D work. I'd say a $150-$200 card from either company would be fine.

HDD: Good choices. I'd pick Seagate for the perpendicular technology lead. Are you thinking about RAID?

Sound Card: Agree with you about onboard sound. The X-Fi I hear is good.

PSU: Antec. They have a new Trio line that looks pretty good. Get a big power supply to be safe. At least 450W. http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=23550

Case: The Antec 900 looks yummy. It isn't metal, but it looks great. http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=15900

Speakers: I have the Logitech z640s and they sound great. You may want to look at much higher end models because the Klipsch are high end speakers.

I have a suggestion. Do not skimp on the monitor or input devices. These are the most important aspects of your computer... not the guts.

I watched Blood Diamond last night and really liked it. Great performances by Leonardo DiCaprio and Djimon Hounsou. Some of the violence shown can be quite shocking, but is neccessary to portray the brutality inflicted to the people of Sierra Leone.
I thought this movie was better than Hotel Rwanda.

From Thread: When Is It Time For Vista? Old Fri Dec 29, 2006 8:55:43 AM
There is a new news item posted at »ASE Labs

»When Is It Time For Vista?

NEVER. <a href="http://security.itworld.com/4940/061227vistaadopt/page_1.html">The world does not want to cater for Microsoft's new world order</a>. Throw Vista out the window and let's get a real operating system that truly OPERATES instead of limits the computer. When did an operating system's job include shutting down if it thinks I stole the software that I actually paid for?

Quote

Some of the applications that still aren't compatible with Vista include IBM Corp.'s Lotus Notes e-mail and collaboration suite; Cisco Systems Inc.'s and Check Point Software Technologies Ltd.'s VPN clients; Intuit Corp.'s accounting software QuickBooks 2006 and earlier versions; and anti-virus (AV) software from Trend Micro Inc. Intuit even took time in mid-December to warn QuickBooks users in a note that they should hold off on upgrading to Vista until after the U.S. tax season ends in April, citing compatibility with older versions of its software and "potential reliability issues" with Vista. IBM said Lotus Notes will support Vista by mid-2007; Lotus Notes 8, the next version of the suite, also will be available at that time on Vista. Cisco's VPN will support Vista some time in the first quarter of 2007. QuickBooks, Check Point's VPN client and Symantec and Trend Micro's AV software will support Vista following the consumer release. However, in some good news for users, McAfee Inc. already has Vista AV software on the market.

From Thread: New Xen Gives Better Graphics Support Old Thu Dec 28, 2006 12:20:32 PM
There is a new news item posted at »ASE Labs

»New Xen Gives Better Graphics Support

Xen now supports virtual frame buffers to pump graphics out to desktops. <a href="http://news.com.com/2100-1007_3-6146189.html">It only would do text mode emulation before</a>. These are good steps. It is far away from VMware, though.

Quote

Xen 3.0.4 changes this. By including what's called a virtual frame buffer, Xen's controlling "host" operating system can capture video data written to a specific part of memory and then send it to the display. The technology lets users see virtual machines through a graphical interface, a feat competitors such as EMC's VMware can already accomplish, rather than the text-based command line suitable chiefly for the technically proficient.

From Thread: AACS or HD and Blu-Ray DRM cracked Old Thu Dec 28, 2006 9:03:11 AM

Quote

Hi everyone.

I was not aware of anyone having done that, so I did.
BackupHDDVD is a tool to decrypt a AACS protected movie that you own, so you can play it back later using
an HDDVD player software.

This is the first version, and it's not very stable yet.

This software don't provide any cryptographic keys, so you have to add your own keys.

Watch:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_oZGYb92isE

Executable and source code:
http://rapidshare.com/files/8318838/BackupHDDVD.zip.html

Please read the FAQ before asking me any questions.

Merry Christmas everyone!

See why DRM is useless?

There is a new news item posted at »ASE Labs

»Heavy Hassium-270 Lives Long

This really heavy isotope of element 108 can last for 30 seconds. <a href="http://pubs.acs.org/cen/news/84/i52/8452hassium.html">Being able to last that long allows scientists to probe the atomic structure and other interesting items</a>.

Quote

Theoretical physicists predicted years ago that some nuclei of elements much more massive than uranium should survive for a relatively long time-possibly long enough to probe their chemical properties-if they could be synthesized. On the chart of nuclides, theoreticians pinpointed a region with coordinates corresponding to 114 protons and 184 neutrons and indicated that nuclei with those "magic" numbers of subatomic particles should lie at the center of an island of stability. The nuclear longevity, according to the models, is due to the closing of proton and neutron shells, which renders the particles stable against spontaneous fission much the same way that a filled outer electron shell endows noble gases with chemical inertness. Experimentalists, though, haven't yet found a route to reach the center of the island.
