This is gonna piss me off if they switch this soon. Talk about screwing over your customers.
You do realize the AM2 was just AMDs way to convert to DDR2 right?
Are you really surprised that the AM2 will have one short lifespan? In fact one of the shortest lifespans for a CPU socket.
AMD can't compete with Intel's Core2Duo when the AM2 is not new technology, and the Core2Duo is, since its just S939 CPUs with a DDR2 memory controller strapped on a different socket. If you wanna stay with AMD wait for the AM2+ or better yet the AM3.
Not to bash AMD as I like them more than Intel but the AM2 is a waste no matter how you look at it. If the AM2+ or AM3 doesn't bring anything to the table its a Core2Duo upgrade for moi.
I guess am2 is their way of testing their pu with ddr2. I think it's pretty much dead. I am not even sure how long would intel hold onto the socket 775 (it's been for a few years now). Not sure if intel has any plan to kill it and release new socket (which intel is quite well known for) with newer cpu after quad core. As for things stands now, I think Intel could hold onot 775 probably for at least a year or two since it will take amd sometime to catch up with the intel's lead.
Intel will be releasing a new socket as soon as they integrate the memory controller into the CPU. This is why AMD needed to change sockets. AM2 is only for DDR2 support as was said and any other change will bring about a change of socket.

Don't count AMD out. It's a big underdog. It may not have hte power of Intel but it does bring some innovation to the table. Don't forget they also got ATI, which maybe able to help bring other new ideas.
Not really. AMD has Hypertransport which Intel refuses to use. This is partly why AMD's multicore CPUs scale well as opposed to Intel's. AMD will start to implement generic vector processing units (as a response to taking over ATI) on their multicore CPUs and will extend the x86 ISA to include these new functions. Once this is done, standard graphics abstraction layers will emerge and the industry will be able to compete on every platform.

Oh don't get me wrong as I am not saying AMD is screwed; its the fact that they have to battle the Core2Duo, and Quad2duo chips and that their new 4x4 CPUs bombed didn't help them at all.
Since there is no point for AMD to battle it out in the dualcore the quadcore or whatever they have in the works would be their next plateau to accomplish. Since they already have dualcore CPUs, why battle the same fight when you can go to the next level right.
