Association adds faster UHS Speed Class to meet industry demand
SAN RAMON, Calif., Nov. 6, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The SD Association today announced a new high-performance option and symbol specifically designed to support a wide array of 4K2K television and video products. A new Ultra High Speed (UHS) Speed Class 3 (U3) symbol will indicate products capable of recording 4K2K video and will operate exclusively on SDXC UHS-I and UHS-II memory cards and devices and SDHC UHS-I and UHS-II memory cards and devices.
The UHS Speed Class 3 defines a sizzling fast 30 Megabytes per second constant minimum write speed to ensure high-quality video recordings. This means 4K2K video, live broadcasts and content can be recorded on high-performance cameras such as Digital Single Lens Reflex (D-SLR), Digital Single Lens Mirrorless (D-SLM), camcorders and video cameras and then played back smoothly. Consumers will benefit from a single card that is capable of meeting all of their video, photo, music, document and data storage needs.
"The world's favorite SD memory card continues to evolve and meet shifting industry needs," said Brian Kumagai, president of the SD Association. "Our new UHS Speed Class 3 standard will give consumers and businesses more flexibility and capability as the market shifts to 4K2K video formats. Both SDXC and SDHC memory card standards already offer the massive storage needed to support 4K2k video with enough room to store photos, music, documents and other data on a single portable card."
New devices offering the UHS Speed Class 3 will be backwards compatible and will work with existing SD memory cards. The SD Association continually meets the challenge of providing a comprehensive menu of standards to meet the needs of a wide variety of devices with different capabilities. Selected features are marked with performance symbols that appear on products to help users identify feature functionality.
UHS Bus Symbols:
UHS-I and UHS-II symbols indicate bus interface for data transfer. UHS Speed Class symbols, such as U1 and U3, indicate minimum write speeds for real-time video recording.
UHS- I bus speed makes the massive storage found on SDXC and SDHC memory cards manageable and even more portable. This symbol is used on SDXC and SDHC products capable of supporting data transfer speeds between the memory card and the device of up to 104 Megabytes per second. Users should pair their devices with memory cards having the same symbol for optimum performance.
UHS-II bus speed makes the massive storage found on SDXC and SDHC manageable and even more portable. This symbol is found on SDXC and SDHC products capable of supporting data transfer speeds between the memory card and the device of up to 312 Megabytes per second. Users should pair their devices with memory cards having the same symbol for optimum performance.
UHS Speed Class Symbols:
UHS Speed Class symbols are found on SDXC and SDHC products with either UHS- I or UHS-II symbols. The U1 denotes a 10 Megabytes per second minimum write speed, and U3 denotes 30 Megabytes per second minimum write speed. Users will achieve optimum video recording performance by pairing their devices with the appropriate SDXC or SDHC memory cards with the same marks.
Legacy Speed Class Symbols:
The existing Speed Class symbols for non-UHS SD bus mode (this includes non-UHS bus mode operation of UHS memory cards) are Class 2, Class 4, Class 6 and Class 10. They refer to the minimum write speed performance of the memory card for video recording. The symbols are found on SD, SDHC or SDXC memory cards and devices.
The SD Association is a global ecosystem of more than 1,000 technology companies charged with setting interoperable SD standards. Applitools Eyes - The First Cloud Service for Automated Visual Testing of Web, Mobile and Desktop Applications
TEL AVIV, Israel, November 6, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --
Applitools [http://www.applitools.com ], innovators in Automated Visual Testing, has
launched Applitools Eyes, the first Cloud Service for Automated Visual Testing of Web,
Mobile and Desktop applications, based on proprietary Cognitive Vision technology.
Adam Carmi, Co-Founder and VP R&D of Applitools, started the development of Applitools
Eyes as a result of his experience as an R&D manager in various companies. Adam recalls:
"We couldn't find a test automation tool that validates the correctness of the GUI of
applications we had developed. More often than not, testing the visual aspects of our apps
was the bottleneck in achieving the desired customer satisfaction levels and product
release deadlines. This challenge became even more critical when we had to test
applications on various browsers and mobile devices, with differing screen-resolutions and
form-factors." As a result of that experience Adam has developed Cognitive Vision
algorithms that allow application developers and testers to bridge that gap and automate
this process.
Gil Sever, Co-Founder and CEO of Applitools says: "In today's world, UI is the face of
any application and a key to successful user experience (UX). Applications must look good
on all web browsers and mobile devices in all screen-resolutions and form-factors. The
tremendous evolution in modern app environments such as multi-browser, multi-device,
Agile, Continuous Deployment and more, is posing new challenges to developers and testers
which are not being answered by any of the existing functional test automation tools."
Applitools Eyes Cloud Service enables users to automate Visual Testing, and can be
easily integrated with existing Functional Test Automation tools and ALM frameworks.
Applitools Eyes integrates with Selenium, Appium, Coded UI, QTP and more, and can be added
to automated tests written in any programing language.
Applitools Eyes has been previewed by testers, developers and industry experts, and
has already received acclaim. Applitools offers free accounts for developers and testers
of small apps and premium accounts for professional and enterprise users.

Some are, but they're accessorizing their interest with skepticism
NEW YORK, Nov. 6, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Wearable tech - small, wearable computer devices - is a pond many manufacturers seem interested in dipping their toes into lately, with several new products either recently to market or poised to launch in the immediate future. Most are either a watch/wristband or glasses/headset, though other types are on the horizon as well. But are Americans interested in such devices? Do they see them as potentially useful? And function aside, what about form? Do Americans think wearable tech can be stylish?
These are some of the results of The Harris Poll of 2,577 U.S. adults surveyed online between September 18 and 24, 2013 by Harris Interactive. (Full findings with data tables can be found here)
Overall, nearly half of Americans are at least a little interested (46%) in owning a watch or wristband type wearable tech device, with over one-fourth specifying that they are very or somewhat interested (27%). While nearly half are at least somewhat interested in some other type of device (46%; 26% very or somewhat interested), fewer show an interest in owning a wearable tech device in the headset/glasses vein (36% at least a little, 20% very or somewhat). But of course, different segments of the population show different levels of interest:
-- Interest in each type of wearable tech is strongest among Echo Boomers
(ages 18-35), followed by Gen Xers (ages 37-48). Using watch or
wristband type devices as an example:
-- Over six in ten (63%) Echo Boomers are at least a little interested
in owning such a devices, with nearly four in ten (37%) very or
somewhat interested.
-- Nearly half (47%) of Gen Xers are at least a little interested,
nearly three in ten (28%) very or somewhat so.
-- Fewer than four in ten (37%) Baby Boomers are at least a little
interested, roughly two in ten (21%) very or somewhat so.
-- Roughly one-third (32%) of Matures are at least a little interested,
with roughly two in ten (21%) saying they are very or somewhat
interested.
-- Interest is also consistently stronger among men than among women; more
specifically, over half of men are at least a little interested in
owning a watch or wristband type of wearable tech (52%, vs. 40% among
women) or some other type of wearable tech item (53%, also 40% among
women).
-- Those with children under 18 are also consistently more interested in
wearable tech than those without, with majorities at least a little
interested a watch or wristband type of wearable tech (59% among those
with children under 18, vs. 41% among those without) or some other type
(55% and 42%, respectively).
-- But perhaps the most noteworthy difference is the one that isn't there.
The bottom line is, tech - especially in emerging categories - doesn't
tend to come cheap. As such, the fact that income shows no consistent
relationship with interest in wearable tech may strike some as
surprising.
Form, function and fads
Regardless of whether they want to own wearable tech themselves, what do Americans think of the trend? Overall opinions seem to be mixed, but Americans seem to be leaning slightly in the direction of skepticism.
Roughly half of Americans believe wearable tech is just a fad (49%) and that it is not likely to become common, the way smartphones have (also 49%), with 35% and 37%, respectively, disagreeing. Skepticism is also the leading sentiment where usefulness is concerned: while four in ten Americans (40%) agree that that wearable tech could be useful for their lives, 47% disagree.
Opinions are more evenly split on the matter of whether wearable tech can be stylish, with 43% agreeing it can be and 41% disagreeing.
A bright spot for wearable tech is that fewer than four in ten Americans feel it needs to cannibalize an existing tech category in order to earn their interest, with 38% saying they would only be interested in wearable tech if it could replace something they already use, like a smartphone; 45% disagree with this sentiment.
Looking at specific segments, however, not all Americans are so skeptical of this new category:
-- The majority of Echo Boomers - and a higher percentage than that of any
other generation - believe that wearable tech can be stylish (53%, vs.
42% Gen Xers, 38% Baby Boomers and 33% Matures) and that it could be
useful for their lives (57%, 42%, 30% and 24%, respectively). However,
Echo Boomers are also more likely than Baby Boomers and Matures to say
they would only be interested in wearable tech if it could replace
something they already use, like a smartphone (46%, 32% and 34%,
respectively).
-- Men are more likely than women to believe that wearable tech is can be
stylish (47% men, 40% women) and that it can be useful for their lives
(46% and 34%, respectively).
-- Those with children under 18 are more likely than those without to
believe wearable tech can be stylish (51% with, 41% without) and useful
(51% and 36%, respectively), but are also more likely to say that they
would only be interested in wearable tech if it could replace something
they already use (47% and 35%, respectively).
In the end, Americans aren't yet displaying truly decisive opinions either for or against wearable tech, which may reflect a simple lack of clear understanding of the category as a whole. The variety of devices coming to market thus far, and of the inconsistency of roles they're designed to fill in consumers' lives, can make it hard for the public to wrap its head around just what these devices are all about. Many technologies, from digital music players to smartphones, have struggled to gain mainstream attention until that one lightning-in-a-bottle moment, when a device came along to truly showcase the category and paint a picture of where and how it could fit into and enhance consumers' day to day lives.

Methodology
This Harris Poll was conducted online within the United States between September 18 and 24, 2013 among 2,577 adults (aged 18 and over). Figures for age, sex, race/ethnicity, education, region and household income were weighted where necessary to bring them into line with their actual proportions in the population. Propensity score weighting was also used to adjust for respondents' propensity to be online.
All sample surveys and polls, whether or not they use probability sampling, are subject to multiple sources of error which are most often not possible to quantify or estimate, including sampling error, coverage error, error associated with nonresponse, error associated with question wording and response options, and post-survey weighting and adjustments. Therefore, Harris Interactive avoids the words "margin of error" as they are misleading. All that can be calculated are different possible sampling errors with different probabilities for pure, unweighted, random samples with 100% response rates. These are only theoretical because no published polls come close to this ideal.
Respondents for this survey were selected from among those who have agreed to participate in Harris Interactive surveys. The data have been weighted to reflect the composition of the adult population. Because the sample is based on those who agreed to participate in the Harris Interactive panel, no estimates of theoretical sampling error can be calculated.
These statements conform to the principles of disclosure of the National Council on Public Polls.

HEX3 to launch updated AppTag2 Laser Blaster via Indiegogo campaign
'AppTag Laser Blaster is using smartphones and companion apps to get gamers off the couch'
WANCHAI, Hong Kong, Nov. 5, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- HEX3, the company behind the AppTag Laser Blaster have launched an Indiegogo campaign to raise funds for the launch of AppTag 2 - a new, improved design that is generating excitement from gamers across the globe.
The AppTag is a laser tag device that uses infrared beams and sensors to fire and register shots which are transmitted to an attached smartphone. The device enables developers to integrate their shooter style Apps, will work with any smartphone and slot on top of any toy gun.
To date, more than 60,000 of the devices have been sold worldwide, enabling smartphones to become a real time gaming display, showing laser effects and targeting info.
According to inventor, Jon Atherton, the AppTag2 will be released before Christmas if he can raise the $20,000 required to get it across the line.
"AppTag brings to life the feeling of a video game that is traditionally played sitting down but the beauty of AppTag is that it allows players to get active, strategize, work together and engage with other players - up to 4048 of them!" Mr Atherton said.
"My team and I have been working hard on incorporating some great new features into the AppTag2. When we launched the first version (AppTag1), we had some issues with the older Bluetooth technology so we used a high frequency sound to connect the smartphones instead."
"We have now incorporated Bluetooth 4 into the AppTag2, along with a gyroscope, magnetometer and accelerometer, all new gameplay and updated weapons," he said.
"Our game servers also keep score, track player's health, ammo and enemy kills and update players screens in real time."
Atherton is confident that the AppTag2 will be a hit with the Indiegogo community and says one of the key reasons that he wants to launch before Christmas is to get kids off the couch. The ex-military man turned inventor is passionate about incorporating exercise into daily life and believes that gaming and exercise should go hand in hand.
The AppTag2 project will run on Indiegogo until December 2 2013. Atherton says that once it officially launches, it will be priced at $59, but Indiegogo backers will get the AppTag2 for half price ($27.50). Visit http://www.apptag.tv to find out more about the campaign.

LumaGlo Develops The World's First Bluetooth-Controlled, Fully Modular, Smart LED Lighting Strip
BEAVERTON, Ore., Nov. 5, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- LumaGlo announces launch of new product on http://www.Kickstarter.com.
With consumers eagerly adopting device-driven, hi-tech products more than ever, LumaGlo Freedom Lighting is right on time. This LED lighting strip system is fully customizable, allowing users the freedom to choose the length, color, pattern, intensity, even the power source--and it's all controlled from an iPhone or Android device.
LumaGlo developed a Bluetooth-enabled, LED strip controller that connects the phone wirelessly to the lights, allowing the user total control over their system. Turn on, off, dim, brighten, or even set timers. Users can choose up to 16 million colors, even in real time by dragging their finger along the color wheel. Each LED is individually addressable, giving the ability to choose dynamic patterns and color combinations. It comes in a variety of lengths, including 1ft, 2ft and 5ft, all of which are linkable up to 10ft. Greater lengths can be achieved at reduced brightness.
LED lighting strips are a brilliant invention that gives users the ability to illuminate spaces in ways that could never be done with the light bulb. However, the existing products on the market suffered severe limitations. They were controlled with a generic remote that only allowed the user to choose a handful of colors and simple patterns, and every LED had to be the same color. Stands weren't linkable and if you wanted a shorter length, it had to be cut, throwing a part of the investment away. "With today's technology, we couldn't figure out why those lights were still being controlled like the dark ages," explained Randy Lathrop, co-founder. "We knew there was a better way, and we began working to develop a product that solved all of those problems."
LumaGlo didn't stop there. They took it one step further and developed a modular power option. "Users can plug in a rechargeable battery and transform their installed applications to 'On the Go' portable uses. LumaGlo can be used to increase visibility, to be seen in clubs or at raves, decorate a skateboard or bike, or even use at events or ceremonies," explained Ward Ramsdell, co-founder. Other uses include under-cabinet lighting, accent lighting, hallway illumination, brightening retail space, and much more.
"What we're most excited about is that we've developed the first lighting system that is truly universal--it's installable AND wearable," said Jill Saucedo, Co-founder. "It can be used to decorate with light in the residential setting, attract customers in commercial spaces or gain visibility with the 'On the Go' portable options."

Toshiba Ushers in UFS, Compares and Contrasts to e-MMC
Evolution of Embedded Storage Creates Multiple Options, Use-Case Scenarios
IRVINE, Calif., Nov. 5, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc., (TAEC)*, a committed leader that collaborates with technology companies to create breakthrough designs, shares with designers what they need to know when it comes to choosing an embedded memory device for mobile applications. e-MMC(TM)([1]) continues to be the solution of choice, offering gigabyte (GB) storage, low power, an attractive cost/performance ratio, and broad industry interface support. Universal Flash Storage([2]) (UFS) is the next generation of embedded memory device to e-MMC, driving a significant boost in performance.
Toshiba, the industry leader in embedded memory, has achieved a number of important milestones and industry firsts. For example, the company recently announced the launch of its new embedded NAND flash memory modules featuring 19nm second generation process technology. In a new video, the second in a solution series that takes viewers inside memory design issues with straight talk from Toshiba's memory experts, Scott Beekman, director of managed NAND memory products for TAEC, explores the differences between e-MMC and UFS.
e-MMC has been broadly adopted by numerous applications including smartphones, tablets, games, servers, printers, and many more. e-MMC supports half duplexing, allowing either reading or writing, but not both to occur between the host processor and an e-MMC device and<s> </s>supports an interface speed of up to 400 MB/s([3]) for JEDEC standard Version 5.0.
UFS has a faster interface than e-MMC and more features to enhance overall system performance - with its key benefit being a significant boost in performance. UFS supports full duplexing, allowing both reading and writing to occur between the host processor and the UFS device at the same time, and supports an interface speed of up to 720 MB/s initially, with faster interfaces soon to follow.
"The sheer momentum of e-MMC in the market will likely mean that these two solutions will continue to exist in parallel for some time, with UFS initially supporting the needs of applications demanding higher performance, and typically at higher densities, and e-MMC supporting the needs of applications driven to maintain the lowest cost," Beekman noted. "Toshiba has been a leader in e-MMC from the beginning, and we will continue to innovate with both e-MMC and UFS as we look to the future."
Through proven commitment, lasting relationships and advanced, reliable electronic components, Toshiba enables its customers to create market-leading designs. Toshiba is the heartbeat within product breakthroughs from OEMs, ODMs, CMs, VARs, distributors and fabless chip companies worldwide. A committed electronic components leader, Toshiba designs and manufactures high-quality flash memory-based storage solutions, solid state drives (SSDs), hard disk drives (HDDs), discrete devices, advanced materials, medical tubes, custom SoCs/ASICs, imaging products, microcontrollers and wireless components that make possible today's leading smartphones, tablets, cameras, medical devices, automotive electronics, enterprise solutions and more.
Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. is an independent operating company owned by Toshiba America, Inc., a subsidiary of Toshiba Corporation, Japan's largest semiconductor manufacturer and the world's fifth largest semiconductor manufacturer (Gartner, 2012 Worldwide Semiconductor Revenue, April, 2013). deCarta and GreenOwl Mobile bring Audio Traffic Alerts to the Connected Driver
Narrowcast audio traffic alerts integrated into leading connected car platform
SAN JOSE, Calif. and MARKHAM, Ontario, Nov. 5, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- deCarta, Inc., the leading independent LBS technology company announced today that they have partnered with GreenOwl Mobile, creators of the TrafficAlert traffic reporting and media platform to integrate narrowcast audio traffic information into the deCarta Connected Car Platform. Through the partnership, drivers will get timely information about traffic conditions along the route, delivered in a non-distracting audio report. In addition to traffic conditions, the combination of GreenOwl traffic information and deCarta's Connected Car services will provide the driver with alternative routes to minimize traffic delays. This solution is available for immediate deployment by automotive OEMs, Tier 1 automotive suppliers and application developers.
Narrowcast traffic information is a major improvement over current broadcast methods because it allows the driver to get all relevant updates on road conditions ahead without having to filter through periodic traffic reports for the whole metropolitan area. These reports are delivered in a timely manner (within seconds of an incident or reduced traffic flow occurring). And, because they are audible, the driver can focus on the road without being distracted by a myriad of colored lines or cartoonish icons. In addition, the combination of GreenOwl's traffic content and deCarta's traffic-enabled routing engine gives the driver not just information about what is happening on the route ahead but also alternative routes that may save driving time.
"TrafficAlerts were developed specifically to help drivers avoid the clutter of broadcast traffic information and focus on what really matters, the road ahead," said Matt Man, CEO of GreenOwl Mobile. "deCarta's Connected Car platform has the same focus on the driver-centric experience. We look forward to bringing this combined solution to automotive customers."
"Our goal with the Connected Car platform has been to bring a combination of amazing location technology with content from the most innovative providers on the market. GreenOwl's narrowcast traffic alerts revolutionize the radio broadcast traffic service by making the information highly personalized to the driver's route.." said J. Kim Fennell, CEO of deCarta. "It is a great fit with our belief that the Connected Car is all about bringing relevant information to the driver in a useful manner."
deCarta's Connected Car Platform combines industry proven mapping, local search and navigation technologies combined with content from leading providers in a white-label platform. Fall In Love Again: New Df D-SLR Is Undeniably A Nikon With Legendary Performance And Timeless Design
Photo Pros and Enthusiasts Alike Will Embrace the Lightweight FX-Format Df D-SLR, Which Strikes the Ideal Balance of Classic Iconic Style and Advanced Imaging Technology
MELVILLE, N.Y., Nov. 5, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The new Nikon Df is a modern classic designed for those who have felt a connection to their camera, who revel in the idea of going out to photograph an unfamiliar location, and who know the effort and ultimate satisfaction that is part of getting the shot. Announced today, the Nikon Df is a unique, advanced-level D-SLR that harmonizes Nikon heritage and modern performance in a lightweight and very capable FX-format camera. The new Df pays homage to the enduring style and controls of Nikon's distinguished "F" series of 35mm film cameras, yet features technology similar to Nikon's professional flagship D4 D-SLR. Released alongside the similarly styled AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G Special Edition lens, Nikon's newest FX-format D-SLR presents a versatile and reliable option to help passionate photographers truly achieve their creative vision.
"Nikon cameras have played an important role in documenting world history for the better part of 50 years, and have earned their position as a reliable tool that pros and enthusiasts can count on. The Nikon Df represents much more than a storied legacy of cameras; it's more about giving the user a chance to truly enjoy the experience of taking amazing images," said Masahiro Horie, Director of Marketing and Planning, Nikon Inc. "The design is unwavering, and the features are the latest in Nikon imaging technology. The Df brings together the best of yesterday and today for advanced full frame photographers."
A Classically Styled, Thoroughly Modern Masterpiece
From a robust feel, to mechanical dials and finely detailed craftsmanship, the Df embodies the very best of Nikon's photographic legacy. The classically styled camera recalls design cues such as a recognizable pentaprism and top cover, which is now constructed of durable, lightweight magnesium alloy. The top of the camera features elegant yet sophisticated mechanical controls for settings, letting users feel the tactile reassurance of adjustments, such as a familiar click stop for shutter speed adjustment. Additional dedicated dials also control ISO, exposure compensation, release mode and exposure mode, while modern controls are also easily accessible. The intuitive control layout allows for quick and confident setting adjustment, yet retains a solid operational experience that "feels like a Nikon camera."
The Df has been designed with an emphasis on familiar intricate details made famous from previous generations, including the leather-textured top and grip, along with the body mounted shutter button with a threaded release port. The design also recalls the slenderness of the previous generation's cameras, making this the smallest and lightest FX-format camera in Nikon's lineup.
It isn't all about good looks though, as this enduring design is coupled with legendary performance to create a very capable and extremely appealing FX-format offering for professionals and enthusiasts. The 16.2-megapixel FX-format CMOS sensor of the Df is inherited from Nikon's professional flagship D-SLR, the D4. The large 36 x 23.9mm CMOS sensor is praised for its ability to produce amazing image quality in a wide variety of lighting conditions. Whether shooting landscapes, wildlife or weddings, the frames captured with the Df exhibit amazing clarity, accurate color and a broad dynamic range. In addition, Nikon's exclusive EXPEED 3 image processing engine helps propel image quality, yielding images with a natural color and depth, all while enhancing subtle and nuanced tones.
Additionally, like the professional Nikon D4, the Df performs well in a wide variety of challenging lighting conditions with an exceptionally wide ISO range from 100 to 12,800, expandable to a staggering ISO 204,800. The combination of low noise and wide range make this an appealing camera to take on the challenges faced by photojournalists and event photographers, as well as those who enjoy the pursuit of extracting otherwise impossible images using natural light.
A Feature Set for Passionate Photographers
The Nikon Df is engineered to enhance the experience of taking photos and represents a culmination of decades of experience and feedback from photographers in the field, the studio and the sidelines. From its proven AF system to modern connectivity and legacy lens compatibility, the Df contains the century's best photographic features for an enjoyable all-day shooting experience.
-- AF System: The convenience and precision of Nikon's 39-point AF system
is proof-positive of the benefits of modern technology. With 39
selectable AF points throughout the frame for precise focus, the Df also
features nine cross-type sensors, and seven AF points capable of working
down to f/8. Users can also choose from a variety of AF area modes to
match their shooting style: 9-point, 21-point, 39-point, 39-point with
3D Tracking and Auto Area AF.
-- Get the shot with 2016-Pixel 3D Matrix Metering and Scene Recognition
System: This Nikon system analyzes each shooting scenario and determines
proper camera settings, resulting in even exposures, accurate white
balance and precise AF. To capture action sports, wildlife and other
fast moving subjects, the Df has a continuous burst shooting rate of up
to 5.5 frames-per-second (fps).
-- Compose with a 3.2-inch LCD Display and Glass Pentaprism Viewfinder:
Users can easily compose through the high-resolution LCD screen or the
bright optical viewfinder. The LCD screen has 921K-dot resolution,
making it easy for users to adjust additional settings, review images or
compose using Live View. Using the glass optical viewfinder, users will
enjoy 100 percent accuracy and a bright field of view. What's more, the
shooting data presented through the viewfinder has also been updated and
digitized.
-- Connect and Share Instantly: Another modern touch allows users to
connect and share their images instantly using the optional WU-1a
Wireless Mobile Adapter(1). By connecting to a mobile device, users can
download and share images or remotely fire the camera.
-- Features for Creativity: Photographing dramatic monochrome or vivid
landscapes is easier with Nikon's Picture Controls, which allow for the
customization of color, saturation and tone. The Df also features
built-in High Dynamic Range (HDR) to combine multiple shots with
enhanced tonal range, and two to five-frame auto-bracketing. For maximum
control, images can also be captured in JPEG, TIFF or RAW file formats.
-- Support for a Storied NIKKOR Legacy: In addition to being compatible
with all current AF, AF-S, DX and AF-D NIKKOR lenses, the Df is also
compatible with classic Ai and non-Ai NIKKOR glass. Thanks to a new

A Classic FX-Format Special Edition NIKKOR Prime
The new AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G Special Edition lens is the result of classic NIKKOR styling combined with today's optics to create the ideal focal length companion lens for the Df. This lens is ideal for everyday portraiture, landscapes and casual photography, but offers a wide aperture and seven-blade diaphragm for natural image blur and a dramatic depth of field. Despite the timeless design, the 50mm f/1.8G is created with modern AF-S design benefits to give photographers rapid response, quiet operation and excellent sharpness and clarity throughout the frame.
Price and Availability
The Nikon Df will be available in late November 2013, invoking classic Nikon silver and black color schemes. The suggested retail price (SRP) of the Df (body only) will be $2,749.95*, while the Df and 50mm f/1.8 Special Edition lens kit will have a SRP of $2,999.95*. Stratasys Introduces Digital ABS High-Rigidity Material for its Polyjet 3D Printers
More stable material is ideal for small appliance, electronics and injection mold applications.
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. and REHOVOT, Israel, Nov. 5, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --
Stratasys Ltd( http://www.stratasys.com ). (Nasdaq: SSYS), a manufacturer of 3D printers and materials for personal use, prototyping, and production, today debuted the second generation of its Digital ABS material, named Digital ABS2. The new material, designed for Stratasys PolyJet 3D Printers, is designed to enable users to produce thin-walled models with high dimensional stability. It is now available in ivory in addition to the existing green color.
Enhanced software increases the material's rigidity, durability and functionality of thin wall elements. This is aimed at improving form, fit, and assembly for prototyping or production applications.
In addition, the material's rigidity makes it ideal for 3D printing cores and cavities for use in low-volume injection molding applications using thermoplastics. Benefits include sharper edges, which hold up better, and the improved ability to 3D print small parts such as pins and other thin features that are strong enough to handle the high stresses of the injection molding process.
"In addition to general purpose applications, Digital ABS2 is ideal for prototyping consumer electronics and other consumer goods, including small appliances and cell phones, which require high stability with thin-wall geometries," says Fred Fischer, director of materials and applications product management at Stratasys.
Stratasys PolyJet digital materials are composite materials created by simultaneously jetting two distinct PolyJet materials. The two are combined in specific concentrations and structures to provide unique mechanical properties and to provide a closer look, feel and function to the end-product. Stratasys Digital ABS materials combine high-temperature resistance with enhanced strength and stability to produce models that can sustain high impact.
Digital ABS2 is available for Objet Connex systems. More information is available on the Stratasys website at Digital ABS( http://www.stratasys.com/materials/polyjet/digital-abs ). For further information on Stratasys 3D Printers and materials, call:

American Airlines Customers Will Have Gate-to-Gate Use Of Handheld Portable Electronic Devices Beginning This Afternoon
American Obtains FAA Approval to Allow Extended Use of Handheld Portable Electronic Devices
FORT WORTH, Texas, Nov. 4, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- American Airlines customers can read their e-books, finish reviewing work documents, listen to music or watch videos on handheld portable electronic devices (PEDs) gate to gate beginning at 5 p.m. CST today. American has obtained approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to allow customers to expand their use of PEDs onboard American's entire mainline fleet as well as regional aircraft operated by American Eagle Airlines. American has worked closely with the FAA on this initiative.
"We're delighted that our customers are now able to use their handheld portable electronic devices gate to gate," said Jon Snook, American's Senior Vice President - Customer Service. "We know that our customers have wanted additional access to their personal devices on their flights, and we've been working with the FAA for some time to make this a reality. We're excited to be able to deliver this to our customers because of the FAA's expeditious approval."
Beginning this afternoon, customers on American's mainline flights and flights operated by American Eagle Airlines will be able to use PEDs from gate to gate - including during taxi, takeoff and landing - within the United States. American is working closely with its other regional partners to bring the same level of electronic device access to customers on all regional flights by the end of the year.
Here's some additional helpful information about PED use on American and American Eagle Airlines:
-- When the aircraft doors are closed for departure, devices will need to
be in airplane mode.
-- Wi-Fi access on equipped aircraft will be available shortly after
takeoff.
-- Customers need to secure their handheld devices by holding them or
placing them in a seatback pocket. Previously, these devices needed to
be stowed under a seat or in an overhead bin during taxi, takeoff and
landing.
-- Because the safety of our customers and people is always our top
priority, customers should listen to all safety briefings and comply
with crewmember instructions. Our crewmembers don't like to interrupt
our customers' productivity, but always want them to be safe.
-- This change doesn't apply to larger items such as laptops. These items
will still need to be stowed during taxi, takeoff and landing.
-- Some American Eagle flights won't allow the expanded use of PEDs until
later this year.
The expanded use of PEDs is one of a number of American's recent inflight enhancements. American has 99 percent of its domestic mainline fleet equipped with Wi-Fi, including its entire fleet of Boeing 737s, 767-200s, MD-80s and Airbus A319s. American's Boeing 777-300ER is the first aircraft in American's fleet to offer international Wi-Fi, enabling customers to remain connected throughout the flight, whether over land or over water.
In addition to Wi-Fi, American's Airbus A319s, Boeing 777-300ERs and new Boeing 737s offer customers modern technology onboard, including in-seat entertainment throughout the aircraft. Customers are able to stay connected throughout their travels with universal power outlets and USB ports at every seat.

LG Electronics Launches Android Developers' Device Loaner Program, Beginning With LG G2
New LG Program Gives Android Developers What They Want: New SDKs, the Latest and Greatest Devices for Loan, and Easy Access to LG Tools and Support
SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 4, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- LG Electronics, the maker of LG G2 and Nexus 5 smartphones, is expanding its LG Android Developers' Program with a new device loaner program that officially launches today.
The loaner program was previewed at last week's LG Android Developers' VIP event in San Francisco, where a new software development kit (SDK), the LG QRemote SDK, was officially introduced.
The hundreds of developers who attended the LG Android Developers' Workshop had the opportunity to experience the award-winning new LG G2 superphone, check out the LG QRemote SDK and learn more about the overall LG Android Developers' Program.
"When multiple developers followed up after the event, thanking LG for 'doing it right,' we know we're giving them what they want," said Cecilia Son, LG's head of mobile developer relations in North America. "By providing the Android developer community with a new SDK and the latest LG devices to test their apps on, we're living up to our brand promise, 'with LG, it's all possible.' We're giving them the tools to help inspire some great new apps -- ones we expect to see on the LG App Store very soon."
The new LG Device Loaner Program for Android developers consists of a simple three-step process: registration on the LG Device Loaner Program website (http://goo.gl/Xa7A3L), completion of a brief order form designating the desired LG device, and return shipping at the conclusion of the 30-day loan period. The LG device loaner program is provided free of charge to the developer community, with the exception of return shipping costs that are covered by the developer.
Supporting the hot new flagship LG G2 superphone and other LG Android devices, the new LG QRemote SDK (http://developer.lge.com) contains the library, documentation and sample codes that enable developers to create their QuickRemote apps to control multiple electronic devices such as TVs, cable set-top-boxes and audio systems, and even air conditioners. This SDK provides developers with open apps necessary to develop IR (infrared) remote sensor-enabled applications.

Project Shotblock Seeks Crowdfunding for New Webcam Blocker
CLEMENTON, New Jersey, November 4, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --
The Shotblock, patent pending, is a new and convenient device fitted over a
webcam and used to protect one's privacy from hackers or other prying eyes.
Project Shotblock is urgently seeking crowdfunding
[http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/438065082/project-shotblock ] to raise $2000 by
Thursday October 31, 2013, 2:05 pm EDT for its new device, designed to cover a laptop or
tablet user's webcam and prevent hackers from spying on the lives of their victims. The
money will be used to finish the first batch of units and pay for costs attributed to
securing the utility patent.
"A Webcam is a window into your personal life that anyone can access," said Charles
Meyer, one of the project's leaders, "You may not use your webcam that often, but a
computer hacker can use it against you." Webcam hacking is on the rise, and most recently
made the news in the form of when Cassidy Wolf revealed that she became a victim of webcam
hacking and extortion just months before being crowned Miss Teen USA 2013.
This invasion is not new. It's been around for years. Most victims are unaware that
someone is watching them, and that it can happen so easily. Secret links are embedded in
information that can be accessed by browsing the Internet, and hackers simply trick the
individual into running a file. Email attachments are another way of targeting victims.
The anguish, fear and frustration from such an intrusion can be overwhelming, and most of
the time, the victim has no idea that the invasion has even occurred.
What makes the Shotblock [http://projectshotblock.com ] different from other solutions
is that it is reusable and removable, fitting easily over most laptops and tablets without
risk of sticky residue build-up or scratching. It will help users take control of their
privacy. When the webcam is not in use, simply slide the Shotblock over the camera. It's
that simple. Companies will have the added benefit of customizing the device by adding a
company name and/or logo. They will be available in several finishes and make handy items
to have at trade shows and giveaways.
Project Shotblock [http://projectshotblock.com ] is designed for all laptop users,
although women and children tend to be the most targeted by hackers. As an incentive to
contribute to Project Shotblock, pledge levels have been created, giving backers an
opportunity to be one of the first to receive this much-needed, timely product. The device
is set to be manufactured by a family-owned shop in New Jersey when the $2000 level is
reached.
About Project Shotblock
Project Shotblock is headed by student Charles Meyer who is currently working towards
his Bachelor of Science degree in Information Systems at the University of Delaware. He is
enrolled in the HORN Entrepreneurial program that teaches him how to successfully
implement a startup company. Business partner David Lehman, a third year law student at
Rutgers-Newark, is studying Business, with a focus on Fourth amendment issues. Together,
they seek monetary support to help fund the completion of this simple, easy-to-use device
that will prevent "snoopers" from wreaking havoc in a laptop user's life. To pledge, visit http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/438065082/project-shotblock. A video on the Project

Remote Shutter takes the 'selfie' to a whole new level!
HAUPPAUGE, N.Y., Nov. 4, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Everyone takes 'selfies' but now you can take 'epic' 'selfies' as Audiovox Electronics Corporation (AEC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of VOXX International Corp. (NASDAQ: VOXX), announces the launch of ShutterBall, a remote shutter for smartphone cameras.
Selfies are more popular than ever; "on Instagram, there are more than 36 million photos tagged #selfie, 98 million tagged #me and countless others without the identifying hashtags," according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Taking a great 'selfie' is not always as easy as it looks. Smartphone camera buttons are not always in the most ideal spot and often taking a good 'selfie' turns you into a contortionist. Not anymore!
ShutterBall is a Bluetooth powered remote shutter control that pairs with your smartphone via an app and allows you to take perfect 'selfies', group shots and videos without having to endure the contortions sometimes necessary to trigger the shutter on your smartphone. Never take an awkward 'selfie' or be left out of a group photo again!
"Today's electronics focus on convenience," said Tom Malone, president of Audiovox Electronics Corp. "and ShutterBall does just that...letting the consumer take the convenience of the camera feature on a smartphone to the next level. With ShutterBall you will take clean, crisp, blurry free photos. In addition, because you trigger the shutter remotely, you can include yourself in the bigger groupie shots. ShutterBall is easy to use and at $24.99, will make a great stocking stuffer this holiday season."
Compatible with both iPhone and Samsung smartphone models, ShutterBall triggers your smartphone for still shots and video. It also provides better control for blur-free group shots at a distance of up to 60 feet. The device is coin cell battery operated and provides up to 5-year battery life with Bluetooth Low Energy. ShutterBall even includes a bonus stand/easel to prop up your smartphone.
ShutterBall is currently available in green, pink, blue and black at Toys "R" Us, Amazon.com and HSN.com for an MSRP of $24.99. It can also be purchased online at store.audiovox.com. There will be more retailer announcements in the coming weeks!

IBM Expands Big Data Portfolio with New Predictive Intelligence Software
Extends Leadership with Software Designed to Speed Analytics Deployments
LAS VEGAS, Nov. 4, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, at Information on Demand Forum (#IBMIOD), IBM (NYSE: IBM) announced a variety of new offerings that leverage cognitive computing and predictive analytics technologies to help companies more easily predict and respond to opportunities and challenges hidden in data. IBM is also helping clients to harness massive amounts of data with new high speed analytics software by expanding IBM's BLU Acceleration portfolio.
New software will enable clients to apply foundational elements of cognitive intelligence throughout their information technology (IT) infrastructure. This will enable employees to gain insights from Big Data instead of focusing on how to cope with its sheer volume. Such insights can help predict and prevent IT downtime, improve productivity and generate cost savings.
Today, organizations are increasingly faced with managing a complex IT system of servers, networks and applications. Combined with the proliferation of mobile and cloud computing environments, these systems can generate more than 1.3 terabytes of data per day, including log files, software error alerts, IT service tickets and network configuration updates. This can result in more than one million "events" or system alerts per day, some of which are critical to performance and others that are irrelevant, which can bog down systems administrators.
These are IBM's latest Big Data technologies to help organizations transition to a new era in computing where systems can learn, reason, sense, predict and enhance decision making. Cognitive systems, such as IBM's Watson, can "understand" the context within users' questions, uncover answers from Big Data, and improve performance by continuously learning from experiences.
"As the value of data continues to grow, the differentiator for clients will be around predicting what could happen to help transform their business with speed and conviction," said Steve Mills, senior vice president and group executive, software and systems at IBM. "IBM's latest set of solutions allow clients to help predict customer behavior and outcomes with speed and ease, all delivered from the cloud."
Cognitive Computing and Predictive Analytics Soar into the Cloud
Organizations typically discard or archive IT operations data, preventing them from tapping a valuable business resource. Now with IBM SmartCloud Analytics - Predictive Insights, they can sift through terabytes of IT operations data in real time, spotting only the trends that are critical to IT network performance. The software's cognitive computing capabilities learn, reason and sense an organization's IT systems. As business and performance conditions change, the software adapts, updating settings and eliminating inadvertent but costly errors caused by poor system configuration. This new technology will run on the SoftLayer infrastructure, which will be the foundation of IBM's cloud portfolio.
Working with IBM, Consolidated Communications, a leading telecommunications company, expects to save $300,000 annually in reactive costs alone by analyzing IT operations data. The company sets and monitors more than 80,000 performance standards, such as connectivity speed and television frequency levels for each of its 500,000 clients. The cognitive intelligence in the IBM software learns and predicts normal usage and performance standards, automatically setting and monitoring the metrics that are the most important for each client. The intelligent software also helps the company recognize minute yet critical abnormalities amid massive volumes of data, spotting potential network problems before they occur.
"By working with IBM to apply cognitive technologies to our IT operations data, we are able to learn what defines good service for each customer's connection and then determine instantly when critical deviations happen, no matter how small," said Chris Smith, director of network tools and automations, Consolidated Communications. "With the IBM software, we are able to tailor our services to individual clients, improve overall network efficiency and spot and stop issues before they happen."
IBM is also applying machine learning and analytics to storage with a new version of SmartCloud Virtual Storage Center. Now, organizations can save time and money by automating complex storage tiering decisions and moving to cloud storage. By analyzing data usage patterns, this intelligent software identifies the type of storage best suited for an organization's data, and automatically makes the change without interruption to the user or applications. The software learns key usage patterns over time, adapting and shifting data as business needs change. IBM deployed this automated storage tiering capability at its own Boulder, Colorado data center and reduced per terabyte of storage costs by nearly 50 percent.
IBM SmartCloud Analytics--Predictive Insights is one of the 100-plus IBM software-as-a-service (SaaS) offerings that infuse analytics into line of business and IT operations that will be supported by SoftLayer infrastructure in the near future. SoftLayer is fast becoming the foundation of IBM's cloud portfolio, adding more than 1,000 new clients since IBM acquired the company in July, 2013.
IBM Expands Big Data Portfolio
IBM is also announcing an expansion of its BLU Acceleration portfolio to help clients harness Big Data and analytics. IBM is introducing an early access preview of BLU Acceleration for Cloud (bluforcloud.com), a solution that will offer IBM's advanced technologies powered by BLU Acceleration in-memory database and business analytics technologies, for powerful, agile warehousing delivered with cloud simplicity. This offering provides fast and simple self-service insight for business analysts and technical professionals. This news comes on the heels of the recently announced IBM BLU Acceleration Solution - Power Systems Edition which exploits POWER7+ processor-based technology for 8x to 25x faster reporting and analytics and 10x storage space savings. IBM is also delivering BLU Acceleration capabilities as part of its IBM PureSystems family of expert integrated systems. The new IBM Business Intelligence Pattern with BLU Acceleration (BI-BLU) works with IBM PureApplication System to make it simple and fast for organizations to benefit from high speed analytics using advanced in-memory technologies.
Additional new technologies announced as part of the IBM Big Data portfolio include:
-- New Big Data exploration capabilities for InfoSphere Data Explorer, a
search-based Big Data exploration tool that helps clients distinguish
different forms of data through data exploration and discovery, and
helps clients visualize structured and unstructured data from multiple
diverse sources.
-- The first commercial search offering designed to keep pace with today's
Big Data and cloud-based systems, while still delivering information
from traditional enterprise systems such as relational databases,
enterprise content management and customer relationship management
solutions. InfoSphere Data Explorer brings Big Data out of the lab and
onto the desktops of front-line employees, allowing organizations to
enhance the customer experience.
-- InfoSphere Data Privacy for Hadoop allows clients to anonymize data in
Hadoop, NoSQL and relational systems. With data activity monitoring
capabilities, the technology can also help organizations prevent
unauthorized access of confidential information stored in Hadoop
systems.
-- IBM PureData System for Hadoop simplifies deployment of Hadoop systems
by allowing users to get up and running in hours, rather than days or
weeks. Enhancements include built-in archiving tools, simplified
administration and higher levels of security than open-source systems.
In an audited benchmark conducted by STAC, the Securities Technology
Analysis Center, InfoSphere BigInsights for Hadoop has been found to
deliver an approximate 4X performance advantage on average over open
source Hadoop. This is a critical milestone for clients in a variety of
industries who are looking to visualize, access and analyze Big Data to
stay competitive.
-- The release of an Information Governance Dashboard, which displays
confidence levels in data sources in a business-friendly interface.
Decision-makers can see confidence levels in their data visualized in a
user-friendly way, such as governance policies and data lineage, which
fosters trust and greater usage of data and insights.
-- A new, smaller configuration for IBM PureData System for Transactions
for continuously available transactional databases. The new model offers
the same leading performance and appliance simplicity for a fully
active, highly available and scalable database platform for the Big Data
era.
About IBM Big Data & Analytics
Each day we create 2.5 quintillion bytes of data generated by a variety of sources -- from climate information, to posts on social media sites, and from purchase transaction records to healthcare medical images. At IBM we believe that data is emerging as the world's newest resource for competitive advantage, and analytics is the key to make sense of it. IBM is helping clients harness Big Data & Analytics to provide insights needed to make better decisions, create value, and deliver that value to customers and society.
