A geographical region of interest (aka "geofence") is being used by many new and innovative location-aware applications. The geofence feature enables the application to receive a notification when a user enters or exits a virtual perimeter. However, the implementation of this feature in traditional architectures is not viable as the applications processor needs to run constantly, causing rapid drain to the device's battery. Ultra low power (ULP) RF specialist Nordic Semiconductor ASA (OSE: NOD) today
announces the immediate availability of a lower cost variant of its award-winning nRF51822
Bluetooth(R) low energy and proprietary 2.4GHz SoC (System-on-Chip) that will offer an
identical feature, peripherals, and performance set but half the Flash memory at 128kB
(instead of 256kB).
The nRF51822 (128kB) also offers pin-to-pin compatibility with the existing nRF51822
(256kB) and so could serve as a drop-in replacement for any existing nRF51822-based
designs that could operate with half the Flash memory, allowing smooth and seamless
migration without any engineering risk or re-qualification requirements with relevant
regulatory bodies such as the FCC and EU.
This means it will offer the same industry-first multiprotocol radio and a 32-bit ARM
Cortex-M0 based processor optimized for ultra low power wireless applications and deliver
-92.5dB RX sensitivity in Bluetooth low energy mode; up to +4dBm output power in all
modes; up to 9.5dBm improvement in link budget compared to previous generations of
class-leading Nordic chips, and sub-10mA peak currents running off a 3V coin cell battery
for months or years of battery life (depending on the application). As with the existing
nRF51822, this new nRF51822 128kB variant will also be 100 percent on air compatible with
Nordic's existing nRF24L series ICs ('integrated circuits' or 'chips').
This new part will complement Nordic's existing nRF51822 (256kB) Flash SoC by
targeting the most price sensitive ULP wireless applications that are typically high
volume consumer products such as entry-level PC mice and keyboards, smartphone
accessories, and toys.

The airline also announced an upgrade to their television package. In 2012, Southwest became the only airline in the world to stream live television directly to Customers' personal devices. Now, in addition to eight channels of live news and sports, Customers can also select on-demand episodes of popular television shows. The upgraded TV package is $5 a day, per device on WiFi-enabled planes.

The majority of Southwest Customers now have access to WiFi, movies on demand, and the upgraded television offering. As of February 6, all Southwest Boeing 737-700 and 737-800 aircraft were equipped with Row 44 satellite technology that enables these entertainment offerings/services. This milestone represents nearly 75 percent of all Southwest aircraft, which completes the retrofit installations. Moving forward, all new deliveries and AirTran conversions will enter service with Row 44 technology installed.
WiFi service can be purchased for $8 a day, per device including stops and connections. Customers do not need to purchase WiFi in order to access movies or TV.
Accessing the Internet, or watching movies and television is simple. Customers use their WiFi-enabled device onboard any Boeing 737-700 or 737-800 aircraft, connect to "southwestwifi," and launch their browser to be directed to the inflight entertainment portal. From the portal, Customers are able to select WiFi, movies, or television. The portal also provides free access to a flight tracker, shopping, and games. With Row 44 satellite technology, connectivity continues to work over bodies of water so Customers remain connected all day, no matter where they travel.
