New Fujitsu V Series FRAMs Deliver Optimal Design Flexibility

SUNNYVALE, Calif., March 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --Fujitsu Semiconductor America (FSA) today extended its growing portfolio of Ferroelectric memory products with the introduction of a new Ferroelectric Random Access Memory (FRAM) product series that features a wide voltage range of 3.0V to 5.5V, offering significant design flexibility for consumer and industrial applications.
The new V series includes products ranging from 16kbit to 256kbit, covering both I2C and SPI interfaces. The first two members of the series, the MB85RC16V and MB85RC64V, are now available in production quantities. The devices feature I2C serial interfaces at an operating frequency of 400kHz, covering the densities of 16kbit and 64kbit, respectively. The V series products deliver high reliability, with 10 years data retention at 85 degrees C as well as an endurance of 1 trillion (10(12)) read/write cycles. The products have a guaranteed operation over the industrial temperature range of -40 degrees C to +85 degrees C.
"The Fujitsu V series FRAMs accommodate the common CMOS voltage range of 3.3V to 5V, while allowing +10% voltage swing tolerance," said Tong Swan Pang, senior manager of marketing at Fujitsu Semiconductor America. Other devices incorporating 256kbit with I2C or SPI interfaces will also become available in 2012. All products of this series are available in the popular 8-pin plastic SOP packages, which are compatible with most EEPROMs.
Wide Variety of FRAMs Available from Fujitsu
Apart from the V series, Fujitsu offers a wide variety of low-voltage FRAM devices operating between 2.7 and 3.0V, which are equipped with I2C, SPI or parallel interfaces. Density levels vary from 16kbit to 4Mbit.
FRAM is the new generation of nonvolatile memory that outperforms memories like EEPROM and Flash, consumes less power, and offers higher speed and virtually unlimited endurance to multiple read-and-write operations. FRAM is non-volatile, but operates in other respects like RAM. New IBM Smarter Buildings Analytics to Help CFOs Prepare for Major Accounting Shift
ARMONK, N.Y., March 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM (NYSE: IBM) today introduced new analytics software to help Chief Financial Officers and real estate executives accelerate preparedness for pending compliance rules for leased assets. More than 92 percent of senior executives surveyed in a new IBM study say they're not yet prepared to address these changes.
Proposed accounting rules from the U.S. Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and International Accounting Standards Board (IASB), expected to be finalized in 2012, will require a company's leased assets - such as real estate, vehicles and other equipment - to be added to their balance sheet as a capital asset.
This means S&P 500 companies, for example, would have to list the value of their leases on the balance sheet, weighing them down with an estimated average of more than $1 billion in new assets. The pending regulation has the potential to dampen their financial performance as expressed in debt/equity ratios and return on assets. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) estimates the impact of these changes may approach $1.25 trillion dollars for U.S. publicly traded companies.(1)
IBM today is issuing new software to help companies manage this major accounting change. IBM TRIRIGA software has new analytics that delivers visibility into balance sheet and income statement impact; financial assumptions and audit controls for both real estate and equipment leases; and automates management review and approval processes, specifically to help companies navigate the proposed regulation.
The new software also delivers strategic facility scenario modeling to increase return on leased real property assets. With a global view, the software can:
-- Provide operational controls such as critical date alerts, payment
processing and financial assumptions for leased real estate and
equipment assets in a single technology platform.
-- Provide balance sheet and income statement analysis of complex real
estate lease decisions, such as 10 years with two renewal options versus
20 years, for instance.
-- Help predict future demand for space and display gaps between demand and
availability of real estate space.
These types of analytics are critical as an IBM study issued today shows 92 percent of those surveyed believe they are not prepared to implement the pending rules. The IBM survey, conducted by CFO Research Services, a research group sponsored by CFO Publishing, polled 179 senior executives from global companies with revenue in excess of US$1 billion.
Survey Highlights Lease Accounting Challenges
The IBM survey indicates the proposed rules will require considerable changes to companies' operating and finance strategies. Seventy-nine percent anticipate moderate or substantial changes to accounting policies, processes and practices, while a majority also expects related operational strategies for real estate (53 percent). Sixty-three percent of companies expect changes in information management systems to comply with the pending rules.
Specifically, the new survey, "Beyond the Balance Sheet: Opening the Book on the New Lease Accounting Standards" also found that:
-- About half exhibit the most concern over worsening in debt/equity ratios
and return on assets.
-- Sixty percent say that they will need to make some level of change in
planning, budgeting and forecasting systems, while half (49 percent)
expect new or upgraded business intelligence systems.
-- Sixty percent anticipate the need for changes or new software to
enterprise asset management systems, while 56 percent expect to address
real estate and facilities management systems.
-- Seventy-four percent agree that their companies will need to conduct
additional training to adapt to the new lease accounting standard.
-- More than half feel they will need significant time to prepare for the
proposed standards with 58 percent predicting six months to two years.
"As companies are hit with the new financial regulations, we see that most firms are concerned about their readiness to abide by the lease accounting changes," said George Ahn, vice president of Enterprise Asset Management, IBM. MIPI® Alliance Low Latency Interface Extends Design Options While Saving Cost and Board Space
BARCELONA, Spain, Feb. 29, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS -- MIPI Alliance today announced the Low Latency Interface (LLI) specification for mobile devices, which offers a point-to-point interconnect between the application processor and modem/baseband processor. Using this high bandwidth interconnect enables the baseband processor to access the application processor's dedicated DRAM memory for baseband processor operation, thus eliminating a separate, dedicated DRAM chip. Industry estimates translate the savings to an approximately $2 USD reduction in the total bill of materials for a smartphone. Layered, Transaction-Level Protocol Improves Data Flow
The LLI interface specification targets low-latency cache refill transactions. Targets and initiators on the application processor and the baseband processor exchange transactions without software intervention - thus reducing latency. The specification also defines a best-effort traffic class, allowing access to remote memory-mapped peripherals without decreasing latency-critical traffic performance. Finally, the LLI interface allows for sideband signal transmission between the two chips, improving overall system communication.
The interface layers begin with an industry-standard physical layer. LLI leverages the MIPI Alliance M-PHY(SM)( )physical layer, a high bandwidth, widely-adopted approach used for peripheral inter-chip interconnects in many mobile and consumer applications. Upper LLI stack layers include a PHY adapter, data link layer and transaction layer.
Scalable Solution Extends Product Life, Reduces Design Time
By using a common physical layer, the LLI specification offers a scalable solution accommodating existing and future requirements in mobile devices. Design configurations can leverage multiple transmission modes, enabling mobile device OEMs to customize their products based on customer needs. LLI also helps reduce overall system power by leveraging the M-PHY SLEEP and HIBERNATE power modes.
SoC designers can connect multiple chips in a "daisy chained" configuration, allowing the chips to share a single memory chip. This enables designers to pursue a multi-chip platform approach, where feature sets can be modified by changing companion chips. This design flexibility extends the product life of application and baseband processors and reduces design time for device manufacturers.
Standardized Interface Reduces Pins and Eases Testing
Previous inter-chip interface solutions were proprietary. A widely adopted solution known as Chip2Chip proved the value of a low latency interface. The LLI interface goes a step farther, delivering equivalent latency and throughput with a substantial reduction in pin count and scalability. As the M-PHY offers scales of High Speed Gears, the application can utilize less pins with higher gear implementation to achieve high throughput and low latency.
With discrete application and baseband processors being used in most mobile devices, a standard chip interconnect dramatically eases system-level testing for OEMs. Faster testing and less time working with proprietary solutions shortens design cycles and gets products to market faster.
Specification Benefits from Broad Industry Support
The LLI Working Group was chartered in 2010, after a 2009 Investigation Group proved an industry need for a standardized, low-latency inter-chip interface specification.
