GSMA Announces New Initiatives Focusing on Creating More Efficient Mobile Applications
GSMA Provides Guidelines for Creating More Efficient Mobile Applications and Launches "Smarter Apps Challenge"
BARCELONA, Spain, Feb. 27, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobile World Congress -- The GSMA today announced the first in a series of activities designed to help users and operators manage the growing traffic and signalling demands generated by smartphones and mobile applications. The GSMA has created a developer's guide which will help application developers ensure their applications are more user- and network-friendly. Along with this guide, the GSMA is launching the "Smarter Apps Challenge" competition to drive the development of efficient mobile applications.
"The widespread adoption of smartphones and the explosion in mobile applications have forever changed the way that users communicate, access and share information," said Anne Bouverot, Director General, GSMA. "At the same time, this dynamic presents new challenges for mobile operators as they manage increasing traffic volumes on their networks, and more importantly, dramatically increased signalling loads. The new programmes announced today will help boost the efficiency of applications and networks and offer a better experience for users."
Smarter Apps for Smarter Phones
Consumer demand for innovative smartphone applications has grown dramatically over the past few years; there are now more than 1 million apps available worldwide and more than 19,000 new applications are being added each week, according to mobile analytics firm Distimo. This high demand for and heavy use of mobile applications has resulted in a greatly increased signalling load at the network level, compared with a relatively low amount of data traffic. A driver behind this increased signalling load is the proliferation of "network-unfriendly" applications that are not optimised for mobile networks; mobile networks have their own specific requirements and constraints, and applications written for fixed networks may not necessarily perform well in the mobile world.
The GSMA has established a taskforce of 22 operators who will be working with all areas of the mobile application ecosystem, including application developers, OS vendors, app store owners, handset makers and network equipment providers. Backed by mobile operators including Bharti Airtel, KT Corporation, NTT DOCOMO, Orange, Rogers Communications, Telecom Italia, TeliaSonera, Verizon Wireless, VimpelCom and Vodafone, the GSMA today released a set of recommendations for application developers that will enable improvements across a number of areas including application connectivity, power consumption, network reliability and security. By following the guidelines, developers will be better equipped to create fit-for-purpose apps; mobile operators will see a reduced strain on their networks; and users will experience more responsive and reliable apps and improved battery life. For a copy of these guidelines, please visit http://www.gsma.com/smarterapp.
"As the initial proponent of the GSMA's work on Application Efficiency, KT believes that GSMA plays a critical role in leading this global initiative," said Dr. Hyun-Myung Pyo, President of the Mobile Business Group of KT and Board Member of the GSMA. "With the explosive growth of smartphone users, smarter management of network resources is becoming very critical to provide the best user experience for all. It should be the collective efforts of all ecosystem players, and KT is fully committed in leading the initiative to achieve more efficient use of network resources."
"Orange supports this new GSMA initiative around application efficiency, and we believe that by working together, we will act in the best interests of our customers," said Jean-Paul Cottet, Senior Executive Vice President, Group Marketing and Innovation, Orange.
GSMA Launches Developer Competition
To incentivise developers to implement these recommendations and create more efficient mobile applications, GSMA today launched the "Smarter Apps Challenge" developer competition. This challenge calls on all developers to submit their commercially available mobile apps, on any platform, that meet the growing market need for greater efficiency as defined in the GSMA guidelines. Judges will identify the top three most efficient mobile applications and winners will be announced at the GSMA Mobile Asia Expo taking place in Shanghai, 20-22 June 2012. Winners will receive cash and other awards, including a trip to the Mobile Asia Expo. For full criteria, eligibility and other information, please visit http://www.mobileappchallenge.com/smarterapp.

Qualcomm Third Generation LTE Chipsets Are First to Support HSPA+ Release 10, LTE Advanced with LTE Carrier Aggregation
BARCELONA, Spain, Feb. 27, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) today announced that its next generation Gobi((TM)) modem chipsets, the MDM8225((TM)), MDM9225((TM)) and MDM9625((TM)) chipsets, will begin sampling in Q4 2012 and will be the first to support both HSPA+ Release 10 and the next-generation of the LTE mobile broadband standard, LTE Advanced. The MDM9225 and MDM9625 chipsets are also the first to support LTE carrier aggregation and true LTE Category 4 with data rates of up to 150 Mbps and give network operators increased broadband speeds across their LTE service areas. Implemented in a 28nm manufacturing process, the chipsets will feature significant improvements in performance and power consumption from previous generations and provide support for multiple mobile broadband technologies to deliver a best-in-class mobile broadband experience for smartphones, tablets, ultra-portable notebooks, portable hotspots, dongles and CPEs (Customer Premises Equipment).
LTE carrier aggregation is an important technology that combines multiple radio channels within and across bands to increase user data rates, reduce latency and enable Category 4 capabilities for operators without 20 MHz of continuous spectrum. The MDM9225 and MDM9625 chipsets are the only mobile broadband chipsets currently supporting carrier aggregation that allow OEMs to build devices that can take full advantage of LTE Advanced networks.
The MDM9225 and MDM9625 chipsets are Qualcomm's third generation of LTE modem chipsets. In addition to supporting both LTE Advanced (LTE Release 10) and HSPA+ Release 10 (including 84 Mbps dual carrier HSDPA), they are backward compatible with other standards including EV-DO Advanced, TD-SCDMA and GSM. The chipsets contain the industry's only modems to integrate 7 different radio access modes on a single baseband chip: cdma2000 (1X, DO), GSM/EDGE, UMTS (WCDMA, TD-SCDMA) and LTE (both LTE-FDD and LTE-TDD). This will allow OEMS to design mobile devices that can operate on the increasingly diverse set of radio network deployments and configurations used worldwide.
"Our newest generation of Gobi modem chipsets will allow mobile device OEMs to design products that can operate on nearly any mobile broadband network worldwide," said Cristiano Amon, senior vice president of product management, Qualcomm. "In addition to supporting the latest mobile broadband technologies, these chipsets improve over Qualcomm's previous 7-mode 28nm LTE chipsets (MDM9x15) by offering a reduction in power consumption and overall board area, enabling OEMs to design smaller, sleeker devices with longer battery life."
The third-generation Gobi modem chipsets also have an integrated application processor and hardware accelerators with a feature rich, Linux-based application development environment and optional mobile access point software stack. Customers can differentiate their MDM8225/9x25 chipset based devices by using the application development environment to create value-added applications. When paired with the Qualcomm Atheros AR6003 or AR6004 chipsets, the mobile access point software stack enables customers to design high performance, low power portable and fixed 802.11n routers. These routers would deliver up to 150 Mbps data connections to Wi-Fi-capable devices.
The MDM8225 chipset supports UMTS only devices, the MDM9225 chipset supports LTE and UMTS devices and the MDM9625 chipset supports LTE, UMTS and CDMA2000 devices. All three chipsets are expected to begin sampling in Q4 2012.

Mobile Operators Show Increased Momentum In Rich Communications
BARCELONA, Spain, Feb. 27, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobile World Congress -- The GSMA today announced significant advancements in Rich Communications, including updates on launches by mobile network operators, device availability, a new global specification and the creation of a new consumer facing-brand, joyn(TM). Rich Communications will enable mobile network operators (MNOs) to provide consumers with familiar services such as enhanced messaging and voice, as well as new services like video calling and the ability to share documents and photos simultaneously during calls, all from the phone's contact book, regardless of the network or device used.
"There is clear consumer demand for enriched messaging and voice services, and Rich Communications provides mobile network operators with solutions to address these consumer needs, as well as paving the way for future, innovative IP-based voice and messaging services," said Anne Bouverot, Director General, GSMA. "These services will be delivered to consumers in a seamless way and with the level of innovation, quality of service and attention to privacy that they have come to expect from their mobile operator."
Launch of Commercial Services
Rich Communication Services (RCS), which provide MNOs with a means of transitioning voice and messaging services into an all-IP and LTE world, has gathered significant pace in America, Asia and Europe. Carriers from the around the globe supporting the RCS standard include AT&T, Bell Mobility, Bharti Airtel, Deutsche Telekom, KPN, KT, LGU+, Orange, Orascom Telecom, Rogers Communications, SFR, SK Telecom, Telecom Italia, Telefonica, TeliaSonera, Telus, Verizon and Vodafone.
"We at Deutsche Telekom are very pleased and committed to support Rich Communications. As it is the natural evolution of our core communication services, voice and messaging, this new standard has already been embraced by the leading carriers and manufacturers in our industry," said Rene Obermann, CEO Deutsche Telekom. "Since Rich Communications will be fully integrated in devices, there is no need for our customers to download or install anything. Ease of use is thus ensured and it will just work. We are looking forward to offer new services like text chat, file and live video sharing during a call to our customers soon."
Earlier this year, the three major Spanish MNOs, Orange, Telefonica and Vodafone, published an update on their interoperability trials which form an important part of the preparations for a launch of commercial services, anticipated by the summer of 2012. In addition to the progress in Spain, operators in France, Germany, Italy and Korea have committed to commercial launches in 2012.
"Orange sees tremendous potential for RCS to deliver a truly compelling customer experience through easy-to-use, integrated communication solutions and we are delighted to be part of the increased momentum in the industry to deliver them. To this end, we are committed to accelerating the roll-out of RCS, beginning with Spain in Q2 2012 and France in H2 2012," said Jean-Paul Cottet, Executive Vice President, Marketing, Innovationand New Growth Activities, Orange.
Top Device Makers Support Rich Communications
Device availability is key to the acceleration of the adoption of Rich Communications and top handset makers including HTC, Huawei, LG, Nokia, Research In Motion, Samsung, Sony, and ZTE have announced support of Rich Communications in their handsets, many of which will be on display at Mobile World Congress. Infrastructure vendors including Acme Packet, Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Huawei, Mavenir and Nokia Siemens Networks also support RCS and will be showcasing their latest Rich Communications solutions at Mobile World Congress. Rich Communications will be available on new devices and as a downloadable app for legacy devices and will be on show on these vendors' stands as well as the GSMA Pavilion in Hall 8, Stand C118.
Introduction of a Global Specification
A new global specification has been developed and will represent the interests of a wide range of operators. RCS 5.0 will ensure that voice, messaging, and all future communication services continue to be available on both existing and all-IP LTE networks. The specification will support services across mobile and fixed networks and includes such features as high quality IP-based voice and video calling; geo-location, where a user can push accurate location information to others on the call; cloud storage for customers to store all messages for secure access from any connected device; and live video in IM chat, in which video share can be introduced during an IM chat session.
"RCS 5.0 will not only provide our customers the services they've come to expect - like voice and texting - but will bring new services like live video calling and the ability to share documents and photos simultaneously during calls, regardless of the network or device used," said Kris Rinne, Senior Vice President of Architecture and Planning, AT&T. "We look forward to further interoperability testing within the carrier community as we move towards commercial readiness"
Introducing joyn - The Consumer Focus
In order to facilitate consumer recognition and understanding of RCS, a consumer-facing brand has been developed. The GSMA today launched the new brand, joyn, which represents ubiquity, security, service quality and interconnection and will be available for operators to use in order to give one global 'face' to RCS services. Through the joyn brand users will know that the device is RCS enabled , which means it automatically 'knows and shows' ways to share with contacts via chat, video, call or files, at any moment in time.
"joyn will act as a mark of assurance to customers that they will have simple and direct access to enriched voice and messaging services wherever they are and whatever network they are using," continued Bouverot. "Our key message is: 'it's just there, it just works.' "
Interoperability will be ensured by an extensive and continuous testing process which has been developed by the GSMA, and supported by leading MNOs, infrastructure manufacturers, device manufacturers and application developers. Devices, networks and services will have to complete the interoperability testing and pass a certification process in order to use the joyn brand; this process that further underpins the assurance of the quality, security and ubiquity of the services customers will use.
Visitors to Mobile World Congress in Barcelona will be the first to experience joyn for themselves. Downloadable joyn apps for Android 2.3 devices will be available as part of extensive trials live at MWC. Users who are customers on Vodafone's Spanish network will be able to download an app from the Android Market free of charge. Those registered with Telefonica will be able to do so shortly afterwards. Feedback from users will help operators fine-tune services for commercial launches, anticipated by the summer from all three major Spanish operators. iOS apps and native devices with joyn built in will follow in the coming months.
Notes to the Editor:

MIPI® Alliance Enables Smart, Safe, Performance-Enhanced Batteries for Mobile Devices
New Battery Interface Specification is the First to Address Key Consumer and Manufacturers' Issues
BARCELONA, Spain, Feb. 27, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- MIPI Alliance today announced a battery interface for mobile devices which improves consumer safety, battery performance, lessens the battery's environmental impact. The robust, scalable and cost efficient single-wire communication interface is the first standard to address these key issues. Mobile device users can now look for smart batteries with longer lifetime, safe, environmentally-friendly battery chemistry as well as increased safety through temperature monitoring and decreased risk of counterfeit products. Plus, members of the mobile device ecosystem - OEMs, chipset suppliers, battery slave IC suppliers and battery pack manufacturers - will benefit from a commonly accepted battery interface that saves design and manufacturing complexity, reduces chipset space and improves cost margins. For more information, go to http://www.mipi.org/BIF. To see a working demonstration of the specification, visit the MIPI Alliance booth in Hall 7, 7H11 at Mobile World Congress.
According to industry analysts, the mobile device battery industry has expanded to at least 1.5 billion batteries produced per year. However, these batteries use many different, non-standard proprietary battery interfaces. This disparity has placed a significant burden on all members of the ecosystem. As advanced wireless networks including LTE and HSPA+ gain deployment, and smart phone functions require ever increasing processing power, the mobile device battery will become the weakest link in the mobile device. The MIPI battery interface specification will address many of these issues.
"The mobile device battery is a critical component, with significant impact to both the consumer and the mobile device ecosystem," said Joel Huloux, Chairman of the Board of MIPI Alliance. "This industry-leading Battery Interface specification reflects the technical excellence and breadth of our membership. We are excited to see this specification deploy and positively impact the market."
"Consumer safety and end-user experience are the main targets of our products," said Stephan Schaecher, Infineon Technologies' Marketing Director for the ORIGA(TM) Product Family, the market leading battery and accessory authentication solution. "The new MIPI BIF standard will accelerate the wide-spread adoption of smarter, safer and more efficient batteries for mobile devices."
"Lattice Semiconductor is a strong supporter of MIPI standards and is excited to announce our solution for the BIF specification today," said Kapil Shankar, Corporate Vice President and General Manager, Mobility Business Group at Lattice Semiconductors. "We believe that driving industry standards is the best way to accelerate development and reduce costs. Lattice's support of BIF expands the areas where our mobile FPGA solutions can provide swift flexibility to designers along with delivering affordable innovation."
"Consumer expectations towards battery performance and safety remain high, calling for new approaches to make the most out of existing and future battery technologies," said Petri Haavisto, Director, Device Architecture at Nokia. "This necessitates advanced feature set from the battery system and respective interface - no such standard exists in the market today. In order to ensure scale, affordability and complete feature set Nokia supports battery interface definition work being run by the MIPI Alliance."
Stewart Bell, Director of Panasonic System LSI Europe, commented, "As a strong supporter of open standards, Panasonic System LSI Europe was proud to be an active contributor to the MIPI Battery Interface Specification. While still supporting low cost batteries, we believe that the BIF specification will enable a new generation of smart batteries providing enhanced safety and performance to mobile terminals."
"BIF is an important advance in battery management for mobile devices and ST-Ericsson is pleased to have contributed to the development of the announced specification," said Alexandre Balmefrezol, Head of Analog System Design at ST-Ericsson. "We plan to implement this new technology in our next generation of energy and power management solutions to enable a better user experience and longer battery life."
Consumers Benefit from Battery Interface Technology
The MIPI Battery Interface specification addresses several key issues, including battery life, environmental concerns, high capacity chemistries and consumer safety. Popular smart phones are known to have shorter battery life as they churn through large amounts of data and always-on applications. MIPI's specification includes unified access to parameters, state monitoring and optimized charging events which improve functionality within the battery, thereby lengthening its life. These capabilities also enable battery pack manufacturers to quickly implement and adopt environmentally-friendly and efficient chemistries for a "greener" battery.
This smart battery technology also enhances consumer safety by supporting advanced authentication and temperature measurement functions. Battery authentication detects potentially dangerous counterfeit products which can harm users. Thanks to this, the mobile device can take the appropriate measures to ensure user safety, including safe, slow-rate charging. Temperature monitoring is vital to insure the battery does not overheat, damaging the device or the person.
Battery Ecosystem Faces Several Challenges
Numerous, proprietary battery interfaces create a technology chain of events with far-ranging impact. Mobile device manufacturers usually specify a unique interface for their phone models - and must support and maintain these solutions for each ecosystem member down the line. Consequently, mobile chipset suppliers must support these varied OEM interfaces. Each unique interface requires design support and more chipset silicon - forcing customers to absorb the costs for all interfaces.
Battery slave IC and battery pack IC suppliers face the same scenario - market demands to support every possible interface and resulting in their own proprietary ICs. Finally, battery pack manufacturers must support numerous physically- and electrically-unique battery models for each mobile device manufacturer. This burden lessens the impetus to implement new environmentally-friendly or high capacity chemistries - which would require interface technology changes backwards through the ecosystem.
Having multiple proprietary and competing battery interface solutions in the market lowers volumes for each product and consequently produces higher costs. This is true especially for smart batteries and likely has impacted their lagging adoption rate in the mobile device market despite the clear benefits of smart battery technology.
The Need for Standardization
The MIPI Battery Interface specification has been developed to meet these challenges. Offering a unique, unified solution, the specification is designed to replace all existing proprietary mobile device battery interface solutions and supports both smart and low-cost batteries.
By focusing on a standard interface solution, mobile chipset suppliers can reduce design time and silicon area, passing on these savings to their customers. Battery slave IC and battery pack IC providers can realize the same benefits, eliminating the need for customized products. Battery pack manufactures can quickly implement the latest chemistry advancements without jeopardizing backwards compatibility or requiring single-customer products. And mobile device manufacturers can streamline their product designs while maintaining existing vendor relationships.
The Battery Interface specification is a joint effort among mobile handset suppliers, chipset and battery slave device providers. These members of the Battery Interface Working Group began their efforts in early 2010. Contributors to the specification include: Analog Devices, Infineon Technologies, Intel Corporation, Lattice Semiconductor Corporation, Nokia Corporation, Panasonic Corporation, Qualcomm Incorporated, Research In Motion, Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications, STMicroelectronics, ST-Ericsson, Texas Instruments Incorporated and Toshiba Corporation.

GSMA Announces New Initiatives Focusing on Creating More Efficient Mobile Applications
GSMA Provides Guidelines for Creating More Efficient Mobile Applications and Launches "Smarter Apps Challenge"
BARCELONA, Spain, Feb. 27, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobile World Congress: The GSMA today announced the first in a series of activities designed to help users and operators manage the growing traffic and signalling demands generated by smartphones and mobile applications. The GSMA has created a developer's guide which will help application developers ensure their applications are more user- and network-friendly. Along with this guide, the GSMA is launching the "Smarter Apps Challenge" competition to drive the development of efficient mobile applications.
"The widespread adoption of smartphones and the explosion in mobile applications has forever changed the way that users communicate, access and share information," said Anne Bouverot, Director General, GSMA.
About the GSMA

BARCELONA, Feb. 27, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS -- Envision a wireless experience with maximum data rates and no dropped calls at cell edges. Envision limited service areas being a thing of the past. Envision lower costs and greener solutions for base stations. Now, envision the technology that makes all of this is possible. Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NASDAQ: TXN) today is unveiling the industry's most comprehensive wireless infrastructure System-on-Chip (SoC), featuring an ideal mix of processing elements for both ultra-high capacity small cell and macro base stations. TI's scalable TMS320TCI6636 delivers breakthrough performance, simultaneous 3G and 4G coverage and capacity expansion features that wireless operators and their users will love. For more information please visit http://www.ti.com/multicore.
"With this new small cell SoC, TI has shown us once again that they truly are entwined with operators' needs, and have a passion for delivering exceptional user experience," said Stephane Teral, principal analyst of mobile infrastructure and carrier economics, Infonetics Research. "Developers of wireless base stations only stand to benefit as TI's TCI6636 shines in performance, scalability and power efficiency. As I've said before, TI 'just gets it' as they continue to deliver innovative devices based on their powerful KeyStone platform."
Delivering a high performance solution for all, from small cells to macro
TI's TCI6636 is the first LTE Advanced (LTE-A) ready SoC, supporting 40 MHz LTE, offering an ideal high performance solution for small cell base stations, while also uniquely serving as a WCDMA/LTE macro controller device capable of supporting a multi-sector macro base station. It is architected to optimize the implementation of capacity enhancing features such as wider bandwidths, MIMO antenna configurations and advanced receiver and LTE user scheduling algorithms. The TCI6636 also supports simultaneous dual-mode, easing operators' migration from 2G to 3G to 4G and lowering CAPEX/OPEX costs by eliminating the need for equipment dedicated to each standard and the need to perform physical upgrades in the field.
Based on TI's new scalable KeyStone II multicore architecture, the TCI6636 includes the first and fastest quad ARM Cortex -A15 RISC processors, offering developers more than twice the capacity and ultra-high performance at half the power consumption of traditional RISC cores. It also leverages 28-nm silicon process to integrate a mix of processing elements including eight TI fixed- and floating-point TMS320C66x digital signal processor (DSP) generation cores, as well as enhanced packet, security and wireless AccelerationPacs. Together these processing elements, with the integration of field-proven layers 1, 2, 3 and transport processing, and operation maintenance and control processing, reduce system cost and power consumption, leading to the development of more cost-efficient, green base stations.
Going super green for macro base stations
With integral ARM Cortex -A15 RISC cores and full featured packet and security processing, the TCI6636 takes on the role of a macro cell controller, capable of supporting multi-sector macro base stations and replacing expensive and power hungry network processors. For network operations currently using base band processors, such as TI's TMS320TCI6618 SoC, the TCI6636 becomes the controller complementing its companion processors.
When network load subsides, often in the evenings, unneeded capacity of the baseband SoCs is placed in power off "night mode" with the TCI6636 assuming control of the entire load including the baseband processing load. Once in night mode, the TCI6636 drives macro base station power to new lows and performs all of the transport network termination and packet and security processing of a traditional network processor, as well as all operations and management functions. With built-in Ethernet, SRIO and antenna switching capabilities, the TCI6636 delivers further system level savings in power consumption and BoM costs. The end result is high performance for users and lower CAPEX and OPEX for operators.
The TCI6636 is code compatible with TI's entire KeyStone multicore portfolio, as well as the TMS320C64x DSP generation, ensuring all previous software investments made by TI customers can be reused. This flexibility allows base station manufacturers to develop a wide portfolio of products at a lower cost, lower power, and in less time than with competing solutions.
Analog for wireless infrastructure
TI offers a broad portfolio of complementary analog components, including data converters; amplifiers; clocks; RF and power management, for designers using the TCI6636 and other SoCs in 40-MHz LTE advanced, as well as multi-standard, multi-mode base stations beyond 100 MHz; micro and small cell base stations; and microwave backhaul applications.
Availability
The TCI6636 SoC will begin sampling in the second half of 2012.

Acision Research Shows SMS is Still the King of Messaging With Half of UK Smartphone Users Stating They Would be Lost Without it
Mobile World Congress, BARCELONA, Spain, February 27, 2012/PRNewswire/ --
New opportunities for operators to ensure messaging relevance and revenue by
providing new services which consumers want and are willing to pay for
- 95% of UK consumers polled actively use SMS
- 93% of Smartphone owners communicate with SMS, despite access to Instant
Messaging (IM) services
- 3 out of 4 Smartphone owners (74%) said they need SMS, of which 51% state they
would be lost without it
- 68% of Smartphone owners are willing to pay for RCS type services
According to new research launched by Acision at Mobile World Congress, SMS still
dominates the mobile messaging market when compared to other messaging services such as
'Over the Top' (OTT) Instant Messaging (IM) services. 95% of all respondents questioned
stated they actively use texting, significantly more than the Smartphone owners actively
using OTT/IM services such as Facebook Chat (37%), Skype (20%), Twitter (17%), Blackberry
Messenger (17%) and WhatsApp (16%) - the five most popular OTT/IM services today.
The research, which was conducted by Vanson Bourne and examines consumer messaging
habits and preferences, is the most comprehensive study to date on the mobile messaging
landscape. Based on interviews with 1000 mobile device users in the UK across smartphone
(63%) and feature phone (37%) owners, the research revealed that SMS proves most popular
with smartphone owners - 93% of this demographic reported using SMS. In fact, Smartphone
owners appear to appreciate SMS the most, with 3 out of 4 stating a clear need for SMS
(74%) - 51% of which say they would be lost without it, despite the ability to access
different OTT/IM messaging services on a Smartphone. This highlights the immense value and
dependence of text messaging in consumers' lives today.
When asked about their preference to SMS or OTT/IM mobile messaging services,
smartphone owners cited they preferred SMS because of its reach (42%); reliability (42%);
price (38%), speed of delivery (37%) and the ability to send to groups (28%). Only 4% of
smartphone users said that IM is more reliable and faster than SMS, with 35% saying that
they find SMS to be more reliable and faster.
Commenting on the research, Jorgen Nilsson, Chief Executive at Acision, said: "Reports
that suggest that SMS is on its deathbed, it seems, have been greatly exaggerated. In
fact, it appears that smartphone and feature phone owners alike are united by their
affection for text messaging. What is interesting is that SMS seems to excel on devices
that have been more commonly associated with IM services. Based on these results, we can
see a long and healthy future for SMS, the first and still the greatest of mobile
applications."
While the research shows there is a continuing appetite for SMS, users are also
interested in enhanced messaging services. When asked about SMS based personalised
services, a significant number of respondents said they would be like to use: message
delivery notifications (47%), black/white listing (40%); message copy (37%); message
search (37%) and reminder services (35%). This is evidence that there is an opportunity
for operators to extend the functionality and life span of text, increase customer loyalty
and generate premium revenues.
In order to test the appetite for Rich Communication Suite type services (RCS and
RCS-e), respondents were asked to rate a service offered by their operator that would
include IM, file transfer, group chat and video sharing, and allow them to exchange
messages with all SMS and MMS users. Only 5% of UK Smartphone users said they would not
use such a service and 68% said they would be happy to pay for such services, highlighting
the revenue-generating potential messaging still has to offer.
Nilsson concluded, "After looking at these results it is clear that while IM is
growing in popularity it still has a long way to go to catch up with the reach,
reliability and ubiquitous nature of SMS. Analysts are predicting that Mobile IM will
exceed 1.3 billion users by 2016*, compared to over 5 billion users with access to SMS
today.
"Mobile IM does have its advantages but the market is currently fragmented as services
cannot communicate with each other, and relies on a smartphone or tablet device with a
mobile broadband connection. As experts in delivering both SMS and IP messaging services,
we are excited about the new opportunities in IP messaging services but believe SMS will
still play a leading role in our messaging backbone, not only as a connectivity tool but
particularly for brands wanting to reach the 5 billion consumers with access to SMS
today."
This research is part of a wider messaging study conducted by Acision, with further
results for regions including the US being announced over the coming months. To find out

Enterproid and Box Boost Employee Productivity and Collaboration for BYOD Mobility
Divide and Box Integration Enables BYOD Users to Securely Store and Share Information Via the Cloud
BARCELONA, Spain, Feb. 27, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Enterproid(TM) and Box announced today the integration of the Divide(TM) platform for BYOD mobility with the secure content sharing and collaboration platform provided by Box. Together, Enterproid and Box are creating a rich and highly collaborative enterprise user experience that enables greater worker productivity on mobile devices.
The Divide platform delivers to mobile users a dual-persona experience with the work persona secured and cloud-managed by IT. This integration delivers the first dual persona solution that enables mobile employees to store, manage, share and backup their work data to the cloud from their personal smartphones and tablets. The innovative use of the Box cloud-storage solution with the secure dual persona of Divide delivers the business benefits of BYOD without any downside.
In a recent survey of IT leaders by CIO Magazine, over 80 percent of the respondents indicated that increased user satisfaction and productivity were the top business benefits of a BYOD policy. A similar number of respondents also reported that security was the greatest challenge for their organization when embracing the consumerization of IT.
"The integration of Divide and Box further raises the bar for BYOD mobility by boosting employee productivity and extending the ways they access and store corporate information via the cloud using their personal smartphone or tablet," said Alexander Trewby, vice president of product and co-founder of Enterproid. "This approach is a win/win for IT and employees. Workers now have easy and secure access to corporate data, regardless of their location and device, while IT has an innovative way to eliminate the risk and headaches that come with storing sensitive corporate data, such as email attachments, on a personal device."
Using this integrated solution, IT can use third-party apps in the work persona and specify via policy whether data is stored locally on the employee's personal device or in the cloud. This approach helps IT control the flow of corporate data, eliminating the use of insecure local storage such as SD cards that are easy to lose. Because it leverages Enterproid's app wrapper technology, it enables IT to use any third-party app without the software having to be modified using SDK APIs. IT administrators simply upload the app to Divide, assign the app to employees and specify data storage policies by app and employee - all in a matter of minutes.
"The explosion of tablets, smartphones and mobile applications in today's organizations has made enterprise mobility a critical component of every company's IT strategy," said Aaron Levie, CEO of Box. "CIOs are no longer playing the role of IT enforcer. Rather, through solutions like Box and Enterproid, they're empowering their workers to be more productive from anywhere, on any device, while still retaining security and visibility around content and collaboration."
The Divide platform by Enterproid enables employees to use their personal mobile device for work and life with a dual persona device experience that they can manage from MyDivide(TM). This personal management portal provides the employee a way to lock, beacon, or wipe their mobile device in the event it is lost or stolen. Similarly, Divide Manager(TM) for IT includes a fleet-management console for supporting enterprise-wide policy deployment and enforcement, including the ability to see all connected devices, set policies by group, perform remote wipes of corporate data, lock the corporate persona and administer password reset.
More than 100,000 businesses and 82% of the Fortune 500 use Box to manage information and collaboration online and from mobile devices. With today's news, Enterproid and Box make it simple for mobile business workers to share and collaborate in both their personal and professional lives from one device with the security permissions that IT admins can easily manage.

Raycap Announces New Lightning Protection Products for Remote Radio Head Systems
BARCELONA, Spain, February 27, 2012/PRNewswire/ --
The new "IS Product Series" features Strikesorb(R) SPDs to protect baseband
equipment at wireless facilities.
Mobile World Congress 2012 -- Raycap, a global manufacturer of electrical protection
solutions today announced additions to its Remote Radio Head (RRH) Product Suite. The RRH
Product Suite is engineered to protect mobile networks using Distributed Base Station
(DBS) or Remote Radio Head (RRH) architectures against damage from lightning strikes, and
to provide fiber optic and cable management solutions for these networks. The newly
announced "IS Product Series" protects the baseband units in a Distributed Base Station
configuration and features the company's innovative Strikesorb(R) Surge Protective Devices
(SPDs) as its key protective element.
Mobile data traffic is expected to grow exponentially over the next few years, and
mobile operators are implementing new solutions to manage the growing demand for data
while also lowering operational expenditures. The RRH architecture supports the explosive
growth in legacy 3G networks and facilitates the deployment of next generation 4G / LTE
mobile networks. Raycap's RRH protection equipment is designed to save operating and
installation costs by reducing downtime for all carriers that are deploying RRH systems at
radio base stations worldwide.
The key technology in the RRH Product Suite, the Strikesorb 30-V1-HV SPD, has been
engineered and tested for use specifically in DC power supply applications. Raycap's
DC-based Strikesorb 30-V1-HV is the only Class I SPD capable of withstanding multiple
direct lightning strikes and operating safely in 48V DC systems, diverting the current to
ground and away from sensitive equipment on the tower and/or in the base station.
Features and benefits of Raycap's Strikesorb-based RRH Product Suite:
- Innovative, lightweight and aerodynamic designs that combine electrical
protection with power and fiber optic cable management for outdoor installation on
roof or tower tops
- Unique systems designed to protect sensitive base station equipment inside the
shelters
- Maintenance free operation in harsh service and environmental conditions
- Certified for use in DC applications and at low DC operating voltages (48V)
and capable of withstanding multiple direct lightning strikes and electrical surges
- Flexible designs provide configurable cable ports to accommodate varying
diameters of hybrid (combined power and fiber optic) bundled or discrete cables
- Fully recognized to the UL 1449 3rd Edition Safety Standard
- Certified for compliance to the requirements of Class I SPDs according to IEC
61643-1 standard
"The addition of the IS Series baseband protection products to our RRH Product Suite
enables the protection of the entire distributed base station architecture, from the
radios at the tops of towers to the equipment inside the shelters," said Dan Sullivan, VP
of Engineering for Raycap. "Remote Radio Head systems are key to the development of the
next generation wireless networks and protection from lightning strikes is critically
important to the successful deployment of these networks."
With RRH architecture, DC power cables travel from the base station to the top of the
cell tower to power the remote radio units. The conductive copper wires are a conduit for
lightning currents, making the active equipment at both the top and the bottom of the site
susceptible to damage. Lightning is one of the main concerns most network operators have
when it comes to installing radio equipment at exposed locations. Raycap's RRH Product
Suite includes a large number of customizable water tight enclosures for installation at
the top and bottom of the tower, as well as distribution/protection enclosures specially
built for installation in shelters or cabinets. Raycap's systems make managing and
installing the long runs of power and fiber optic cables easier, and ensure the
availability and reliability of the radio and baseband equipment they are connected to.
Raycap is the global leader in the protection and interconnection of RRH sites, with
more than 60,000 sites operating using Raycap solutions.
About Raycap
Raycap is a global manufacturer and supplier of diversified products and services for
the telecommunications, defense, energy and other industrial markets. The company's

product lines. Raycap was founded in 1987 and has operations in Europe and North America.
