Small Business Innovation Research, Technology Infrastructure Can Help Create Jobs

WASHINGTON, Sept. 9, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- To help encourage job growth, Congress should reauthorize the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program and invest in America's technology infrastructure.

During his speech to Congress last night, President Barack Obama specifically cited small businesses as a key to job creation.  "Everyone here knows that small businesses are where most new jobs begin," Obama said. "And you know that while corporate profits have come roaring back, smaller companies haven't." 

One simple way that Congress can immediately help small technology companies is by passing a long-term SBIR reauthorization.

SBIR is a competitive, federally funded program that helps small companies conduct research into new technology. But because Congress has failed to pass a long-term SBIR reauthorization, companies cannot be sure of the program's reliability.

"High-tech entrepreneurs are job creators, and our country should do everything we can to support them," IEEE-USA President Ron Jensen said. "Congress' failure to reauthorize the program for more than a year at a time has created uncertainty among small technology companies, and uncertainty breeds hesitation, which breeds stagnation. Congress could end this uncertainty by passing a long-term reauthorization of the program."

Obama also highlighted the important role that infrastructure investments play in the economic health of our country. But Congress should recognize that infrastructure in the 21st century must include a robust and intelligent electrical grid. The recent blackout in parts of Southern California, Arizona and Mexico demonstrates that our grid needs to be strengthened. Emerging technologies offer innovative ways to increase the reliability and efficiency of the system.

15-Year-Old Boy with Autism Wandered to Boston's Subway System; Rescued by MBTA Transit Police Using SafetyNet by LoJack System

First Rescue in Boston Using SafetyNet System

BOSTON, Sept. 9, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Yesterday morning, a 15-year-old resident of East Boston - who has autism and is enrolled in the SafetyNet Service - wandered away from his school to one of his favorite spots - the subway system - and was rescued within approximately 20 minutes by MBTA Transit Police using the SafetyNet by LoJack System.  This is the first rescue in Boston since the service was made available in January 2011. 

The Details of the Rescue:

When school officials noticed the boy was missing, they immediately called 911.  Boston Police Department dispatch notified its ground units, as well as the MBTA Transit Police Department.  Police were alerted that the boy's last known location was North Station and arrived with their SafetyNet tracking equipment.  Approximately 20 minutes after arriving at North Station, officers with the MBTA Transit Police began picking up a signal emitting from the missing boy's SafetyNet Bracelet.  The signal was coming from Downtown Crossing and was strongest underground.  Officers went underground into the subway, boarded a train and were able to locate the boy, who was heading southbound.  Using techniques learned in the SafetyNet training sessions, the officers were able to effectively communicate with and approach the boy and ultimately safely remove him from the train.  He was rescued unharmed and later brought back to his parent.     

"We are proud of our transit police officers' quick response to this emergency situation," said Transit Police Deputy Chief Joseph O'Connor. "With the use of SafetyNet Search and Rescue Receivers, officers were able to reunite the lost child with his family within minutes." 

This is the first rescue of a client enrolled in the SafetyNet by LoJack service in the city of Boston. 

The SafetyNet service is comprised of a SafetyNet Bracelet worn by a client that emits Radio Frequency signals, which can be tracked by local public safety officials via their SafetyNet Search and Rescue Receivers.

A new advertising campaign for the 2012 Dodge Journey that encourages people to get out and explore the world instead of just reading about it, has an added twist: a chance to win one of three Journey vehicles left hidden across America.

Television and digital spots begin Sept. 9, positioning the Dodge Journey as the "Search Engine for the Real World," the perfect vehicle for people looking for adventure, flexibility and affordability. The campaign takes viewers on a tour of some of America's most picturesque landscapes while showcasing the Dodge Journey's unrivaled versatility.

The initial 30-second TV spot, "Search Engine," shows a montage of three Dodge Journeys on various adventures across America - kayakers headed out for a trip, a group of friends on a road trip and a family ready to camp. The spot ends with the viewer being told the vehicle they've just seen headed somewhere beautiful is in fact still sitting in that final real world location waiting to be discovered. The first person to find the Dodge Journey, wins it.

In all, three vehicles are positioned in the continental United States waiting to be found, one each in the West, Midwest and East.

Subsequently, three additional TV spots - "West Coast" (debuting Sept. 10), "Midwest" (debuting Sept. 16) and "East" (debuting Sept. 23) - will each reveal details on where one of the Dodge Journey vehicles is headed and where it can be found. If viewers look close enough, in nearly every frame of each of these 30-second spots are clues to the Dodge Journey vehicle's ultimate destination. The more consumers get to know about the Dodge Journey and its features, the more clues they'll uncover about where one is waiting to be discovered.

automatically migrated to .NET using Firefly's automated migration software,
while maintaining the same functionality and appearance of the Magic-based
version.

that the DdD's retail management software, which is deployed over the cloud
across 12 European territories, has been successfully migrated to .NET and
will soon replace the previous Magic-based version of the software. DdD

Aerospace Industries, and others as a Firefly customer.

    DdD's back-office has been completely migrated to .NET. The back-office
facilitates centralized management of data arriving from DdD points of sale

custom reports, inventory management, customer club management, etc. Prior
to the migration, DdD's software was based on uniPaaS - Magic Software

    Helix Multi-Track is versatile, allowing organizations to shoot multiple
camera angles while retaining the main audio track. Applications include
sporting footage, such as Formula One racing, soccer, or track and field

Producer, part of the Helix Media Delivery Platform, that includes IP
ingest, as well as batch encoding, logo and text overlay and rolling
archives. Private and government organizations will be able to take

that Helix Producer offers for a variety of mission-critical solutions and

    With IP ingest, organizations can capture both RTSP (IP surveillance or
streaming service) and MPEG2-TS (digital cable TV or satellite) streams, and

amount of manual labor required.
