Bandwidth: A growing issue for everyone

Optimizing bandwidth management and access to video on IP surveillance networks is critical to users who want to take full advantage of the capabilities of IP, megapixel and high definition (HD) cameras.  Bandwidth and video access issues only get more challenging as IP camera adoption spreads. When these are implemented the way they were designed to operate--and more importantly, the way their buyers want them to operate--these cameras, especially HD and megapixel models, can consume vast amounts of network bandwidth.

That bandwidth consumption strains conventional video management technology, such as Network Video Recorders (NVRs) and video management servers, which continue to focus on port and camera counts instead of bandwidth.

"When you start mixing standard IP cameras with HD and MP on an NVR, you can max out its performance capability long before you fill all its ports," said Max-Henri Louis-Jacques, New York City Transit.

In turn, those performance issues can lead to video being unavailable, especially during an incident, when demand for video is high.

Further, NVRs and even many video management systems can't bridge among network segments with different technology and bandwidth requirements, said Bill LeBlanc, CTO for Steelbox.

NTS Gains Advanced Testing Facility, Solid Customer Base, Presence in Important Chicago Region

CALABASAS, Calif., July 21, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- National Technical Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTSC) ("NTS"), a leading provider of testing and engineering services, announced today that it has completed a key step in its strategic growth plan with the acquisition of substantially all of the business and assets of Ingenium Testing, a leading product compliance and engineering services provider based in Rockford, IL.  NTS acquired the business and assets of Ingenium and two affiliated companies for $12.5 million in cash, plus potential earn-out consideration in the event certain performance targets are met.

NTS anticipates the acquisition will contribute at least an additional $3 million in EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) in the first full fiscal year following the acquisition. Ingenium's customer base, capabilities and service offerings are concentrated in the aerospace, heavy industry and automotive markets, all of which are among NTS' core competencies.

The staff and operations of the acquired business will continue to be located in what was Ingenium's state-of-the-art, 84,000 square foot facility in Rockford, and NTS will operate that business as part of NTS Technical Systems.  As part of the integration of the operations, NTS will take steps to expand those facilities by adding resources, equipment and new services at the Rockford location, according to William C. McGinnis, President and Chief Executive Officer of NTS.

CARLSBAD, Calif., July 20, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- ViaSat Inc. (NASDAQ: VSAT) has announced that construction of the ViaSat-1 high-capacity satellite is complete and that the spacecraft is being prepared for shipment to the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. ViaSat-1 is now scheduled for launch by International Launch Services (ILS) aboard a Proton rocket during the last week in September.

The expected summer launch of ViaSat's transformational Ka-band satellite was recently delayed when a solar array onboard the Telstar 14R communications satellite failed to fully deploy following its launch in May. Telstar 14R, like ViaSat-1, was built by Space Systems/Loral (SS/L) and uses many of the same solar array elements. An extensive, independent review of the solar array design, manufacturing, and operation was convened by SS/L, which resulted in a set of inspections, tests, and corrective actions for subsequent SS/L satellites, including ViaSat-1. That work is now complete on ViaSat-1 and the satellite has been declared ready for flight.

"We have been working closely with ILS to fit ViaSat-1 into a busy launch schedule that was disrupted by the delay," said Mark Dankberg, chairman and CEO of ViaSat. "The satellite is now complete, the spacecraft is being prepared for shipment, and a final launch date will be confirmed very soon."

Apple Releases OS X 10.7 Lion

OS X 10.7 Lion is now out. Nothing seems to be really compelling to me, but then again, I'm not an Apple user. It's a $29.99 upgrade for those who want to take the step forward. Here's one review I came accross. It's really in depth if you're interested in reading the whole thing.

For now, I'll tell you that after spending a lot of time with OS X Lion--the client--there are some issues, as I mentioned. It isn't sterling. The Launchpad implementation feels awkward on OS X. Some of the new features, like full-screen apps, take some getting used to.

For the most part, Mac users are going to embrace Lion. There's a learning curve, but that's to be expected. Apple has always pushed and challenged their users to embrace new technologies, often for the better.

Even with its flaws, I'm still psyched about Lion. It's a nice affordable update packed with more than 250 new features that sells for only $29.99.

Does this really surprise anyone? More Android phones are activated every day than any other phone. That alone paints a huge bullseye on it for hackers. If you use an Android phone, you really need to be careful as to what applications you're installing...

In the study, Dasient analyzed the live behavior of Android apps to determine their security posture. Of the 10,000 applications evaluated, more than 800 were found to be leaking personal data to an unauthorized server, Daswani says.

In addition, the researchers found that 11 of the applications were sending potentially unwanted SMS messages out to other smartphones--the mobile version of spam, Daswani says.
