Netflix Drives More Traffic Than "Surfing"

Some study done by a group that works with Comcast believes that Netflix traffic is greater than typicall web surfing traffic. I wouldn't typically post this as news, but I was drawn to a comment that was posted regarding the article. Someone mentioned that this will hopefully lead to more studios offering their movies to stream on Netflix, because it would be more profitable for them since people are downloading their movies using filesharing anyway. It's an excellent point. Not that I'm in favor of breaking the law, but at this point it doesn't seem to be a battle that studios can keep up with. If they offer the movies on Netflix, they'd at least make some money off of it rather than nothing at all from those that are sharing it. I also thought it was interesting that Netflix has more subscribers than Comcast, so it would make sense for studios to deal with them anyway. By the way, I have Comcast and they suck hard.....

A study published Tuesday by Sandvine Inc. shows that Netflix movies and TV shows account for nearly 30 percent of traffic into homes during peak evening hours, compared with less than 17 percent for Web browsing.

Only about a quarter of homes with broadband subscribe to Netflix, but watching movies and TV shows online takes up a lot of bandwidth compared with Web surfing, email and practically every other Internet activity except file sharing and videoconferencing.

As late as last year, both Web surfing and peer-to-peer file sharing — mainly the illegal trading of copyrighted movies — were each larger than Netflix's traffic.

ESPN Deportes debuts its first original scripted series, El Diez, a star-studded 10-episode scripted-drama that chronicles the life of a professional soccer player who arrives to Mexico City in search of glory. Starring Alfonso Herrera, Mexican (star of Latin America Television and Film), El Diez takes viewers through the journey of Chava Espinoza (Alfonso Herrera), a young soccer player from Ocotlan, Jalisco, whose performance in the Under-20 World Cup makes him an overnight star. Chava arrives to the capital alongside his childhood friend Jesus "El Cremas" Ramirez (Ernesto Loera) and his manager Gonzalo Gomez (Mauricio Quintana).

Pan American Games

ESPN Deportes will provide exclusive Spanish-language television coverage of the XVI Pan American Games - "Guadalajara 2011" - from October 14 to 30.  The Pan American Games take place every four years, the year before the Olympic Games, and feature 36 sports competed at the Summer Olympics.  More than 6,000 athletes are expected to compete in Guadalajara this fall, representing 42 nations from the Americas. This is the third time that Mexico hosts the event, and the first held in the state of Jalisco. 

World Football Challenge

This summer, ESPN Deportes will provide Spanish-language television coverage of the third annual World Football Challenge. Beginning on July 13 and concluding on July 30, four of the best soccer teams in Europe - Manchester United, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus and Manchester City- will face off top North American teams - Club America, New England Revolution, Los Angeles Galaxy, Vancouver Whitecaps, Toronto FC, Chicago Fire, Chivas and Chivas USA- at some of the most recognized stadiums across the U.S.

Under the agreement, ESPN will air more than 10 live matches of the tournament across four different platforms including: ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3.com and ESPN Deportes. UEFA EURO 2012

In its continued effort to present the most comprehensive soccer programming for the U.S. Hispanic fans, ESPN Deportes will be the exclusive Spanish-language television network in the United States for one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world: the UEFA EURO 2012.  Taking place from June 8 to July 1 in Poland and the Ukraine, the UEFA EURO 2012 will include 31 matches of the top European national teams.

CULVER CITY, Calif., May 17, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- In anticipation of the release of Columbia Pictures'/MGM's summer comedy Zookeeper on July 8, 2011, the studio has launched a new application themed to the movie in the App Store.  The free Zookeeper application showcases a bright, colorful, interactive environment in which users can play up to four animal-themed casual games that take advantage of the unique capabilities of iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.

The app features games starring animal characters from the movie.  Upon download, players can jump right into the action and progress as far as they can go in endless gameplay: get the monkey to collect bananas as he leaps through the branches; guide the giraffe to eat leaves on the trees before they fall to the ground; and keep the gorilla entranced with a swinging tire.

The United States version of the app also has a real world extension in which users may unlock an additional fourth game, featuring the Zookeeper elephant, by visiting a local participating zoo or aquarium (at http://www.aza.org/findzooaquarium/) accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums.  (The final game can also be unlocked by achieving the top rank in the other three games.)

China Hatches Its Own Video Game Console Brand

SHENZHEN, China, May 17, 2011 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- Companies like Google and Facebook may find it's easy to conquer and dominate the world, except one quarter of it, China. But the counterparts, or knockoffs, are blooming in the Amazing Oriental. The same thing just happens when Taishan Online Technology, or Toltech, a Shenzhen based company, announced the launch of its third generation of i-dong, the Chinese brand of home video game console.

Despite the accusing of plagiarizing Wii, PS Move and even Kinect and the fact that the name i-dong is reminiscent of some kind of adult toy, Toltech has been moderately successful in its home territory.

In an interview with Chinese local business newspaper, Xie Feng, CEO of Toltech, admitted i-dong was first inspired by Wii. "But we are not cloning Sony's PlayStation nor Microsoft's Xbox Kinect," Xie said. "All core technologies are developed by ourselves and we have patents issued by the State Intellectual Office of China."

"Shenzhen manufactures iPod, iPad, and Kinect for the world," said Xie. "Actually we do research and development besides manufacturing. We are catching up bit by bit."

i-dong is developed with the technologies supplied by China's Academy of Science, top science research institute in China, as described on the official website of Toltech. Along with CAS, Taishan Sports Group, the largest sports goods supplier for 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2010 Asian Games, is the major shareholder of Toltech.

i-dong is a motion-sensing video game console based on a handheld motion controller wand, with three cameras to track the wand's position, and inertial sensors in the wand to detect its motion. First revealed in December 2007, i-dong launched in mainland China on 20 May, 2010, offering mainly sports and fitness games.

Hardware available at launch included a sensor bar, the main motion controller, a supplementary controller, and spherical devices, such as ping pong paddle and racket, with infrared light refractor serving as markers, while the sensor bar can read infrared signals. Take the latest released game, Miya Yoga for i-dong, for example: to practice Yoga, users are required to wear spherical bands mainly made with infrared light refracting material on both hands.

According to Xie, the i-dong can be used for gaming with a PC or a set-top box, besides the dedicated i-dong box. The product is currently selling for RMB 1680, or equivalent of US$258.

Barely known by many of the over 8 million Kinect fans, Shenzhen is where Microsoft manufactured its Kinect machines, with R&D based in the United States, according to Ya-qin Zhang, vice-president of Microsoft and chairman of Microsoft China R&D Group.

In a forum held in China when Kinect debuted in late 2010, Zhang disclosed that Microsoft was seeking to introduce Xbox and Kinect to China. But there is no clear time table yet, for China will not lose its tight control on importing home video game consoles in the short term. In an ordinance enacted in 1995, all game consoles were banned amid public complaint about the negative impacts on children. It was believed that children would indulge themselves in playing games, thus abandon study.

As a matter of fact, the banning was a critical move by China to protect its video game industry rather than the children. Good news for Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony is, several big Chinese companies, included Lenovo and Asus, have announced to join the arena and welcome competition from the Big Three.

"More players entering the market is good for the industry," said Xie. "Most Chinese consumers have little idea of what a motion control video game is. We've found it hard to open the market in the past three years, when there's only one player, that's Toltech. We can beat none of those major players. We won't be beaten down, either. China's market is big enough for all players. "

With the government's competition shelter and technology support, Toltech has made ways to take most of market share, claiming to be China's NO.1 home video game console. But Toltech's ambition is not limited to China. On 12th May, 2011, i-dong's advertising video appeared on the big LED screen in the land mark New York Times Square.

Feature-Rich Projector Boasts High Brightness, High Contrast, Long Lamp Life

IRVINE, Calif., May 17, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America adds the power-packed, wide-screen WXGA WD570U to its impressive lineup of projectors for schools, universities and businesses. Its super-bright 3500 lumen output ensures presentations are clearly seen without turning the lights off, and its 3000:1 contrast ratio produces sharp, vivid images, particularly for text and spreadsheets. And with an estimated lamp life of up to 6000-hours*  (in low mode), the WD570U reduces operating and labor costs over the life of the projector.

The projector boasts LAN display, which allows up to four computers to be simultaneously connected to and displayed by the projector. The screen can then be divided into four quarters, with each computer screen shown at the same time in a two-up by two-across tiled display, a great set up for collaboration or problem solving.

The WD570U has audio standby, closed captioning and 3D-ready capabilities and is ultra quiet at 28 dBA.  It uses Texas Instruments' DLP® Dark Chip3(TM) technology for sharp, vivid images shown with remarkably high native contrast.

Users don't even need a computer to connect to the projector; they can simply convert their presentations into .PTG files or into .JPEG images, save them on a USB flash drive, plug that flash drive in to the USB port for computer-free connection and present directly from the projector. Wi-Fi support is also available for quick connection and operation (optional wi-fi dongle sold separately).

A high-power 10-watt speaker with variable audio output is built in so even when the projector is in stand-by mode, the speaker can still be used, eliminating the cost and necessity of external amplifiers and speakers.

The WD570U also offers HDMI(TM) support as well as easy set-up options for multiple video inputs. They each have an RS232 serial connector and a built-in RJ45 input that offers plug-and-play connectivity with third-party remote management products such as those made by Crestron and AMX, as well as Mitsubishi's ProjectorView Global+.

The projector is currently available and comes with Mitsubishi's three-year limited warranty on parts and labor, and a one-year limited warranty on the lamp. Like all Mitsubishi data projectors, the WD570U is covered by the Express Replacement Assistance (ERA) Program, a comprehensive nationwide service that offers next business-day replacement** for down units that are under warranty.  Optional extended warranty packages for one-year or two-year additional protection are also available to extend users' peace of mind.

Scan Logs Show That Sony Servers Were Running Extremely Dated Programs and Web Services - Vulnerabilities of Obsolete Software Known for Years on the Internet

HAMBURG, Germany, May 17, 2011/PRNewswire/ --     It was the largest data theft ever: on the 19th of April, hackers broke
into Sony servers and stole the personal information of more than 100 million
customers. Highly sensitive information available to the German magazine
COMPUTER BILD now reveals that the servers had massive security issues.

    Internet activists of Anonymous, a worldwide secret organization,
provided COMPUTER BILD with logs of scans that they had performed on Sony
servers already before the data theft. Anonymous had launched distributed
denial-of-services (DDoS) attacks on the Sony servers as a "stress test" to
bring down the conglomerate's online services. To this end, they scanned the
servers for vulnerabilities. Logs of the scans revealed glaring security
holes.

    The logs indicate that Sony was using outdated, and thus insecure,
software versions, the weaknesses of which had been documented on the
Internet for years. For example, Sony used the OpenSSH 4.4 service to encrypt
data communication - a version that permits unauthorized access by attackers.
The current version, in which those holes have been closed, is 5.7.
Furthermore, some Sony servers were running the obsolete Apache version
2.2.10. The vulnerabilities in that version - which were eliminated in 2008 -
permit DDoS and other attacks. The current version is 2.2.17.

    Anonymous claims that it has nothing to do with the theft of personal
information of millions of users. But whoever stole the data, they did not
have to overcome any major obstacles in light of the glaring security holes.

    A number of PlayStation Network servers in Europe have been back online
since Sunday. Sony promises significantly higher security standards,
hopefully with the latest software this time.
