Xyratex Expands Product Portfolio

Positions Xyratex for Growth in Media and Head Test Markets for Hard Disk Drives

HAVANT, England, Dec. 8, 2010 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Xyratex Ltd (Nasdaq: XRTX), a leading provider of enterprise class data storage subsystems and storage process technology, announced today that it has acquired the HDD component test related business and assets of Magnetic Recording Solutions, Inc. (MRS), including a 10 person development team. This acquisition expands Storage Infrastructure's portfolio in support of its growth and innovation strategy.

The acquisition immediately adds media burnish, glide and certify products to the Xyratex portfolio, and also adds significant expertise and technology related to media and head test systems and software. This expanded product portfolio coincides with the recent acquisition of the assets, as well as the development team, of Optical Systems Corporation (OSC).  OSC is a respected provider of automated production technology to the disk drive industry.

A key element of Xyratex's business strategy is to expand its portfolio of test and process technology within the disk drive industry. The acquisition of MRS will combine Xyratex's industry-leading expertise in high volume disk drive test, servo writing, and media cleaning, handling and inspection technologies with MRS' extensive experience in complex media testing and head characterization.

EarthLink Completes ITC^DeltaCom Acquisition

EarthLink Completes ITC^DeltaCom Acquisition

ATLANTA,Dec. 8, 2010 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --EarthLink, Inc. (Nasdaq: ELNK) today announced that it has completed its acquisition of ITC^DeltaCom, Inc., a leading provider of integrated communications services to customers in the southeastern United States, in a transaction valued at approximately $524 million.

Under the terms of the merger agreement, ITC^DeltaCom (Deltacom) stockholders are receiving $3.00 in cash per each share of Deltacom common stock in the transaction.  EarthLink is paying approximately $199 million in cash as part of the acquisition.  EarthLink also is assuming approximately $325 million of Deltacom's senior secured notes. 

With the close of the transaction EarthLink will begin integrating its New Edge Networks and EarthLink Business Services operations with Deltacom and will market the combined services under the 'EarthLink Business' brand name.

NEW ALBUM 'WONDERS OF THE YOUNGER' HITS STORES TODAY

Plain White T'sfrontman Tom Higgenson describes the Ian Kirkpatrick-produced Wonders of the Younger as a collection of songs designed to evoke the feeling of awe and the yearning for adventure remembered from youth.

U.S. Department of Education, OECD and partners to convene in NYC in March as prelude to WNET's Celebration of Teaching & Learning

NEW YORK, Dec. 7, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan today announced the U.S. Department of Education, the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) and Education International will convene an International Summit on the Teaching Profession in New York City, the first of its kind.

Amazon Demos Kindle For Web

In response to Google's new ebook push, Amazon is trying to one-up them by demoing a Kindle living on a website. It is basically like an online PDF readers, so I don't see what the big deal is.

An Amazon spokeswoman said via an e-mail to Computerworld late Monday that the new Kindle for the Web will "enable users to read full books in the browser and [enable] any Website to become a bookstore offering Kindle books."

The spokeswoman didn't elaborate. The Kindle for the Web concept first surfaced in September and the Tuesday announcement could be a "natural evolution" of Amazon's e-book strategy, said Allen Weiner, an analyst at Gartner.

Amazon first launched Kindle for the Web as a beta application in September to allow customers to discover new books by sampling first chapters of the books directly through Web browsers without the need for a software download. Based on the spokeswoman's statement on Monday, the new version would allow book purchases of Kindle books through various Web sites offering them. It also would also allow reading of the full book, not just samples.

HowStuffWorks.com Brings Its Smarts to the App Store with New App for iPhone and iPod touch

ATLANTA, Dec. 7, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- HowStuffWorks.com, the award-winning source of credible, unbiased, and easy-to-understand explanations of how the world actually works, has announced its HowStuffWorks App is now available on the App Store offering iPhone and iPod touch users over 30,000 ways to get smarter on-the-go.

The HowStuffWorks App delivers a holistic navigation experience with thousands of articles, plus custom audio and video podcasts, accompanied by each hosts' blog and social feeds. Users can read while they stream, comment and share all from within the App. Any user can also pick their favorites and get updates through Push Notification when new episodes are available. 

Now millions of devoted fans can bring HowStuffWorks to life through real-time dialogue via Facebook and Twitter with featured podcasters, such as iTunes chart-toppers, Josh Clark and Chuck Bryant of Stuff You Should Know. The App also features three original video series including Stuff of Genius and Stuff They Don't Want You to Know as well as thousands of facts to make any user the smartest person in the room at their next cocktail party.
