Ubuntu Dumping X (Finally)

Eventually, Ubuntu will be running on Wayland. Wayland is a new compositing engine built from the ground up AND is a display server. It takes over the X server and compositing engine into one package. Still, an X server can run in tandem with Wayland so older X applications will still run. This is one of the best pieces of news for Linux on the desktop. Wayland's entry into Ubuntu will probably take years, but it is coming.

NC State University Expands MBA Program With Online Offering To Begin Fall 2011

RALEIGH, N.C., Nov. 5, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- The NC State Jenkins MBA program (http://mgt.ncsu.edu/mba/) has announced the creation of an online MBA program, scheduled to launch in fall 2011. Through the online program, students will complete their degrees in two years, with the same academic requirements as the working professional's degree offered at both the main and the Research Triangle Park campuses. Fifteen faculty members will deliver instruction for the online MBA program, all of whom teach on the main and RTP campuses. The online degree will consist of 45 credit hours, and cost $30,600 for in-state students and $58,230 for out-of-state students. A security research firm has discovered several security problems with PayPal’s iPhone app, warning that hackers can use man-in-the-middle attacks to steal sensitive user data.


Even though it has been reported fixed by PayPal, I am not so sure I would continue using the PayPal application on the iPhone. People may want to wait this one out, and make sure that it is okay to use.

According to an audit of the app by Chicago-based viaForensics, the vulnerability stems from the app’s failure to confirm the authenticity of PayPal’s website when communicating over the Internet.

Without that confirmation, a hacker could electronically step between a user and PayPal, pretend to be the PayPal website and gather usernames and passwords. The hacker would need to be in the same physical location as the user or have gained access to the same Wi-Fi network.

In practice, that could mean setting up a Wi-Fi hotspot in a location, such as a train station, and waiting for someone to use the network for a PayPal transaction on their iPhone app. It would be a fishing expedition, but the equipment and software needed is commonly available.

The ZAP App cross-references ZAP's member wineries, educates tasters, helps them score wines, and organizes their favorites in a personal portable data base. JSTOR and Serials Solutions Partner to Enhance Discoverability of Resources

Institution-Specific Summon(TM) Search Boxes to be Piloted on JSTOR

SEATTLE, Nov. 4, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Serials Solutions, a business unit of ProQuest LLC, announced today a pilot project that will allow students and researchers at institutions subscribing to the Summon(TM) web-scale discovery service to automatically find their library's Summon(TM) service search box when they use JSTOR.  In addition to the content available on JSTOR, users will be able to easily continue to search the breadth of their particular library's collection for additional materials, enabling faster, simpler research.  The collaboration furthers the Summon(TM) service's mission to make library content easier to discover by researchers and students.

"Our partnership with JSTOR is one more example of how Serials Solutions is closing the loop on resource discovery," said Michael Gersch, senior vice president and general manager of Serials Solutions.  "With the JSTOR integration we're enabling users with a powerful means to not only engage with the content on JSTOR, but to return to their home library resources."

With more than 1,300 scholarly journals and more than 1 million images, letters and other primary sources, JSTOR is one of the world's most trusted sources for academic content, serving nearly 7,000 institutions in 159 countries.  With this pilot, JSTOR users from institutions subscribing to the Summon(TM) service will be recognized through IP authentication, prompting the appearance of their institutions' Summon(TM) search box on JSTOR.  That will allow them to run a search across the other resources available at their institution's library, providing an uninterrupted and accelerated research process.

The pilot will involve a small number of institutions and will run through June, 2011.  The goal is to make the service available to all Summon subscribing libraries thereafter.
