Ruckus Wireless Clears the Air on Wi-Fi's Biggest Enemy: Interference
Details Advanced Solution for Automatic Interference Rejection Through the Use of Patented Smart Antenna Array and Dynamic Beamforming Technologies
SUNNYVALE, Calif., May 3 -- Ruckus Wireless(TM) today applauded Cisco Systems for validating the need to confront one of Wi-Fi's biggest problems: interference.
In concert with Cisco's recent CleanAir announcement, Ruckus Wireless outlined advances in RF management technologies that go beyond mere discovery of interfering objects and conventional interference mitigation techniques involving disruptive, WLAN-wide channel and power adjustments.
Ruckus' patented smart antenna arrays coupled with dynamic beamforming intelligence enables a Wi-Fi access point (AP) to automatically detect and steer transmissions away from noisy signal paths. Interference is thwarted at the point of detection without interrupting client connections on the AP.
To further detail these techniques, Ruckus will be hosting a free technical Webinar on "Avoiding RF Interference" on Wednesday, May 26th at 10 a.m. PDT (register here: http://tinyurl.com/2dbs3v8).
"Wi-Fi is proliferating at an accelerated pace with new Wi-Fi enabled devices hitting the market every day. Interference in the unlicensed spectrum is rising quickly on IT managers' agendas. Cisco has clearly recognized this," said Steve Martin, VP of Engineering for Ruckus Wireless.
"However, Cisco's approach, like others before it, simply camouflages the problem. Wi-Fi access points using conventional antenna systems are fundamentally incapable of adapting to a changing RF environment," said Martin. "Without explicit, dynamic control over how and where RF energy is transmitted, there is no way to respond to real time interference even as it is detected. Our patented Smart Wi-Fi technologies effectively mitigate interference by automatically rejecting radio noise and steering Wi-Fi transmissions to the best signal path on-the-fly."
Martin noted that ironically, the biggest source of WLAN interference often stems from enterprises' own Wi-Fi networks. "Co-channel interference from adjacent access points is the primary culprit of wireless performance problems facing companies today. And it's only getting worse."
Understanding Wi-Fi Interference and Coping with It
A major problem for Wi-Fi networks which operate in the unregulated band, interference is the presence of unwanted RF signals (i.e., noise), that disrupt normal system operations. Legitimate transmissions may be received incorrectly in the presence of interference. When an 802.11 device hears a signal, whether it is a Wi-Fi signal or not, it will defer transmission until the signal ceases. Hence RF noise can also bring an AP to a standstill.
Traditional Wi-Fi APs use omni-directional antennas that waste energy, create interference for adjacent APs and offer little control over transmissions because omni-antennas radiate energy in all directions indiscriminately.
To maximize the Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR), "optimized" or "smart" APs employ high gain antennas or high power amplifiers. This often makes interference problems worse at a macro level and can result in other undesirable side effects such as causing mobile clients to remain associated to an AP long after they should have roamed to an AP in closer proximity.
A conventional technique for dealing with interference in a WLAN involves changing to a "cleaner" frequency channel. Channel changing by an AP requires its connected clients to disassociate and re-associate. This causes disruption to voice and video applications. Furthermore, it can have a domino effect as neighboring APs have to change their channels as well to avoid co-channel interference. A wide-spread channel adjustment throughout a WLAN may necessitate a site survey and manual tuning.
In reality, channel changing is often impractical. The vast majority of Wi-Fi devices today use the 2.4 GHz frequency band which offers only three non-overlapping channels. Even with the 5GHz band there are only 11 non-overlapping 40MHz channels available, not to mention the numerous non-Wi-Fi interferers such as microwaves, cordless phones, and video surveillance cameras that hop between multiple frequencies.
"Switching channels should be a solution of last resort. It is fundamentally better for the macro network if access points can automatically direct Wi-Fi transmission over paths that are known to be free of RF noise," said Martin. "While detecting and identifying Wi-Fi interference has been possible for years with a range of low-cost spectrum analyzers, until recently, the ability for Wi-Fi access points to proactively reject and mitigate interference in real time has eluded the industry."
Smarter Wi-Fi to the Rescue
Unlike other Wi-Fi systems, Ruckus Wireless APs integrate patented intelligent antenna array and dynamic adaptation technologies that form and direct Wi-Fi transmissions over the best available signal path in real time.
Known as BeamFlex(TM), this technology provides up to 10dB of signal gain thereby reducing the number of APs required for any given coverage while increasing the stability of client connections at long distances and challenging locations. BeamFlex also delivers up to 17dB of interference rejection, which plays a critical role in sustaining WLAN reliability and consistent performance.
Also, the self-learning, self-optimizing BeamFlex adaptation algorithm selects the optimum antenna combination to steer each packet over the best path. Learning from the feedback packets inherent in the 802.11 protocol, BeamFlex determines if the best performance is being achieved for each client at any given time. If performance to a client begins to degrade due to interference, obstacles or other environmental conditions, BeamFlex immediately adapts to the current optimum antenna combination, thereby avoiding problem signal paths to ensure the highest performance possible.
"Interference is better dealt with at the AP without disrupting the rest of the WLAN. Our systems take active control of signal steering to diminish the impact of interference without human intervention while taking into consideration the impact on the client," said Martin. In contrast to conventional Wi-Fi technology, Ruckus BeamFlex (Smart Wi-Fi):
-- Automatically avoids Wi-Fi interference through active interference
rejection,
-- Continuously calculates and tracks the best signal path for all
clients based on implicit feedback from each client,
-- Uniquely focuses Wi-Fi signals only where they are needed,
-- Provides up to 10dB of signal gain and 17dB of interference rejection,
-- Eliminates manual tuning or site surveys necessitated by constant
channel changes,
-- Offers over 4,000 different antenna combinations that can be used to
steer each packet transmission for ultra-reliability and performance,
and
-- Delivers a two-to-four fold extension of signal range.

MAHWAH, N.J., May 3 -- Radware (NASDAQ:RDWR), a leading provider of integrated application delivery solutions for business-smart networking, today announced that it is providing a new software version to increase the performance and transaction processing capacity of its Alteon® 5-series platform to provide new levels of performance to enterprise and carrier customers.
Radware is introducing a new software that will substantially increase the performance transaction capacity of its Alteon 5412 application delivery platform. Unleashing the full power of Virtual Matrix Architecture (VMA) technology - an optimized distributed processing software architecture - combined with the OnDemand Switch® scalability and operational simplicity of the platform, increases TPS dramatically and thus, results in considerably lower total cost of ownership (TCO).
At the onset, the Alteon 5412 offered faster response times and support for high-end environments delivering up to 20Gbps of application switching throughput capacity and up to 340,000 Layer 4 transactions per second (TPS) which is 7x more processing capacity as compared to older Alteon platforms. Today, with the new software update, the Alteon 5412 increases those levels of up to 535,000 TPS in layer 4 and 300,000 TPS in layer 7. This represents a performance capacity improvement of 57% and 30% respectively.
"Such high levels of TPS, coupled with excellent latency and response time metrics, allow carriers and enterprise customers to execute their next generation data center projects - more specifically, applications with large amounts of small transactions and packets such as financial information exchange, DNS, AAA and VoIP will greatly benefit from such performance," stated Nir Ilani, Product Marketing Director, Application Delivery, Radware. "Furthermore, this is another proof point for the best TCO of Radware's On Demand Switching architecture: major performance upgrade without any need for new hardware purchases and with complete investment protection."
By integrating such ADC platforms into the network, enterprises and carriers are prepared for the next generation data center - becoming better adapted to support key drivers and initiatives such as: rapid mobile data traffic increases deriving from the rise of smart phone usage, cloud services, consolidation and virtualization. The 5412 application delivery platform is designed to support:
-- Mobile carriers - needing low latency and high TPS for steering mobile
data, , and scalability to efficiently grow to accommodate the
increased adoption of smart phones.
-- Consolidation of next generation data centers as they need flexibility
to grow capacity and lower cost per TPS.
-- Virtualization and cloud services: which require dynamic resource
allocation and on demand ADC capacity and services - without the risk
of hardware replacement or service interruption.
The Alteon 5412 OnDemand Switch delivers optimal business value by helping customers reduce capital expenditures and capacity planning risks as well as eliminate application delivery overspending by providing capacity and service scalability on demand based on a "pay-as-you-grow" model. Radware Alteon customers can reduce operational expenditures as the Alteon 5412 offers hassle-free upgrades with no downtime or need to restart the device. The product runs the same Alteon OS as previous models; thereby offering Alteon customers smooth migration to the new platform with the same proven operational simplicity and stability, without any risk or learning curve for integration into the data center environment. This combined with the lowest cost per TPS, the Alteon 5412 offers the lowest TCO.
Radware has incorporated the Alteon product family into its Business Smart Data Center solutions and strategy. The Alteon 5412 embeds Radware's on demand infrastructure approach ensuring Alteon customers can gain throughput and service scalability based on business demand.

AUO to Showcase Its Integrating Position in the Solar Supply Chain at Italy's SolarExpo
First Solar Module Plant in Czech Republic to Enter Mass Production in Q2
HSINCHU, Taiwan, May 3 -- AU Optronics Corp. ("AUO" or the "Company") (TAIEX: 2409; NYSE: AUO) will exhibit at SolarExpo 2010 in Verona, Italy from May 5-7 to showcase products including high-efficiency EcoDuo mono-crystalline solar modules, the popular EcoDuo PM220P00 multi-crystalline solar modules, and ground-mounted systems for the Italian open fields market. The SolarExpo is one of the most noted professional PV trade shows in the world. This year it boasts an increase of 22.2% in the number of exhibitors over the previous session, surpassing SNEC in China and Intersolar in Germany to become one of the most well-known industry events.
AUO will exhibit ground-mounted systems designed specially for the Italian open fields market. Also, the Company will demonstrate its capability in providing quality "PV total solutions" with its extensive experiences in modules, power systems and PV projects during the exhibition. In addition, the 230-250W EcoDuo mono-crystalline solar modules come in black or white to match conveniently with the design of buildings. Furthermore, each of them weighs 15% lighter than the same-sized modules on the market, making installation much easier.
To deliver the products in time, reduce carbon emission caused by transportation from Asia to Europe, and implement AUO's Green Solutions, AUO established a solar module plant in Brno, Czech Republic, right in the center of the European continent. The plant will start mass production in the second quarter of this year and is expected to reach the capacity of 100MW in 2011. Leveraging the Company's strength in global deployment, AUO's solar module plant in Brno is the first automated module plant in Europe(*) among Taiwanese companies. The production line is built with highly-integrated automation system, which significantly increases product precision. The quality of the solar modules is therefore guaranteed, a safeguard choice for the European users.
Due to its profound experiences in employing high-precision TFT-LCD technologies to the mass production of solar modules, AUO has become a frequent participant in the large-scale solar power system projects in Europe. The Company has applied its experiences in TFT-LCD production and yield rate management to PV modules and vertically integrated all key technologies up and down the PV value chain, from polysilicon, solar module to PV system. Unlike many others who still engage in manual mode or low-end production, AUO is capable of offering solar modules with longer lifetime and higher efficiency. Meanwhile in its clean energy business, AUO now collaborates with M. Setek to obtain quality polysilicon and solar wafers on the upstream side to produce silicon solar modules which could achieve 25 years of power performance.
In addition to endeavors in PV materials, modules and systems, AUO has also performed brilliantly in managing solar projects. In Hungen City, Germany, the Company delivered 12,672 solar modules and set up a solar park with its partners. The 2.9MWp solar-power plant is estimated to create Euro 16.79 million worth of electricity over its 20-year operation period, cutting 1,900 tons of CO2 emission each year.
AUO is currently in partnership with two major European industry players to develop open-field solar power system projects in Italy. It is estimated that the projects of PV systems will generate as much as 6.5 MWp of electricity. The Company will continue to devote itself to the production of solar modules and integration of power systems while joining many more large-scale projects and PV investments. AUO will also closely cooperate with local dealers around the world to develop a complete wholesale network of solar modules. The distribution system is expected to be established by the end of 2010.

Waveform Technology Installs Metro Ethernet Service for Macomb County
TROY, Mich., April 30 -- Waveform Technology, a leading Metro Detroit area commercial data center operator and Internet service provider, is now supplying fiber optic Internet access to Macomb County. The new connection serves both Macomb's 2,500 County Employees and MACnet, the county's own private network, by providing redundancy to the current Internet circuit.
Macomb County is among the first customers to connect to a recently constructed expansion of Waveform Technology's southeast Michigan fiber optic network.
Macomb County chose Waveform Technology for numerous reasons, but primarily because Waveform's metropolitan fiber optic network provides complete path redundancy from the county's primary Internet connection. "Owning our own network allowed us to meet the specific route stipulations that Macomb Country required," said Waveform Technology representative Noel Montales. "It provides us more flexibility than other ISPs that are just reselling local phone company assets."
Price was also an important consideration, and Waveform's independent network allows for Internet connections, and other metropolitan data services, for a fraction of the cost that other carriers charge.
Waveform Technology provisioned a 100Mbps fiber optic Metro Ethernet circuit for Macomb County. Metro Ethernet was chosen for its versatility and simplicity of design.
Macomb County continually invests in telecommunication infrastructure, both to attract businesses and to streamline county and local government activities. MACnet, Macomb County's fiber optic network, connects fifty-three separate county government buildings, as well as many school districts and city halls.

Hands-free laws, movement draws attention to perils of texting while driving
SOUTHFIELD, Mich., April 30 -- Parrot, the market leader for wireless mobile phone devices, has voiced the company's support of Oprah Winfrey's "No Phone Zone" campaign to drive awareness of the dangers of texting while driving and applauds Michigan's legislature for today signing a bill banning texting while driving.
April 30 is "No Phone Zone Day" and individuals can pledge not to text or use a handheld phone while driving. To commemorate, Parrot's U.S. employees have taken the "No Phone Zone" pledge to practice responsible driving.
"Parrot believes the best way to drive is free from all unnecessary distractions and encourages drivers to pull over before responding to a text or making a phone call," said Kelly Zachos, director of marketing North America for Parrot. "If you must make a call while driving, use a hands-free device and keep both hands on the wheel."
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, drivers who use hand-held devices are four times as likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves. Regardless of the repeated warnings, drivers continue to use cell phones while driving and this trend is not changing. In fact, a study by Nationwide Mutual Insurance determined that 81 percent of cell phone owners acknowledged that they talk on phones while driving.
Parrot provides the most comprehensive suite of hands free options, from installed car stereos with a hidden iPod compartment to cordless hands-free kits that slide onto a visor.
For less than the cost of most tickets for hands-free violations, the Parrot Minikit Slim is a portable Bluetooth hands-free kit that can be used in the car, in the office and at home. Its highly intuitive interface automatically connects to a Bluetooth phone when nearby.
Other options from Parrot include the installed MKi9200, which provide hands-free calling, automatic phone book download and voice activation, as well as streaming audio from an iPod or MP3 device; and the Parrot RKi8400, a full stereo system with hidden iPhone or iPod storage and connection.

ESA Praises Legislation for Encouraging Growth of Computer and Video Game Industry
WASHINGTON, April 30 -- The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) today commended the Florida Legislature for passing legislation (SB 1752) that will provide economic incentives for digital interactive media productions in the state.
As part of SB 1752, interactive digital media projects will be eligible for a 20% percent tax credit for qualifying production expenses. State Representative Steve Precourt and State Senator Mike Haridopolos spearheaded legislative efforts in support of dramatically improving and expanding the state's current entertainment incentive program to encourage the expansion of interactive digital media and film production in Florida.
"We applaud Representative Precourt and Senator Haridopolos for their leadership and vision in crafting this important legislation. Florida lawmakers are helping to pave the way for exciting new innovations in the entertainment industry," said Michael D. Gallagher, president and CEO of the ESA, which represents U.S. computer and video game publishers. "These incentives will help keep Florida competitive in the digital media marketplace, attracting and providing 21st Century jobs in our growing industry and boosting the state's economy."
Florida is among the nation's leaders in providing computer and video game education opportunities for students. The University of Central Florida, St. Petersburg College, and the Art Institute of Tampa, among many others, are training the next generation of computer and video game employees by offering courses and degrees in digital media. This, combined with the interactive digital media incentives, is an important way to create a business climate in the state that enables students to achieve their academic and career ambitions.

On National No Phone Zone Day, Iconosys Launches Lifesaving SMS Replier(TM)-Lite for Mobile Phones
Revolutionary App Solves the Safety Problem of Texting While Driving (TWD)
LAGUNA HILLS, Calif., April 30 -- In support of National No Phone Zone Day, Iconosys, Inc., a leader in the development of innovative mobile and stationary telecommunications applications and technologies, announced today the release of the SMS Replier(TM)-Lite featuring the free AutoDrive(TM) component - a solution to the deadly texting-while-driving social epidemic that monitors the speed of a user's vehicle.
The SMS Replier(TM)-Lite application works by enhancing the existing and exponentially growing SMS network, by joining it with new services that are now available on the most popular Smartphone platforms such as real time traffic, mapping and GPS. Users can download the SMS Replier(TM)-Lite to their Smartphone via the Android Marketplace(TM) or by visiting the SMS Replier(TM) web site, http://www.smsreplier.mobi. Other Smartphone platforms will be available shortly and users can pre-register for the product at http://www.smsreplier.com.
Unlike its market competitors, the SMS Replier(TM) AutoDrive(TM) function is offered free-of-charge as a powerful and versatile mobile phone application that knows when the user's vehicle is moving at a speed greater than 15 miles per hour. When enabled, the SMS Replier(TM) AutoDrive(TM) will automatically send a response to inbound calls and text messages. SMS Replier(TM)-Lite is a precursor to the upcoming retail release of SMS Replier(TM), which in addition to numerous added safety features to be announced, will allow for calls and texts to be returned independently and in a personally customized fashion.
"Similar to the National No Phone Zone Day effort, our mission is to save lives by providing a much needed solution to the texting while driving epidemic," said Wayne Irving II, CEO of Iconosys and co-inventor of the SMS Replier(TM) application. "The SMS Replier(TM) is designed as an enhancement to the lifestyles of users without inconvenience and allows drivers to safely take advantage of the latest Smartphone technology while remaining focused on driving."
Texting while driving (TWD) continues to be one of the most dangerous threats on our nation's freeways, yet at any given time, over 800,000 people are engaged in this practice. Despite high-profile campaigns to discourage the practice, including Oprah Winfrey's "No Phone Zone" pledge drive which has attracted and signed nearly 2,000,000 pledges, TWD continues to cause untold damage on our nation's (and the world's) roadways. According to the National Health Transportation Safety Authority (NHTSA), distracted driving practices, including texting or reading emails while driving, accounted for approximately 6,000 deaths and 500,000 injuries in 2008 alone.
The SMS Replier(TM)-Lite GPS integration triggers the automatic text message response whenever a call arrives; the default reply of "I'm Driving, I'll call or text you back as soon as I arrive at my destination" message for example. The SMS Replier(TM)-Lite is available on the Google Android(TM), which features the fastest growing Smartphone platform, and RIM's BlackBerry(TM), the established leader in corporate PEDs.
"SMS Replier(TM) eliminates the anxiety of not answering or replying to inbound texts on your mobile phone while driving, since you are reassured that the caller will be given your message of choice right away," said Irving. "In addition to the handy Texting-While-Driving integration, users can also set their mobile phones on auto-respond for a programmable period of time to accommodate other situations."
While at the movies, users don't have to worry about missing a call or text - with just one click, an auto-response can say, "I'm at the movies, I'll call/text you later." SMS Replier(TM)-Lite comes with up to 25 pre-set convenience messages that are useful in a variety of circumstances, allowing user's to automatically select easy text responses such as "in class," "in meeting," "golfing," or "busy."

EASEUS Partition Master New Updated Version Helps Convert Dynamic Disk to Basic
NEW YORK, April 30 -- EASEUS Software, a provider of affordable and all-in-one partition management solutions, today announces the release of EASEUS Partition Master in a new updated version - EASEUS Partition Master 5.8.1. This new version introduces the new feature Convert Dynamic Disk to Basic Disk that helps simplify the task of dynamic disk (volume) management like converting a dynamic disk, a resizing dynamic disk, extending a dynamic system volume, etc.
Advantages include:
-- Convert dynamic disk to basic disk directly with all data protected.
-- Simplify the work of dynamic volumes management like resizing dynamic
disk or extend dynamic system volume when it is out of space.
-- Safe and stable.
With the release of the updated version, EASEUS Partition Master makes things much easier for users -- especially for server users, who need to convert a dynamic disk back to a basic disk directly or extend a dynamic system volume or resize a dynamic volume since the built-in Windows disk management utility is pretty limited in these respects. It also saves a lot of time and effort for server users to resize or extend dynamic volumes as they can directly convert a dynamic disk to basic and then resize it.
EASEUS Partition Master, the professional partition manager and system optimization software for both Windows PC and servers, delivers a comprehensive hard disk partition management solution including resize/move partition, extend system partition, split partition, merge partition, copy partition/disk, rebuild MBR, convert dynamic disk, wipe disk, etc.
Additionally, free for home users, EASEUS Partition Master Home Edition enjoys most features of the commercial version and works well under Windows 2000/XP/Vista/Windows 7 32-bit. Download it now here: http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm

Printing Your Own Bubble Test Answer Sheets Saves Money
Software enables the printing and scoring of tests using standard printers and scanners.
SALT LAKE CITY, April 30 -- ZIP-scan.com is releasing a remarkable software program called PrintScanScore(TM) which eliminates the requirement to purchase proprietary bubble sheets for multiple choice tests. The supplied bubble answer sheet templates can be printed or copied in-house using standard paper and a ordinary printer which can save thousands of dollars over proprietary multiple choice answer sheet costs. Once printed and filled out, the marked bubble sheets can be quickly scored using a standard scanner with an automatic document feeder (ADF).
"Schools, universities and HR departments are very frustrated at having to constantly purchase copyrighted bubble test sheets from the test grader scanner manufacturer at high prices," said Rich Hedderich, VP of ZIP-scan.com. "The cost of the answer sheets can exceed the price of the test correction OMR scanner each year."
"Frequently the HR Department and higher education institutions already own a high capacity scanner. Now all standard scanners (small consumer models through large commercial units) can be used to quickly scan TIFF images of the student's marked bubble answer sheets. The PrintScanScore(TM) software will then function as a test grader and score these images and generate the detailed summary, student, and analytical reports of the test results," said Allan Jones, VP of ZIP-scan.com. "For the PrintScanScore(TM) software there are no annual support or maintenance fees. Telephone support is provided at no charge."
About ZIP-scan.com
ZIP-scan.com has been providing test correction solutions since 2002. Unlike its major competitors, ZIP-scan.com has always provided its customers with the blank multiple choice answer sheet templates and the ability to print their own bubble test sheets. A demo version of PrintScanScore(TM) is available from the company's website http://www.ZIP-scan.com.

Verizon Wireless Network Prepared for 2010 Hurricane Season
Five 'Super Switches' Cover Florida; $240 Million Invested In Past Year to Ensure Strong Service
MIAMI, April 30 -- Verizon Wireless, which operates the nation's most reliable and largest voice and 3G data network, is ready for the 2010 Hurricane Season, which begins June 1. The Florida network team recently activated its fifth "Super Switch" facility in the state.
This new communication hub, which was completed earlier this year in Broward County, joins similar "Super Switch " facilities in Tampa Bay, Jupiter, Orlando and Jacksonville that are designed to withstand Category 5 hurricanes and serve as the main call processing centers in their respective areas for Verizon Wireless customers.
These facilities are key parts of the company's reinforced infrastructure that maintains network reliability for customers in even the most severe storms and circumstances. In addition to hardened shells, they feature large-scale on-site power generation, various redundant operations and technologies, and other back-up systems to ensure the Verizon Wireless network remains strong, running and reliable.
The switch facilities also serve as emergency operation centers when hurricanes or other emergencies arise.
"The public continues to rely on wireless communication more each day, especially during storms and other critical circumstances here in the state," said Pam Tope, Florida region president of Verizon Wireless. "As the nation's largest wireless carrier, we take our role in this public safety issue very seriously."
The company has invested more than $240 million in its Florida network during the past year, and $2.1 billion in the state since the company was formed. Nationally, Verizon Wireless has spent about $55 billion to enhance its digital wireless network since 2000.
Other Verizon Wireless ongoing efforts to ensure a reliable network during the storm season and year-round include:
-- A comprehensive emergency response plan, including preparing emergency
command centers across Florida in the case of a storm or other crisis.
-- Verizon Wireless network technicians, who serve as the inspiration for
the famous TV Test Man commercials, travel the state in six high-tech
vehicles to measure the quality of voice and data calls on Verizon
Wireless and other carriers.
-- The company has a fleet of dozens of Cells on Wheels (COWS), Cells on
Light Trucks (COLTS), and generators on trailers (GOaTS) that can be
rolled into hard-hit locations or areas that need extra network
capacity.
-- Pre-arranging fuel delivery to mobile units and generators to keep the
network operating at full strength even if power is lost for an
extended period of time.
-- Erecting new digital cell sites, of which about 80 percent have their
own on-site generators and new expanded fuel tanks to extend their
power-generating capacity.
-- Installation of advanced in-building systems to boost wireless
coverage and services at hospitals, government and emergency
facilities, high-traffic public venues and other locations throughout
Florida.
-- Integrating Alltel Wireless facilities into the more advanced Verizon
Wireless network, so former Alltel customers will benefit from the
nation's most reliable voice and 3G data network.
This year, Verizon Wireless plans to launch its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) wireless services in 25 to 30 markets nationally. LTE will offer customers significantly greater network capacity than even today's most advanced 3G coverage.
Verizon Wireless operates the nation's most reliable and largest wireless voice and 3G data network, serving nearly 93 million customers. Headquartered in Basking Ridge, N.J., with 81,000 employees nationwide, Verizon Wireless is a joint venture of Verizon Communications (NYSE:VZ)(NASDAQ:VZ) and Vodafone (NASDAQ:VOD). For more information, visit http://www.verizonwireless.com. InstantAction Debuts Online Video Game Distribution Service
Game creators can now embed any video game on the Web Consumers can easily trial, purchase and download premium games via any website
LAS VEGAS, April 30 -- Browser-based gaming innovator InstantAction today announced the availability of its direct-to-consumer online video game distribution service that enables game publishers to embed premium video games anywhere on the Web, including blogs, and social media sites such as Facebook. The service debuts with LucasArts' The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition, available now.
Using a combination of in-browser, thin-client, and progressive downloading technologies, InstantAction makes embedding video games as easy as embedding a standard video or photo, and at equivalent speeds - in most cases, saving consumers hours of download time. As a result, game publishers can dramatically expand distribution by embedding games online, where gamers' recommendations and invitations are most effective.
"It was only a matter of time before the Internet disrupted the extremely limited distribution channels available to game creators, enabling direct-to-consumer access and more control over sales performance and profits," said Evan S. Wilson, senior research analyst of Pacific Crest Securities. "The InstantAction platform virtually obliterates the obstacles to game distribution by making it possible for anyone to embed any video game anywhere on the web, just like embedding a video. For game creators, this opens up distribution channels that haven't previously been an option - especially for console-quality games. For consumers, it creates endless possibilities for game discovery, risk-free trial, and faster downloads."
The InstantAction platform allows users to play The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition via Facebook; on most websites that allow users to embed objects via iframes; and popular blog sites such as TypePad, Movable Type, Tumblr, Google's Blogger, and self-hosted WordPress sites. The InstantAction embed code will also work on any webpage that allows HTML editing, and supports Javascript and iframes. Currently, The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition on the InstantAction platform can be played on PCs. Future games on InstantAction will support the Mac and mobile devices on a title-by-title basis.
"The InstantAction platform provides a brand new way to get games from their creators to customers, thus avoiding obstacles to publishing and discovering new games that are inherent in the traditional brick and mortar model," said Louis Castle, CEO of InstantAction.
"We give game creators a secure way to offer free trials, item purchases and pay-as-you play options, with a broad range of monetization formats and platform compatibility," continued Castle. "Gamers not only get the try-before-you buy and rent-to-own benefits; they can easily embed full games into their social networks, accessing their friends' lists and adding social features to games where they may not have existed. InstantAction not only changes how games are distributed and discovered, but how they are enjoyed."
To play, purchase or embed The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition on Facebook:
-- Go to the following address: apps.facebook.com/monkey-island. This
will take you to The Secret of Monkey Island application page.
-- Locate the "Add this game to your site" section, located underneath
the gameplay section of the page. The gear-icon menu provides options
for embedding the game into your page, including window size.

Medical City Hospital Partners With Dallas Fire-Rescue to Outfit First Mobile Units in Dallas County With Advanced EKG Technology
Partnership Makes City of Dallas Second-Largest U.S. City Equipped With the Technology; Medical City Is First and Only Receiving Hospital in Dallas County
DALLAS, April 30 -- A partnership announced today between Medical City Hospital and Dallas Fire-Rescue (DFR) now provides Dallas residents with the benefit of potential life-saving technology, as Medical City recently helped outfit all DFR rescue units with state-of-the-art LIFENET STEMI Management Solution cardiac alert devices.
The LIFENET device, a unique combination of web, broadband and medical technology, will drastically reduce the time it takes for a heart attack patient to receive the life-saving angioplasty procedure that gets their blood flowing again. This significant upgrade in technology could help save the lives of patients experiencing STEMI (ST-elevation myocardial infarction), a dangerous form of heart attack that impedes or blocks blood flow to the heart.
The partnership makes Dallas the second-largest city in the United States whose primary 911 agency is outfitted with the LIFENET system. Medical City also will be the first and only hospital in Dallas County capable of receiving patients connected to the LIFENET system.
All paramedics within DFR's Emergency Medical Services system are trained to recognize these particular electrocardiogram (EKG) strips and identify markers within those strips that warrant the use of the STEMI software. In conjunction, all 45 DFR rescue units as well as two Advanced Life Support (ALS) vehicles will carry the monitors that will support the transmission of this life saving data.
How the LIFENET System Can Save Lives
-- The LIFENET system allows paramedics to use the latest broadband
technology to transmit 12-lead EKGs from the field to a web-based
system at the hospital.
-- The system then distributes the information via the Internet to care
teams at the hospital's ER, catheterization lab and the cardiologist's
handheld device.
-- Rapid delivery of the EKG data allows Medical City to prepare for the
patient's arrival ahead of time.
-- Medical City also will be able to make treatment decisions while the
patient is still in transport.
-- Knowing the diagnosis before the patient arrives at Medical City can
significantly reduce the amount of time it takes to care for the
patient upon arrival and improve overall patient outcomes.
-- The standard guideline for this treatment process is currently 90
minutes. With the new software, DFR hopes to eventually shorten the
process to 60 minutes or less.
"Our investment associated with providing this technology pales in comparison to the advantage that Dallas Fire-Rescue emergency personnel and Medical City physicians now have when diagnosing and treating heart attack patients," said Erol Akdamar, president and chief executive officer of Medical City. "We saw a need that we believed we could fill and we are honored to be able to support Dallas Fire-Rescue and serve our community in this way."
"The technology in itself is remarkable," said DFR's deputy chief of the EMS Response Bureau, Bobby D. Ross, "but even more remarkable is that it puts us at the cutting edge of pre-hospital cardiac care."
Because STEMI affects one or more of the arteries that carry blood to the heart, it poses a serious threat to the heart muscle. Studies show that time from the onset of STEMI to treatment at the hospital is critical for improving survival and outcomes for these patients.
With the LIFENET system, Medical City will be able make treatment decisions while the patient is still in transport ensuring that Medical City care teams will continue meeting and eventually surpass the guidelines for treatment in 90 minutes or less, as recommended by the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology.
"When it comes to heart attacks, lost time can mean lost heart muscle," said Dr. Matthew Bush, medical director of emergency services at Medical City. "Anything we can do to accelerate how we diagnose and receive information on incoming patients helps us fight against the damage that lost time can cause in these cases."
"This technology benefits the citizens of our community and will save lives," said Eric Eichhorn, interventional cardiologist and medical director of the Dallas Heart Group at Medical City. "It was the right thing to do for our community and will make a difference in outcomes as patients will be treated 20 to 30 minutes sooner."

About Dallas Fire and Rescue
Dallas Fire-Rescue (DFR) exists to provide the citizens of Dallas the most effective and rapid emergency, fire, rescue, and prevention services in an ever-changing environment. Since the opening of the first fire station in 1907, the name Dallas Fire Department has been synonymous with putting out fires. Over time though, due in part to fire education as well as fire retardant building construction, fire calls have taken somewhat of a back seat to another aspect of our services. Today, with over 90% of calls being medical in nature, Dallas Fire-Rescue has now become an EMS based fire department. The mission however, still remains the same: to prevent and suppress fires, educate and rescue citizens, provide emergency medical services, promote public safety and foster community relations, with a vision to become a world class fire department that sets an exemplary standard in fire prevention, rescue, suppression, and EMS through progressive leadership and innovative practices. More information about Dallas Fire-Rescue is available at http://www.dallasfirerescue.com/.

Financial Literacy Month Is Every Week at SCHOOLSAVINGS.COM!
SEATTLE, April 30 -- April is Financial Literacy month and SCHOOLSAVINGS.COM, the largest provider of online school banking programs in the United States, celebrated by launching a new service that generates income for vital education programs. While school fundraising staples such as cookie dough, chocolate bars and entertainment books raise funds, they don't provide direct student benefits all year long. Schools can now use the School Savings Program to raise vital funds by asking local businesses to sponsor the program which usually takes place before school. Local sponsors' logos appear on student deposit receipts and throughout the website. Students practice a fundamental life skill by making weekly deposits at school while schools raise funds! Volunteers that register their school on SCHOOLSAVINGS.COM by June 30th will be entered to win $100 for a fall kick-off School Savings party.
Fund raising with SCHOOLSAVINGS.COM is easy because FREE FUNDRAISING TOOLS are embedded in its website. Students do not need to sell anything. One tool lets parents support the program and their school by making a contribution when enrolling their child for weekly school banking. The second enables LOCAL BUSINESSES and financial institutions to support financial literacy AND the school by purchasing a sponsorship.
The goal of SCHOOLSAVINGS.COM is A Savings Account for Every Child. Students make deposits at school into their savings account at any bank or credit union in the United States. And families learn to save together by tracking school deposit history, maintaining a real-life savings register and monitoring savings goal progress -- all ONLINE.
Finance Professor Lewis Mandell, an expert on financial literacy at the University of Washington, strongly endorsed school-based programs that encourage savings at an early age. "My first bank account was opened for me in my elementary school in New York City. Ownership of my own account and my own money helped me establish a savings habit that has stayed with me my entire life. Every youngster should be given this opportunity."
SCHOOLSAVINGS.COM is an independent financial education program. The program has been used in more than 5000 schools since 1982. It provides a secure, innovative, affordable and convenient way for students to make savings deposits from school. It is the only school banking program approved by the US Department of Education.
