IBM Donates Supercomputer to Rice University for Biomedical Research Collaboration with Texas Medical Center
$7.6 Million Award from IBM Aimed at Helping Scientists Uncover Breakthroughs in Cancer Research
HOUSTON, March 2 -- Rice University and IBM (NYSE: IBM) today unveiled a new high-performance computing (HPC) initiative for biomedical and life sciences research that features one of the most powerful supercomputers in the Texas Medical Center. Rice scientists will use the supercomputer in collaboration with researchers from across the medical center to study cancer, AIDS and other complex diseases.
The POWER7-based supercomputer is the centerpiece of a $7.6 Million IBM Shared University Research (SUR) award to Rice for advanced biomedical research. The award -- the largest for HPC infrastructure in Rice's history -- also includes HPC software, services and life sciences expertise from IBM. Dubbed "BlueBioU," the HPC project will bring together researchers from Rice, IBM and collaborating partners within the Texas Medical Center.
The supercomputer at Rice is the first system deployed with IBM's new POWER7 microprocessors, which makes it especially attractive for researchers faced with computationally demanding and memory-intensive problems often encountered in biomedical and life sciences research. For example, the system will be particularly useful for genomic sequencing, protein folding, drug modeling and simulations of molecular-level interactions in tissues. In addition, the real-time analytics capabilities of the POWER7 hardware and software are well-suited for mining vast genomic and medical databases for clues to new treatment options and cures for complex diseases.
Capable of 18.8 teraflops -- or 18.8 trillion floating point calculations per second -- the BlueBioU platform is as powerful as the combined total of Rice's existing supercomputers.
"Our vision is to facilitate collaboration among researchers and among institutions by providing a world-class computing resource that's well-suited to a range of bioscience applications," said Kamran Khan, Rice's vice provost for information technology and one of the Rice co-leaders of the project.
"It's exciting to have the world's first POWER7 clusters here at Rice. The productivity and performance benefits of the POWER7 platform are well aligned with Rice's future directions for research computing, as well as our ultimate goal of working with the medical center to enhance treatment options and find new cures for patients," said co-leader Vivek Sarkar, Rice's E.D. Butcher Professor of Computer Science and professor of electrical and computer engineering.
The Texas Medical Center is one of the world's largest medical complexes. The medical center's 46 member institutions conduct more than $1 billion worth of research and see more than 5 million patients each year.
Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), a Texas Medical Center partner that is collaborating with Rice on the BlueBioU project, is planning to explore the entire spectrum of genomic change in cancer through the application of genome analysis technologies, including large-scale genome sequencing.
"We are unlocking the mysteries of human cancer by analyzing the genomes of 50 patients with ovarian cancer to discover the mutation profile underlying their disease," said BCM's Kim Worley, associate professor of molecular and human genetics. "If successful, we will analyze 1,000 patients with different cancers over the next year. This project will have a huge impact on our understanding of the biology of cancer and may identify potential future treatment avenues."
Largely developed at IBM's Austin, Texas research labs, the Linux-based BlueBioU system is uniquely designed for parallel processing, or running thousands of programs at the same time. It has 608 POWER7 processors, which are capable of simultaneously running 2,432 tasks.
"IBM's $7.6 million donation is a significant investment in life sciences research in Texas and will help promote Houston as a premier research collaboration center," said Tony Befi, vice president, POWER Systems and IBM senior state executive for Texas. "The POWER7 is ideal for the type of research performed at Rice and the Texas Medical Center and will help make it possible to detect and analyze patterns that may one day lead to important medical breakthroughs and smarter healthcare."
"We're proud to be working with Rice on a research project that not only supports IBM's worldwide university initiatives but is so important to the advancement of medical science," said Bernie Meyerson, IBM Fellow and vice president of innovation and global university programs. "It's exciting that we have technology available today that can help biomedical researchers tackle some of the most challenging and complex diseases we face."
The BlueBioU supercomputer is housed at Rice's $16 million state-of-the-art data center, which supports the new green-enabled technologies available on the POWER7 platform. The energy-efficient features of the POWER7-based supercomputer include the ability to create policies and protocols that optimize the balance between energy usage and performance.
The data center is connected to the Rice campus and to Texas Medical Center partners via a new $22 million network with a multi-gigabit backbone and more than a terabit of aggregate bandwidth. In addition, Rice has a new high-availability storage infrastructure that provides multiple terabytes of data storage in the data center.
Rice's BlueBioU team includes Khan, Sarkar, John Mellor-Crummey, professor of computer science and of electrical and computer engineering; Kim Andrews, manager of academic and research computing; and Chandler Wilkerson, lead system architect. For more information about BlueBioU, visit http://bluebiou.rice.edu/.
IBM's Shared University Research awards program strives to connect the research and researchers at universities with IBM Research, IBM Life Sciences, IBM Global Services and IBM's development and product labs. The SUR Awards program is designed to, among other things, increase access to IBM technologies for research and in curriculum.
Located in Houston, Rice University is consistently ranked one of America's best teaching and research universities. Known for its "unconventional wisdom," Rice is distinguished by its: size -- 3,279 undergraduates and 2,277 graduate students; selectivity -- 12 applicants for each place in the freshman class; resources -- an undergraduate student-to-faculty ratio of 5-to-1; sixth largest endowment per student among American private research universities; residential college system, which builds communities that are both close-knit and diverse; and collaborative culture, which crosses disciplines, integrates teaching and research, and intermingles undergraduate and graduate work.

Spectral granted IDE approval by U.S. FDA to conduct pivotal trial for Toraymyxin(TM)
TORONTO, March 2 -- Spectral Diagnostics Inc. (TSX:SDI), a company developing products for the treatment of sepsis, today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) approval for Toraymyxin(TM), a therapeutic hemoperfusion device that removes endotoxin from the bloodstream, allowing the Company to conduct a pivotal trial in the United States.
The EUPHRATES (Evaluating the Use of Polymyxin B Hemoperfusion in a Randomized controlled trial of Adults Treated for Endotoxemia and Septic shock) trial is a randomized, double-blinded control trial of standard of care versus standard of care and Toraymyxin(TM) directed by Spectral's Endotoxin Activity Assay (EAA(TM)), an FDA cleared assay for use in sepsis. The trial is expected to enroll approximately 360 patients at 15 sites throughout the U.S. and will have a primary end point of 28 day mortality.
"The FDA's approval of our IDE is a major step forward in the development of Toraymyxin(TM) for the U.S. market. We are on track to start the pivotal trial in the first half of 2010, using the EAA(TM) guided approach to endotoxin removal by Toraymyxin(TM) hemoperfusion in patients with septic shock. This theranostics approach, a combination of a therapeutic and diagnostic, is included in the design of our EUPHRATES trial," said Dr. Paul Walker, President and CEO of Spectral. "Also incorporated in the trial design is clinical information already available on the use of the Toraymyxin(TM) column from many previously conducted positive trials completed internationally. We look forward to confirming these findings."
Dr. Walker continued: "This theranostics strategy should address a major unmet need for more than 250,000 patients per year in the United States alone who suffer from severe sepsis and are at high risk of dying."
About Spectral Diagnostics
Spectral is a leader in the battle against sepsis. Spectral's lead product is its Endotoxin Activity Assay (EAA(TM)), the only FDA cleared assay for the measurement of endotoxin. With the growing awareness for the role of endotoxemia in sepsis and the increasing number of therapies being developed for this indication, Spectral is well-positioned to drive the adoption of the EAA(TM), which can be used to identify patients, enable therapeutics and monitor treatment. In March 2009, Spectral obtained the exclusive development and commercial rights in the U.S. for Toraymyxin(TM), a therapeutic for the treatment of sepsis that removes endotoxin from the bloodstream. Follett Software Company Achieves More Than 8,000 Percent ROI on Marketing Campaign Powered by Silverpop
ATLANTA, March 2 -- Known for empowering educators with its comprehensive educational resource management solutions, Follett Software Company was certain many customers weren't taking full advantage of all the services that could enhance their library management product. Informative email and direct mailers weren't resonating with the customer base. As a result, the company turned up its creativity, creating a "try it before you buy it" campaign to cross sell its most popular product, TitlePeek(TM), to current customers.
While marketing hoped to achieve a 2 to 5 percent conversion rate on the campaign, it achieved results significantly higher. In fact, the campaign was so successful that Follett Software recently received a gold award at MarketingSherpa's 5th Annual Email Marketing Awards in the category of Best Promotional Email Message.
"We distributed two email communications to clients who had never subscribed to our TitlePeek(TM) product before--the first announcing a free trial of the product and the second reminding them they had two weeks left before the trial was over," said Kathleen Schroeder, product marketing manager. "Using Silverpop's marketing automation solution, we were able to integrate reporting with our CRM system so we could track results from start to finish."
The results were phenomenal. Six months after the campaign launch, conversion rates were over 17 percent and the program delivered an ROI of more than 8,000 percent, far exceeding the company's original campaign goals. Schroeder said the marketing team is looking forward to creating many other successful campaigns based on this model.
"Silverpop's B2B marketing automation solution made it easy to analyze responses to the campaign," said Schroeder. "The reports proved the success as the campaign progressed, and helped gain management buy-in to offer these types of trial programs for some of our other products."
"Follett Software Company is a prime example of how creative strategy combined with a robustly sophisticated marketing automation solution can harvest powerful results," said Silverpop's CEO Bill Nussey. "And the ability to dig into the metrics of a B2B campaign to better understand what drives customers to conversion can be seen as a critical component to a highly successful program like this."

SonicWALL Strengthens Enterprise Presence With Suite of New Security Solutions
Advanced Firewall with Application Intelligence and Virtual Security Appliances Are Key Steps Towards Enabling a Vision for a Secure Future
SAN FRANCISCO, March 2 -- SonicWALL, Inc. (NASDAQ: SNWL), a leading secure network infrastructure company, announced today an advanced firewall for the enterprise delivered with Application Intelligence and Intrusion Prevention System (IPS). SonicWALL also announced a portfolio of Virtual Security Appliances as part of its vision to deliver Dynamic Security for the Global Network. These new offerings underscore SonicWALL's commitment to deliver intelligent solutions providing real time adaptation as organizations change and protect against evolving threats. To learn more visit SonicWALL at the RSA Conference at booth #2551.
Vision for a Secure Future: Dynamic Security for the Global Network
Companies strive to optimize productivity and maximize ROI by leveraging the benefits of flexible IT capabilities. The drive toward borderless networks replacing static infrastructure with dynamic platforms based on cloud-based, virtualized or mobile technologies present novel challenges for network owners.
SonicWALL's vision for a secure future combines comprehensive network protection capability with security policies linked to dynamically identified users, applications and content. This unique approach liberates network owners from the straightjacket of statically defined networks which deprived them of the choice to move to more effective network architectures.
The newly announced Network Security Appliance (NSA) E8500 enables enterprises to take advantage of technology trends such as Web 2.0, converged communications and mobility without compromising performance. SonicWALL protects the network against damage by proactively blocking threats while giving network owners the total application control they need to increase overall network performance and efficiency.
"As technology has changed so too have the threats that look to exploit new vulnerabilities," said Matt Medeiros, President and CEO, SonicWALL. "The speed at which cybercriminals attack susceptible points in a network is staggering and while traditional security measures have been sufficient in the past, that is no longer the case. Our vision of Dynamic Security compels us to deliver solutions designed to remain one step ahead of the threats and, in some instances, repel the attacks before they happen."
Today's enterprises are also challenged with capitalizing on technologies such as virtualization, cloud computing and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) to overcome the previous "one-application-per-server" model. SonicWALL's suite of Virtual Security Appliances enables enterprises to take advantage of scalable security solutions while taking advantage of equipment optimization and lower costs.
SonicWALL's vision of Dynamic Security for the Global Network leverages the SonicWALL GRID Network, comprised of millions of end points that provide continuous communication, feedback and analysis. SonicWALL's Threat Center processes this real-time information, proactively delivering defenses through dynamic updates to repel emerging threats.
SonicWALL further leverages technological innovation with its Reassembly-Free Deep Packet Inspection (RFDPI) technology - the foundation for all SonicWALL network security products. By combining our single engine with a high speed, multi-core, parallel hardware architecture, we enable simultaneous, multi-threat scanning and analysis at wire speed. This core technology provides the framework allowing the entire solution to scale for deployment in high bandwidth networks. Integrating advanced networking and remote access technologies enables SonicWALL to verify and defend the security of traditional and mobile wireless networks, users and applications --and their endpoint devices--while simultaneously scanning and disinfecting the data stream across platforms and perimeters. SonicWALL's policy and administration management provides scalability in parallel as your organization grows.

New Multi-Gigabit Application Intelligent Firewall from SonicWALL Secures the Enterprise
Provides Intrusion Prevention, Application Intelligence and Control functionality While Offering Improved Efficiency, Scalability and Performance
SAN FRANCISCO, March 2 -- SonicWALL, Inc. (NASDAQ: SNWL), a leading secure network infrastructure company, announced today at RSA Conference 2010, (booth #2551), the SonicWALL E-Class Network Security Appliance (NSA) E8500, a new advanced Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) firewall with Application Intelligence and Control designed for the enterprise. The NSA E8500 extends the protection of SonicWALL's network security appliances to include the management and control of data and applications that pass through the network. The NSA E8500 enhances this threat protection with intuitive visualization tools that offer network administrators a wide range of data points on applications traversing the network, including who is using them, as well as the potential security impact. The product is expected to ship in the second quarter this year.
Unparalleled Intelligence, Security and Control
As enterprises attempt to achieve more productivity benefits from their network infrastructure, they have witnessed a dramatic increase in the number of mobile devices allowing employees to work from anywhere, anytime. At the same time, the growth of Web 2.0 applications has provided widely used collaboration tools. Converged communications has emerged as another powerful productivity enabler as voice and video traffic start to co-exist with the more traditional data traffic. These technology trends present a fundamental problem for network administrators - total traffic intelligence. This intelligence is required for performance analysis, discovery and immediate action to provide smooth operations of critical systems, yet this intelligence has become increasingly elusive to capture. As a result, traditional firewalls have grown blind to the application traffic on the network and to the threats that can travel through these applications.
Intuitive traffic visualization allows the NSA E8500 to display traffic intelligence in an easy-to-understand form that enables fast network assessment. The integration of advanced networking and remote access technologies allows SonicWALL to verify and defend the security of traditional and mobile wireless networks, users and applications -- and their endpoint devices -- while scanning and disinfecting the data stream across platforms and perimeters. Robust Re-assembly Free Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) capabilities feed into the NSA E8500's integrated Application Intelligence engine, allowing the appliance to inspect hundreds of thousands of connections simultaneously with near zero latency and no file size limitations. Along with the technological scalability, SonicWALL's policy and administration management can scale as customers grow and evolve.
"The last few years have seen a fundamental shift in working styles and practices that requires organizations to implement new policies through which they can maximize employee productivity. At the same time, nefarious actions of cybercriminals and hackers have raised threats that are radically different from what these companies have seen in the past," said Patrick Sweeney, vice president of Product Management at SonicWALL. "Our vision is simple: we plan to deliver security solutions that evolve along with the organizations and the threats they encounter: dynamically and globally. With the NSA E8500 we give customers worldwide the ability to control, manage and protect their global networks seamlessly and automatically."
Through the incorporation of SonicWALL's existing foundation of E-Class NSA Series firewalls, the NSA E8500 delivers the following enterprise class features:
-- Application Intelligence and Control provides a configurable set of
granular policies per user, application, schedule or IP subnet. These
policies can be used to automate application bandwidth allocation,
restrict transfer of specific files, scan attachments using
user-configurable criteria, control and inspect both internal and
external Web access and enable users to add custom signatures.
-- Intuitive Visualization Tools offer IT administrators a wide range of
data points on applications traversing the network, including who is
using them, and potential security impact.
-- SonicWALL Reassembly-Free Deep Packet Inspection is capable of
controlling more than 1,100 unique applications on the network and
inspecting hundreds of thousands of connections simultaneously across
65,535 ports, with nearly zero latency and unlimited stream size.
-- Powerful intrusion prevention and malware protection against a
comprehensive array of network-based application layer threats by
scanning packet payloads for worms, Trojans, software vulnerabilities,
peer-to-peer and instant messenger applications, backdoor exploits,
and other malicious code.
-- Flexible deployment as either a traditional gateway or as an inline
solution that allows administrators to keep their existing
infrastructure, while adding application intelligence and control as
an extra layer of network security and visibility to their network.
Dynamic Security for the Global Network
To help customers cope with rapidly evolving and continuously changing threats, SonicWALL is committed to its vision of Dynamic Security for the Global Network, in which security solutions dynamically adapt to the continuously shifting threats and easily adjust to new technologies or business demands.

CaseCruzer Secures all Military, Police and Sportsmen Rifles up to 41" in length with New One-for-All Gun Carrying Case
Double-strength weapons case isone-size-fits-all transport innovation
MONTCLAIR, Calif., March 2 -- Civilian, military and law enforcement professionals who travel with multiple rifles and handguns can now ditch their large and clumsy 'case' collections. A new innovative one-for-all mobile transport solution called the GunCruzer KR-20 by CaseCruzer safely secures various firearms up to 41" in length.
The versatile CaseCruzer gun case is appropriate for civilian rifle and handgun enthusiasts, as well as military and law enforcement personnel. Its sleek design allows for many combinations of long rifles and handguns, depending on brand and size. Worry-free transport is possible because the new upgraded GunCruzer KR-20 is lighter than comparable gun case designs - a mere 18.5 lbs when empty - and yet more than double the strength.
The case's easy-trigger latch system outperforms competitors and is fitted with four padlock flanges that comply with new military security regulations. Also, the gun case can be fitted with optional Transportation Security Administration (TSA) approved key locks or padlocks. Side and front handles - with snap-down rubber over-molded cushion grips - and embedded wheels make tarmac, airport terminal and gun show floor maneuvers fast and smooth.
The trim one-for-all GunCruzer KR-20 allows law enforcers, hunters and collectors to simply set their firearms and gear into the case, snap it shut and move on. The base and lid interiors are padded with inter-locking, convoluted egg-crate-style foam that firmly holds guns in place so that they won't collide during turbulent transport. For even more protection, the carrying case is fitted with continuous molded-in reinforced hinges.
The case can accommodate two rifles - or one rifle and two handguns, depending on firearm dimensions. The case can also be used to transport two shotguns or a combo of one shot gun and two pistols. There is also room for magazines and desiccant.
The 45"L x 17"W x 6.38"H inch exterior dimensions of the new GunCruzer KR-20 gun case is an upgrade of previous designs because it is suitable for popular military weapons, such as the M4 or the M16 rifle, as well as many handgun brands and sizes, including the M9 and M11 (or P228). Smith & Wesson, Colt, Sig Sauer, Springfield, are among some of the brands the case can easily transport.
Other features of this gun case include a lid that stays upright after opening. The breakthrough case is ideal for rough terrain and stressful travel because it is shock proof. But CaseCruzer knows that tough is not enough. The new case is airtight, waterproof and dustproof and it is MIL-C-4150J certified. The case also protects guns from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, solvents, corrosion, fungus and is MIL-STD-810F certified.
Each KR-20 case is reusable and fitted with an automatic pressure release valve. And like all CaseCruzer gun cases, it travels with a lifetime guarantee.
Whether defending the United States from terrorism and other crimes, or enjoying the American pastimes of hunting and shooting competitions, CaseCruzer is the model of all-for-one.
The CaseCruzer network of companies provides the community with the most comprehensive packaging solutions available on reusable carrying cases for applications such as Communications, Photography, Computers, Electronics, Weapons, Medical, Transportation and other industrial shipping and carrying case uses. For more info about the new gun case, visit http://www.casecruzer.com; call 800-440-9925 in the U.S. or 909-613-1999 internationally; fax 909-465-5598; or write to CaseCruzer at 4665 State Street, Montclair, CA 91763

STMicroelectronics Launches New Dual-Interface EEPROM Enabling Remote Access to Electronic Device Parameters
New RFID-compatible EEPROMs simplify lifetime management and enable new features and capabilities
GENEVA, March 2 -- STMicroelectronics (NYSE:STM), a world leader in RF Memory and EEPROM ICs, has announced sample availability of the first in a new family of products that provide the flexibility to remotely program or update electronic products, anytime during their lifetime, and anywhere in the supply chain. The new devices enable manufacturers to update parameters, regionalize or activate software without connecting a programmer, or even opening the retail packaging. This pioneering way to access the memory will allow businesses to add new functions and capabilities to their products, but also reduce manufacturing costs, simplify inventory management, and respond more quickly to changing market demands.
The M24LR64 is an EEPROM memory with a standard I2C serial interface, providing communication with most microcontrollers or ASICs, and also a standard ISO15693 RF (radio frequency) interface for wireless communications with RFID readers. The ISO15693 standard is passive RFID technology, which gathers both the energy and the data from the RF system. No power is required to operate the M24LR64 in RF mode, which enables on-board energy savings and provides easy and convenient remote access to electronic product parameters.
"This highly innovative ability to program or read a memory wirelessly, as well as electrically, will provide tremendous added-value to our customers, enabling highly flexible supply-chain management and also stimulating new types of products with powerful features and capabilities," said Benoit Rodrigues, General Manager, Memories Division, STMicroelectronics. "Moreover this new memory is compatible with existing RFID equipment, thereby delivering a wide range of solutions and an accessible technology to product manufacturers"
Based on two industry-standard interfaces, the new dual-interface product line provides a link between the operation of electronic devices and the RFID world. This will enable new types of products, including those requiring asset tracking, data collection, diagnostics, or traceability, such as medical devices, industrial equipment, and automotive electronics. Computer peripherals and consumer products will take advantage of the M24LR64 feature set for easy and convenient parameter and regional setting update, even when the device is in its package seal. Also, RFID systems requiring additional monitoring, such as cold-chain verification, will also benefit from the high memory density of the M24LR64.
The M24LR64 has a 64-Kbit capacity for storage of program code, product parameters, serial numbers, calibration data, or event-log data. Its RF ISO15693 interface can be accessed by a wide range of RF readers, covering hand-held devices, pad antennas, gate systems and tunnel readers. The memory also communicates with the host system via an industry-standard I2C interface operating at 400kHz from 1.8 to 5.5V. It also comes with a unique and flexible 32-bit password protection scheme to protect the application from unauthorized tampering or to prevent unexpected access to memory.
The Dual-Interface EEPROM products can be used with either on-board or off-board antenna types in a variety of form factors, allowing product designers to optimize aspects such as overall dimensions, communication range, and pc-board complexity. The M24LR64 is available in TSSOP-8, SO-8, and MLP 2 x 3 packages, or as bare die, at prices from $0.90 for orders of 1000 pieces. Sampling has already begun, with volume production scheduled for Q2 2010. ST plans to introduce additional members of the Dual-Interface EEPROM family in the second half of 2010.

Attorney in Civil Contempt Case Marks One Year in Solitary 'Coercive Confinement' in L.A. County Jail
Full Disclosure Network(R) Reports
WASHINGTON, March 2 -- On March 4, 2010, Richard I Fine will mark one year in the L.A. County Jail. He accused Superior Court Judge David Yaffe of corruption for taking illegal payments from L.A. County in a case involving the County. Full Disclosure Network is releasing a seven minute video news report http://tiny.cc/aclu12 featuring court appointed ACLU jail monitors relating attempts made to get the Los Angeles County Sheriff to respond to Fine's inmate complaints. Fine has been held in solitary "coercive confinement" and since January 5, 2010 without dentures, preventing his ability to chew.
Richard Fine was ordered taken into custody by Superior Court Judge Yaffe who failed to disqualify himself from the contempt case where Fine had alleged the Judge had a conflict. Fine is a 70 year old anti-trust attorney, who holds a Ph.D in International Law. Having never been convicted of a crime, he is being held without a jury trial, without bail or hearing date and circumstances that violate U.S. Supreme Court precedent In Re Farr (1974), that ruled a five-day limit in "coercive confinement" for civil contempt of court.
The ACLU previously informed Mr. Fine's family and Full Disclosure they were unable to assist him. But when his upper dental plate broke on January 5, 2010 he complained to his jailers of difficulty eating, he realized he desperately needed help.
Full Disclosure notified Actor Ed Asner, long known as a humanitarian and who was recently honored by the ACLU for his support of Civil Liberties. Mr. Asner unhesitatingly offered to call Ramona Ripston executive director of the ACLU and wife of Ninth Circuit Court Justice Steven Reinhardt, to request help. For years the ACLU has served as the court appointed monitors of L.A. County jails to prevent inmate abuse and assure the Sheriff's response to inmate complaints.

Two Compounds Discovered That Pave the Way for New Class of AIDS Drug
IBM World Community Grid's computing strength powers breakthrough research that will guide their development
LA JOLLA, Calif., March 2 -- A team of researchers at the renowned Scripps Research Institute has discovered two new compounds that prove the existence of new binding sites on HIV protease. Associate Professor C. David Stout, senior author of the study, explained "These results open the door to a whole new approach to drug design against HIV protease," which is an enzyme used by HIV to create new, infectious viral particles.
According to the World Health Organization, about 33 million people currently live with HIV infections. Several drugs used to treat AIDS inhibit this HIV protease target, but drug-resistant mutants that impede the effectiveness of these drugs keep appearing and getting worse.
Two members of the FightAIDS@Home team, Research Associate Alex L. Perryman, Ph.D., and Professor Arthur J. Olson, were part of this innovative research and are now working to extend it. This experimental breakthrough will serve as the basis for new drug development to combat the increasing number of drug-resistant HIV strains and to improve the potency of current drug therapies. The results form the groundwork for a new class of more powerful treatments to fight HIV/AIDS. The findings appear as the March cover story in the journal Chemical Biology and Drug Design.
Utilizing computing power from 1.5 million devices networked through IBM's (NYSE:IBM) World Community Grid, the new sites on the HIV protease are being used as docking targets for virtual screening experiments, in order to guide the development of these chemical compounds into a new class of potent HIV inhibitors. Using the massive computational resources of the World Community Grid, the FightAIDS@Home team has already docked over 500,000 compounds against these newly characterized binding sites.
By aggregating the unused cycle time of 1.5 million personal computers donated by volunteers in over 80 countries, World Community Grid is now the world's largest public humanitarian grid, equivalent in power to a Top 15 supercomputer, and crunched more than 107,000 years of computational time in just 5 years for the Scripps Research Institute project, providing more than 104 million calculations.
"IBM's World Community Grid and its volunteers help us run millions of computations to evaluate the potential interactions between compounds and mutant viral proteins," said Dr. Arthur J. Olson, Anderson Research Chair Professor, Department of Molecular Biology at The Scripps Research Institute. "Through this effort we were able to significantly speed up our investigation. Without the computational power of World Community Grid, it would have taken us many more years to get to this important step in our research."
Once the HIV virus enters a human cell, it uses a small set of proteins called enzymes to force the cell to produce many new copies of itself, which then go on to infect other cells. Most HIV drugs work by blocking the operation of one or more of these enzymes. In the current work, the Scripps researchers are looking for new compounds that will stabilize the inhibited conformation, or shape, of the HIV protease enzyme, and thus help stop the virus from replicating. Because HIV mutates so frequently, some drugs that inhibit the enzyme from replicating are no longer working, or are not working as effectively. By running calculations on the World Community Grid FightAIDS@Home project, the team at Scripps is trying to develop new drugs that bind to more parts of the mutant enzyme, thereby shutting it down more effectively.
World Community Grid speeds up humanitarian research by providing scientists with millions of dollars of supercomputer power, for free, that would otherwise not be available to them.
In a second paper recently published in the Journal of Molecular Biology, the Scripps team has used computational modeling to improve understanding of another HIV enzyme and key drug target - integrase. Integrase, along with protease and a third enzyme, reverse-transcriptase, is one of three key proteins that allow the HIV virus to take over the cellular machinery of the host cell and replicate itself. By producing a more accurate model of integrase, the research allows further searches for new drug molecules that will inhibit the mutant drug resistant forms of this enzyme, as well. The Scripps team was recently awarded government stimulus funding as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to advance their new project against HIV integrase.
"The volunteers around the world who donate their computer time have helped usher in a potentially new class of drugs that may save lives and increase the quality of life for people living with HIV," said Dr. Joseph Jasinski, Distinguished Engineer and Program Director of IBM's Healthcare and Lifesciences Institute. "World Community Grid enables a smarter way to conduct promising research by providing unprecedented computing power to projects that might not be positioned to make a difference in the world without access to a free supercomputer."
The FightAIDS@home project will continue to run calculations to further this research against drug-resistant mutant "superbugs" of HIV.
"In the fight against HIV/AIDS it is important to remind people that HIV has not gone away, and that there are many things still to be done," said Joe Solmonese, President of the Human Rights Campaign. "World Community Grid is one way to get involved and makes it easy to contribute to this important research in a meaningful and effective way."
To donate your computer cycle time to humanitarian research covering areas from cancer to more nutritious rice to more efficient energy sources, please visit: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org. From this site you can install a small, safe, and secure program that will connect you to the grid. When your computer is idle, data is requested from World Community Grid's server to perform a computation. Once finished, the result is sent back to the server, prompting it for a new piece of work. It is not necessary to leave a computer on more than usual and we encourage members to continue their normal routines. We can harvest substantial computational power during a normal work day just by taking advantage of the time when someone is on the phone, talking with colleagues, taking a coffee break or doing simple tasks that don't require the full power of the computer.
Other projects running on World Community Grid have produced results including:
-- The Help Defeat Cancer project proved their more accurate technique
for identifying cancer and received a $2.5 million grant from NIH to
further deploy its system.
-- Discovering Dengue Drugs Together project has identified potential
antiviral compounds and is continuing with laboratory work on those.
-- Nutritious Rice for the World project has already returned 12 million
transactions and 11,000 years of compute time.

Microsoft Helps U.K. Retailer With Online Technology Makeover to Drive More Rapid Growth
Shop Direct Group improves employee efficiency, reduces costs with Windows 7 operating system upgrade.
REDMOND, Wash., March 2 -- Microsoft Corp. today announced that the Shop Direct Group has embraced the Windows 7 operating system to support its ambitious online growth plans for 2011. As the leader in store systems, business intelligence and digital marketing IT solutions for retail, Microsoft helps companies such as Shop Direct build their competitive position in today's challenging economic environment.
Shop Direct Group is one of the largest online and shop-at-home retail companies in the United Kingdom, operating under 11 well-known brands such as Littlewoods, Very, Woolworths, Marshall Ward, Kays and Great Universal. The company has 10,000 employees and is based in Liverpool, England, with warehouses and contact centers throughout the United Kingdom.
Primarily an online shop-at-home business, Shop Direct Group plans to increase online trading to more than 70 percent by 2011. The company recognizes that increasing its business online will require a technology makeover. To be successful, it must offer up-to-date applications to its employees on an up-to-date operating system. Also driving the decision to upgrade was the need to improve remote access for mobile workers -- approximately 10 percent of the company's employees.
"Shop Direct can't expect users to connect on an older, unreliable VPN connection," said Leslie Hand, research director at IDC Retail Insights. "This enables colleagues to work wherever they are located, giving employees easy access to the information they need when they need it. This allows them to work smarter and is a critical step for Shop Direct to evolve the business."
"The Shop Direct Group provides an excellent example of how innovative retailers can implement advanced information technology today to gain competitive advantage tomorrow," said Brendan O'Meara, managing director, worldwide retail industry, Microsoft. "Consumers are driven by value and convenience. Through delivery of better connected shopping experiences, online retailers such as the Shop Direct Group can add tangible value while enhancing their brand and cementing customer loyalty through these challenging economic times."
To help drive rapid growth, Shop Direct Group decided to upgrade its 10,000 computers to Windows 7, in addition to Windows Internet Explorer 8 Internet browser, based on a successful pilot deployment of over 100 computers in the company's lab environment. It also implemented Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R2 for centralized deployment and management. The company is also planning to upgrade its 350 servers from the Windows Server 2003 operating system to Windows Server 2008 R2.
To address its virtual private network (VPN) challenges, Shop Direct Group evaluated DirectAccess, a feature of Windows 7 that, when combined with Windows Server 2008 R2, enables employees to connect to the corporate network from virtually any Internet connection. The company's IT staff can also manage computers connected to the corporate network via DirectAccess as if they were locally connected -- helping ensure configurations are up to date and secure.
In addition, Shop Direct Group wanted to enhance its IT security, particularly with encryption, in an effort to not only protect sensitive company information but to also comply with government security regulations. As part of the upgrade, the company is implementing security enhancements to help strengthen compliance regulations. The company evaluated several encryption products but chose BitLocker drive encryption and BitLocker To Go, built-in features of Windows 7 Ultimate and Enterprise, as the solutions that would help best meet security standards and save costs. With its up-to-date IT infrastructure, including System Center Configuration Manager, Intel vPro technology, Forefront Client Security, Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7, and features such as DirectAccess, Shop Direct Group is able to manage IT more efficiently and reduce management costs.
Shop Direct Group now can perform IT management tasks, such as pushing software updates and provisioning new computers, from a central location. It will be able to service remote computers and those at other locations more quickly and without using third-party, onsite IT resources, and is expected to save valuable IT budget.
