ASTRI and Marvel Digital Limited to Establish Joint Research and Development Centre to Scale New Heights in Research of 3D Imaging and Other Innovations
HONG KONG, June 20, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) and Marvel Digital Limited (MDL or Marvel Digital) announced today that they will jointly establish the ASTRI-Marvel Digital Joint Research and Development Centre, focusing on research and development of advanced technology in 3D imaging.
At the signing ceremony, Dr. Frank Tong, Chief Executive Officer of ASTRI and Dr. Herbert Lee, Chief Executive Officer of MDL signed the collaboration agreement under the witnesses Mr. Ming-yam Wong, BBS, JP, Chairman of the Board of Directors of ASTRI and Mr. Con Unerkov, Non-Executive Director of China Integrated Media Corporation Limited (Parent company of MDL).
The Joint Research and Development Centre will be set up to achieve the following missions:
1. To further strengthen research and development on advanced technology in

and artificial intelligence.
2. To develop new application and products using the above-mentioned
technologies.
3. To build a strong and professional IC design team.
4. To cultivate research talents for both parties and for Hong Kong.

MDL is discussing with China Central Television (CCTV) for possible collaboration. An IC design team consisting of 10 researchers will take up IC design businesses nationwide. Local Motors Debuts "Olli," the First Self-driving Vehicle to Tap the Power of IBM Watson

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md., June 16, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Local Motors, the leading vehicle technology integrator and creator of the world's first 3D-printed cars, today introduced the first self-driving vehicle to integrate the advanced cognitive computing capabilities of IBM (NYSE: IBM) Watson.
The vehicle, dubbed 'Olli,' was unveiled during the Grand Opening of a new Local Motors facility in National Harbor, MD this morning, and transported Local Motors CEO and co-founder John B. Rogers, Jr. along with vehicle designer Edgar Sarmiento from the Local Motors co-creation community into the new facility. The electric vehicle, which can carry up to 12 people, is equipped with some of the world's most advanced vehicle technology, including IBM Watson Internet of Things (IoT) for Automotive, to improve the passenger experience and allow natural interaction with the vehicle.
Starting today, Olli will be used on public roads locally in DC, and late in 2016 in Miami-Dade County and Las Vegas.

Olli is the first vehicle to utilize the cloud-based cognitive computing capability of IBM Watson IoT to analyze and learn from high volumes of transportation data, produced by more than 30 sensors embedded throughout the vehicle. Using the Local Motors open vehicle development process, sensors will be added and adjusted continuously as passenger needs and local preferences are identified. Furthermore, the platform leverages four Watson developer APIs -- Speech to Text, Natural Language Classifier, Entity Extraction and Text to Speech -- to enable seamless interactions between the vehicle and passengers.
Passengers will be able to interact conversationally with Olli while traveling from point A to point B, discussing topics about how the vehicle works, where they are going, and why Olli is making specific driving decisions. Watson empowers Olli to understand and respond to passengers' questions as they enter the vehicle, including about destinations ("Olli, can you take me downtown?") or specific vehicle functions ("how does this feature work?" or even "are we there yet?"). According to an IDC InfoBrief, sponsored by Linksys, titled Revisiting the Cable Modem, Where the Internet meets the Home, IDC surveyed more than one thousand U.S. participants with an active cable modem subscription to understand the behaviors of cable modem and gateway use in the home. The research project found that the majority of people want more ways to save money on their cable bill:
-- Two-thirds of people who got their cable modem from the cable company
are paying monthly rental fees of about $10 per month. Only one in five
purchased their cable modem from a retailer, and three-quarters of them
did it to avoid the monthly fee.
There is still a lot of confusion when it comes to modems. Cable broadband service providers are rolling out more premium cable services, and requirements for the hardware and these new services are critical for providing customers the internet speeds they are paying for. Consumers are not sure what to purchase or if what they have matches the services they are paying for, thus providing slower speeds and frustrating experiences.
