Pointless? AOL has new high speed software to download.

The AOL OpenRide software lets people access multiple e-mail accounts from AOL and other providers, send and receive instant messages, browse the Web, listen to music, view photos and watch videos--all through one integrated screen. OpenRide offers access to the AOL Buddy List and Address Book and, if a contact is not online, the software turns an instant message into a text message or e-mail.

AOL is thinking about releasing some of their services for free. And in that regard, they'll be following a trend set by all those 'paid by advertising' companies that fell before them. Well, except Google.

Under terms of the proposal, which comes amid AOL's quickly depreciating subscriber base, AOL would no longer charge subscription fees to users with high-speed internet access or a dial-up service from another provider. AOL customers with "dial-up" internet access through AOL would still have to pay a monthly fee of as much as $26, the newspaper said.
