From Thread: Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang Steps Down Old Tue Nov 18, 2008 7:10:12 AM

»Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang Steps Down

In a bid to bring the company out of the backwards march, Yahoo has canned Jerry Yang. This will probably be a good move for Yahoo.

Quote

Yang patted himself on the back for moving the company in a new direction during his recent CEO tenure. His full statement:

From founding this company to guiding its growth into a trusted global brand that is indispensible to millions of people, I have always sought to do what is best for our franchise. When the board asked me to become CEO and lead the transformation of the company, I did so because it was important to re-envision the business for a different era to drive more effective growth. Having set Yahoo on a new, more open path, the time is right for me to transition the CEO role and our global talent to a new leader. I will continue to focus on global strategy and to do everything I can to help Yahoo realize its full potential and enhance its leading culture of technology and product excellence and innovation.

What wasn't said was that he weighed the company down and really screwed up a deal to make a load of money.

From Thread: An awesome book... Old Mon Nov 17, 2008 7:06:27 PM
Another book I recommend is State of Fear by Michael Crichton
He passed away a few days ago, so may he rest in peace.

The book is mainly about global climate change and an Environmental group which is using the theory along with scare tactics for its own political ends.

Very good thiller.

From Thread: USB 3.0 Specifications Finalized Old Mon Nov 17, 2008 10:32:02 AM
There is a new news item posted at »ASE Labs

»USB 3.0 Specifications Finalized

The USB Promoter Group have finally provided the finalized spec for the "SuperSpeed" USB. It is said to be 10x as fast, I'm assuming that means around 4.8Gbps (Gigabites per second). Actually transfer speeds will probably be substantially less.

Quote

Among the initial devices, external solid-state (flash) drives and hard drives are expected to be popular. "The first SuperSpeed USB devices will likely include data storage devices such as flash (solid-state drives), external hard drives, digital music players, and digitial cameras," the group said. Products aren't coming until 2010, however. "It is anticipated that initial SuperSpeed USB discrete controllers will appear in the second half of 2009 and consumer products will appear in 2010," according to the group. "The USB 3.0 Promoter Group is now accepting adopters of the USB 3.0 specification, which as been finalized at the 1.0 level," the group added.

USB 3.0 is backwards compatible with the older specifications. It will be a smooth transition just as the original USB to USB 2.0 has been.

To Froogle and areamike: Both of you just need to shut the hell up and leave. This was a really good thread and I'm sure both of you jumped to the end to make your lame "I HATE THIS SITE" comment.

With that being said, this debate has been over for a long time and there is no point in keeping it open.

The gaming industry is about to go down in flames and you'll see more indie games (that are usually much more fun to play) really pick up steam. Take Nexuiz... totally free and open, fun to play.

Just like the music industry, the gaming industry really needs to have some common sense. People buy used games because they don't want to pay the extremely high price for a piece of software. People buy used games because it is perfectly legal.

First sale... hmm...

Speaking personally, I never saw the point of small form factor flash drives. They aren't particularly smaller than the equivalent SD Card, they often cost the same (or more) than the equivalent SD card, and they usually aren't as durable as the equivalent SD card. Throw in the low speeds they usually have, the lack of usability compared to SD cards and the fact that most computers these days come with built-in SD readers and the problem just gets more pronounced.

From Thread: Daylight Savings Cost More Energy Old Mon Nov 10, 2008 8:19:09 AM
There is a new news item posted at »ASE Labs

»Daylight Savings Cost More Energy

As if anyone didn't already know this... Indiana has proved it. We should kill off DST already. Stop changing the dates, just kill it.

Quote

These findings are consistent with simulation results that point to a tradeoff between reducing demand for lighting and increasing demand for heating and cooling. We estimate a cost of increased electricity bills to Indiana households of $9 million per year. We also estimate social costs of increased pollution emissions that range from $1.7 to $5.5 million per year. Finally, we argue that the effect is likely to be even stronger in other regions of the United States.
