From Thread: Vista 64-bit Kernel Locked Down Old Wed Oct 25, 2006 6:27:09 AM
not only does the user not control what is run on their machine, but, according to the c't, a popular German computer magazine, anyone with enough money can get the certificate. This means that custom drivers are killed, but Sony can continue installing spyware drivers.

From Thread: Stallman Too Pigheaded For GPL? Old Wed Oct 25, 2006 6:22:12 AM
maybe he's a nutcase. maybe his looking like a hippy changes perception. But that doesn't change the fact this this article is FUD, inaccurate, lies and/or extremely biased against the FSF.
Also, most "problems" with the GPL aren't problems - the patent clause was just reworded, but casically didn't change the situation. That leaves the DRM clause, which just means that you can't give anyone a GPLv3'd program, thus giving them the right to modify and run it, without letting him actually run the actual modified program via DRM. You may impose DRM with the help of GPL'd software, but if you prevent people from removing it via DRM, you're in trouble.

From Thread: Hitch a ride to Mars inside an asteroid Old Mon Oct 23, 2006 11:49:02 AM
http://www.newscientistspace.com/article.ns?id=dn10358

Quote

A small population of asteroids pass by both the Earth and Mars in their orbits. So the idea is that a spacecraft containing Mars-bound astronauts could rendezvous with one of these objects as it goes by the Earth and travel with it until it nears the Red Planet.

In one version of the idea, the astronauts would actually dig a hole in the asteroid, put the spacecraft inside and cover it over with material from the asteroid. Within this protective burrow, the spacecraft would be shielded from cosmic rays during the six- to 10- month journey to Mars.

From Thread: Virii may cause memory loss Old Mon Oct 23, 2006 11:47:11 AM
http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn10359

Quote

Some people experience a number of acute picornavirus infections in their lives. This fact may explain the severe memory problems seen in some elderly people who do not have neurodegenerative illnesses, such as Alzheimer’s disease, the researchers suggest.

Charles Howe at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota, US, and colleagues injected mice with Theiler’s murine encephalomyelitis virus, which is related to human poliovirus. Because of their genetic makeup, the strain of mice used in the experiment got sick but did not develop paralysis from the infection.

From Thread: ati's r600 card... Old Sat Oct 21, 2006 4:39:38 PM
Madshrimps had a link about the dx10 card from ati, apparently it will use 300w, take up 2 slots' woth of room, and be longer than most video cards. Nvidia's g80 will supposedly be more efficient in terms of powah and size.

This is pretty rediculous, I like ati as much as the next guy (as long as he isn't Aron) but this is rediculous. If Nvidia can give me a dx10 card that uses less power I'll go with them.

From Thread: Battlefield 2142 Now With Spyware Old Sat Oct 21, 2006 3:15:32 AM
of course they wrapped up the spyware in friendly nonsense words. Just like DRM (digital restrictions management) stands for digital rights management and TC (treacherous computing) stands for trusted computing. (like I trust some American billionaire to know what I want to do with my computer better than me.

No, not the kinds with weights in them (though, I want those also), this is the kind for weight lifting.

If you don't have a pair of these things, invest $20-30 in a good pair. Your wrists will thank you.
