DJI Kicks Off 2016 DJI Developer Challenge, Releases New Mobile SDK 3.0
Competition centers around burgeoning use of drones in disaster relief efforts
LAS VEGAS, Jan. 4, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- DJI, the world leader in aerial technology, Monday kicked off its 2016 developer challenge and announced a new version of the software development kit that will underpin the competition and facilitate creation of a more robust application ecosystem for drones.
The 2016 DJI Developer Challenge, now in its third year, is a highly anticipated event for the startup and developer community. The new Mobile SDK 3.0 is the most open, flexible, and user-friendly software platform to date and participants will build their applications based on DJI's SDK suite including the new and redesigned Mobile SDK 3.0, Onboard SDK and Guidance SDK.

2016 DJI Developer Challenge
DJI is collaborating with Ford Motor Co. (NYSE Symbol F) and the United Nations Development Program (UNPD) on this year's developer challenge. Disaster relief has benefited from recent developments in aerial technology and there is an increasing use of drones by emergency response units, NGOs and the government sector around the world. Dearborn, Michigan-based Ford has been at the forefront of turning its vehicles into smart, connected platforms.
This year, DJI's challenge to developers is centered around a theoretical search-and-rescue mission. Participants will be tasked with building an application that enables a drone to autonomously take off from a moving vehicle, collect data on the whereabouts of survivors and transmit the information from the disaster site back to the vehicle, then land autonomously on the same moving vehicle.
Fifteen teams will be shortlisted into the challenge's second round. They will be provided with DJI's flagship SDK aerial platform, the Matrice 100, as well as a Zenmuse X3 camera to mount on the Matrice. The teams will provide progress reports leading up to the final competition. Ten teams will advance into the final round, where they will use their app to perform the mock search-and-rescue mission, taking off and landing on a moving Ford F-150 pickup truck and transmitting the data collected.
The competition features a US$100,000 prize to the winning team and is open to students and developers around the world.
The winner of last year's challenge was UT-Dronefly from the University of Texas at Dallas and Penn State University. Their app was designed to conduct powerline inspection in a safer and more-efficient way. In 2014, the first year of the DJI Developer Challenge, Team BetterW from the South China University of Technology developed a forensics app specifically designed for highway accident investigations.
DJI SDK 3.0 Suite
In conjunction with the 2016 Developer Challenge, DJI has released a new software development kit for both iOS and Android. After listening to feedback from SDK users and partners, DJI engineers have re-written and simplified the SDK architecture from the ground up. The Mobile SDK 3.0 brings powerful new features and a more user-friendly interface that will enable developers to streamline and speed up the development process. It will support DJI's latest aerial platforms, including the Phantom 3 series, Inspire 1 Pro, Matrice 100, as well as the Zenmuse X3, X5 cameras and the Osmo.
The new mobile SDK provides more control over the drone's onboard systems, including the camera, gimbal, flight status system, intelligent flight missions and flight control data. That means more flexibility and possibilities for developers. Other new features include:

developers get full access to the SDK suite and unlimited installation

DALLAS, Jan. 4, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T* is introducing a new family of LTE modules to meet the needs of a broad range of Internet of Things (IoT) applications. These simplify and lower the cost of IoT device designs globally and improve device performance.
The new modules offer multiple options and can run over the AT&T 4G LTE network, so IoT devices can transfer information more efficiently. An LTE-only option offers low current to improve device battery life, which is important for some IoT applications. Other module variants include built-in GPS, voice and data. Modules are available that support both 4G and 3G networks for IoT devices that need the ability to use either technology.

AT&T worked with Wistron NeWeb Corp. (WNC), a module and device manufacturer, to design the new LTE modules. They use an industry standard surface-mount package specified by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). With this state-of-the-art standard for module design, companies can build IoT devices that can more easily interchange modules for different uses. It can also simplify a transition to next-generation modules.
The M14A2A - LTE Only Category 1 can limit the amount of battery drain on an idle device compared to other LTE modules. Where 3G fallback is needed, WNC offers options such as the M14Q2 - Category 1 and M18Q2 - Category 3. The modules are expected to become available from WNC at prices planned as low as $14.99 each, plus applicable taxes, starting in the second quarter. Samples will be available for testing in the first quarter.

Super LifeJacket: Super Performance
Delivering the biggest and richest audio of Altec Lansing's portable all-weather Bluetooth speaker line, the $299.99 (MSRP) Super LifeJacket will be the first in the family with both front and back speakers for a true fill-the-room or fill-the-space sonic experience. It will also be the first in the series with a three-way speaker enclosure, featuring dual 2" neodymium woofers, dual 1.2" tweeters, dual 2.5" subwoofers and dual 3" passive radiators. The upshot: bigger bass output, brighter mids and highs, and more horsepower per dollar than any competitive speaker.
Another first will be an IP68 rating signifying that the Super LifeJacket is capable of withstanding complete, continuous submersion in water as well as intrusion from dust particles. MediaTek's MT2523 product family is based around a highly integrated system in package (SiP) that contains a micro controller unit (MCU), dual-mode Bluetooth, GPS and a power management unit (PMU). The MCU enables wearable devices with lower power consumption and smaller form factors than Android Wear. The display component supports MIPI-DSI and serial interfaces, resulting in a high-resolution mobile screen. It includes 2D capabilities of true color, per pixel alpha channel and anti-aliasing fonts, plus 1-bit index color to save memory and computing power. MT2523's low power comes from its ARM® Cortex®-M4 processor, which combines high-efficiency signal processing functionality with low power, low cost and ease-of-use benefits.
