A&W Canada Gets in the Loop with Guests to Improve Satisfaction and Real-time Operations

As part of an ongoing initiative to maximize the guest experience, A&W Canada deployed a more sophisticated method of engaging with dine-in, take-out and drive-thru customers - and acting on their insights, requests and comments in real-time.

"We were looking for a solution that would make the process of providing insight fast and simple for our guests," said Nancy Wuttunee, Senior Director Operating Excellence, A&W Canada. "Our store managers and staff also needed the ability to monitor and act on satisfaction levels in real-time during each guest visit and be able to take the necessary steps operationally to get the ratings back to our high standards."

A&W considered several options to address their requirements, including commercially available survey systems, however, they did not provide the level of real-time, location-based operational sophistication required for collecting specific guest comments on the quality of food, service and facilities, and closing the feedback loop on them immediately - preferably while the guest was still in the restaurant.

Loop(TM) helped A&W meet this challenge by giving guests the ability to quickly and easily rate their satisfaction levels in three seconds or less based on three key questions: Was your meal delicious? Were we fast and friendly? Were the facilities clean? Guests are given two different methods for providing their Loop satisfaction ratings, depending on the nature of their restaurant visit. In-store, take-out and drive-thru guests can enter their Loop ratings on a mobile web-based app. In-store guests also have the ability to enter their Loop ratings on an iPad located at a kiosk in the restaurant. "As part of our multi-channel strategy, these kiosks are an optional component of the Loop solution that we decided to invest in to make sure our guests had more than one option for entering their ratings," added Wuttunee.

Another unique and powerful feature of the Loop solution is its live electronic scoreboard, which gives restaurant staff real-time visibility into guest satisfaction metrics. Loop gives staff the ability to watch the counts go up in each category instantaneously as guests enter their Loop ratings. "Our experience to date shows that this kind of instant and live guest insight is instrumental in motivating our staff to improve the guest experience in real-time while creating a deeper personal connection between our staff and customers," Wuttunee said.

"If at any time staff members notice an uptick in negative ratings in one or more categories, then they can immediately investigate potential causes and take the appropriate corrective action." 

To date, more than 15% of A&W customers are using Loop to provide valuable input, a rate that is fifteen times higher than standard industry metrics. Response rates tend to be higher when the scoreboard is made visible to guests, suggesting that transparency and an awareness of being measured adds an important element of gamification to the process that makes guests more likely to participate.

Loop also gives A&W customers the option of commenting on specific aspects of their restaurant experience. Loop immediately relays guest comments to the restaurant manager, who is notified by text or email and can access the messages on a mobile device or computer and respond immediately - in effect closing the Loop with the customer to ensure their satisfaction.

While Loop distinguishes itself operationally in its ability to collect, display and direct actionable customer experience data in real time to staff, it also gives managers the ability to view detailed metrics over a specific time period, such as a shift, a day or a week. This at-a-glance "heat map" view is a critical tool for helping managers to identify specific periods when ratings were unusually high or unusually low.  Managers can use this data to help identify the causes behind guest experience variations and devise strategies to replicate success and improve on weak results.

"During a recent review of the heat map reports at an A&W location, we noticed that there were service and food quality problems on Wednesdays than on any other day," said Wuttunee. "Taking a closer look at this situation revealed that we had often been short-staffed on Wednesdays, which explained the pattern we noticed. When we increased the staff on Wednesdays, we immediately saw a corresponding improvement on the heat map. The up-to-the-second guest insight that Loop provides us on the quality of food, service and facilities has helped us to boost quality and productivity on a daily basis."

LONDON, October 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --

    The sucessful operational test of Phasor Solution's, flat, electronically steered
antenna array, puts the company on the fast track to deliver the world's first
commercially available, highly affordable electronically steerable antenna at Ku band in
2014.

    The demonstration was achieved with the firm's fully operational, low profile,
electronically steered, phased array antenna. The array, which is only 1" in height and
covered a surface of 0.7m x 1m, supported an HD video transmission via Intelsat 905
operating at Ku band. Phasor's patented technology successfully formed and auto-pointed
the RF beam to acquire the signal emitted from the satellite and demodulated the high
quality video.

    The beam, which is entirely formed electronically using proven conventional
technology, is steerable over a 70degree(s) cone and is totally inertia-free thus allowing
extremely rapid scanning whilst overcoming the limitations of motorised parabolic
reflector antennas and offering equivalent or greater gain. The array aperture, which is
conformable to any curved surface such as an aircraft fuselage or train roof, may be
extended to provide any required gain thus supporting very high data rate links with low
satellite capacity demands and charges.

    Phasor's engineers have fundamentally reconceived how a flat antenna array can be
constructed using low cost electronic components. Using this new approach, Phasor's
technology will unlock new, ever more affordable applications for both satellite
communications on the move (SOTM) for trains, planes, yachts & UAVs as well as distributed
phased array radar systems. More than ever, consumers are demanding persistent high
throughput communications even on board fast moving vehicles; a market need that existing
SATCOM technologies cannot easily deliver.

    Situational awareness technology advances developed by Elbit Systems of America LLC,
provide helicopter crews the visual cues they need to negotiate landings and takeoffs,
even in the most severe degraded visual environments (DVE).

    Incorporating technologies such as a Helmet Display and Tracker System (HDTS) with its
intuitive 3D conformal grid symbology, Elbit Systems of America demonstrated a greatly
enhanced level of mission capability in simulations conducted in the U.S. Army Black Hawk
Engineering Analysis Cockpit (BEAC), a fixed-based UH-60L flight simulator in Redstone
Arsenal, AL. In these rotary wing simulations, Elbit Systems of America's HDTS with 3D
symbology successfully completed 100 percent of its tests in DVE brownout conditions.
Conversely, numerous mission failures were experienced using 2D symbology under identical
conditions. Detailed U.S. Army Research Lab reports containing the results of these tests

    U.S. Army test evaluators stated that Elbit Systems of America's 3D heads-up conformal
symbology demonstrates an exceptionally strong positive effect on flight crew situation
awareness, workload task performance, and preference. It also allows pilots to safely
hover in severe brownout conditions.

    The HDTS with 3D conformal grid symbology provides intuitive visual approach and drift
cues enabling pilots to know where they are in space and time. The ancillary benefits of
the system are significant. The system delivers improved crewmember coordination by
providing indicators for one crewmember to determine the other's line-of-sight, making it
possible for both pilots to focus immediately on a designated object or area. For aircraft
equipped with automated landing systems, pilots have instant line-of-sight designations of
new landing points. Also, pilots of aircraft equipped with sensors or weapon systems can
now have hands-free, heads-up targeting and/or slewing of sensors to their line-of-sight.

FRANKLIN, Tenn., Oct. 18, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- With online gambling poised to draw millions of Americans in a potentially multi-billion dollar digital gambling market, it's more important than ever for online poker players to have a secure source to share their personal identification information with I-gaming sites. Now that Player Verify's (https://www.playerverify.com) online poker service provider license has been given the green light by the Nevada Gaming Commission along with the Control Board Technology Division, players can be assured of getting the most secure site possible, according to Player Verify managing member Mark Dalton.

"Thanks to the Nevada Gaming Commission's approval, Player Verify is ready to give Nevada online poker players and I-gaming sites a better, safer option for player ID verification," said Dalton. "Player Verify is the only site of its kind. Although it's becoming a world of digitization, there will always be a need for hard copy document verification. I've been working on this site for the past three years. Though it's outside the box of what most in the industry are used to, I've identified problems and created solutions."

Nevada I-gaming companies who use Player Verify's player authentication services will also have the ability to instantly authenticate player identity. The system has an identity checking tool that matches information submitted by U.S. players to a nationwide database of government and public information. If the information submitted lines up with the information in the database, the player is verified. The system is also designed to screen out scammers, flagging users whose submitted information is deemed fraudulent.

Launched in 2010, Player Verify is the most secure way available for online poker players to share their personal identification information -- including driver's license, passport, and proof of address scans -- with I-gaming sites. Of particular concern to site operators is Nevada's legal requirement that all personal information shared with I-gaming sites is encrypted, through a Nevada licensed service provider such as Player Verify. That level of security is not possible with email, which is how most offshore I-gaming sites currently request personal identification verification. Fortunately for Nevada online poker sites, Player Verify will now be available to bridge the gap.

Offers Only Secure Online Hub for Sharing Personal Documents

Player Verify offers a centralized hub where players can upload and share their personal ID documents to I-Gaming sites via a secure access code submitted by the player. The gaming site's compliance department then enters the access code and verifies the documents at Player Verify. Again, Player Verify provides a secure website system with up to 256-bit encryption, dedicated server.

"We are the only I-Gaming hub for this process to take place between players and multiple gaming sites at one location," said Dalton. "Some sites have added their own upload system but very few and for their players only. I call this the 'black hole' as they simply upload their personal information and it's gone. Players don't know if it's been received by the gaming site, when it was viewed and by whom and it's backed up on their gaming servers for several years."

Another key feature of Player Verify's site is having the only one click "I need to stop gambling now for players" option for problem gamblers to self-exclude online, which can be viewed by multiple gaming sites in real-time. Players are currently forced to go to every site where they've registered to stop gambling now.

UL assists laser pointer retailers and manufacturers in testing compliance to U.S. FDA CDRH requirements

NORTHBROOK, Ill., Oct. 17, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- UL (Underwriters Laboratories), a world leader in advancing safety science, announces the launch of its new laser safety testing offering for laser pointer retailers and manufacturers.

The increasingly widespread applications of laser pointers and the growing number of incidents in connection with these devices being misused have aroused concerns about laser pointer safety. Recent testing performed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which revealed that many laser pointers were not in compliance with U.S. federal safety regulations, points to the need for third party confirmation of a laser pointer manufacturer's self-certification to the FDA requirements(1). 

"Laser powers over 5mW can be hazardous, causing potential issues such as temporary visual problems or eye injuries. Therefore, the Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) mandates a laser power limit of 5mW for visible hand-held laser pointers (equivalent to CDRH Class IIIa or IEC Class 3R). Laser pointers over 5mW cannot be legally sold or marketed in, or imported into the United States," said Winn Henderson, subject matter expert for Optical Radiation, UL. 

Currently, to meet U.S. federal safety regulations, laser product manufacturers are only required to submit a self-certified CDRH report and obtain an acknowledgment letter from the CDRH for marketing, selling, or importing the product into the United States.

"Despite not requiring third party checks by law, some retailers are requesting that laser pointer manufacturers provide a third party laser safety report in order to sell their laser pointers and to better protect the safety of consumers. Therefore many manufacturers are approaching UL for laser testing, classification, and CDRH report services in pursuit of meeting these retailer requirements," said Henderson.

UL's laboratories in the United States, Japan and Korea can test all types of laser products to both CDRH and IEC laser safety requirements, resulting in a complete CDRH Report ready to file with the FDA or an IEC 60825-1 CB Test Report with CB Certificate. In addition, UL can create a specialized Laser Pointer Safety Evaluation short-form report to document the results of the laser pointer third party check. Device adds Serial Port Profile and Generic Attribute Profile Supporting Bluetooth v4.0

(TAEC)*, a committed leader that collaborates with technology companies to create breakthrough designs, today launches its TC35661SBG-501, a new device that includes the Serial Port Profile (SPP) and Generic Attribute Profile (GATT) to support the Bluetooth(® )v4.0 communications standard. Bluetooth v4.0 offers wireless connectivity to a wide range of devices, and adds Bluetooth( )Low Energy (BLE) which reduces power consumption in products such as sensors, remote controllers, thermostats, long-lasting wearable computing devices, and other low-power applications.

The SPP uses Bluetooth Classic basic data rate to attach to a host PC's COM port, and the GATT mode is used in BLE "Smart Bluetooth" applications. The SPP makes a device look like it's connected to a serial port on the Bluetooth host without needing a serial cable. The GATT profile shares information with low-power BLE devices. The TC35661SBG-501 gives user an easy way to implement a Bluetooth device capable of connecting to either Bluetooth Classic, or BLE host devices without requiring any profile software on the host. The only requirement is an available serial port.

In both cases, users don't need to implement the SPP or GATT profiles on an MCU. Normally, the SPP and GATT profiles would run on the host processor requiring a powerful MCU. By incorporating these profiles into the Bluetooth transceiver, Toshiba makes it possible to implement Bluetooth systems with a lower-cost MCU, in some cases even eliminating the need for an MCU altogether.

The operating voltage of the TC35661SBG-501 is 1.8V or 3.3V. The device comes in a 5mm x 5mm, 0.5mm ball pitch TFBGA package. It has a UART, I(2)C, and GPIO interface and is designed for low-power operation incorporating sleep mode and a host wake-up function. The device includes a complete RF section, and integrated balun requiring very few external components to implement a complete Bluetooth radio.

Sample pricing for the TC35661SBG-501device is $5.00 (U.S.). Sample shipments are currently available with mass production scheduled for November, 2013. The device is also available in a ready-to-use module.

    The injection molding process is used by manufacturers all over the world to produce
parts in a variety of materials, most commonly thermoplastics. Prototype parts are
required to evaluate the part design for performance and fit before mass production. The
ability to dramatically streamline the tool creation process for producing these prototype

TapTap senses your "taps" and instantly transmits them to the paired wristband worn by that special someone - even if they're halfway around the world. It's that simple - you tap one TapTap, the other one vibrates. TapTap opens endless possibilities for creating special signals to enrich your long-distance relationship.

TapTap takes pride in its deliberate rejection of integrating with social networks. "We've decided to go post-social and make TapTap communications very private," says Dmitry Gorilovsky, the founder of Woodenshark.
