Concur Founders Kick Off Fusion 2012 by Presenting Vision for T&E Cloud
Open Booking and The Perfect Business Trip are cornerstones of a traveler-centric future powered by technology that's mobile, social, local and personalized
REDMOND, Wash., May 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Concur (Nasdaq: CNQR), the leading provider of integrated travel and expense management services, today kicks off Fusion - the company's premier client event of the year - with a keynote by company founders outlining their vision for a future in which Concur's T&E Cloud delivers unparalleled value to every member of the corporate travel eco-system.
With more than 1,600 in attendance for four days of learning and networking, Concur CEO Steve Singh, president and COO Rajeev Singh and executive vice president of worldwide marketing Michael Hilton kick off the event at 8:30 am ET with a 90-minute live keynote presentation. Focused on the incredible value and power inherent in the T&E Cloud, Concur's three founders will present their vision of a traveler-centric future. By leveraging the key trends driving the evolution of the travel supply chain - including mobile adoption, social interactions, personalized content, the consumerization of IT, and cloud computing - the presentation will demonstrate how Concur is continuing to shape the world of business travel and expense management by making the Perfect Business Trip a reality.
The Perfect Business Trip
The needs of today's road warrior requires solutions that are traveler-centric. Through the unique power of Concur's T&E Cloud, all aspects of the travel eco-system are connected on the traveler's behalf, through technology that anticipates the traveler's every need and delivers value throughout the entire business trip. Taxis arrive when you need them, rooms are upgraded automatically, the mobile device becomes the passport to quick and easy payment and room access and expense reports are virtually eliminated. The perfect trip is now made possible based on each traveler's individual preferences and travel history stored in Concur's T&E Cloud to create and present travel options tailored to each individual.
An Open Booking Travel Model
Leakage is an ever-increasing challenge for today's managed travel programs. Even the best run programs see a meaningful percentage of their hotel bookings happen outside of the managed process. The results include inadequate attention to duty of care responsibilities and an inability to optimize supplier agreements. Companies also increasingly want to offer their travelers greater freedom and flexibility. With continued investment that leverages the power of the T&E Cloud, Concur is making it possible for companies to solve these challenges while still maintaining the visibility and control that they need over their travel spend. Companies can augment their existing travel program with open travel options, and still bring all travel transaction data back into Concur through TripIt integration. The result is fully integrated travel and expense for every trip - regardless of where it is booked.
The Concur Connect Platform
The value delivered to the entire travel eco-system by Concur's T&E Cloud is made possible by Concur Connect, the platform that enables customers, travel suppliers, and solution providers to access, build upon, and extend applications, content and T&E data aggregated through Concur. It's the combined power of those solutions that make the Open Booking travel model and the Perfect Business Trip a reality for companies of all sizes.
The Concur keynotes will be broadcast live at http://www.concur.com/fusion. Sold out for the second consecutive year, Fusion will run from May 8-11, 2012 at the Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek in Orlando, Florida.

Lucid Imagination Combines Search, Analytics and Big Data to Tackle the Problem of Dark Data
LucidWorks Big Data is Industry's First Complete Cloud-based Open Source Software Stack for Prototyping Big Data Applications
SAN MATEO, Calif., May 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Organizations today have little to no idea how much lost opportunity is hidden in the vast amounts of data they've collected and stored. They have entered the age of total data overload driven by the sheer amount of unstructured information, also called "dark" data, which is contained in their stored audio files, text messages, e-mail repositories, log files, transaction applications, and various other content stores. And this dark data is continuing to grow, far outpacing the ability of the organization to track, manage and make sense of it.
Lucid Imagination, a developer of search, discovery and analytics software based on Apache Lucene and Apache Solr technology, today unveiled LucidWorks Big Data(TM). LucidWorks Big Data is the industry's first fully integrated development stack that combines the power of multiple open source projects including Hadoop, Mahout, R and Lucene/Solr to provide search, machine learning, recommendation engines and analytics for structured and unstructured content in one complete solution available in the cloud.
Tweet This: Lucid Imagination combines #search, analytics and #BigData in complete stack. Beta now open http://ow.ly/aMHef
With LucidWorks Big Data, Lucid Imagination equips technologists and business users with the ability to initially pilot Big Data projects utilizing technologies such as Apache Lucene/Solr, Mahout and Hadoop, in a cloud sandbox. Once satisfied, the project can remain in the cloud, be moved on premise or executed within a hybrid configuration. This means they can avoid the staggering overhead costs and long lead times associated with infrastructure and application development lifecycles prior to placing their Big Data solution into production.
How big is the problem of dark data? The total amount of digital data in the world will reach 2.7 zettabytes in 2012, a 48 percent increase from 2011.* 90 percent of this data will be unstructured or "dark" data. Worldwide, 7.5 quintillion bytes of data, enough to fill over 100,000 Libraries of Congress get generated every day. Conversely, that deep volume of data can serve to help predict the weather, uncover consumer buying patterns or even ease traffic problems - if discovered and analyzed proactively.
"We see a strong opportunity for search to play a key role in the future of data management and analytics," said Matthew Aslett, research manager, data management and analytics, 451 Research. "Lucid's Big Data offering, and its combination of large-scale data storage in Hadoop with Lucene/Solr-based indexing and machine-learning capabilities, provides a platform for developing new applications to tackle emerging data management challenges."
LucidWorks Big Data
Data analytics has traditionally been the domain of business intelligence technologies. Most of these tools, however, have been designed to handle structured data such as SQL, and cannot easily tap into the broad range of data types that can be used in a Big Data application. With the announcement of LucidWorks Big Data, organizations will be able to utilize a single platform for their Big Data search, discovery and analytics needs. LucidWorks Big Data is the only complete platform that:
-- Combines the real time, ad hoc data accessibility of LucidWorks
(Lucene/Solr) with compute and storage capabilities of Hadoop
-- Delivers commonly used analytic capabilities along with Mahout's proven,
scalable machine learning algorithms for deeper insight into both
content and users
-- Tackles data, both big and small with ease, seamlessly scaling while
minimizing the impact of provisioning Hadoop, LucidWorks and other
components
-- Supplies a single, coherent, secure and well documented REST API for
both application integration and administration
-- Offers fault tolerance with data safety baked in
-- Provides choice and flexibility, via on premise, cloud hosted or hybrid
deployment solutions
-- Is tested, integrated and fully supported by the world's leading experts
in open source search
-- Includes powerful tools for configuration, deployment, content
acquisition, security, and search experience that is packaged in a
convenient, well-organized application
Lucid Imagination's Open Search Platform uncovers real-time insights from any enterprise data, whether structured in databases, unstructured in formats such as emails or social channels, or semi-structured from sources such as websites. The company's rich portfolio of enterprise-grade solutions is based on the same proven open source Apache Lucene/Solr technology that powers many of the world's largest e-commerce sites. Lucid Imagination's on-premise and cloud platforms are quicker to deploy, cost less than competing products and are more easily tailored to specific needs than business intelligence solutions because they leverage innovation from the open source community.
"We're allowing a broad set of enterprises to test and implement data discovery and analysis projects that have historically been the province of large multinationals with large data centers. Cloud computing and LucidWorks Big Data finally level the field," said Paul Doscher, CEO of Lucid Imagination. "Large companies, meanwhile, can use our Big Data stack to reduce the time and cost associated with evaluating and ultimately implementing big data search, discovery and analysis. It's their data - now they can actually benefit from it."
-- Watch the future of open search unfold on the Lucid Imagination blog

B2B Consolidation/Modernization Can Reduce Costs Up to 80%: SEEBURGER
Integrating B2B, File Transfer & SAP Processes Also Improves Supply Chains & Data Security
ATLANTA, May 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Consolidating and modernizing heterogeneous EDI, B2B and file transfer environments can reduce IT overhead associated with these functions by up to 80% while also better supporting corporate supply chains and advancing data security, according to a new white paper from SEEBURGER titled How to Get Ahead of the Competition: Consolidate and Modernize Your B2B and File Transfer Environments.
The benefits stem from replacing disparate, fragmented and departmental silo'd systems with a single modern platform like the SEEBURGER Business Integration Suite that integrates EDI, B2B and file transfer functions; eliminating legacy applications that require multiple patch upgrades and ongoing fixes to support new protocols and comply with evolving regulatory and governance requirements; and leveraging newer technology to provide end-to-end visibility of all B2B and file exchange processes for easy tracking by business users without IT intervention.
SAP shops can reap additional visibility and efficiency benefits by deploying SEEBURGER-developed SAP solution extensions that tightly integrate with SAP processes such as B2B/supply chain monitoring, order-to-cash and purchase-to-pay. Developed with industry best practices, these add-on solutions save time and money by automating functions such as invoice processing, bringing together relevant data from disparate sources in one centralized location, and enabling users to work in the familiar SAP environment.
These factors make it possible to reduce operating and maintenance staff, minimize the costs of creating new B2B/EDI and file interfaces, reduce software maintenance fees, and virtually eliminate time spent on document tracking and related message searches.
The paper also provides several case studies of successful consolidation and modernization, and outlines seven success factors for a consolidation and modernization project. It can be downloaded free of charge at http://www.seeburger.com/con-mod-white-paper/

SANTA CLARA, Calif., and LAS VEGAS, May 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Marvell (Nasdaq: MRVL) will showcase smart and superior quality LED lighting solutions with complete reference designs and control software for building residential and commercial lighting products at LIGHTFAIR International 2012, May 9 - 11, 2012.
Based on its advanced LED driver integrated circuits (ICs), microcontrollers and integrated control software technology, Marvell's total system solutions allow lighting original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and original design manufacturers (ODMs) to quickly build high-performance and affordable LED lighting products. These reference designs are available for OEMs to customize and implement into their own product designs and are also available as finished products from multiple ODMs worldwide.

Marvell at LIGHTFAIR International 2012

-- Several reference designs for retrofit LED lamps based on the new
Marvell® 88EM8183 deep dimming single stage AC/DC TRIAC LED driver
integrated circuit (IC), which achieve superior dimming performance and
compatibility using the lowest component count in the industry
-- External LED driver reference designs, including DALI and Zigbee
wireless solutions, developed for commercial lighting applications
Residential Lighting: Marvell's advanced driver ICs and reference designs offer the industry's best dimming capability for a wide variety of retrofit LED lamps, such as A19, PAR, BR, GU10 and Candle.
Marvell's new 88EM8183 driver IC offers OEMs and ODMs a superior compatible dimming solution as compared to a majority of dimmers currently on the market, and also excellent light quality, intended to decrease consumer dissatisfaction and returns. The reference designs include isolated and non-isolated versions, all with the lowest component count and smallest form factor available in the industry.
"After comparing various LED driver ICs on the market, we chose Marvell's 88EM8183 LED driver IC for our new generation dimmable retrofit lamps because it offers the best dimming performance and compatibility at the lowest component count," said George Xu, general manager of Leedarson Lighting. "Combined with Leedarson's large scale manufacturing capability and operational excellence, the Marvell 88EM8183 solution allows us to offer cost effective, reliable and best dimming retrofit LED lamp products to lighting OEMs worldwide."
Commercial Lighting and Lighting Controls: By introducing a family of high quality commercial LED external drivers and lighting control solutions, Marvell is supplying a wide range of turnkey designs for commercial lighting systems. These solutions include external driver designs optimized for downlights, panel lights and other luminaries in the 12-40W range with 1-channel, 2-channel and 4-channel options and control software. The external LED drivers feature 0-10V dimming capability that is compatible with wall box dimmers available in North American, European and Asian markets (Class 1 and Class 2). Applications that require Smart LED Lighting control, including on/off switching, dimming, color mixing or color correlation temperature (CCT) tuning, can also be developed with the addition of DALI or ZigBee® communication modules, which allows networked lighting control. The designs are based on the Marvell 88MZ100 microcontroller system on a chip (SoC) and the 88EM8801, the industry's first dual-string smart LED controller chip, which uses Marvell's unique mixed-signal power technology to enable superior lighting performance with high color rendering index (CRI) while maintaining high-levels of integration and efficiency.

Marvell and Osram Further Adoption of Superior Quality LED Lighting with Turnkey Reference Design
Marvell and Osram to showcase multi-channel professional LED lighting solution at LIGHTFAIR International 2012
SANTA CLARA, Calif., and LAS VEGAS, May 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Marvell (Nasdaq: MRVL) and Osram Opto Semiconductors today announced the availability of the Marvell-Osram two-color LED downlight reference design to further facilitate mass market adoption of high-quality, affordable LED lighting. The turnkey reference design, based on high performance LEDs from Osram and highly integrated and advanced driver ICs from Marvell, drastically reduces the engineering complexity involved in designing and manufacturing premium performance, high-color rendering index (CRI) LED luminaries for professional and commercial lighting applications. This is expected to enable lighting original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to easily develop and offer significantly higher quality LED products at more affordable prices to end users. The reference design will be shown at LIGHTFAIR International 2012 from May 9 - 11 in Las Vegas.
This turnkey reference design, based on Osram's Brilliant Mix LEDs and the Marvell® 88EM8801 LED driver IC, offers an unparalleled solution for mixing and controlling the EQ-white and amber LEDs to achieve higher CRI and lumens per watt. Marvell's 88EM8801 LED driver IC integrates circuitry for two-channel drive electronics and various on-chip digital controls, addressing complex design challenges commonly faced by OEMs, and lowering the overall bill of materials (BOM).
"With standard LEDs, current color mixing technologies make it impossible to realize a LED luminaire with both high efficiency and high CRI. EQ-white and amber LEDs have different luminous flux behavior causing complex operating temperature design challenges," said Joerg Schmidt, marketing manager with Osram Opto Semiconductors. "Joining forces with Marvell was instrumental in furthering Osram Opto Semiconductors' deployment of high-quality, low-cost LEDs for mass market commercial and residential lighting. Leveraging Marvell's innovative LED IC driver and Osram's Brilliant Mix technology, OEMs can easily build a feedback controlled system for temperature drift compensation to enable brilliant color, high performance and energy efficient lighting."
"Our collaboration with Osram Opto Semiconductors validates Marvell's continued commitment to providing innovative, high-performance and low-cost LED driver solutions that further the mass market adoption of environmentally friendly, quality lighting," said Lance Zheng, senior technical marketing manager for the Green Technology Products Group at Marvell Semiconductor, Inc. "Building on Marvell's dual-string smart LED driver controller and single chip ZigBee microcontroller, the Marvell-Osram two-color downlight reference design brings us one step closer to the widespread implementation of LED lighting. With this reference design, we anticipate manufacturers should be able to quickly produce LED lamps and fixtures with superior light quality with integrated control that not only meets, but often exceeds consumers' performance needs."
Reference Design Details
The Marvell-Osram two-color LED downlight reference design uses the Marvell dual-string intelligent LED driver IC 88EM8801 and the Marvell microcontroller System-on-a-Chip (SoC) 88MZ100. The 88EM8801 is the industry's first dual-string smart LED controller chip, which uses the company's unique mixed-signal power technology to enable superior lighting performance while maintaining high-levels of integration and efficiency. The 88MZ100 microcontroller is the industry's first SoC with the highest level of integrated features for both ZigBee and DALI standards as well as custom lighting applications. Leveraging Osram's Brilliant-Mix LED mixing concept, the reference design achieves CRI of greater than 90; efficacy is 30 percent higher than other mass market LEDs; and an innovative temperature compensation feature overcomes color point shift issues.

Flint Mobile Launches Mobile App for Next Wave of Easy Credit Card Processing; Raises Series A Funding
Enables on-the-go merchants to seamlessly accept credit cards with no extra hardware and to find new customers through social marketing
SAN FRANCISCO, May 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- At the Finovate conference today, Flint Mobile, Inc. (http://www.flintmo.com), announced the Beta launch of its first offering, a next-generation mobile payments app for small businesses on-the-go, as well as the close of its Series A funding. Flint Co-founder and CEO Greg Goldfarb will introduce the application as part of Finovate's Demo Session #5 starting at 9:00 am Wednesday local time. Led by Storm Ventures and True Ventures, the $3 million financing will enable Flint to accelerate product development, hiring, and customer acquisition.
Flint's first product is a free iPhone(TM) app that enables merchants to easily and securely process credit card payments using only their phone. Unlike existing solutions that require a separate card reader, Flint uses the phone's camera to process payments without the use of any additional hardware. The company's proprietary platform provides merchants with unmatched ease of use along with high levels of consumer privacy protection and fraud prevention to help keep processing fees in check. The app also integrates customizable receipts with built-in social marketing tools that enable merchants to better engage with their customers and to tap into online word-of-mouth referrals.
"Flint's goal is to transform the everyday commerce capabilities of tens of millions of small services businesses and sole proprietors who are highly mobile," said Greg Goldfarb, Co-founder and CEO of Flint Mobile. "Our first product takes the hassle out of on-the-go credit card processing and provides an easy on-ramp to capitalize on social marketing. Essentially, we are starting to turn credit card transaction fees into an investment in online customer engagement."
The U.S. has seen a 70% increase in the number of independent agents in the workforce since 2008*, indicating a shift towards more sole proprietorships that have much different needs from retail operations. These on-the-go business owners insist on simplicity and want a way to accept credit cards without worrying about extra hardware or accessories. Moreover, the number one issue keeping them up at night is how to find new customers.** Flint addresses both these problems by taking the card reader out of the equation and by linking everyday transactions to social media channels to drive word-of-mouth referrals.
Flint Features and Benefits
-- Ease of use: no extra hardware required; simply scan the main card
number using your phone's camera and enter card verification info; no
data or image is saved on the phone.
-- Social marketing: integrated tools that empower and engage customers to
easily post reviews and recommendations to popular social media channels
such as Facebook; generate more repeat business via customized loyalty
offers in every receipt.
-- Low transaction fees: 1.95% + $0.20 per transaction for debit cards and
2.95% + $0.20 per transaction for credit cards. Flint is among the first
in the mobile category to offer lower debit card fees.
-- Frictionless Setup: no merchant account headaches or upfront costs and
no waiting to get a card reader.
-- Safety and security: data is protected according to industry PCI DSS
guidelines, and Flint has developed patent pending methods to protect
consumer privacy.
"Flint will be a game changer in the world of mobile payments for small businesses," said Alex Mendez, Founding Managing Director of Storm Ventures. "They have created a simple approach that couples payments and social marketing to provide a huge leap forward for the mobile small businesses that form the backbone of our economy. The Flint team consists of seasoned executives who have created market-leading products, and we're very excited to be teaming up with them."
Small business owners and merchants interested in more information or in requesting an invitation to the Beta program should sign up at http://www.flintmo.com. Flint also will be offering an integration program for a select set of distribution partners. AUO's theme for the show this year is "Boundless Views, Lively Up Close", as illustrated by more advanced 3D functions, super narrow bezels, and next-generation technology integrations to deliver the ultimate viewing experience for consumers. The exhibition highlights include 50" Super Narrow Bezel 3D TV display, Pattern Retarder 3D TV displays featuring the all-new 39" and 50" in size, and 4K by 2K Ultra-High Resolution TV display. In terms of public information displays, AUO will demonstrate a 138" LED display wall assembled with AUO's 46" Super Narrow Bezel LED panels, boasting the world's narrowest bezel-to-bezel distance((*)). The 65" Photo-Sensor In-cell Touch E-board and 50" FHD Transparent display with application on vending machine will also be on display. In addition, qHD Ultra-High Resolution AMOLED, Transparent AMOLED, and One-Glass-Solution (OGS) touch panels are being demonstrated to provide customers with the widest choices of high value-added display applications.
Super Narrow Bezel 3D TV Display to Enjoy"Boundless Views, Lively Up Close"
To offer the best 3D viewing experience possible, AUO continues to develop new product lines and will exhibit the all-new 50" FHD 3D TV display. The display applies the pattern retarder technology which simply requires the audience to put on a pair of lightweight pattern retarder glasses to enjoy 3D images of high quality and brightness. With super narrow bezel of 5mm on the side, viewers are presented with almost boundless 3D images that are spectacular and vivid to the eyes. As demands for interactive 3D media flourish, a play zone featuring mega-screen car racing game will also be at the show. Super narrow bezel 3D TV panels will be jointed to form an ultra-large display for gamers to indulge themselves in seemingly bezel-free 3D surroundings, making it the best choice for audio visual entertainment.
4K by 2K Ultra-High Resolution TV Display Makes Its Debut
In terms of ultra-high resolution display technology, AUO will exhibit for the first time 4K by 2K Ultra-High Resolution TV Display, featuring the 4K by 2K (or "quad-HD") resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 and a high contrast ratio of 5000:1 to offer the most detailed and delicate images possible.
Public Information Displays Showing a Variety of Value-added Applications
With innovation being the core value, AUO achieves full potential of its technological resources to develop all types of high value-added public information display applications. An example includes the 138" High Resolution Video Wall, which is assembled by nine 46" high resolution super narrow bezel panels. Their bezel-to-bezel distance of 5mm is currently the world's narrowest((*)). The video wall's full HD image quality and lightweight LED backlight design are extremely fit for use at shopping malls, airports, stations, etc.
Another highlight of the show includes the 50" FHD Transparent display applied on a vending machine, whose features include high transparency and high color saturation. The transparency could be adjusted depending on the kind of products on display, making the images all the more clear, vivid and colorful for the eyes. The display could be applied also on buildings, car windows, home appliances, and shop windows. It is one of the finest examples of innovative display technology leading the trend for showcase display.
For the educational and training sector, new applications have also been developed by AUO. The 65" Photo-Sensor In-cell Touch E-board has its photo sensor made directly on the TFT array. The in-cell touch design supports red, blue and green multi-touch optical pens to identify different users. It also comes with an electronic eraser, making it a very user-friendly E-board. In the future, teaching will be presented by multi-media that are even more lively and interesting. Learning will be full of fun.
AMOLED with High Brightness and Extreme Slim Design
AUO is dedicated continuously to the enhancement of its technologies. The effort is also demonstrated in its light, slim, power-saving, and extremely bright OLED applications. Touch functions and transparent features are also incorporated to develop the next-generation AMOLED displays. An exhibit includes the slim and light 4.3" qHD high resolution AMOLED display with 257 PPI, low power consumption and real colors. It has managed to resolve the saw-like edges found in the images of AMOLED displays in prior times. The 6" Transparent AMOLED with a transparency of over 35% has a high light transmission that is especially ideal for smartphones and car displays.

There is a huge demand for high performance and highly scalable LTE solutions. The joint offering addresses this deep need for solutions that can cater to the dynamic markets quickly and efficiently.
"For equipment manufacturers, delivering compelling radio access solutions is a key component of their overall LTE strategy," explains Rakesh Vij, Aricent Group vice president of business development. "We are thrilled to partner with Mindspeed to deliver our proven, high-performance integrated LTE eNodeB framework that helps equipment manufacturers to accelerate the deployment of LTE base stations in the fast growing 4G market."
"Small cells are essential for LTE and operators need to quickly and reliably develop a mix of form factor base stations to support it. Mindspeed is the only company with the field-proven technology and real-world expertise experience to make this possible," said Dr. Naser Adas, vice president and general manager, wireless and customer premises equipment (CPE), at Mindspeed. "With over one million small cells deployed in HSPA+, we have extensive experience in small cell technology, and we are making it work in the field. We are the only system-on-chip (SoC) company with both 3G and 4G technology available today, and the only company with both LTE FDD and TD-LTE small cell solutions. Our collaboration with Aricent will allow us to deliver a complete, robust, carrier-class system implementation, with proven interoperability and full conformance."
Technical specifications
The Aricent-Mindspeed eNodeB reference framework includes LTE Layer 2 and Layer 3 software from Aricent, which is optimized on the Mindspeed Transcede T4x00, T3x00 and T2x00 SoC family and integrated with Layer 1 software. The reference framework supports both Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) and Time Division Duplex (TDD) modes of operation and a variety of carrier frequencies. It also supports LTE advanced features like 2x2 DL MIMO, etc and has an upgrade path to LTE-A and Release 10. The integrated framework has been comprehensively tested for interoperability with both test UEs (Signalion and Aeroflex) and with commercial terminals, ensuring ready-to-build platform for TEMs. It has also passed interoperability testing with commercial packet cores.
The Aricent-Mindspeed eNBF reference framework will be on display at the CTIA. Onsite engineers will showcase the performance of Aricent's Layer 2 and Layer 3 software on Mindspeed's hardware.

Kaiser Permanente adds iPhone app to its suite of mobile offerings
Can your iPhone help you live longer? Maybe. Can it help you live healthier? Definitely.
OAKLAND, Calif., May 8, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Kaiser Permanente announced today the launch of its iOS health management app, available free of charge in the Apple iTunes store.
The app offers members access to all of the same time-saving and convenient tools they can use through My Health Manager on kp.org. Members can email their providers, check lab test results, order prescription refills, and manage appointments -- all from their Apple handheld devices, where and when they choose.
Patients like Melissa Marote, 40, of Canoga Park, Calif. are finding it easier to manage their health online with Kaiser Permanente's mobile device apps and mobile-optimized website, kp.org. A busy mom of two small girls: Amelia, age 2, and Scarlett, 3 months, Melissa tries to make every minute count.
"I have to take advantage of every moment in my day to maintain a balanced life," said Marote. "The kp.org mobile app helps me to multi-task, taking care of my family while I am nursing, waiting in line or running errands, so I can spend more time doing the things I love, like playing with my kids, spending time with my husband, and writing notes to my friends and family."
This year, Kaiser Permanente made the largest electronic health record system in the world accessible by smartphone with the launch of its mobile-optimized website, m.kp.org, as well as an app for Android phones. Nearly 9 million Kaiser Permanente members now have 24/7 access to their medical information anywhere in the world from their mobile devices.
The app on the Android platform already has more than 95,000 downloads. There have also been more than 4.8 million visits to the mobile-optimized kp.org since its launch in late January, accounting for more than 15 percent of total visits to kp.org in the month of April.
"Accessing health information and care from mobile devices is quickly becoming a new norm for care. We are probably the most electronically connected health care delivery system in the country, and we are using that connectivity and database to give our patients and members the connectivity they clearly want," said George Halvorson, chairman and chief executive officer of Kaiser Permanente. "We are constantly looking for ways to take connectivity to new levels. The mobile health toolkit gives us great opportunities to satisfy that demand."
Providers also believe that the mobile apps can make care and information more accessible to their patients, improving their overall health care experience. "The mobile capabilities we offer allow members to securely access their health information when and where it's convenient for them," said Mark Groshek, MD, a Kaiser Permanente pediatrician in Colorado. "My patients or their parents can send me a message, refill a prescription, or check test results right from the palm of their hand. It's really all about making it easy for our members to play an active role in their health care."
Allowing members access to their health information and providers is more than just convenient --it also can improve health outcomes. According to Kaiser Permanente research, secure patient-physician email messaging improves the effectiveness of care for patients with diabetes and hypertension. The study, published in Health Affairs in 2010, showed that health information technology improves quality of care scores. The study observed 35,423 Kaiser Permanente patients in Southern California who had diabetes, hypertension, or both. It found that use of secure patient-physician messaging in any two-month period was associated with statistically significant improvements in Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) care measurements. Results included 2 percent to 6.5 percent improvements in glycemic, cholesterol, and blood pressure screening and control.
"I have a heart condition and have to get my Coumadin checked regularly," said Kaiser Permanente patient Richard Miller, 76, of Vallejo, Calif. "I get an alert that I have new test results, and they email me if I need to change my dosage. I also go to the encyclopedia to tell me what my lab results mean, and I can make and change appointments."
Kaiser Permanente launched its first mobile application, KP Locator, in July 2011. The facility locator app is now integrated into the new iOS app launched today, making the various functionalities even more convenient to access for users. The locator function has a simple and intuitive interface; users can input a city name or ZIP code to find Kaiser Permanente facilities in their area. Since its launch, the facility-finder app has been used 1 million times.
These increased mobile health capabilities are a natural extension of Kaiser Permanente's leadership in health IT. Kaiser Permanente HealthConnect® is Kaiser Permanente's comprehensive health information system, which includes one of the largest, most advanced electronic health records available in the United States. The member tool My Health Manager securely connects 8.9 million people to their health care teams, their personal information, and the latest medical knowledge, leveraging the integrated approaches to health care available only at Kaiser Permanente. In 2011, more than 68 million lab test results were made available online and members made more than 12 million e-visits. These numbers are expected to increase significantly as more people have access to their doctors and their health information at the touch of a button.
"The new mobile-optimized site is set up very well. It's easy to use, the functionality is improved. I'm very happy with it," said Miller. "I have a pretty basic phone. I think people would be amazed to see what I can do on it."
Kaiser Permanente is committed to helping shape the future of health care. We are recognized as one of America's leading health care providers and not-for-profit health plans. Founded in 1945, our mission is to provide high-quality, affordable health care services and to improve the health of our members and the communities we serve. Verizon Wireless is Bringing the Power of Its 4G LTE Network to More Virginia Towns on May 17, 2012
Fredericksburg, Harrisonburg, Staunton, Waynesboro and Martinsville Among 230 Nationwide Markets to be Covered
LAUREL, Md., May 8, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon Wireless announced today that it is bringing the nation's largest 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network to several more Virginia communities on May 17, 2012. Customers in and around Fredericksburg, Harrisonburg, Staunton, Waynesboro, and Martinsville will soon be able to use 4G LTE wireless devices to access the Internet faster; listen to music or watch video on their phones; use thousands of apps; and stay in touch with family and friends, all with speeds up to 10 times faster than before. 4G LTE from Verizon Wireless is currently available in many other locations throughout Virginia, including Richmond, Roanoke, Blacksburg, Greater Hampton Roads, and Northern Virginia.
This latest expansion of its 4G LTE network is part of Verizon Wireless' aggressive nationwide network investment strategy. Nationally, Verizon Wireless has invested more than $70 billion since it was formed in 2000 to increase the coverage and capacity of its premier nationwide networks and to add new services for customers. Last year alone in the Virginia, Washington, DC, and Maryland region, Verizon Wireless invested $354 million in wireless network enhancements, including 4G LTE expansions and new market launches like these coming online May 17.
"The future is here, and it is Verizon Wireless 4G LTE," said Mike Maiorana, regional president for Verizon Wireless in Maryland, Washington, DC and Virginia. "Our commitment to 4G LTE is bringing customers a new level of wireless data service with upload and download speeds and connectivity that is revolutionizing the way we communicate."
4G LTE Devices and Plans
Verizon Wireless customers can choose from a variety of more than 20, 4G LTE-enabled devices, including notebooks and netbooks; hotspots and modems; and smartphones and tablets, including the new LG Lucid(TM), an easy-to-use smartphone offering 4G LTE speeds at a low price, and the soon to be launched DROID Incredible 4G LTE by HTC, which will allow users to shoot HD video and capture photos at the same time with its Video Pic feature, all over the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network.
The company also recently introduced HomeFusion(SM) Broadband, a solution that leverages the power and speed of the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network to deliver high-speed, in-home Internet access for residential broadband, particularly in areas where Internet options are limited or are not currently available. HomeFusion Broadband uses a professionally installed, cylinder-shaped antenna attached to a customer's home. The antenna's innovative design includes multiple internal antennae, allowing the device to pick up the best Verizon 4G LTE signal available and transmit it to a broadband router inside the home. The router can connect up to four wired and at least 20 wireless devices inside the home using Wi-Fi. HomeFusion is available in Verizon Wireless Communications Stores in Roanoke, Fredericksburg, Martinsville, Staunton, Harrisonburg, Mechanicsville, Richmond, Glenn Allen, Williamsburg, and Massaponax, Virginia.
4G LTE Overview
Verizon Wireless introduced the globe's first large-scale LTE network on December 5, 2010, and currently offers service in 230 markets nationwide, and is on course to deliver 4G LTE to its entire 3G wireless footprint by the end of 2013. The company's 700 MHz spectrum gives Verizon Wireless specific advantages with 4G, including a contiguous, nationwide network license. In real-world, fully-loaded network environments, 4G LTE users should experience average data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink. When customers travel outside a 4G coverage area, their devices automatically connect to Verizon Wireless' 3G network, enabling customers to stay connected from coast to coast. The Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network was named "Fastest 4G Network Yet" by Popular Science's 2011 Best of What's New Awards, and was ranked No. 1 on PC World's 100 Best Products of 2011. - Leading states and vendors line up to back new ed-tech solution that can deliver comprehensive student information to every teacher across US -
AUSTIN, Texas, May 8, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Since launching in July 2011, the Ed-Fi Tool Suite, including the data standard and dashboards, has gained significant momentum in K-12 education among state education agencies, school districts and vendors. Eight states have licensed or are in discussions to license the Ed-Fi Tool Suite, and an additional four states will benefit from Ed-Fi-enabled tools through the Shared Learning Collaborative. This represents 34% of K-12 students and 36% of teachers across the United States.
Ed-Fi is the only free, flexible and complete ed-tech solution to empower educators with relevant, timely, student-centric information that enables better data collection and reporting to improve decision making, facilitate targeted action plans and drive higher student outcomes. The Ed-Fi data standard aligns with Common Education Data Standards (CEDS) and facilitates secure data exchange among disparate data systems in the K-12 education sector. The Ed-Fi data standard enables interoperability among education systems that states and districts have already implemented, and enables organizations to build on prior investments in existing IT systems and processes. Most importantly, it puts the transformative power of information in the hands of teachers and other educators when and where they need it most: their classrooms.
Arizona, Kansas and New Mexico join Colorado, Delaware, Louisiana, Tennessee and Texasin using Ed-Fi to power their ongoing efforts to ensure that educators have the information and insight they need to understand the individual needs of every student and be equipped to respond.
Vendors including e-Scholar, Curriculum Associates, SunGard and Wireless Generation have also licensed Ed-Fi. Further, the Shared Learning Collaborative (SLC) has chosen Ed-Fi to power its scalable shared technology services, which aim to accelerate progress toward personalized learning for every K-12 student in the United States. The SLC will help existing and future instructional technology investments in states, districts and schools work better together, and will extend the reach and potential of Ed-Fi to additional states including Illinois, Massachusetts, New York and North Carolina.
"At the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, we believe that the absence of a widely-adopted data standard is the fundamental element that has kept the education sector stuck in its old ways of doing business," said Lori Fey, Director, Policy Initiatives, US Education at the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation. "We believe that improvement and innovation in the education sector are within reach, and that states, districts and vendors that move aggressively to standardize their data and systems will unlock the potential of both."
Ed-Fi does not replace existing education data or information systems, nor does it supplant existing data standards; it enables them to work together to give educators nationwide what they need: holistic portraits of students that are detailed, easy to understand and up-to-date at any given moment. Moreover, Ed-Fi addresses a long-standing challenge to meaningful systemic improvement in schools nationwide: The multiple and often non-interoperable information and education data systems used by schools, districts and states.
"Ed-Fi fills the persistent need in the education sector to harness the power of data already collected in school districts and states," said Fey.
STATE EDUCATION AGENCY QUOTES
"Joining Ed-Fi and uniting behind a common data standard is an important step forward for Arizona's education community to provide powerful student-level data to educators," said Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction John Huppenthal. "Arizona is undergoing transformative education reform, and improving the quality of education through sound data-driven decision making is a key part of that change. I applaud the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation for offering such a robust education technology solution, at no cost, to the Arizona Department of Education."
"Colorado has consolidated 19 primary data collections, and we now have eight. We were able to do this by taking a student-based approach to data as compared to the old way of approaching data based on programs. Ed-Fi wholly supports this enterprise view of data. By streamlining the flow of information and eliminating redundant data requests, Colorado can reduce the data administration burden for schools while shifting resources towards using data to enhance performance," said Robert Hammond, Commissioner of Education, Colorado.
"Use of the Ed-Fi standard allowed us to significantly accelerate the development life cycle for our Education Insight warehouse and dashboard projects, enabling us to move from analysis to production in just 12 months. Ed-Fi provided a compass that guided the transformation of data from a variety of disparate data sources into meaningful real-time metrics for classroom decision-making, while allowing us to customize the teacher dashboard to the specific needs of Delaware educators," said Reese Robinson, Education Insight Project Manager, Delaware Department of Education.
"In Kansas, we have been working over the past several years to help schools develop a system of tiered interventions designed to meet the unique needs of each student. The Ed-Fi framework and teacher dashboards are serving as a foundation to allow us to implement a Collaborative Workspace for teachers that will tie right into that effort," said Brad Neuenswander, Deputy Commissioner for Education in Kansas. "The Collaborative Workspace will provide teachers valuable information on individual student needs and learning styles, allowing them to start the school year or semester with the instructional strategies necessary to help each student succeed. It's very powerful when teachers can start from day one presenting information and creating an environment that will be most conducive to student achievement. We believe that by using the Ed-Fi solution, we can implement the Collaborative Workspace sooner and provide a more comprehensive solution for our teachers."
"Educators across Louisiana recognize the value of using data to drive student achievement. Thus, we've adopted a strategy to enrich the capacity of our data systems both within the agency and in support ofour districts, schools, teachers, students and families. The Ed-Fi dashboards play into that strategy by providing teachers and administrators with a daily snapshot of student, classroom and campus performance in a manner that is reliable, meaningful and easy to understand," said John White, Louisiana State Superintendent of Education.

About Ed-Fi
Ed-Fi is a universal educational data standard and tool suite that enables vital academic information on K-12 students to be consolidated from the different data systems of school districts throughout the United States. Ed-Fi acts as a universal translator of academic data, integrating and organizing information so that educators can start addressing the individual needs of each student from day one, and can measure progress and refine action plans throughout the school year.
Developed through funding from the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, Ed-Fi licenses provide school districts, state education agencies and vendors with unrestricted access to all Ed-Fi components free of charge. For more information, visit http://www.ed-fi.org. The Ed-Fi initiative supports the goal of ensuring that all children have access to quality education in public schools, one of the foundation's key objectives.
