NTSB Report Highlights Dangers of Distracted Driving, CMV Enforcement Flaws
ARLINGTON, Va., Dec. 14, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- American Trucking Associations President and CEO Bill Graves issued the following statement after the National Transportation Safety Board's report on a 2010 truck-involved crash in Gray Summit, Mo.:
"Every fatality on our highways is a tragedy, but never more so than when the crash could so easily have been avoided. The NTSB's investigation and report underscores the need for policymakers at the federal and state level to do more to prevent all drivers from texting while behind the wheel. ATA supported new regulations, made effective in October 2010, that prohibit commercial drivers from texting and urges lawmakers to enact similar bans for drivers of all vehicles. ATA encourages lawmakers to go a step further and prohibit passenger vehicle operators from driving while using a hand-held cell phone. ATA also supported the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's recent ban on hand-held cell phone use by truck drivers.
"The NTSB report also exposes some flaws in how federal regulators monitor the safety performance of commercial trucking fleets. Under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's safety monitoring and measurement system, CSA, this crash will be attributed to the involved trucking company's and driver's records and increase the carrier's likelihood of being selected for government intervention and scrutiny. This is the case even though there is little to nothing the professional driver could have done to avoid the tragic incident.

Universal Ad Unit Guidelines Created by Industry Leaders From Both Sales and Buy Sides
NEW YORK, Dec. 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The Mobile Marketing Association (MMA), the leading global trade association for the mobile industry, today releases the MMA Universal Mobile Ad Package v.2.0 for public comment. The mobile ad unit guidelines were created with participation from the seller and buyer sides of the industry, and make it easier to buy, sell, and create mobile ads for smartphones, feature phones and tablets.
"The guidelines issued today vastly simplify the mobile ad landscape, creating six standard ad unit sizes, out of the tangle of the more than 60 unit sizes currently in use in the marketplace," said MMA Global CEO Greg Stuart. "By standardizing around a limited and widely accepted set of ad sizes, mobile advertising becomes exponentially easier to add to the marketing mix for marketers everywhere."
Beginning today, the full marketplace will have the chance to review the new standards during a 30-day public comment period. After comments are incorporated, all ad networks and publishers will have until the end of 1Q 2012 to become fully compliant. At that time, the MMA will promote compliant companies by issuing MMA Universal Mobile Ad Package Compliance stamps for member use on web sites and marketing materials.
To create the Universal Mobile Ad Package v.2.0, the MMA, with support from ImServices Group, analyzed hundreds of billions of mobile ad impressions delivered across the global mobile advertising marketplace in 2Q 2011. The data - sorted by smart phone and feature phone, networks and publishers, and including mobile web and app - helped determine the six unit sizes which have been agreed to as the standard Mobile Universal Ad Package v.2.0. The final standards mark a true collaboration between the sales side - including networks, rich media vendors and publishers - and the buy side at global ad agencies.

CA/Browser Forum Approves Baseline Requirements for SSL/TLS Certificates
First industry-wide standard for the issuance and management of SSL/TLS digital certificates
DALLAS, Dec. 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ --The CA/Browser Forum has released the "Baseline Requirements for the Issuance and Management of Publicly-Trusted Certificates," the first international baseline standard for the operation of Certification Authorities (CAs) issuing SSL/TLS digital certificates natively trusted in browser software.
SSL/TLS digital certificates are used to authenticate the ownership of websites and other online resources, as well as to encrypt information for privacy as it crosses the Internet and other networks.
"SSL/TLS certificates are a critical part of the Internet's security infrastructure, combining proven technical standards with the capability to scale to handle millions of websites and the wide array of user software," said Tim Moses, Chairman of the CA/Browser Forum. "The new Baseline Requirements will improve the reliability and accountability of SSL/TLS issuance for relying parties by establishing baseline standards for all types of SSL/TLS certificates from all publicly-trusted CAs."
The Baseline Requirements draw upon best practices from across the SSL/TLS sector to provide clear standards for CAs on important subjects including verification of identity, certificate content and profiles, CA security, revocation mechanisms, use of algorithms and key sizes, audit requirements, liability, privacy and confidentiality, and delegation (including external sub-CAs and registration authorities).
The Baseline Requirements become effective on July 1, 2012 allowing CAs time to bring their SSL/TLS policies and practices into compliance with the standard. The CA/B Forum intends to continue development of the Baseline Requirements to address the evolving risks and threats involving the issuance or use of SSL/TLS certificates.
The CA/Browser Forum was formed in 2006 and previously created the "Extended Validation" (EV) standard for SSL/TLS. EV was designed for banks and other high profile websites providing enhanced confirmation of the legitimacy of a website and the identity of its owner, consistent across all EV-issuing CAs.
"With the Baseline Requirements, for the first time we will have a consistent international standard for the issuance of all SSL/TLS, including the many variations of Domain Validation and Organisation Validation," said Eddy Nigg of the StartCom CA. Certification Authority members of the CA/Browser Forum range from the large multinational CAs to smaller issuers focused on geographic regions or specific industries. Major CAs have already voiced their commitment to implement the Baseline Requirements targeting the 2012 effective date. These include CA/Browser Forum members Symantec, Go Daddy, Comodo, GlobalSign, DigiCert, Entrust, StartCom, TrustWave, QuoVadis, Certum, T?Systems, Izenpe, and BuyPass representing more than 94% of all valid public SSL/TLS according to the independent Netcraft survey.
The CA/Browser Forum has requested that internet browsers and operating systems adopt the Baseline Requirements among their conditions to distribute CA root certificates in their software.

Aviva First to Replace Industry Standard Pen and Paper Based on-Site Notetaking With Tablet Technology

Aviva Risk Management Solutions embarks on 'industry first' digitisation
programme with Formicary Collaboration Group and Float to bring new efficiencies to risk
management processes
Aviva Risk Management Solutions is piloting a new digitisation programme to streamline
its risk assessment processes. The SOLAR PlayBook project - which is the first of its kind
in the industry - will see Aviva's risk assessment team replace pen and paper assessment
processes with Blackberry PlayBooks pre-loaded with a bespoke risk assessment application.
Developed by Formicary Collaboration Group, a leading provider of real-time team
collaboration solutions, and Float, a digital ideas company, the programme aims to bring
new efficiencies to its risk assessment teams, improve reporting to underwriters and
reduce customer resolution times.
The SOLAR PlayBook App enables Aviva's 120 risk advisers, who make technical risk
assessments of commercial premises across the UK, to process this information on site.
This removes the need for the adviser to return to their desk before assessments can be
processed, leaving them free to move on to the next customer.
Aviva drew up the specification for a bespoke risk assessment digital application app
in recognition of the time-saving benefits that processing and submitting reports while on
site could bring. It was required to operate on Aviva's tablet of choice, the Blackberry
PlayBook; work off-line in commercial properties where online connectivity is not always
available; accommodate the entire assessment process end-to-end and allow images to be
embedded in the report. It also needed to be attractive to risk assessors accustomed to
using paper-based reporting methods and easy to use to encourage its adoption.
Aviva reviewed a number of solution providers before selecting Formicary Collaboration
Group and Float to provide the content processing and user interface elements of the app
respectively. Formicary and Float worked with Aviva's risk advisers to understand their
level of IT competency; how they conduct surveys and interact with customers; and identify
areas where improvements could be made.
The resulting app makes the process of recording survey data easy through a layout
that is intuitive to navigate and complete. Forms consisting of text entry, selectable
options and sliders are used to enter the core data. There are additional options to make
free-form notes and take photos that can be embedded in the final report to underwriters.

SACRAMENTO, Calif., Dec. 13, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Joined by students, educators, The Twenty Million Minds Foundation (20MM), and other supporters, California Senate President pro Tempore Darrell Steinberg announced proposed legislation to establish a 21st century project that could save California college students hundreds of millions of dollars a year in higher education costs.
At a time when higher education affordability is at the forefront of national debate, this legislation would create Open Educational Resources (OER) in California that give undergraduate students free access to textbooks for 50 lower-division courses. These books would be available via computers and mobile devices through a digital open source library, with a print version offered for around $20.
"There's a clarion call from students and middle class families to make higher education more accessible and affordable," said Steinberg. "Open source digital textbooks can bring real relief of nearly $1,000 a year to each college student."
Dr. Barbara Illowsky of De Anza College has already authored one such textbook "Collaborative Statistics," this interactive open digital textbook is provided free to students today on Kno.com.
"Choosing to adopt the open digital textbook for my students spares them thousands of dollars in textbook expenses," said Dr. Larry Green, Lake Tahoe Community College professor using CollaborativeStatistics, "and the book's academic quality is comparable, if not better, than the pricey versions offered by publishers."
Steinberg's legislation would create a competitive "Request for Proposals" (RFP) process challenging others to develop high quality digital open source textbooks and related courseware. All would be placed under a "Creative Commons" license that allows for free access and faculty customization. To ensure materials meet the rigorous standards of college curricula, they would be reviewed and approved by subject matter experts.
OER has been supported by educational foundations for nearly a decade now, and 20MM has been instrumental in promoting innovative strategies to lower book costs for college students. Mass production will begin in Q2, 2012.
As a result of increased pricing pressure, LCD panel and television manufacturers need to be able to develop improved products without extra cost and complexity. K-micro's VFRC-A1 allows them to offer superior motion picture performance by reducing motion artifacts such as blur and judder at significantly lower cost than before. K-micro reduced the cost of this new generation controllers by 50%.
Top tier customers, including Funai Electric Co., Ltd, a leading company in high quality and reasonably priced LCD TVs, are sampling VFRC-A1 products.
