Building on Company's 3D Synching Technology, GoPro Array Defines New Level of Camera Versatility
HALF MOON BAY, Calif., Oct. 10, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- GoPro, the world's leading activity image capture company, today released a new video for international surf brand, Rip Curl, that uses the first ever mobile, waterproof 48 camera array to capture never-before-seen perspectives of two time world champion surfer, Mick Fanning, doing what he does best in the warm waters of the South Pacific. The video highlights the capabilities of the GoPro Camera Array that was used for Rip Curl's upcoming marketing campaign for its Mirage Boardshort and was shot in conjunction with the pioneers of camera array photography, Tim and Callum Macmillan. Additional videos for the Rip Curl campaign featuring this new GoPro Array technology will showcase Rip Curl surfers Owen Wright, Matt Wilkinson, Dillon Perillo and Dean Brady.
"At GoPro we're always looking for new ways to use our cameras, new ways to leverage them to do something that's never been done before in digital imaging. As an example, GoPro is the first consumer camera company to enable people to combine multiple like-cameras together to form a new type of camera. We first did it with our 3D HERO System which allows you to combine two GoPro cameras together to form a 3D camera, and now we're experimenting with combining 48 cameras into a unique multi-camera array that enables entirely new forms of content capture. The results are stunning and it's another great example of how the HD HERO truly is the world's most versatile HD camera," said Nicholas Woodman founder and CEO of GoPro.
Beyond the Third Dimension - The GoPro Array
Since the original inception of GoPro's 35mm film HERO Camera, a wrist camera for surfing, GoPro has been changing the way people use a camera during their favorite activities. GoPro created a new category of image capture with its professional quality micro HD cameras and myriad of mounting accessories that make it easy to mount the cameras to anyone or anything imaginable. GoPro's now famous image quality coupled with this versatility has led it to become not only a best selling consumer camera but also the world's top selling small form factor HD camera for professional production. Other notable innovations include the 3D HERO System, an expansion kit for GoPro camera users that allows a filmmaker to connect two 1080p HD HERO cameras together with a synchronization cable to essentially genlock the cameras together for 3D video and photo capture. This same camera synchronization technology that is core to GoPro's 3D HERO System makes it possible to connect and combine a potentially unlimited number of GoPro cameras into a GoPro Array of cameras. The potential is limited only by the imagination and the number of HD HERO cameras on hand.
After GoPro's much anticipated release of its 3D system in April, GoPro teamed up with two experts in the field of camera array systems and began experimenting and pushing the limits of its 3D HERO syncing technology. Tim and Callum Macmillan, endearingly known as The Brothers Slice, were challenged with creating a handheld underwater camera array system for the launch of Rip Curl's upcoming "Mirage" boardshort campaign.
"We are always looking to lead the way when it comes to camera array effects and identifying new ways to push the limits for creativity and to acquire unique shots," said Tim Macmillan of Time-Slice Films. "We've been waiting for the ideal camera technology to come along to do the video array. It's like waiting for a wave. You see the wave coming, you start paddling before everyone else and then it hits you and it is GoPro."
The result was an astonishingly innovative development - the GoPro Array. The world's first video array, which could be submerged underwater, operated by one man, and withstand the enormous waves at Cloudbreak, Fiji.
"The results and footage compiled from this campaign shoot is unlike anything anyone in surfing has ever seen before," declares James Taylor, Rip Curl's Global Creative Director. "We had the best surfers in the world surfing one of the best waves in the world in the ultimate performance boardshort and all captured by the most versatile water cameras in the business. It was an unbelievable experience!"
"No other camera could have enabled this shoot," continues Tim Macmillan. "What makes the GoPro Array revolutionary is shooting actual video, not still pictures arranged sequentially. Multiple cameras shooting 720p at 60 frames per second all synched together opens up a multitude of possibilities."
GoPro is fast becoming a standard in professional content production, with technologies ranging from it's well known cameras and mounting accessories to its GoPro Cineform codec, an industry standard intermediary codec widely regarded as the best codec for streamlining post production workflows. Increasingly, GoPro is enabling many of the production industry's most innovative content creators.

GreenPrint's New Product Aims to Revolutionize the Printing Industry by Moving Billions of Pages from Bad Printers to Good
GreenPrint's new Advisor software can substantially increase profits for large industry players while reducing users' print costs
PORTLAND, Ore., Oct. 10, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- GreenPrint Technologies today launched a public beta version of GreenPrint Advisor, software that helps users redirect print jobs from costly or inefficient printers to more cost-effective ones.
GreenPrint Advisor categorizes all printers in a corporate environment as either "red," "yellow," or "green" based on the printer's cost and efficiency attributes. When a user prints to a "red" or "yellow" printer, and a "green" printer is available, Advisor pops up with a message highlighting the undesirability of the selected printer and the savings possible if the job is transferred to a "green" printer. With a single click, the user can move the print job to the less expensive "green" printer, generating substantial savings for the customer and new revenue for the print providers in the process. In addition, the color coding can be generated automatically or custom-tailored by IT administrators, and further allows them to attach custom per-page costs to each printer.
"This is an evolutionary product that should have a huge impact on the MPS market," said Qualpath's President Kevin DeYoung, "The ability to redirect print jobs from bad printers to good ones is functionality every MPS provider has wanted for years. If implemented successfully it should substantially enhance MPS profit margins and lower customers' costs."
Advisor also has the ability to spot locally-connected printers not on the network and not easily detectable by administrators. In addition to recommending that users redirect print jobs away from these typically inefficient devices, it also highlights the printer's presence to network administrators. These costly, hard-to-detect printers can waste millions of dollars a year at a large company--a waste directly remedied by Advisor.
Advisor seamlessly integrates into GreenPrint's suite of print management software. The financial metrics are tracked and managed by GreenPrint Analytics, and GreenPrint's Preview+ is instantly available within Advisor to remove pages, images, or create a PDF. Advisor's color coding is also built into the new Preview+ printer pull-down menu, further ensuring that users print to the most cost-effective device available.

National Instruments Introduces New Vision and Motion Hardware With NI RIO Technology
NI LabVIEW FPGA-Powered Frame Grabber and Motion Drive Help Engineers Create Custom Inspection and Machine Control Solutions
AUSTIN, Texas, Oct. 10, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- National Instruments (Nasdaq: NATI) today introduced two new additions to its popular NI reconfigurable I/O (RIO) technology including a reconfigurable Camera Link frame grabber for demanding embedded vision applications and a motion module for the NI CompactRIO platform. The NI PCIe-1473R frame grabber is a PC-based embedded vision board that combines field-programmable gate array (FPGA) technology with a Camera Link interface to help engineers create high-performance embedded imaging and inspection applications. The NI 9502 brushless servo drive C Series module makes it possible for engineers to drive brushless servo motors, including six new custom NI motor options, directly from the reconfigurable CompactRIO system to address advanced motion control challenges.
The NI PCIe-1473R frame grabber is ideal for advanced inspection and imaging applications that require image preprocessing and high-speed control such as medical imaging, web and surface inspection and high-speed sorting. Engineers and scientists can program the new frame grabber's onboard FPGA with the NI LabVIEW FPGA Module for custom image processing and analysis in real time, with little to no CPU intervention. The frame grabber combines the onboard FPGA with a high-bandwidth 850 MB/s Camera Link bus, which supports a range of Camera Link configurations up to 10 taps and 80 bits. The NI PCIe-1473R also supports Power over Camera Link (PoCL) to directly power cameras with no additional cables or external power supply. With such features, the frame grabber is an off-the-shelf solution that makes it possible for engineers to create high-performance imaging applications without spending substantial time and money to develop a custom design.
With the addition of the NI 9502 motion drive module for CompactRIO, engineers can now power brushless, stepper or brushed servo motors directly with NI C Series modules to provide a compact, highly customizable solution for integrating motion into advanced control, monitoring and test systems. The NI 9502 offers 4 A continuous/8 A peak current and multiple commutation modes. To complement the module, NI is also releasing six three-phase brushless motors that are specifically designed for maximum performance and direct connectivity with the NI 9502. With these features and more, the NI 9502 helps engineers implement proprietary custom drive control algorithms at the FPGA level through LabVIEW FPGA, eliminating the need for custom firmware from a drive manufacturer.
"With its superior I/O and motion control capabilities, along with the flexibility and reliability of its onboard FPGA, the new NI CompactRIO system helped us to create a high-performance embedded monitoring and control system that matches our rigorous requirements," said Pascal Wattellier, automation products coordinator at Serimax, an international full-service welding solutions company. "The CompactRIO system was the only commercially available solution that we could use to integrate motion control, I/O measurements, and HMI functionality within one system."
An integral part of the NI graphical system design approach, NI RIO technology combines LabVIEW system design software with commercial off-the-shelf hardware to simplify development and shorten time to market when designing advanced control, monitoring and test systems. NI RIO hardware, which includes CompactRIO, NI Single-Board RIO, R Series boards and the PXI-based NI FlexRIO, features an architecture with powerful floating-point processors, reconfigurable FPGAs and modular I/O. All NI RIO hardware components are programmed with LabVIEW to give engineers the ability to rapidly create custom timing, signal processing and control for I/O without requiring expertise in low-level hardware description languages or board-level design.

Broadcom, Freescale and OmniVision Enable World's First Ethernet-Based 360-Degree Surround View Parking Assistance System
Collaboration results in lower cost, higher resolution solution - technology now accessible for broad range of automobiles
IRVINE, SANTA CLARA, Calif. and AUSTIN, Texas, Oct. 10, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ: BRCM), Freescale Semiconductor (NYSE: FSL), and OmniVision Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: OVTI), today announced a jointly developed 360-degree surround view parking assistance system - the world's first Ethernet-based parking assistance solution.
The collaboration, combining best-in-class semiconductor innovation and automotive electronics expertise, is an important step in the migration from a closed application to an open and scalable Ethernet-based driver assistance network in which several systems can easily access information. The cost advantages offered by Ethernet technology, combined with the high image resolution now available from affordable CMOS image sensors, dramatically expand the opportunity for OEMs to deploy 360-degree parking assistance camera systems across vehicle classes, bringing valuable assistance options to luxury and non-luxury markets alike.
The system is based on the Broadcom® BroadR-Reach® BCM89810 standalone physical layer transceiver (PHY), the Freescale Qorivva MPC5604E 32-bit microcontroller (MCU), and OmniVision's AEC-Q100 qualified OV10630 color high dynamic range (HDR) system-on-a-chip (SoC) CMOS image sensor.
The OV10630's unique color HDR SoC structure with fully processed YUV output format enables a streamlined camera module architecture. Using this approach, the video signal can be fed directly into the Freescale Qorivva MPC5604E MJPEG encoding pipeline without the need for any additional processing ICs for RAW image to YUV format conversion.
Key Facts:
-- Industry analysts project significant digital camera growth for advanced
driver assistance systems(1).
-- The Broadcom® BCM89810 BroadR-Reach PHY enables low-cost Ethernet
connectivity at 100Mbps over unshielded single twisted pair cable.
-- The new highly-integrated Freescale Qorivva MPC5604E 32-bit MCU, built
on Power Architecture® technology, manages video streaming and camera
control, reducing the required communication bandwidth to less than 100
Mbps. The MPC5604E MCU uses low-latency video compression together with
an intelligent bandwidth management for maximum quality. The MPC5604E
supports Ethernet AVB compliant IEEE 802.1AS Precision Time Protocol for
accurate synchronization of camera exposure.
-- The 1/2.7-inch OV10630 sensor combines megapixel resolution (including
720p HD video) with the industry's best color HDR and low-light
sensitivity. It is built on OmniVision's high-sensitivity
OmniPixel3-HS(TM) architecture, enabling best-in-class low-light
performance (3.5V/lux-sec) and detail-rich, HD-quality color video
capture. Ideally suited for wide field of view and multi-camera
applications, the OV10630 also incorporates special features and output
formats for automotive machine vision applications. Using a proprietary
new HDR concept and processing technology, the new automotive sensor
delivers excellent scene reproduction in the most demanding lighting
environments. Employing auto dynamic range control to rapidly adjust to
changing conditions, the OV10630 is capable of producing a clear,
detailed and low-noise color image across a wide range of circumstances
that drivers may encounter.

Cellphone-Mate®, Inc. Announces FCC Approved Dual Band 80dB in-building Amplifier, the SureCall® CM2020
Introduction coincides with the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA), Enterprise and Applications event, October 10-13, 2011, in San Diego, CA
FREMONT, Calif., Oct. 10, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Cellphone-Mate (http://www.Cellphone-Mate.com) a leading provider of cell phone amplifiers and accessories, today announced that it is introducing its 80dB dual-band cellular signal amplifier, the SureCall CM2020 80dB in-building amplifier , designed for in-building use for Enterprise or Commercial locations requiring improved cellular reception up to 80,000 square feet. This announcement coincides with the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA) Enterprise and Applications event, emphasizing the expanded need for mobile cellular technology in businesses, occurring in San Diego from October 10-13, 2011. The CM2020 80dB is currently in stock for ordering and shipping and can be seen at Cellphone-Mate's booth, #1119, at the upcoming CTIA event.
"With the introduction of the dual band 80dB cellular amplifier, we believe we've hit the trifecta for our customers: powerful cellular amplification, high quality design and cost-effective pricing for system integrators and installers," states Cellphone-Mate's president, Hongtao Zhan. "We stress enterprise-grade quality in our amplifiers, yet our design and production allow us to price this high decibel amplifier at less than half of comparable models."
With their CM2020 line of enterprise class amplifiers, Cellphone-Mate combines a linear design with compartmentalized architecture of the power amplifiers within the unit. Linear design and compartmentalized architecture work together to create a more effective cellular amplifier. Linear amplifiers help allow for more cell phone calls to be made or answered simultaneously without interference with each other. With non-linear amplifiers, even two cellular phone calls can drastically reduce the decibel level of the amplifier, severely limiting the ability for simultaneous cellular calls to be made.
The significance of a dual-band 80 decibel amplifier is that it provides the maximum signal available while providing a clear cellular signal to a much larger area or overcomes a much weaker outside signal. A distributed antenna system like the CM2020 80dB amplifier with indoor and outdoor antennas provides a communication solution for businesses that require consistent cellular coverage in a location that might have uneven cellular reception.
Other important features of the CM2020 80dB are its ability to work with all 2G and 3G standards, dual band capabilities for 800 and 1900 megahertz, independently adjustable uplinks and downlinks to optimize call clarity and data rate and automatic shutdown to prevent interference to cellular towers.
Like all its products, the CM2020 80dB amplifier will be covered by Cellphone-Mate's industry exclusive two-year manufacturer's warranty. All Cellphone-Mate products are available from its network of authorized resellers and distributors.
About Cellphone-Mate Incorporated
Cellphone-Mate Inc. - the innovation leader in cellular amplifier technology - specializes in design and manufacturing of cell phone signal amplifiers and accessories. These amplifier systems provide coverage where there is none, and dramatically improve cell phone communications for businesses, homes and mobile settings in general. The SureCall flagship product line of FCC-approved amplifiers boosts the range and reception of almost any cellular call and/or data. Founded in 2001 and based in the Silicon Valley, Cellphone-Mate is an industry leader with multiple patents pending on their superior signal amplifier technology. The company continues to develop innovative new products that address the changing needs of all types of cellular and mobile broadband users. To help get more low-income households online, CenturyLink is offering discounted High-Speed Internet service starting at $9.95 a month, plus applicable taxes and fees, to eligible consumers in the 37 states where it has local operations. The service provides access up to 1.5 Mbps downstream capability. Higher bandwidth services, where available, are offered at a comparable discount.
CenturyLink also is offering program participants an Internet-ready netbook computer for $150, plus taxes, shipping and handling. The new equipment includes access to CenturyLink@Ease(TM), a comprehensive suite of backup, security and support services.
"While the Internet has become part of daily life for most Americans, many still aren't connected because the cost is beyond their reach. CenturyLink is pleased to introduce this new program that offers affordable High-Speed Internet service and computers to those who need help getting online," said CenturyLink CEO and President Glen F. Post, III.
In addition, CenturyLink is arranging basic computer education and technology training at no additional cost to Internet Basics customers. The classes are being offered through community groups and senior centers, as well as schools, libraries, and other state and local institutions, in more than 100 markets throughout the country.
The first phase of the free computer learning program is starting this fall in Foley, Ala.; Dumas, Ark.; Eagle, Colo.; Tallahassee, Fla.; Phoenix; Galesburg, Ill.; Franklin, Ind.; Billings and Great Falls, Mont.; Las Vegas; Farmington, N.M.; Rockingham, N.C.; Lorain, Ohio; Columbia River Gorge, Ore.; Greenwood, S.C.; Seattle and Yakima, Wash.; and Glenwood City, Wis. Other communities where the training is taking place will be announced in 2012.
"Technology training and education are essential for competing and succeeding in the world's expanding digital economy," Post said. "Through this program, CenturyLink is increasing the availability of Internet access, tools and resources for bringing new opportunities to families in our communities."
Participation in CenturyLink Internet Basics is determined by the criteria for the Lifeline Affordable Telephone Service, a federal program currently offered by CenturyLink that provides discounts on basic monthly telephone service to eligible low-income consumers.
According to a study on broadband adoption by the Federal Communications Commission, 60 percent of low-income households, which are defined as having annual incomes of less than $20,000, do not subscribe to High-Speed Internet service, compared to 35 percent of the entire U.S. population. Among those Americans who do not have broadband at home, 36 percent said it was because of the cost of the service and equipment, and 22 percent cited a "lack of digital literacy."

3LM, BoxTone Bring Enterprise-Ready Security to Android Mobile Devices
Strategic Alliance Makes Handsets Powered by Android Ready for Business by Delivering Industry's First and Only Enterprise Security and Management Solution across an Android-based Device's Complete Mobile Lifecycle
SAN DIEGO, Oct. 10, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- (CTIA ENTERPRISE & APPLICATIONS(TM) 2011 Booth #707) -- Android is enterprise-ready through a new strategic alliance between 3LM, a subsidiary of Motorola Mobility Holdings, Inc., and a provider of enterprise-grade security, management and remote access for Android-based mobile devices across Android handset manufacturers, and BoxTone, the leader in Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM). The alliance delivers the first full lifecycle embedded security and management platform for mobile devices and applications running on the Android operating system (OS).
According to a recent comScore Inc., Reports August 2011 U.S. Mobile Subscriber Market Share( )on the key trends in the U.S. mobile phone industry during the three month average period ending August 2011, Google Android OS-based devices continued to gain ground in the smartphone market reaching 43.7 percent market share. Explosive growth is driving an Android BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) phenomenon as workers seek to connect their personal Android smartphones and tablets to enterprise IT networks. This consumerization of IT is driving strong demand for enterprise-safe security and management to the Android platform - to eliminate enterprise concerns associated with potential Android open source vulnerabilities.
3LM has made handsets running the Android OS business-ready, giving IT enhanced protection and management of devices and applications through strategic alliances with major handset manufacturers, and through its enterprise server console that is available as part of a complete end-to-end mobile device management platform. By aligning 3LM's solution with BoxTone, enterprise IT can now secure, manage and achieve unprecedented levels of service and support for Android OS-enabled devices as they do with other operating systems - namely BlackBerry and iOS. By combining 3LM's solutions built-in at the device level and its powerful enterprise server console with BoxTone's industry standard end-to-end EMM platform - which delivers full lifecycle mobile management from device activation, provisioning, configuration and change tasks to mobile device management and support - Android OS-based devices and applications can enjoy enhanced security on the device and over the air (OTA).
"We initially built the 3LM solution to answer strong user demand to rapidly deploy and secure Android OS-based devices. By pairing our solution with BoxTone's EMM platform, enterprises can realize more than just security; they can manage the full mobile lifecycle from a single unified platform," said Tom Moss, co-founder and CEO, 3LM. "BoxTone brings the broad industry credentials, major installed base, multichannel distribution model and EMM platform for integrating the 3LM platform for full lifecycle enterprise mobility management for Android."
"At BoxTone, our goal is to fully mobilize the enterprise quickly, securely and reliably, and our strategic alliance with 3LM enables us to further extend our support for Android, as we have for all major device platforms," said Alan Snyder, CEO, BoxTone. "3LM's deep Android experience, licenses with major Android handset manufacturers, and platform-level security and management controls give BoxTone the ability to secure and manage Android OS-enabled devices and applications as we've done for BlackBerry and iOS devices for years. Now enterprises can say yes to consistent, safe and reliable security and management for any devices operating on the major mobile platforms."
The 3LM-BoxTone platform will be demonstrated at the CTIA ENTERPRISE & APPLICATIONS(TM) 2011, being held October 11-13, 2011 at the San Diego Convention Center at booth #707; San Diego, Calif., and at the Gartner Symposium ITxpo 2011 being held October 16-20, 2011, at Walt Disney World resorts at booth #507A; Orlando, Fla.

Comcast, Senator Tom Udall and APS Superintendent Winston Brooks Unveil Ambitious and Comprehensive Broadband Adoption Program for New Mexico
'Internet Essentials' to Provide Low-Cost Internet Service, Affordable Computers and Digital Literacy Training to Families with Children Eligible for a Free Lunch under the National School Lunch Program
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., Oct. 10, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Senator Tom Udall, Albuquerque Public Schools Superintendent Winston Brooks and Comcast Corporation Executive Vice President David L. Cohen today announced the New Mexico launch of Internet Essentials, a program from Comcast which provides families in New Mexico with children who are eligible to receive free lunches under the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) with low-cost Internet service, affordable computers and digital literacy training. The goal of Internet Essentials is to help close the digital divide and ensure more Americans benefit from all the Internet has to offer. The program addresses what research has identified as three primary barriers to broadband adoption- 1) a lack of understanding of how the Internet is relevant and useful; 2) the cost of a home computer; and 3) the cost of Internet service.
"For students in our school system, having Internet access both in their homes and at school will be a great step forward in their educational experience," said Brooks. "We need to connect with the educational potential that the Internet provides and use it as a tool not only to increase the interactivity of the learning environment, but also to train students of all ages and levels to come into the workforce or go to college prepared."
"High-Speed Internet access is no longer a luxury. Broadband is becoming a basic necessity--for workers looking for jobs, businesses seeking customers, students doing homework assignments and families trying to stay in touch with loved ones. I am pleased to see Comcast offer this new Internet Essentials initiative since it will help young students and their families. We have to work to make sure that broadband is available for all of New Mexico," said Udall.
According to David L. Cohen, "Internet Essentials helps level the playing field for low-income families by connecting students online with their teachers and their schools' educational resources. The program will enable parents to receive digital literacy training so they can do things like apply for jobs online or use the Internet to learn more about healthcare and government services available where they live."
Udall, Brooks and Cohen met today at the Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce to discuss the implications of the program, and what the additional access to information will mean for students and families in Albuquerque and in Comcast serviceable areas across New Mexico.
"Comcast's efforts to partner with the Albuquerque Public Schools to help bridge the digital divide for Albuquerque is extremely encouraging," said Brooks. "Now more than ever, access to online information and tools is essential for our students to grow and succeed in this digital age. We thank Comcast for making a difference in many students' lives."
Service Details:
Internet Essentials participants will receive:
-- Residential Internet service for $9.95 a month + applicable taxes;
-- No price increases, no activation fees, or equipment rental fees;
-- A voucher to purchase a low-cost computer for $149.99 + tax; and
-- Access to free digital literacy training in print, online and in person.
Additional benefits include the Norton(TM) Security Suite ($160 value) for comprehensive online security protection at no additional cost.
Eligibility:
A household is eligible to participate in the Internet Essentials program if it meets all of the following criteria:
-- Is located where Comcast offers Internet service;
-- Has at least one child who is eligible to receive a free school lunch
under the NSLP;
-- (As an example, according to the Department of Agriculture, a
household of three would have to make less than $25,000 a year in
income);
-- Has not subscribed to Comcast Internet service within the last 90 days;
-- Does not have an overdue Comcast bill or unreturned equipment.
Comcast will sign up eligible families in the program for at least three years, through the end of the 2013-2014 school year. Any household that qualifies during this three-year period will remain eligible for Internet Essentials provided a child eligible for a free lunch remains living in the household.

AT&T Completes More Than 1,200 Wireless Network Upgrades Year-to-Date in Michigan
New and upgraded cell sites, added capacity and enhanced backhaul designed to create most advanced mobile broadband experience
DETROIT, Oct. 10, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T* customers in Michigan are expected to experience improved mobile broadband coverage and voice performance as a result of continued investment by AT&T. The company announced today network improvements made to enhance the wireless capacity and performance of its local mobile broadband network.
Since the start of 2011, AT&T has made more than 1,200 wireless network upgrades in Michigan. Some of the enhancements include:
-- Deploying enhanced backhaul connections to more than 525 cell sites.
Combined with HSPA+ technology, these backhaul deployments enable 4G
speeds**.
-- Adding capacity or an extra layer of frequency - which is like adding
lanes to a highway - to more than 550 cell sites in the following areas:
-- Installing more than 20 new cell sites to improve network coverage.
-- Upgrading more than 100 existing cell sites to provide faster mobile
broadband speeds.
"More than ever before, customers look to wireless communications to stay in touch with family, friends and business colleagues," said Jim Murray, president, AT&T Michigan. "We're working to make this possible by investing in new wireless coverage in the area. In addition, our recently announced agreement to acquire T-Mobile USA represents a major commitment to strengthen and expand our network. If approved, this deal means that we'll be able to expand the next generation of mobile broadband - 4G LTE - from our current plan of 80 percent of the U.S. population to more than 97 percent.
"AT&T's investment in Michigan is great news," said House Speaker Jase Bolger (R-Marshall). "Infrastructure improvements like this make AT&T a great partner as we work to make Michigan a major competitor for economic development and job creation."
"Michigan is proud to welcome AT&T's investment and continuing commitment to the state," said Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville (R-Monroe). "The resources AT&T are making available for job makers and families, from faster speeds to expanded cell and broadband coverage are critical tools in our effort to attract, grow and strengthen new jobs across the state."
AT&T plans to support the build or upgrade of thousands of cell sites nationwide to increase network speed, coverage and reliability for both mobile voice and broadband services. AT&T also plans to install additional radio "carriers" at thousands of cell sites nationally this year, enabling new layers of spectrum capacity to carry larger volumes of mobile broadband traffic. Additional capacity helps support rising mobile data traffic volumes, which have increased more than 8,000 percent over the past four years.
"Our goal is to deliver a network experience that mobilizes everything for customers," said Brian Ducharme, vice president and general manager, AT&T Michigan and Indiana. "The ongoing investment we're making in Michigan is designed to increase coverage, reliability and to provide advanced services to our customers so they can do more with their wireless devices."
AT&T recently launched "Focus: Detroit," which provides visitors a peek into AT&T's wireless network enhancements made since the beginning of the year. Enhancements include new cell sites, broadband speed upgrades, capacity upgrades and network connection upgrades. The site also provides a map of area AT&T stores, a map of area Wi-Fi hotspots, useful tips, a localized Twitter handle and device reviews. You can visit the site at http://focus.att.com/Detroit.
For more information about AT&T's coverage anywhere in the United States, consumers can visit the AT&T Coverage Viewer. Using the online tool, AT&T customers can measure quality of coverage from a street address, intersection, ZIP code or even a landmark.
