ChipMOS SELLS INTEREST IN MODERN MIND AND ChipMOS SHANGHAI TO THAILIN

Since 2002, ChipMOS has managed its Mainland China operations, ChipMOS TECHNOLOGIES (Shanghai) LTD.("ChipMOS Shanghai"), through its controlled subsidiary, Modern Mind Technology Limited ("Modern Mind'). Modern Mind is a company incorporated under the laws of the British Virgin Islands and is wholly-owned by Jesper Limited ("Jesper"), a company incorporated under the laws of the British Virgin Islands. New Revelations of Google, Apple Smartphone Data Snooping Show Need for Do Not Track Me Legislation, Consumer Watchdog Says
SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 22, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- New details of how tech giants Google and Apple spy on users of their smartphones demonstrate the need for Do Not Track Me legislation that would cover mobile devices, Consumer Watchdog said today.
A Wall Street Journal article today revealed that Apple's iPhones and Google's Android smartphones regularly transmit their locations back to the respective companies. They also gather information on Wi-Fi networks near the smartphones and transmit that data to the companies' databases as well.
Earlier this week it was revealed that iPhones and iPads collect geolocation data and store it in an unencrypted file on the devices.
"These aren't smartphones; they are spy phones," said John M. Simpson, director of the nonpartisan, nonprofit public interest group's Privacy Project. "Consumers must have the right to control whether their data is gathered and how it is used."
The Federal Trade Commission's report, "Protecting Consumer Privacy in an Era of Rapid Change," proposed a Do Not Track mechanism last December. Since then Rep. Jackie Speier, D-CA, has introduced HR 654, the Do Not Track Me Online Act.
In California Sen. Alan Lowenthal, D-Long Beach, has introduced SB 761, a bill that would establish a Do Not Track mechanism for companies doing business in California.
A "Do Not Track" mechanism is a method that allows a consumer to send a clear, unambiguous message that one's online activities should not be tracked. Recipients of the message would be required to honor it.
"The mobile world is the wild west of the Internet where these tech giants seem to think anything goes," said Simpson. "Consumers need the same sort of strong privacy protections whether they go online via a wired device or a mobile device."

SANTA CLARA, Calif., April 22, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- In recognition of Earth Day, Rosendin Electric will be participating in the Smart Data Center Revolution, a showcase event organized by Vantage Data Centers to celebrate the company's new energy-efficient data center campus, which is the largest LEED® Platinum candidate data center project in the United States. Rosendin Electric, the nation's largest private electrical contractor and a 100% employee-owned company, has been working closely with Vantage Data Centers on the design/build of the electrical systems for this $300 million, 18-acre data center campus. The first 60,000+-square-foot building to be showcased at the event was completed at the start of 2011 after only five months of construction. The other two buildings are scheduled for completion later this year. Once completed, the campus will have 195,000 square feet of data center space.
As part of the electrical design/build, Rosendin Electric has incorporated a number of features to conserve energy and promote greater efficiency. The data centers include high-efficiency uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) to assure ongoing operation with minimal energy requirements. These units are 25 percent more energy efficient than most double-conversion UPS modules in widespread use in the industry. The building cooling systems are installed outside and use air-side economization, pumping cooler external air into the building; a real power saving since most data centers consume enormous amounts of energy to power air conditioning. High-efficiency lighting with automatic lighting controls is also used throughout the complex, so only those areas being occupied are lighted. All the lighting in the complex, both inside and out, is California Green compliant for lower power consumption as well as low light pollution, falling well below the Title 24 requirements set forth in the California Energy Efficiency Standards. Plus the campus has its own on-site electrical substation with a 37-megawatt IT load capacity.

Ninetowns Announces Acquisition of Land Use Rights in Dalian, China
BEIJING, April 22, 2011 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- Ninetowns Internet Technology Group Company Limited (NASDAQ: NINE) ("Ninetowns" or the "Company"), one of China's leading providers of online solutions for international trade, today announced that Dalian Aviation Changzheng Technology Development Co., Ltd. ("Dalian Changzheng"), a company invested by Beijing Ninetowns Ports Software and Technology Co., Ltd. ("Ninetowns Ports"), a subsidiary of the Company, won the winning bid in a land auction held on April 11, 2011 in Dalian, Liaoning Province, China and received the right to acquire land use rights for two pieces of undeveloped land located in Dalian High and New Technology Industry Park. Dalian Changzheng was originally established by Aviation Wanyuan Industry Co., Ltd. ("Aviation Wanyuan") on November 8, 2010. On February 24, 2011, Ninetowns Ports acquired 70% of the equity interest of Dalian Changzheng through a subscription of registered capital.
Dalian Changzheng entered into a land use right grant contract with the Dalian Land Resource Bureau on April 11, 2011. On April 11, 2011, Dalian Changzheng paid RMB280 million (US$43 million), representing the full land premium, to the Dalian Land Resource Bureau. Electric Powertrain Company ALTe Forms Joint Venture With Inmatech, Inc. to Produce Hybrid Electric Storage Devices
AUBURN HILLS, Mich., April 21, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- ALTe Powertrain Technologies, the Michigan developer of a Range Extended Electric Powertrain, has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to form a joint venture with Inmatech, Inc., a leading developer of advanced supercapacitors, to produce and sell hybrid electric storage (HES) devices composed of batteries, supercapacitors and control electronics. The blend of supercapacitors with lithium ion battery cells will enable longer life for the battery cells while reducing cost by as much as 40% for an equivalent size battery composed exclusively of lithium ion cells. LISLE, Ill., April 21, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Aumne, Inc. (Lisle, IL) today announced the general availability of Indigo Secure SMS to U.S. and international customers. Indigo SMS(TM) is a private and secure upgrade to standard text messaging applications. Business users, families, and individuals can now send even the most sensitive information via SMS without the fear of their text messages ending up in the wrong hands.
Indigo SMS application is installed on both the sender and recipient's phones. When a secure message is sent, Indigo SMS on the sender's phone scrambles the text and sends the message as a regular SMS. Indigo SMS on the recipient's phone decrypts and displays the message. Aumne uses no servers in the process and holds no private data; scrambled text is sent as a regular SMS using the customer's mobile carrier network. Carnegie Mellon Researchers Build Time Machine That Allows Visual Exploration of Space and Time
Time-lapse GigaPans Provide New Way To Access Big Data
PITTSBURGH, April 21, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University's Robotics Institute have leveraged the latest browser technology to create GigaPan Time Machine, a system that enables viewers to explore gigapixel-scale, high-resolution videos and image sequences by panning or zooming in and out of the images while simultaneously moving back and forth through time.
Viewers, for instance, can use the system to focus in on the details of a booth within a panorama of a carnival midway, but also reverse time to see how the booth was constructed. Or they can watch a group of plants sprout, grow and flower, shifting perspective to watch some plants move wildly as they grow while others get eaten by caterpillars. Or, they can view a computer simulation of the early universe, watching as gravity works across 600 million light-years to condense matter into filaments and finally into stars that can be seen by zooming in for a close up.
"With GigaPan Time Machine, you can simultaneously explore space and time at extremely high resolutions," said Illah Nourbakhsh, associate professor of robotics and head of the CREATE Lab. "Science has always been about narrowing your point of view -- selecting a particular experiment or observation that you think might provide insight. But this system enables what we call exhaustive science, capturing huge amounts of data that can then be explored in amazing ways."
The system is an extension of the GigaPan technology developed by the CREATE Lab and NASA, which can capture a mosaic of hundreds or thousands of digital pictures and stitch those frames into a panorama that be interactively explored via computer. To extend GigaPan into the time dimension, image mosaics are repeatedly captured at set intervals, and then stitched across both space and time to create a video in which each frame can be hundreds of millions, or even billions of pixels.
An enabling technology for time-lapse GigaPans is a feature of the HTML5 language that has been incorporated into such browsers as Google's Chrome and Apple's Safari. HTML5, the latest revision of the HyperText Markup Language (HTML) standard that is at the core of the Internet, makes browsers capable of presenting video content without use of plug-ins such as Adobe Flash or Quicktime.
Using HTML5, CREATE Lab computer scientists Randy Sargent, Chris Bartley and Paul Dille developed algorithms and software architecture that make it possible to shift seamlessly from one video portion to another as viewers zoom in and out of Time Machine imagery. To keep bandwidth manageable, the GigaPan site streams only those video fragments that pertain to the segment and/or time frame being viewed.
"We were crashing the browsers early on," Sargent recalled. "We're really pushing the browser technology to the limits."
Guidelines on how individuals can capture time-lapse images using GigaPan cameras are included on the site created for hosting the new imagery's large data files, http://timemachine.gigapan.org. Sargent explained the CREATE Lab is eager to work with people who want to capture Time Machine imagery with GigaPan, or use the visualization technology for other applications.
Once a Time Machine GigaPan has been created, viewers can annotate and save their explorations of it in the form of video "Time Warps."
Though the time-lapse mode is an extension of the original GigaPan concept, scientists already are applying the visualization techniques to other types of Big Data. Carnegie Mellon's Bruce and Astrid McWilliams Center for Cosmology, for instance, has used it to visualize a simulation of the early universe performed at the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center by Tiziana Di Matteo, associate professor of physics.
"Simulations are a huge bunch of numbers, ugly numbers," Di Matteo said. "Visualizing even a portion of a simulation requires a huge amount of computing itself." Visualization of these large data sets is crucial to the science, however. "Discoveries often come from just looking at it," she explained.
Rupert Croft, associate professor of physics, said cosmological simulations are so massive that only a segment can be visualized at a time using usual techniques. Yet whatever is happening within that segment is being affected by forces elsewhere in the simulation that cannot be readily accessed. By converting the entire simulation into a time-lapse GigaPan, however, Croft and his Ph.D. student, Yu Feng, were able to create an image that provided both the big picture of what was happening in the early universe and the ability to look in detail at any region of interest.
Using a conventional GigaPan camera, Janet Steven, an assistant professor of biology at Sweet Briar College in Virginia, has created time-lapse imagery of rapid-growing brassicas, known as Wisconsin Fast Plants. "This is such an incredible tool for plant biology," she said. "It gives you the advantage of observing individual plants, groups of plants and parts of plants, all at once."
Steven, who has received GigaPan training through the Fine Outreach for Science program, said time-lapse photography has long been used in biology, but the GigaPan technology makes it possible to observe a number of plants in detail without having separate cameras for each plant. Even as one plant is studied in detail, it's possible to also see what neighboring plants are doing and how that might affect the subject plant, she added.
Steven said creating time-lapse GigaPans of entire landscapes could be a powerful tool for studying seasonal change in plants and ecosystems, an area of increasing interest for understanding climate change. Time-lapse GigaPan imagery of biological experiments also could be an educational tool, allowing students to make independent observations and develop their own hypotheses.

Verizon Wireless Launches Six New 4G LTE Markets Today
BASKING RIDGE, N.J., April 21, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon Wireless announced that beginning today it is turning on the world's most advanced wireless network in six more metropolitan areas, as well as expanding the 4G LTE network in Charlotte, N.C. AT&T Building Most Advanced Mobile Broadband Experience in Greater Orlando, Announces 2011 Network Upgrade Plans
AT&T to Expand Backhaul in 2011 in Greater Orlando to Enable 4G Speeds, Increase Mobile Broadband Capacity, Upgrade Hundreds of Cell Sites
ORLANDO, Fla., April 21, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T*, building on its strong 2010 record of network accomplishments, today announced network improvement plans designed to enable 4G speeds** and enhanced reliability to Greater Orlando and surrounding communities in 2011. The wireless network enhancement plans are part of AT&T's planned $19-billion investment in its U.S. wireless and wireline networks and other capital projects in 2011.
Marshall Criser, state president, AT&T Florida, says AT&T plans the following network improvements in the Greater Orlando area in 2011:
-- Deploying enhanced backhaul connections to more than 200 of the area's
cell sites. Combined with HSPA+ technology, these backhaul deployments
enable 4G speeds.
-- Delivering additional wireless capacity to more than 300 cell sites in
the area through the addition of new layers of frequency, also known as
"carriers." Adding extra capacity to a cell site is like widening a
highway - you're creating more lanes to accommodate increasing traffic.
-- Installing multiple new cell sites to improve network coverage.
-- Deploying and upgrading multiple Distributed Antenna System (DAS)
networks at key areas, including numerous hotels in Orlando's theme park
area, and in other high-traffic areas, to enhance network coverage
during events and provide enhanced wireless coverage to customers in
indoor or outdoor spaces where geographical limitations might otherwise
prevent an optimal wireless experience. A DAS installation consists of
several strategically placed antennas that distribute AT&T's wireless
network coverage throughout the area, providing for more efficient
management of wireless capacity in heavily trafficked areas.

Criser said the T-Mobile acquisition provides a fast, efficient and certain solution to the impending wireless exhaust situation facing both companies while adding cell towers. Additional towers mean additional capacity which means fewer dropped calls. "We'll be able to provide better voice quality and data performance to our customers," he said.
AT&T invested nearly $500 million in its Greater Orlando wireless and wireline network from 2008 through 2010 as part of its commitment to superior service in the area. This year's plans build upon the improvements AT&T completed in 2010 to strengthen the Greater Orlando area mobile broadband network, including:

The nation's fastest mobile broadband network is getting faster with 4G. A key planned upgrade for 2011 is deployment of enhanced backhaul connections to more than 290 cell sites in Greater Orlando to enable 4G speeds. Backhaul connections carry traffic between cell sites and AT&T's nationwide network. Enhanced fiber-optic and ethernet backhaul connections expand capacity many times over, and enable additional expansion in the years to come.

AGC Unveils World's Thinnest Glass Substrate for Touchscreens
0.28 mm thickness will enable lighter smartphones and tablet PCs
TOKYO, April 21, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- AGC announced today it has developed the world's thinnest soda-lime glass substrate for touchscreens, measuring just 0.28 mm, or 15% less than the currently thinnest commercial substrate at 0.33 mm, as well as being 15% lighter, promising to further shrink smartphones and tablets in the near future. Starting with mass production using the float process later this month, AGC expects annual sales to exceed 10 billion yen (about 120 million USD) in 2013.
Glass touchscreens in smartphones and tablets comprise a tough cover material and an underlying layer of substrate material embedded with electrodes. Soda-lime glass is an ideal substrate material for touchscreens because it maintains form when subjected to heat, resists discoloring due to ultraviolet radiation, accepts chemical strengthening and is easily processed.
AGC, under its Grow Beyond strategy, is building new foundations for growth through innovative solutions for specialty glass used in displays, including Dragontrail(TM), a damage-resistant cover glass launched in January this year. AGC forecasts sales of its various, new electronics-related products, including its newly announced soda-lime glass substrate, and other specialty glass for displays, to exceed 100 billion yen (about 1.2 billion USD) in 2013.
AGC's soda-lime glass substrate is scheduled to be exhibited during Display Week 2011 of the Society for Information Display (SID) in Los Angeles, California, from May 15.
