Donation Supports National Hope Campaign To Continue Mobilizing The Latino Community

ST. PAUL, Minn., and BASKING RIDGE, N.J., Oct. 20 /PRNewswire/ --Casa de Esperanza, a leading national domestic violence prevention agency focused on Latinas, is receiving a $75,000 donation from HopeLine(®) from Verizon in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  HopeLine from Verizon is giving this donation to Casa de Esperanza to continue its efforts through its Hope Campaign, which challenges communities to take initiative against domestic violence.

According to McFarlane studies conducted in 2005, nearly one in four Latinas will experience intimate partner violence (IPV) in her lifetime, and while Latinas are abused at approximately the same rate as other women - 4.3 per 1,000 compared with 4.2 per 1,000, according to the Bureau of Justice - violence against Latinas is more likely to be underreported because of language and cultural barriers.

"There is a great need for domestic violence education within the Latino community. Though abuse exists in all kinds of families, Latino victims who face domestic violence have particular needs such as culture and language," said Elva Lima, national executive director of community relations and Latino communications for Verizon Wireless.  "Verizon Wireless has a longstanding commitment to raising awareness of domestic violence and aiding in its prevention, and through this donation, we know that Casa de Esperanza will continue to push initiatives that help the Latino community."

Based on the belief that no one is born violent and violence is a learned behavior, the Hope Campaign was created by Casa de Esperanza and funded by HopeLine from Verizon.  It was launched in 2009 and puts the work of ending domestic violence in the hands of individuals by providing tools, including PSAs and an interactive website to help recognize the positive impact words and actions can have against domestic violence.  The program also provides bilingual prevention and intervention information such as webinars, manuals and DVDs for other organizations as well as encourages people of all ages to take the Pledge of Hope.  To learn more about this program, visit http://www.casadeesperanza.org/hope-campaign.

The deal consists of the multi-media integration of VIZIO as part of ESPN's season-long college football coverage, including a new game mark that will be incorporated into all Rose Bowl Game and BCS-related materials. VIZIO also secures logo rights for product packaging, and on-site integration for all Rose Bowl related events. VIZIO's deal ensures the brand will be a part of the Rose Bowl Game's 100th Anniversary celebrating an unprecedented milestone in college bowl game history.

Jeff Kinney's The Diary of aWimpy Kid and Rick Riordan's TheLightning Thief, also released as movies earlier this year, have pushed the titles in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series out of top spots for some grades. Three of the four titles in the Twilight series have also been released as movies, with the theatrical release of the series' third title, Eclipse, in June 2010.

The report also found that contemporary 'classic' titles, such as S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders and Lois Lowry's The Giver have also overtaken last year's list-dominating Twilight titles.

The report is the third edition to highlight student reading trends since it was first released in May 2008. What Kids Are Reading, 2011, provides detailed information about the books kids are actually reading, including lists of the most widely read books for grades 1-12--by all students, by gender, and by low- and high-achieving students. This insight comes from Accelerated Reader (AR) hosted on Renaissance Learning's Real-Time platform, the world's most popular reading software and largest single database of student book-reading behavior, which includes records of more than 6.2 million students from nearly 20,000 schools nationwide.

ORLANDO, Fla., Oct. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Panda Security, The Cloud Security Company, has announced the launch of Panda Antivirus for Mac. This new solution delivers comprehensive protection against malware affecting Mac OS and Mac OS X; it also prevents Mac users from transmitting malware to other users of Windows and Linux operating systems.

Panda Antivirus for Mac scans files and email, detecting and eliminating or blocking many types of threats, including viruses, Trojans, spyware, keyloggers, adware, hacking tools, botnets, dialers, scareware and other threats that have traditionally targeted Windows users.

The solution includes two scan engines: an on-access scanner, or resident protection, that protects the computer at all times and alerts the user to any security incident; and an on-demand scanner that lets users scan the complete system or specific components at any time. Panda Antivirus for Mac can also scan Apple iPhone, iPad and iPod devices, ensuring that those devices are not used to transmit infections between other similar devices or Mac computers.

Immediate Need for Mac Security

"We receive an average of 55,000 new threats every day at PandaLabs. Hackers are always looking to profit from their activity, which is why there are so many different examples of malware," said Luis Corrons, technical director, PandaLabs. "Until recently, Apple users were not an attractive target for hackers because the number of potential victims was so small compared to Windows. But now the market is changing and with Apple's global reach, the numbers are becoming more financially appealing for cybercriminals."

Currently, Panda is aware of approximately 5,000 strains of malware that specifically affect Apple systems, with around 500 new samples appearing every month. In addition, PandaLabs has catalogued approximately 170,000 cross-platform macro viruses, which are additional sources of vulnerability for Mac users. Many web and e-mail based threats, such as phishing scams and scareware, are platform-neutral, relying on human trust rather than malicious code to achieve their criminal ends. More vulnerabilities in Mac operating systems are also emerging; in 2009, 34 vulnerabilities were reported in the Mac OS, a figure which as risen to 175 so far this year.

According to Microsoft, the companies Malicious Software Removal Tool has nuked over 275,000 machines running Windows operating system of the Zeus malware, or better known as the Zbot malware. Here is what Jeff Williams from Microsoft had to say about it:

To put this in greater perspective the removals of Zbot are almost as many as the removals of the #2 and #3 malware families this month combined (Win32/Vundo and Win32/Bubnix respectively). Approximately 86 million computers have run this version of MSRT as we compile this data so we should expect this number to increase as the month continues.

2 Billion Internet Users by End of 2010!

Wow, the International Telecommunications Union latest statistics shows that in the last five years, the internet users has doubled! And by the end of 2010 internet users will surpass the 2 billion mark........Now that is a lot of internet users. And we all thought that Wal-Mart was crowded :-)

Here is a small blurb from the International Telecommunication Unions official site:

Geneva, 19 October 2010 — ITU’s latest statistics published today in The World in 2010: ICT facts and figures reveal that the number of Internet users worldwide doubled in the past five years and will surpass the two billion mark in 2010. The number of people having access to the Internet at home has increased from 1.4 billion in 2009 to almost 1.6 billion in 2010. The new data were released on the eve of World Statistics Day, which will be celebrated worldwide on 20 October 2010.

162 million of the 226 million new Internet users in 2010 will be from developing countries, where Internet users grow at a higher rate. By the end of 2010, 71% of the population in developed countries will be online compared to 21% of the population in developing countries. While in developed countries 65% of people have access to the Internet at home, this is the case for only 13.5% of people in developing countries where Internet access in schools, at work and public locations is critical. Regional differences are significant: 65% of Europeans are on the Internet, compared to only 9.6% of Africans.

With the rapidly increasing high-bandwidth content and applications on the Internet, there is a growing demand for higher-speed broadband connections.

ITU considers broadband as a catalyst for growth. Recently, ITU and UNESCO launched the Broadband Commission for Digital Development that aims to promote the adoption of broadband-friendly practices and policies worldwide. ITU Secretary-General Hamadoun Touré says, “Broadband is the next tipping point, the next truly transformational technology. It can generate jobs, drive growth and productivity, and underpin long-term economic competitiveness. It is also the most powerful tool that we have at our disposal in our race to meet the Millennium Development Goals, the deadline for which is now just five years away.”
