Lantiq Announces New ADSL Chipset Offering Industry's Highest Density and Lowest Power Consumption for Linecard Applications

MUNICH and NEUBIBERG, Germany, Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Lantiq, a leading supplier of broadband access and home networking technologies, today introduced its latest generation chipset for ADSL linecards. The GEMINAX(TM) XXS V3 chipset further reduces capital and operating expenses of broadband access networks.

Implemented in 65 nm process technology, the new GEMINAX XXS V3 chipset offers the industry's highest level of integration with an up to 36-channel data pump in a 17 x 17mm BGA package. It offers the industry's smallest ADSL footprint while being about 30 percent smaller than existing solutions. A further unique proposition is the unmatched power consumption which allows system manufacturers to build ADSL systems that are about 20% below the EU Code of Conduct (CoC) limits for broadband infrastructure equipment.

The data pump of the GEMINAX XXS V3 is based on the same hardware platform as Lantiq's recently announced VDSL2 chipset, VINAX(TM) V3. With nearly identical ADSL/2/2+ firmware and API, system vendors have the unique ability to reuse for ADSL and VDSL linecard development.

While linecards with current generation ADSL chipsets typically feature 72 channels, the new GEMINAX XXS V3 allows designing systems with 96 or more channels on a single linecard. Systems using GEMINAX XXS V3 will reduce typical power consumption of a DSLAM by at least 12% compared to existing equipment.

According to the October 2010 iSuppli forecast, an average of almost 80 million ADSL infrastructure ports will ship each year through 2014. ADSL fully meets the requirements for IPTV, VoIP and data service delivery.

If you have missed the opportunity to visit the many cities that have had the Dead Sea Scrolls on exhibit, you may still be in luck. Google is planning to post the ancient Dead Sea Scrolls online! It is reported that Google is working with the Israel Antiquities Authority to make the ancient scrolls digitized and put them on the internet for all to see. These ancient scrolls are said to be about 2,000 years old, and digitizing them would give all of the world a chance to view these awesome works from old.

Is it possible to treat cancer with light? Well, at University of California, Irvine, they believe it may be true to treat cancer cells using LED's and photosensitizing chemicals that absorb light.

Here is what Science Daily has to say about this:

In PDT, photosensitizing chemicals that absorb light are injected into a tumor, which is then exposed to light. The chemicals generate oxygen radicals from the light energy, destroying the cancer cells. PDT is currently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of esophageal and lung cancer.

Rolf Saager, who works in the lab of Anthony Durkin at the Beckman Laser Institute at UC Irvine in collaboration with Kristen Kelly, M.D., and Modulated Imaging Inc., believes that PDT could also be used to treat skin cancer. But one obstacle to this application is the lack of a detailed imaging technique to target and monitor the effectiveness of PDT.

Customers Can Get Significant Savings on 'Quad-Play' Bundles of TV, Internet, Home Phone and Wireless

IRVING, Texas, Oct. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Consumers in Verizon's Texas wireline service area now can achieve even greater value when they get all their entertainment, information and communication services in one package.

Savings can be as high as $299 per year when bundling TV, Internet, home phone and a Verizon Wireless plan. The quad-play packages are available to customers who are served by Verizon's market-leading FiOS services or Verizon's fast, affordable digital subscriber line-based High Speed Internet (HSI), and DIRECTV® service.

For example, a bundle of 15 megabits per second (Mbps) downstream and 5 Mbps upstream FiOS Internet, FiOS TV Prime HD package and FiOS Digital Voice home phone service is now available for $99.99 a month with a guaranteed rate for 24 months for new FiOS customers. This package represents a $10-a-month savings from the regular bundle price.  When a Verizon Wireless plan is added, customers receive an additional $9.99 a month off the bundle price for Internet, TV and voice service. New customers signing up online earn an additional $5 a month savings for a total annual savings of $299. Wireless plans in Verizon FiOS bundles start at $39.99 a month for 450 minutes with a two-year commitment, and will be included in the bundle price. The final bundle price will vary depending upon which wireless plan is selected.

According to IBM's Institute for Business Value 2010 Global IT Risk Study, cloud computing raised serious concerns among respondents about the use, access and control of data: 77 percent of respondents believe that adopting cloud computing makes protecting privacy more difficult; 50 percent are concerned about a data breach or loss; and 23 percent indicate that weakening of corporate network security is a concern.  As the study illustrates, businesses see the promise of the cloud model, but security remains an inhibitor to adoption.

While an information technology (IT) foundation pertains to all cloud computing, providers and users do not generally rely on one generic model for data security. Both cloud providers and users should consider a variety of factors, including the kind of work a client wants to do in the cloud and the mechanisms and controls used. For example, clients who have collaboration tools and email work in the cloud should think about access and policy controls, while clients focused on healthcare in the cloud should be concerned with data isolation and encryption.

Top Security Experts Develop Next Generation of Solutions to Secure Cloud

Researchers at the IBM Watson and Zurich research labs are working on a variety of projects that examine new ways to bolster cloud security by enabling enhanced data integrity, recovery, privacy, and customer isolation in a public cloud environment.

For example, IBM researchers have developed mechanisms that enhance cloud security by providing "infrastructure hardening," or stronger isolation between different workloads. These mechanisms verify the integrity and correct configuration of infrastructure components such as hypervisors to help prevent low-level attacks such as spoofing, or deceiving computer systems or other computer users by hiding or imitating an Internet identity. IBM recently added some of these security capabilities to the IBM Smart Business Test and Development cloud. Some of these security mechanisms are also currently offered in the IBM Systems Director VMControl(TM).

Another example of IBM's ability to rapidly take advantage of new cloud security techniques pioneered by its researchers is the integration of "introspection monitoring" into the IBM Security Virtual Server Protection for VMware offering. This capability enables a kind of "virtual doorman," in the cloud environment, which detects potential malware attacks from outside the virtual machine and scans the operating systems inside to confirm they are running properly. The capability will then determine whether or not they contain malicious code, such as root-kits, which are software programs designed to provide a user with administrator access to a computer without being detected. This level of security isn't available from conventional introspection solutions that can only communicate and check inside the virtual machine.

SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- First State Bank & Trust in Kansas had a disaster recovery plan in place to protect its mainframe functions, which served its purpose, until recently. With the advent of the digital age and online financial applications becoming the crux of the business, the bank needed to expand its disaster recovery strategy while also freeing up needed storage capacity. To that end, the bank selected Pillar Data Systems as its storage platform to support its IT and business goals.

Harry M. Wheeler Jr., Senior Vice President, First State Bank & Trust determined that the applications on the network - check imaging, remote deposits, customer account inquiries and online banking, among others, had become mission-critical to the bank's business. As such, the bank's storage requirements had doubled in the past 18 months.

"We added applications one by one over a stretch of time and one day realized if these applications aren't available, the bank can't function," said Wheeler. "The heart of the business used to be in the mainframe where statements and ledgers are produced. Now the heart is the network where all of the applications reside - applications depended on by bank staff and customers."

First State Bank didn't have the luxury of being able to dedicate staff for the tasks at hand. It enlisted the help of its technology partner, Choice Solutions who helped plot out the course for the new IT strategy. Its first step was to recommend the Pillar Axiom for the storage component. Aside from the need to fortify its disaster recovery plan, Wheeler also wanted to virtualize 13 servers with the goal of increasing useable capacity and decreasing total cost of ownership.

Now, only 60 days after beginning the process, First State Bank is replicating in real-time and the recovery period went from five days to two hours. In addition to its new and improved disaster recovery strategy, the bank experienced a significant increase in useable capacity, which turned into immediate and substantial cost savings. And with the virtualization project complete, Wheeler was able to get rid of one and a half racks, significantly reducing the heat output, as well as reducing overall software costs.

The visionary new solution relies on two essential components: the Envivio multi-screen head end for high quality audio/video processing and compression, and the Envivio Network Media Processors (NMP) in charge of packaging, encryption and distribution inside the CDN.        all services. Encoding is performed once by a centralized Envivio
       4Caster(TM) C4 system, which outputs a single Envivio Genesis
       intermediate mezzanine format that can then support all the required
       resolutions and bit rates for live and on demand services for every
       device on the network. Thanks to the native multi-screen and Extreme(TM)
       Compression capabilities of 4Caster, the most advanced and sophisticated
       pre-processing and compression algorithms are applied across all output
       streams for the best visual results.
    2. The Envivio Genesis architecture requires only a single core content
       delivery backbone or satellite uplink for distribution of the common
       intermediate mezzanine format, instead of carrying a specific packaged
       and encrypted format for each device, each on its own different delivery
       network. This dramatically reduces backbone bandwidth requirements and
       streamlines network management and monitoring.
    3. Final packaging and encryption for distribution to specific devices and
       platforms is handled by Envivio NMPs that can be added as needed to
       support new devices without impacting the head end or the core network
       delivery backbone. The Envivio NMP provides a logical platform for
       audience-specific content insertion, encryption and transport adaptation
       for different networks.
