Refined Searching

Incorporated in the sites is an enhanced search engine that provides more accurate results and story preview.  Narrow by date, content type (such as story, videos, events, and jobs), industry and writer.

Social Media Integration and Dynamic Content

Easily link Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn profiles to share content with friends.  The audience an also use their social networking accounts to log in to their Business Journal account.  Article pages are more engaging with larger photos, videos, and links to related company and industry news, relevant research and additional info on people mentioned in the story.

Personal User Bar

The new Personal User Bar simplifies the process of managing user accounts and subscriptions.  Comment on stories, configure news alerts, manage e-mail and print subscriptions, and link to social network accounts.

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Oct. 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Trimble (Nasdaq: TRMB) announced today it has acquired the business of ThingMagic, Inc. of Cambridge, Massachusetts. ThingMagic is a leading developer of radio frequency identification (RFID) technology and offers advanced development services to facilitate the integration of RFID into a wide range of applications. The acquisition expands Trimble's technology portfolio and will enable the company to provide additional productivity solutions in its served industries. Financial terms were not disclosed.

    The 6" x 6" AMLCD display functions as a primary flight display offering
the high brightness and contrast, excellent resolution, readability and
clarity required in the open configuration of a cockpit. Its outstanding
characteristics include 8:1 contrast ratio in full sunlight with a brightness
of 240 foot-Lamberts (fL), fully night vision goggles (NGV) compatible for
night mode operation. With a display area of 6.17" x 6.17", the compact AMLCD
is designed to conserve valuable space without sacrificing performance. The
display offers a very flexible video interface supporting multiple analog and
digital video channels and multiple serial data links such as RS-422 and
discretes. Low weight, small volume and light construction are major
advantages of the display.

    STORM Unmanned Aircraft System - Presented by UAS Dynamics

    The STORM UAS offers an industry-leading payload capacity. It is designed
to meet the dynamic operational environment and expeditionary requirements of
the Department of Defense and other potential U.S. government customers.
STORM's flexible design offers multiple launch and recovery methods that can
be tailored to the environment and physical constraints common in austere
combat outposts. STORM has a single mission endurance of 18 hours with a 30
pound payload, and. has the capability to carry a maximum of 75 pounds of
payload to support the needs of the mission. The system's flexibility
increases situational awareness, targeting capability and overall lethality.
Key functions such as mission payload operation are automated and blended
with standard flight modes to increase mission effectiveness while reducing
operator workload and skill level requirements. While most other systems
require an air vehicle operator and a mission payload operator, the STORM
system only needs one operator while simultaneously increasing overall system
effectiveness and operator efficiency.

    A family of thermal imaging systems including:

    KAT EYE(TM) MR Surveillance System

    The KAT EYE(TM) system is a high-performance, highly-mobile and easy to
emplace Medium Range Day/Night Wireless Surveillance System using a cutting
edge day camera and a cooled, highly sensitive 640x480 InSb Focal Plane Array
thermal camera with 8X continuous optical zoom. The system is image
stabilized and has automatic tracking of targets. The basic system consists
of a Base Station and one Remote Station which can be emplaced up to 5 Km
away for wireless operation or within 500m for fiber optic operation. A
single Base Station can monitor and control up to four (4) Remote Stations.
The system can be powered by generator, batteries, solar (supplemental
power), or vehicle power.

    Coral-CR

    Featured in the video, the Coral-CR is a high-performance, tripod mounted
or hand-held Long Range Day/Night Thermal Imaging System using a cutting edge
camera and a cooled, highly sensitive 640x512 InSb Focal Plane Array thermal
camera with continuous optical zoom, as well as 4X digital zoom. The Laser
Range Finder, digital magnetic compass, and global positioning system allow
generation of target coordinates to 10Km. The Coral-CR also supports video
out via standard BNC connector.

    MARS

    Also featured in the video is MARS. Mars is an uncooled hand-held thermal
imager with target acquisition capabilities. This lightweight, compact system
will be featured in the multimedia video presentation and includes two day
cameras - Wide Field of View and Narrow Field of View, as well as an eye-safe

    - Increased Forecast Accuracy to Improve Customer Service Levels

supply chain planning solution across the European region. SO99+ from

inventory optimisation of around 500,000 product lines, resulting in an
improvement in customer service levels.

    Following several intensive months of business preparation and
simulations to understand fully the implications of SO99+, RS is now
calculating an 18 month forward view of demand, based on three years of
demand history at an order level, which is being used to drive all inventory
purchase orders across Europe.

Unisys will provide infrastructure, software and services for Colt to provide an enterprise cloud service that lets businesses access IT services more efficiently at lower cost

LONDON, Oct. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Unisys Corporation (NYSE: UIS) today announced that its European subsidiary Unisys Limited has entered into a contract to provide Colt Technology Services with infrastructure, cloud management software and services. After the initial UK implementation, the companies intend to provide the services from an additional six data centres within Colt's European network.  Both Colt and Unisys will use this environment to deliver cloud-based services to their customers throughout Europe.

Colt is a leading provider of business communications and IT managed services to organisations throughout Europe. Part of Colt's overall cloud strategy, these new services are intended to increase customers' flexibility in accessing IT infrastructure and software resources on an as-needed basis while minimising capital costs.

Under the initial three-year agreement, Unisys will implement a cloud computing environment, which will be installed in Colt's secure data centre. Colt will provide a range of infrastructure, platform and virtualised desktop services based on this platform.

Unisys will manage its cloud-based infrastructure using the Unisys Converged Remote Infrastructure Management Suite of solutions. These ITIL-compliant, best- practice IT management services will be integrated into Colt's existing ITIL V3 Service Operation.

Harris Corporation (NYSE: HRS) and ITT Corporation (NYSE: ITT) are collaborating to accelerate the fielding of the Soldier Radio Waveform, a central piece of the U.S. Department of Defense vision for a networked digital battlefield.

Harris and ITT have successfully exchanged voice and data between the Harris Falcon III® AN/PRC-117G manpack and ITT's Soldier Radio development model using the specified SRW Version 1.01.1C.  This is the first time that independently developed tactical radios have interoperated using open-standard wideband JTRS technology.  Both the AN/PRC-117G and ITT's Soldier Radio were developed under the JTRS Enterprise Business Model, which is designed to spur innovation in tactical communications.Harris' rapid implementation demonstrates the portability of SRW.

The Soldier Radio Waveform is being developed to serve as a standard for wideband tactical communications for the U.S. Department of Defense. SRW will deliver voice, data, and high-bandwidth networking capabilities to forces at the tactical edge.

Following the success of the exercise, Harris plans to conduct additional testing to include additional SRW features, such as communications security and SRW Network Manager integration. The company is integrating SRW into the AN/PRC-117G manpack, with release expected next summer.

The Harris Falcon III AN/PRC-117G is the first wideband manpack radio system with a JTRS-certified Software Communications Architecture and NSA Type-1 certified information security.  The radio's wideband architecture enables applications such as streaming video, simultaneous voice, and data feeds, collaborative chat, and connectivity to secure networks such as SIPRNet, providing warfighters and field commanders with critical real-time information through a man-portable radio that is significantly smaller, lighter and more capable than legacy units.

As part of the collaboration, Microsoft will provide architectural and technical guidance to Cloud.com. Cloud.com in turn will develop the code to support OpenStack on Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V. Once complete, the project code will be checked into the public code repository at http://openstack.org.

OpenStack uses open source software on standard hardware. Simply put, the software can run on an individual server in an existing datacenter or run on hardware configured as a modular datacenter. It uses virtualization technology to create and manage large groups of virtual machines.

The addition of Microsoft's virtualization product puts customers in an excellent position to reach economies of scale to run Windows- and Linux-based infrastructure. Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V can efficiently run multiple different operating systems in parallel.

        full-time employee is enrolled in a subsidized health care plan (2014)
    --  The excise tax on high-cost health plans, which applies to plans that

ARMONK, N.Y., Oct. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM (NYSE: IBM) inventors have developed a patented natural disaster warning system, which uses analytics to improve the effectiveness and timeliness of post-event rescue efforts in cities and other locations where efficient emergency response is essential following a natural disaster. It also offers a means to accurately predict the location and timing of subsequent catastrophic events, which will further aid evacuation efforts.

IBM's patented technique can enable a system that accurately and precisely conducts post-event analysis of seismic events, such as earthquakes, as well as provide early warnings for tsunamis, which can follow earthquakes. The invention also provides the ability to rapidly measure and analyze the damage zone of an earthquake to help prioritize emergency response needed following an earthquake.

The invention uses data generated by vibration sensors (known as MEMS accelerometers) within computer hard disk drives to quickly analyze and assess information generated by seismic events. This technique is enabled by collecting hard drive sensor data and transmitting it via high speed networking to a data processing center, which can analyze the data, classify the events, and enrich the data -- in real time.

Following rapid analysis of the hard drive data, it can be determined exactly when a seismic event started, how long a seismic event lasted, the intensity of a seismic event, the frequency of motion of a seismic event, direction of motion of a seismic event, etc. The information is then delivered to decision makers for action, including the emergency response representatives, such as police, firefighters, the Federal Emergency Management Agency or other service providers.

While the physics of earthquakes and earthquake detection is a well understood science, the seismograph technology used in this process is thinly distributed over a broad area around the world. Consequently, earthquake data is limited to a few geographical locations and little post-event analysis is available to aid emergency response. In addition, the seismographs do not provide fine-grained data about where emergency response is needed and cannot predict impending events, such as tsunamis.

IBM inventors Robert Friedlander and James Kraemer were issued U.S. Patent #7,693,663 "System and method for detection of earthquakes and tsunamis, and hierarchical analysis, threat classification, and interface to warning systems" for their invention.

LONDON, Oct. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Georgina Chapman, Henry Holland, Josh Rubin and Jessica Schwarz are among 40* influential names from ten cities, working in fashion, design, music and film who will collaborate with Range Rover over the next 12 months to launch the highly anticipated Range Rover Evoque.

Each of the influencers has been recruited to participate in the Pulse of the City project where their journeys will be tracked around their favorite cities to create a living interactive guide to the urban spaces they call home.

Pulse of the City app

In a world first, the 'Pulse of the City' app, launches on iPhone (android available from mid November) and uses GPS tracking to record the collective movements of people within the ten cities. Users will be sent a graphical representation of their journey which they can display on the Helloevoque.com website.

Participants will also be able to add comments about their favorite walks, hot spots and journeys, creating a real time, evolving pulse of each city. Both 'City Shapers' and the public will be able to download the app for free.

Inspired by the new Range Rover Evoque and the cities that in turn inspired its design; the app will bring each city to life through the people who shape it.

Gogo® Inflight Internet service complimentary between Anchorage and Fairbanks and coming soon to Southeast Alaska

SEATTLE, Oct. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Alaska Airlines launched Aircell's Gogo® Inflight Internet service today on flights between Anchorage and Fairbanks, Alaska. The service will be complimentary to passengers traveling between the two cities until the remainder of Aircell's network in the state of Alaska goes live later this year.

Using Gogo, Alaska Airlines passengers with Wi-Fi-enabled devices can browse the Web; access online music, games, podcasts and webcasts; send and receive e-mail; and connect to virtual private networks while flying. The easy-to-use service provides passengers with full Internet access on any Wi-Fi-equipped laptop or personal electronic device at speeds similar to wireless mobile broadband services on the ground. Windows 7 is celebrating its first year, and Microsoft has something to really celebrate. In a Windows blog by Brandon LeBlanc it is reported that Microsoft has sold more than 240 million copies of the Windows 7 operating system.

Toshiba's Carbon-Free Printing Supports US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's Call for Cleaner Stoves

    Toshiba TEC Imaging's Carbon-Zero printing scheme has had a huge impact
on over 4,000 Kenyan families since its launch earlier this year; supporting
recent calls by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for an international
effort to replace dirty stoves with environmentally friendly and healthier
versions.

    Since the launch of the scheme in early 2010, over 60,000 tonnes of CO2
have been removed from the environment as a result of Toshiba customers
offsetting the carbon emissions associated with the manufacture, servicing
and daily use of their multi-function printers (MFPs). This carbon reduction
equates to the CO2 produced by 20,000 average cars doing 9,000 miles a year -
in volume terms, equivalent to over 296,000 London buses.

    The African Energy Efficient Stove project, which is run through the
independent British organisation co2balance, supplies domestic stoves that
cut the use of firewood by more than half. It is estimated that cooking alone
is responsible for 20% of the world's black carbon.

    However the scheme does not only benefit the environment: it also helps
reduces the 1.6 million deaths each year that the World Health Association
identifies as associated with smoke inhalation. In fact, the WHO states that
cooking on an inefficient '3-stone fire' is the equivalent of smoking 2
packets of cigarettes a day.

    Providing clean stoves to families in a developing country such as Kenya
ensures an opportunity for businesses to offset the environmental impact of
the carbon emissions produced by Toshiba multi-function printers (MFPs)
through their design, manufacturing, distribution and daily use.

    Toshiba MFPs already feature cutting-edge functionality that helps users
reduce their environmental impact, but some level of CO2 emissions are the
inevitable consequence of the manufacture, design and use of office products.
Toshiba's Carbon Zero programme allows customers to offset such emissions in
full, including servicing and consumables, for five years of the product's
life, or one million copies.

ambitions - by recycling, or encouraging employees not to print documents
unnecessarily - can only go so far."
