Fort Worth Museum of Science and History Makes History Through Skype With Plastiki Crew Leader
David de Rothschild Encourages Young People To Make A Difference
FORT WORTH, Texas, June 14 -- More than 200 guests at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History (FWMSH) - including 150 children and teens - learned firsthand about the environmental impact of plastic on the world's oceans during a 10-minute Skype session today (June 14, 2010) with Adventure Ecology founder and environmentalist David de Rothschild. Rothschild linked into the Museum while on board the Plastiki, a 60-foot catamaran engineered from recyclable materials and 12,500 reclaimed plastic soda bottles, while sailing just north of Samoa. Rothschild and his intrepid crew set sail aboard the Plastiki, an 'off-the-grid' vessel that showcases waste as a resource whilst being powered by renewable energy systems, to draw attention to the health of our oceans - in particular the Great Pacific Garbage Patch - March 22, 2010.
When asked "What gave you the idea to make your plastic boat, and why did you?" by Christin Andrews, a student from Crossland Ninth Grade Center, Granbury, Texas, de Rothschild replied, "The first thing is, be careful what you wish for because sometimes it might just happen. I was reading a report about plastics in the ocean and wanted to figure out a way in which we could bring attention to this issue in an exciting way. I wanted to really bring it to life. After numerous discussions, I came up with the idea to create a boat entirely out of plastic to showcase the issues we are seeing in our oceans.
"The adventure began almost four years ago to the day we set sail," de Rothschild added. "We've all got the capacity to make a difference. So I urge all of you to find your own Plastikis to start your own dreams and really make your own adventures. It really can make a difference in helping this planet."
Christian Gomez from the Crossland Center in Granbury asked, "What really encouraged you to make this risky journey around the world?"
Rothschild replied that he sees it as a very small risk compared to the risk that we are running of inaction. "At the end of the day we are one species," de Rothschild said. "There are millions of species on this planet that we have to share it with. Sometimes we tend to forget that ... so for me, this really seemed like a very very small risk if it could have a positive impact on helping us and all the other species live more sustainably. I don't see it as a risk, really.
"Obviously, if you ask my mum the same question, she'll probably tell you something different," he added. "At this stage I see it as a small step hopefully towards a big impact."
Rothschild moved the Skype camera around to show participants the interior of the catamaran including other crew members, the galley, and the navigation area, as well as the view out the window of a calm ocean.
"We are currently moving slowly, at 2.7 knots, and have 2,800 miles to go to get to Sydney," Rothschild said. He also encouraged and thanked the audience.
"I want you guys to know that we are inspired by what you have done. There are days when it gets very tough out here on the ocean," de Rothschild said. "What you have done at the museum and all you guys showing up today is what keeps us going. You really are the inspiration - you are the change makers. I appreciate your support and I'm so inspired so please keep doing what you are doing."
Museum of Science and History Van A. Romans offered de Rothschild a personal thank you. "You being here and talking with us in our Museum - conversing with us on Skype - is absolutely fantastic!" Romans said. "We've got 150 kids here who are listening to you and they are going to make the change that you want." NetChoice Welcomes U.S. Commerce Department's Increasing Role as Global Advocate for Fair and Flexible Online Privacy Regulations
WASHINGTON, June 14 -- NetChoice today filed comments with the U.S. Department of Commerce welcoming the agency's increased role in advocating for streamlined and proactive regulations that will promote online services. The entire comments can be found here.
The comments were filed in response to a Commerce Department notice seeking input from online innovators regarding the agency's future role in guiding policy recommendations on U.S. and international privacy issues.
"There is an important role for the U.S. Commerce Department in helping to harmonize regulations that protect American companies' ability to innovate in both international and domestic spaces," said Steve DelBianco, executive director of NetChoice. "We welcome the Commerce Department as a strong partner in the many ongoing conversations that will define the future online experience."
A Foreign and Domestic Role for the Commerce Department
Online companies welcome an increased role for the Department in promoting online commerce in a privacy-related context. Domestically, the Department should work with the FTC to step-up state and federal enforcement against unfair or deceptive information practices.
The current process through which the FTC makes rules, as established by the Magnuson-Moss Act, is a proven and effective vehicle for the regulation of business and provides the Commission with enforcement authority to punish businesses that act in a deceptive manner or in ways that are unfair to the consumer.
On the international front, now is a critical time for online commerce as international policymakers assess their approaches to privacy. The Department can play an important role as a government-to-government advocate for flexible international rules to promote continued innovation and economic growth.
As an international spokesman for online service innovation, the Department should promote privacy laws that are flexible enough to permit innovation, and oppose static laws that undermine consumer interests in improved online services. And as a government agency speaking to other government agencies, the Department can bring credibility and leverage that cannot be matched by corporate interests alone.
Specifically, the Department can work with foreign regulatory authorities and multi-governmental organizations to develop new mechanisms for achieving mutual recognition. The EU's policy toward Binding Corporate Rules (BCRs) could emerge as a key element of a mutual recognition framework. BCRs are corporate codes of conduct that legally bind a company and its partners to EU-compliant data management systems. BCRs allow companies to share personal data on EU citizens, in-house and worldwide.
However, BCRs represent a serious commitment for companies, and they are out of reach for most American companies. They require extensive time and financial resources to implement. There are also ongoing costs for compliance, internal control and supervision, and auditing.
The Department should work with the European Commission to greatly simplify the BCR process and make it more accessible to small businesses.
"Privacy is the defining issue of 2010," said DelBianco. "The Department of Commerce can help develop rules that respect consumer privacy while also guaranteeing one of our nation's most important industries the freedom to grow and innovate."

National Instruments Expands NI-XNET Embedded Network Platform With Support for the LIN Communication Bus

The new NI PXI-8516 and NI PCI-8516 LIN interfaces make it possible for engineers and scientists to develop LIN applications in NI LabVIEW, NI LabWindows(TM)/CVI and C/C++ for Windows and LabVIEW Real-Time OSs. Online Quant and Qual Research Now Automatically Linked; Hybrid Studies Get Faster and Easier

In "The Clash of Triton," King Neptune wants to celebrate his 5,000th birthday at the hottest spot in town - none other then the Krusty Krab! SpongeBob and crew spare no expense for the gala, rolling out the red carpet to welcome the royal family. Despite their best efforts, the absence of Neptune's son, Triton, brings down the king's spirits and spoils the festivities for everyone, especially his wife, Queen Amphitrite. The gang soon learns that Neptune banished his son to a deserted island until Triton is ready to follow in his father's footsteps. Determined to make this the king's happiest birthday ever and save the day, SpongeBob sets out to find Triton and bring him back to the party. Unfortunately no one anticipated Triton's wrath and now Bikini Bottom may get caught in the net of revenge meant for his father.
The premiere and encores of "The Clash of Triton" will be simulcast on Nickelodeon Mobile, and the special episode will be available on download-to-own platforms following its on-air premiere. Additionally, Nickelodeon will launch a Game of the Week themed to the special on Monday, July 5, called "SpongeBob SquarePants: The Clash of Triton." In the game, available on http://spongebob.nick.com/, players must prevent Triton from ruining Neptune's party and ravaging all of Bikini Bottom. "SpongeBob's Clash of Triton" will be available July 13 on DVD from Nickelodeon Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Entertainment.
