AT&T Rolls Out new Upgrades to U-verse(R) DVR and YP.COM TV App
DALLAS, May 20 -- AT&T is making the U-verse TV experience better again. AT&T* today announced it will roll out several AT&T U-verse TV DVR enhancements and add new functionality to the U-verse YP.COM TV app for all U-verse TV customers at no extra cost over the coming weeks.
"These new features are the latest examples of how AT&T U-verse gives you a better TV and entertainment experience, with easy to use apps and an even better DVR," said Jeff Weber, vice president of video services, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. "Whether it's making a call from your U-verse TV screen with our YP.COM TV app or bringing more functionality to our Total Home DVR, we continue to use our IP platform to give customers more control of their viewing experience and bring exciting, integrated features to the U-verse home."
The U-verse TV enhancements announced today include the ability to:
Place calls within the YP.COM TV app. Using the YP.COM TV app, introduced in 2007, you can enter your zip code to search for local business information, phone numbers and maps directly on your TV screen. With the latest upgrades, once you find the business of your choice, you can conveniently select "Make a Call" with your remote to automatically connect the call to your U-verse Voice home phone. You can also enter your wireless phone number on-screen to send the call to your mobile phone as you head out the door. The app is available to all U-verse TV customers on channel 97, and through the Interactive Menu, at no extra charge.
Customize More U-verse Total Home DVR Settings. The U-verse DVR allows you to record up to four programs at once on a single DVR -- a capability unmatched by cable providers. This feature prevents most recording conflicts, but with Series Priority, you can also prioritize all of your household's scheduled recordings. The new Keep at Most feature lets you select how many episodes of a recorded series are stored on your DVR, and allows you to store a recording until the date you select. With Series Delete, you can delete all recordings of a series with one click of the remote control.
These upgrades add to the numerous features and applications that enhance your entertainment experience, including the ability to watch up to four channels at one time with the award-winning U-verse TV Multiview; access to an extensive High Definition (HD) channel lineup with more than 130 HD channels; the ability to program DVR recordings from your Web-connected mobile phone or PC; personalized, on-screen weather, sports, traffic and stock information via AT&T U-bar; the ability to stream your personal photos and music files from your PC to your U-verse TV with Media Share; the ability to check the current weather conditions and forecasts in any U.S. city with Weather On Demand; and more.

Protect America Raises Community Awareness with New Crime Statistics Web Site and Alert Service
ROUND ROCK, Texas, May 20 -- Protect America, one of the nation's largest and most affordable home security companies, launched a new and free crime statistics report and sexual predator alert service on its web site - all in an effort to raise community awareness and provide parents with necessary information to keep their families safe.
Protect America created this service on its web site using FBI data to show local crime statistics for all 50 states and most major towns and cities within each state. The site not only provides criminal information but also uses a formula giving cities and states a letter grade of A through F for their overall crime rate and gives grades for each crime category, ranging from aggravated assault to larceny.
In addition to the crime stats, the site also offers maps of local areas and locations for sexual offenders that live or work nearby. Users can learn more about offenders by navigating through the map, which displays pictures of offenders, along with additional information, including the nature of the offenses committed.
Protect America CEO Thad Paschall said he added this feature to his company's web site as a free community service tool to raise awareness for parents. "I'm a father and I think, as a parent, it's important to know if the community where I live is really safe. As the CEO of a security company, I'm aware of these statistics and sharing this information can only raise the awareness of the community as a whole," said Paschall.
Protect America's web site provides this free information, and offers another free service that allows parents to sign up for "Sexual Predator Alerts" by simply logging on to http://www.protectamerica.com/crime-rate and signing up for email alerts anytime a sexual predator moves into their area or anytime a new sexual predator is required to register in their area.
Protect America also recommends that every family consider getting a monitored home security system to protect their home and family. Protect America was named the #1 home security company in the country for three consecutive years by TopConsumerReviews.com and won the Consumer's Digest Best Buy Award for its Copper Package home security system.
Protect America offers the most affordable home security solutions available saving consumers over 40 percent combined on equipment and monitoring, on average compared to ADT. The company also offers consumers a "Low Price Guarantee" on its most popular package, which provides consumers with coverage for up to 10 doors and windows for free when they sign up for monitoring services.
In a customer testimonial on the company's website, Yvonne from Belen, New Mexico, said, "I just want to say thanks. One of my neighbors recently had a break in. During the questioning, the robber said that he wanted to break into our home but saw the sign that said our home was monitored by Protect America and went next door instead. My neighbors were lucky that my oldest son was up late that night and called the police. Thank you so much for keeping my family safe."
Protect America offers consumers a free GE home security system when signing up for a monthly monitoring service. Protect America offers several equipment packages, along with flexible landline, broadband, and cellular monitoring options to create a menu of services that allows an affordable option for just about every family's budget. DataFlux-Teradata Collaboration Helps Companies Better Manage Rising Data Volumes
New initiative combines Teradata enterprise intelligence systems with DataFlux data quality technologies for master data management
DAYTON, Ohio, May 20 -- Teradata, a global leader in data warehousing and enterprise analytics, and DataFlux, a leading provider of data management solutions, today announced a partnership agreement for the Americas region to add industry-leading data quality technology to Teradata data warehousing and master data management (MDM) environments. The solution is a joint offering that combines Teradata's Enterprise Data Warehouse with DataFlux data quality technologies, enabling organizations to more effectively manage growing volumes of detailed enterprise data accurately, reliably and consistently.
Data warehousing systems collect, organize, and analyze data from many sources to produce an integrated view of detailed information, often for real time. With data volumes rising from every direction and companies requiring more detail, quality and accuracy to make business decisions and process controls more effective, there is a critical need for data warehousing to be powered by high-quality data. DataFlux and Teradata are collaborating to improve data integrity by embedding quality-optimizing processes in the data warehouse infrastructure to consolidate, cleanse, match and standardize data across the enterprise.
Organizations today need to view high-quality data as a strategic asset and understand its importance to the success of intelligence-driven business processes. By combining industry-leading technologies, DataFlux and Teradata are targeting organizations that need to proactively address data quality issues. When unresolved, these issues not only drive up the cost of quality but can undermine processes that govern economic performance, financial analysis, customer relationships and the supply chain efficiency.
"When reliable and trusted data is used to make business decisions, the entire organization benefits," said Tony Fisher, president and CEO of DataFlux. "We're joining forces with Teradata to offer combined data management and enterprise data solutions. By relying on the industry's leading data quality platform, Teradata can provide an accurate, up-to-date view of actionable information across systems, departments and entire businesses."
"The use of reliable and consistently accurate data should be a business imperative for any data warehouse project," said Rob Berman, vice president of Teradata. "With our combined technologies, we are enhancing the value of the data warehouse and raising users' confidence and trust in the insight being delivered to the business - while saving our shared customers significant time and money."

iConji is a fun, new way to communicate with friends across town or around the world using a vocabulary of pictographs whose meanings are translated into several languages.
iConji was initially conceived by Kai Staats and Dan Burcaw, co-founders of Terra Soft Solutions, former developer of Yellow Dog Linux, as a means by which messaging could offer more rich, engaging communications in a world where nearly two-thirds of the population of the planet now have access to, or own mobile phones. Current trends predict that these nearly four billion phones will be replaced with models offering interactive screens and always-on connectivity.
Kai Staats, now Principal Manager of Over the Sun, LLC, states, "iConji was born of a concept for how a new kind of digital communication could bridge the gaps between the cultures of our world, not to take away their unique identities, but to express them. The iConji vocabulary is 'open' in that it will grow, given new characters contributed by a worldwide community, enriching the vocabulary for everyone."
An iConji character is an image within a 32x32 pixel square which holds a single meaning, such as "sports car" or a dual meaning such as "food" plus "to eat."
Each character carries the author's name, a brief story of its creation, and user generated data such as location and notes, and if desired, designation as a noun, verb, adjective, or adverb.
Staats concludes, "While iConji may carry a deeper, intrinsic value in cultural expression -- it's just fun to use. Using homonyms and plays-on-words, iConji messages are often quite humorous as well as informative. Whether you are sending a complete sentence with proper grammar to a co-worker, or a simple, one-character message inviting a friend for a drink after work, receiving an iConji message always causes me to smile. As the old saying goes, 'a picture is worth a thousand words.'"
Dan Burcaw, CEO of Double Encore, a leading iPhone OS developer, called iConji a "game-changer," adding, "As technology evolves, it is projects like iConji that take full advantage of devices such as the iPhone, opening the door to a whole new way of thinking about human communication. We are honored to have been part of this project."
The iConji vocabulary launches with 1185 characters, each translated into English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Hindi, Mandarin Chinese, and Japanese, with Turkish and Swahili in progress.
iConji is immediately available from the Apple iTunes store for Apple iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad; and as a free Facebook and web browser application.
Over the Sun is an innovations company exploring product development opportunities in diverse markets, including social networking and mobile, personal computing. iConji marks OTS's first product delivery.

Comcast Media Center and thePlatform Announce Validation of Their Online Video Publishing Capabilities in Preserving Nielsen's Audio Watermarks
New Capability is Ideal for 'TV Everywhere' Deployments by Cable Programmers and Television Service Providers
SEATTLE, May 20 -- Comcast Media Center and thePlatform today announced that they have collaborated with Nielsen to validate that their online video publishing solutions successfully preserve Nielsen's audio watermarks, allowing online publishing of premium, ad-supported video content. Nielsen's ratings system uses these watermarks to measure audiences for both video programming and commercials. This system provides the C3 ratings, which are the basis for the majority of television advertising negotiations, and will be extended to video viewing on the Internet this fall. This validation is the next logical step in advancing longer-term efforts to provide multi-platform audience measurement for media and entertainment companies served by thePlatform and Comcast Media Center.
thePlatform's mpx video management and publishing system will allow networks interested in participating in "TV Everywhere" initiatives to distribute their content online, so that Nielsen can measure eligible cable, telco, and satellite video customers who access video programming via the Web.
"The combined capabilities of thePlatform and the CMC represent a fast, seamless and effective means for television networks and their advertisers to measure the 'TV Everywhere' audience, which continues to grow as a result of consumer demand for shows they can watch both when and where they wish," said Gary Traver, senior vice president and chief operating officer of Comcast Media Center.
"Media companies are now wholeheartedly embracing multi-platform video distribution, and they want to make sure that their viewers are counted in the C3 ratings," said Ian Blaine, CEO of thePlatform. "Confirmation that the Nielsen watermarks flow through the CMC process is a critical step to realizing this cross-platform goal."
For this initial implementation, thePlatform and CMC have developed a streamlined process to deliver national television shows to the Web:
-- Using the CMC's Content Distribution Operations Center, or "CDOC"
ingest service, CMC first captures the national video feed of a
programmer's show.
-- The CMC provides editing functions for its customers and transcodes
the file into a format suitable for online viewing with the Nielsen
audio watermark still intact. The CMC uploads the new Flash video file
into the customer's video management system.
-- Customers can then publish their show to an online video player or
website, using a video management system like thePlatform's, which has
been validated to preserve the Nielsen watermark.
-- Depending on its customers' strategy, thePlatform will provide the
capability to replace this file as necessary to pursue other business
models, such as online video advertising insertions.
Both companies will continue to work with Nielsen as it introduces the Extended Screen ratings program to the industry later this year.
Denver-based Comcast Media Center (CMC), a subsidiary of Comcast Cable, provides centralized content management and distribution solutions for cable systems, video content providers and advertisers. More information about the CMC is available at http://www.comcastmediacenter.com.

SIFY Launches On-Demand Cloud Services Using HP Converged Infrastructure
Collaborate to Power India's First Full-Fledged Public Cloud Based Service
MUMBAI, India, May 20, 2010-- HP and Sify Technologies Limited, a leading Data Center player (NASDAQ,
Global Markets: SIFY) today jointly announced an agreement to power SIFY's
On-Demand cloud services using HP's Converged Infrastructure
(http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/solutions/converged/main.html). This will
allow Sify to provide demand based computing services on a pay per use or
flexible contract model. Customers using the new service will be able to
accelerate time to market and reduce cost by leveraging IT services on the
fly, without making substantial capital investments in technology.
Established in 1998, Sify is India's first Private Internet Service
Provider (ISP). In 2000, Sify built India's first Tier III Internet Data
Center at Vashi, Navi Mumbai. The company today provides data center hosting
services, corporate connectivity services, managed network, voice services,
applications and system integration services. Continuing the journey to
simplify computing access for businesses and organizations, Sify wanted to
expand its offering with new cloud based services. To build and secure an
agile cloud infrastructure, it required a robust, integrated, flexible but
simplified platform that would significantly minimize the time to provision
new users or application infrastructure. In addition, the model demanded
instant capacity augmentation and scalability of computing resources.
Using HP's Converged Infrastructure, Sify is now launching new cloud
services including Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Platform-as-a-Service
(PaaS) and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) for select applications under its
On-Demand Hosting Platform. To enable this, the Blade System Matrix
(http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/solutions/converged/main.html) a product
of HP's converged infrastructure, pools together Sify's IT resource into a
highly automated and virtualized resource pool. Specific application
templates have been developed to automatically provision resources for every
new business requirement. Businesses users will be able to request IT
services on the fly by using a self service portal powered by the HP Insight
Orchestration
(http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/solutions/insightdynamics/provision.html)
tool, within the Blade System Matrix.
Raju Vegesna, Chairman and Managing Director, Sify Technologies Limited,
said "We are excited and energized by the launch of On-Demand platform, as it
extends our commitment to our customers of "keeping them ahead" by bringing
innovative, business centric, services oriented approach to their
connectivity, hosting, and communications needs. We will continue to invest
and innovate in building "Information Communication Technology-
ICT"-as-a-service model, which will enable our customers in India and beyond,
to leverage technology on the TAP."
"A number of industries are experiencing spiraling growth in data services.
They are now looking for new ways to source technology and avoid upfront
costs. Sify's new cloud service will enable our customers to source
IT-as-a-Service without compromising on performance, security and control,"
said P J Nath, Executive President, Enterprise Business, Sify. "HP's
technology delivers a highly resilient and elastic computing infrastructure
that will enable Sify to deploy computing resources in the scale and
durations dictated by our customers".
He added, "The launch of our On-Demand Hosting Services is a momentous
beginning as it integrates Sify's expertise in data center, network,
security, enterprise applications and professional support services and gives
unique advantage to our enterprise customers to leverage fully integrated
Cloud infrastructures under single window solution"
"Customers are looking at cloud technologies to minimize cost, improve
efficiency and be adaptive to market changes," said Som Satsangi, Director,
Enterprise Server, Storage and Networking, HP India. "Using converged
Infrastructure, Sify is able to deliver a highly scalable and expandable
cloud platform that significantly reduces the time and cost of deploying new
IT services. Sify's customers will be able to scale up or down resources by
leveraging the full potential of virtualization, cloud and intelligent
management in the converged infrastructure."
As part of the agreement HP and Sify will also leverage their network to
promote these services in the SMB segment. Sify will also leverage HP's
network of ISV partners to offer applications on the cloud model.

brite-View's 'HDelight' Will Wirelessly Transmit Uncompressed 1080p Digital Content from PC to TV at San Francisco's Netbook Summit
Turn Any PC with HDMI Ports into HTPC and Wirelessly Stream Netflix and Hulu to Any HDTV
SAN JOSE, Calif., May 20 -- brite-View's HDelight (BV-1222), a 1080p wireless PC-to-TV transmission kit, will help users finally achieve the dream of enjoying all digital content from the Internet, a computer hard drive, game machine or home network on HDTV. brite-View will display the HDelight at the WHDI(TM) (Wireless Home Digital Interface(TM)) booth (#303) at San Francisco's Netbook Summit on May 24-25, 2010. The HDelight will officially launch in July 2010, and the price is expected to be under $200.
The first solution of its kind, the HDelight is not limited to use with specific PC or HDTV models. Provided the PC and HDTV have HDMI ports, the HDelight can air bridge the two and transmit uncompressed, 1080p high-definition content from computer to TV with no noticeable latency. brite-View is targeting later in 2010 for the release of another multi-room solution, which will be fully compatible with the WHDI standard.
Featuring AMIMON's wireless module (the technology that is the foundation of the WHDI standard), brite-View's HDelight is an affordable and flexible 1080p wireless PC-to-TV transmission kit. Users simply connect the HDelight's transmitter to their PC's HDMI port, and the receiver to the TV's HDMI jack. Consumers are then free to enjoy content from any source, not just the traditional set-top box or DVD player. The market responded well to the brite-View Air HD (BV-2500), and the new HDelight kit will build on that success.
"brite-View products are user-friendly, affordable and feature the most advanced technology," said Robert Lo, CEO of Xpike Innovations, which owns the brite-View brand. "The HDelight lets users enjoy online entertainment on the big screen. This will be a whole new experience for PC users, especially since Netflix will soon begin streaming 720p HD content."
The HDelight is ideal for three major uses:
-- Entertainment: Wirelessly streams Hulu, Netflix and YouTube, and has a
no-latency feature that will give gamers the "rush" of experiencing PC
gaming on a large-screen TV.
-- Communication: With Skype installed on the computer, HDelight brings
Skype's recently launched five-way video conferencing to larger
displays.
-- Information: Students of online education are no longer bound to the
computer screen. The HDelight enables better learning experiences on a
large-screen TV.
For those who cannot attend the Netbook Summit, brite-View has also released a YouTube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhzVo62ifjI) showing the HDelight in action, working seamlessly with the HDMI-ready PC and TV in a living room setting.

Whiskey Media Debuts Screened for Passionate Fans of Film, TV and Online Video
Media company's fifth web property delivers measureable brand engagement by combining original editorial content with social gaming mechanics
SAUSALITO, Calif., May 20 -- Social publisher Whiskey Media today announced the debut of its fifth property, Screened -- a new online destination dedicated to video entertainment across all screened devices. Screened, created by former CNET executives, joins Whiskey's four other category-leading properties -- Anime Vice, Giant Bomb, Comic Vine and Tested -- in combining original editorial content with social networking, game mechanics and wikis to create one of the most relevant and engaging film, TV and video destinations.
"We see our model as a new breed of media company, native to the Internet and not just an assimilation of content that many sites have done before. The Internet generation expects their media to be socialized and relevant to their lives," says co-founder and CEO Shelby Bonnie. "Social publishing attracts highly loyal, knowledgeable and motivated audiences and provides brands the opportunity for even deeper integrated engagement than currently available elsewhere online."
Screened is created by fans, for fans
Screened will simultaneously spark and settle debates, create and squash rumors, and stimulate engaging conversations. The site will also feature a comprehensive movie and TV database with detailed information about films, actors, directors and writers, as well as other content such as locations, characters, objects, cliches and more.
Screened is built for the savvy entertainment fan who will watch video content across multiple devices and different screens. For a generation who will consume video entertainment across phones, iPads and computers in addition to movie screens and TV screens, Screened will help people find the best in Hollywood blockbusters, independent and classic films, TV shows and online video entertainment that can be watched or streamed to screens both large and small.
"The beauty of Screened is that its content is governed by real people who are passionate about movies, TV and video, and want to share their enthusiasm and opinions with like-minded people," said Alex Navarro, general editor, Screened. "We're entertainment enthusiasts too, which is why we're so excited to create a dynamic community that we believe will be worthy of a discriminating audience's time."
Screened entertains and rewards with Quests
Like Whiskey's other properties, Screened will feature game mechanics, called Quests, incentivizing viewers to become active contributors and motivating communities to participate at the editorial-level of content creation. Quests incorporate features typical of online social games -- badges, points and scavenger hunts -- rewarding site users for creating new pages, starting a forum topic, cleaning up existing content or engaging with brand advertisers.
During a one-week preview of Screened for members of other Whiskey Media properties, the community completed more than 24,844 Quests that produced 20,000 movie entries, 200,000 actor and movie images and 1,500 genres. The average person who contributes content contributes 43 items and spends more than 11 minutes on the Screened site.
Beyond Screened, the community across the other four Whiskey Media sites has started more than one million Quests that have produced more than 7,500 new product reviews and product description pages since launch. Quests have been shown to increase page views and time spent on the site by more than 53 percent, providing increased opportunities for brand marketers to interact with Whiskey's loyal communities.
"Whiskey Media is in a unique position to deliver engagement for brands given its community-based approach and ability to integrate campaigns into its sites, enhancing the user experience, not disrupting it," said Brian Monahan, SVP, global lead social media, Universal McCann.
About Whiskey Media
Co-founded in 2007 by CNET co-founder Shelby Bonnie, Whiskey Media builds media brands for the Internet generation who expect their media experience to be socialized and relevant to them personally. Its vertically-focused, branded community sites -- Anime Vice, Giant Bomb, Comic Vine, Tested and Screened -- harness the power of the crowd to create content in a social environment. With the traditional publishing model in decline, Whiskey Media is a leader in the next generation of social publishing. The company is based in Sausalito, CA.

HAMPTON, Va., May 20 -- AT&T* today joined Communities In Schools (CIS) of Virginia, CIS of Hampton and Hampton City Schools to kick off its partnership with CIS' Performance Learning Center® in Hampton. The AT&T Foundation - the corporate philanthropy organization of AT&T - awarded a High School Success grant for $400,000 over four years to Communities In Schools of Virginia to help launch the new Performance Learning Center® (PLC) in Hampton and to open the second of three in Richmond. "I commend Communities In Schools of Virginia for its work with the Commonwealth's teachers, students, members of the community and companies like AT&T who invest in preparing the next generation of our workforce. CIS is an excellent example of a strong public/private partnership that is successful in helping our students succeed."
AT&T's competitive High School Success grants are part of the company's signature initiative, AT&T Aspire, which helps address high school success and workforce readiness.
"We're committed to working with the local community to give at-risk youth the resources they need to be successful in society and the job market," said J. Michael Schweder, President, AT&T Mid-Atlantic Region. "A lot of this work must be done with groups like Communities In Schools of Virginia and their affiliates who have the expertise to help kids graduate from high school."
"Last year, Virginia's CIS Performance Learning Centers added 101 graduates to the Commonwealth's roles, and nearly all of these students were slated to drop out," said Dr. Mark Emblidge, Founding Director of CIS of Virginia.
Communities In Schools surrounds students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. Gaussian 09 Software Ported to 64-bit Mac OS X Using PGI Compilers
Cross-platform development tools from The Portland Group speed migration of popular computational chemistry application
PORTLAND, Ore., May 20 -- The Portland Group®, a wholly-owned subsidiary of STMicroelectronics and leading supplier of compilers for high-performance computing (HPC), today announced that Gaussian, Inc., an ongoing collaboration of scientists and academic research groups throughout the world, used PGI compilers to port a version of its flagship Gaussian 09 product to Intel processor-based Macintosh computers running 64-bit versions of Mac OS X.
PGI develops and markets high-performance C/C++ and Fortran compilers and development tools that are widely used by engineers and scientists, and are designed to extract maximum performance from the latest multi-core processors from Intel and AMD. PGI® Workstation compilers and tools enable building, debugging and profiling of 64-bit multi-core applications on the latest generation of Macs based on processors from Intel and running the Mac OS X operating system.
"A large percentage of academic and government HPC users rely on Macbooks as their mobile computing solution," said Douglas Miles, director, The Portland Group. "Now that Gaussian 09 is available on Mac OS X as well as on Linux- and Windows-based systems, these HPC developers can use and work on Gaussian 09 anywhere, any time using optimizing PGI Fortran and C/C++ compilers & tools. The potential jump in productivity for these users is huge."
Gaussian 09 is the latest in the Gaussian series of electronic structure programs. It is used by chemists, chemical engineers, biochemists, physicists and others for research in established and emerging areas of chemical interest. It can be used to study molecules and reactions under a wide range of conditions, including those that produce both stable species and compounds which are difficult or impossible to observe experimentally, such as short-lived intermediates and transition structures.
"Because of Gaussian's position as one of the preeminent electronic-structures software programs, over the years we have ported it to nearly every HPC platform using nearly every compiler and tool chain available," said Dr. Michael Frisch, president of Gaussian, Inc. "When we have a choice, we prefer PGI. We have found their dependability and performance to be consistently first rate."
PGI® compilers are recognized in the HPC community for delivering world-class performance across a wide spectrum of applications and benchmarks, and they are referenced regularly as the industry standard for performance and reliability. PGI compilers and tools are used widely in high-performance computing, the field of technical computing engaged in the modeling and simulation of complex processes, such as ocean modeling, weather forecasting, seismic analysis, bioinformatics and other areas.

Innovative Suite of Interactive Educational Materials will Increase Affordability for Students
SAN DIEGO, May 20 -- Bridgepoint Education (NYSE: BPI), a provider of postsecondary education services, announced today the launch of Constellation, an innovative suite of interactive educational materials that will increase both the educational quality and affordability of an education for online students at its Ashford University.
Constellation's highly engaging Web-based course materials include both text and multimedia assets that were developed in cooperation with subject matter experts from across the country, as well as Ashford University faculty. Andrew Clark, Bridgepoint Education's chief executive officer, announced the launch during an Investor Day Conference at the company's San Diego headquarters.
"Investing in learning platforms to drive high quality educational results and positive student outcomes is fundamental to Bridgepoint Education and Ashford University. Innovation has always been at the heart of those investments, ever since our faculty and content experts first began designing course materials that enhance adult learning online.
"We're especially excited about Constellation, which takes student access, and affordability of content, to a new level," said Clark. Noting that competitors had attempted portable, interactive approaches, Clark said, "While many institutions offer electronic books and incorporate some of their digital assets into the learning management system, very few if any provide extensive access to all materials - including textbooks. Constellation does, and also distinguishes itself on several fronts.
"For example, primary and supplemental reading materials have been sourced and are owned by Bridgepoint Education. This allows the institution to provide highly mobile content and allows students to access materials through a variety of devices. In addition, ownership also allows the institution to give students the freedom to use materials in any way they wish; they can download to multiple devices, print without restriction, and keep for future reference. Finally, materials are aligned with Ashford University outcomes and take into account students' prior knowledge and experiential base."
Quality Curriculum
Given the close alignment of materials with Ashford University outcomes, a more relevant and comprehensive education experience is provided to students. Constellation also presents opportunities for tighter integration with Bridgepoint Education assessment tools, including Waypoint Outcomes' interactive assessment tools and surveys that develop rich data on student learning outcomes and help assure optimum online instruction for students. Waypoint Outcomes was acquired by Bridgepoint in 2009.
Technological Innovation
Constellation materials are displayed in a proprietary, browser-based reader developed and owned by Bridgepoint Education. The innovative Constellation Reader is included with the course materials and gives students an interactive web-based experience. It enables students to search and download multiple versions of the materials like PDF and ePub, and also creates highlights, notes and bookmarks. While full functionality is best enjoyed with the Constellation reader, students may also engage with the materials on a variety of devices, including web-enabled cell phones like the Blackberry and iPhone, as well as devices such as the Kindle and the new iPad.
Students are free to use their course materials in any way that works best for them. They can enjoy a full audio version of the materials, download materials to various devices, print them without restriction, keep them for future reference, or share the materials with colleagues.
Accessibility/Affordability
A cornerstone of Constellation is student affordability. Constellation materials replace third-party textbooks, which have typically cost online students $150 per course. With Constellation, the cost is expected to be cut in half to approximately $75. Initially, Constellation will be provided in ten Ashford University general education courses and ultimately will include core courses in approximately 80 percent of degree programs over the next two to three years.
Constellation officially launched on April 29 and is currently available to new students who enroll in Ashford University's online programs. Both the Constellation Reader and proprietary content are owned by Bridgepoint Education, Inc.
"Constellation ties directly to our institution's mission to provide affordable, accessible and the highest quality learning platforms that enhance the student experience," said Clark. "Constellation is a strong addition to our robust, four-pillar student value proposition - affordability, access, transferability and heritage. As we move forward and Constellation expands to increasing numbers of students, we are continuing to demonstrate that innovation brings our students the very best educational value in the postsecondary sector."
About Bridgepoint Education
Bridgepoint Education's postsecondary education services focus on offering associate's, bachelor's, master's and doctoral programs in such disciplines as business, education, psychology, social sciences and health sciences. Bridgepoint Education's regionally accredited academic institutions - Ashford University and University of the Rockies - deliver their programs online as well as at traditional campuses located in Clinton, Iowa, and Colorado Springs, Colorado and are accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (http://www.ncahlc.org). DALLAS, May 19 -- Zimusoft, Inc. has created a product to build a bridge between Windows and the iPhone: DragonFireSDK.com (SDK: Software Development Kit). For the first time, Windows developers can fully code and debug iPhone Apps without ever leaving Windows.
Apple published an SDK for the iPhone, but it only runs on a Mac and it requires programmers to learn a variant of the C/C++ language called Objective-C. Of the 5 million programmers worldwide, over 80% work in Windows and do not know Objective-C. With DragonFireSDK, C/C++ programmers can develop for the iPhone using the Windows computer they already own and the language they already understand.
The DragonFireSDK product consists of a cross-platform Library and an iPhone Simulator. Windows programmers see an on-screen iPhone Simulator running their code. When the App is complete, an App Bundle is prepared that will run on the iPhone and is ready for submission to the Apple iPhone App Store. Games made in Windows with DragonFireSDK are already being shipped.
DragonFireSDK costs only $99.95. Many Windows programmers will pick it up and create a small game in a weekend. High schools and colleges are excited about filling "Introduction to Programming" classes that teach how to write a game for the iPhone. The Library of functions will allow programmers to easily create the kind of leisure games iPhone users enjoy while waiting for their coffee at Starbucks. Popular maze games like PacMan as well as side scroll games like Nintendo Mario Bros can be created using DragonFireSDK.
Clint Brock, Zimusoft's DragonFireSDK Product Champion said, "We understand that there are thousands of programmers who would enjoy entering the iPhone digital playground. We also know that they have day jobs programming in Windows and would prefer a solution that they can enjoy this weekend - not after weeks of learning Objective-C and spending thousands of dollars to buy a Mac."
Apple has been supportive of DragonFireSDK apps made in Windows. The bridge from Windows to iPhone simply enables more people to cross over. Apple rejected Adobe Flash because they failed to use one of the 3 approved languages for the iPhone: 1) Objective-C; 2) C; 3) C++. DragonFireSDK supports both C and C++. "Apple has been criticized for their restrictions, but they have not excluded us, nor have they excluded cross-platform tools such as OpenGL and OpenAudio. We love the iPhone and we are not only on the band wagon, we are behind it pushing!" [Dave Edwards, Zimusoft CEO]
The team at Zimusoft.com is comprised of specialists in creating mobile simulators, having previously created Windows Simulators of Nokia and Samsung phones. The company name, Zimusoft, is derived from the word Simulator. Edwards concluded, "We are thrilled to find such a great use for our mobile simulator technology. The interest in our Windows iPhone Simulator and software developer's kit far exceeds any previous mobile platform."

Denver Software QA Company Reinvents Load and Performance Testing
DENVER, May 19 -- ProtoTest, Denver's quality assurance gurus, have just announced the launch of LoadLabs -- the first and only flat-rate load and performance testing solution (http://www.LoadLabs.com). LoadLabs represents a completely new way to think about load and performance testing.
"Now, website and online application developers have a real alternative to companies and consultants that don't offer upfront pricing. So far, that type of fixed-cost solution hasn't existed. We saw a huge opportunity to create an affordable solution, and we jumped on it," said Lawrence Nuanez, one of the developers of LoadLabs.
LoadLabs takes the hassle of load testing off your plate and helps deliver improved online app and website performance in the most cost-effective way possible. Other load test services offer price "estimates," which create a significant barrier to determining the cost-effectiveness of a test. With LoadLabs, that variable has been eliminated.
Tests are done in about a week, and reports provide both top-line and highly detailed information. Retests are also included, so you can make sure your sites and apps work the way they are supposed to before they go live.
"Having detailed results within a week without buying expensive software, and having additional staff at this price point, is simply amazing," said David Barclay, LoadLabs customer and Director of Technology at Medical Media Holdings.
Shreveport innovator continues to address the demands of business.
SHREVEPORT, La., May 19 -- Celebrating their 5th year of innovation, ArcMail Technology is marking this milestone by announcing a departure from how the category charges for email archiving and management solutions. For a 60-day market trial, ArcMail will provide their industry leading, award-winning appliance at no cost with a three year or five year, worry free archiving engagement. Also announced are price reductions for all ArcMail appliances.
"We listened to industry experts, current customers and other smart people looking to purchase a locally hosted email management solution. They told us that the industry hadn't gotten pricing quite right," shared Chief Executive Officer, Todd Gates. "So this isn't a matter of burying the appliance cost elsewhere in pricing, this is addressing the marketplace demand for lower implementation cost of on-site archiving solutions in exchange for longer, worry free relationships. The durability of our products and quality of our customer service puts us in a position to address that demand."
Unlike competitors who require the customer to purchase product support as a condition of owning their hardware, ArcMail chooses to reward customers who purchase extended product support with a cost free appliance. The otherwise modest CEO, W. Todd Gates shared, "ArcMail is routinely recognized by industry analysts and users alike as the industry leader in features, performance and customer support, innovating pricing was a natural next step." New five year options for hardware and software support are available and instant hardware replacement options now provide the customer with an immediate replacement for ArcMail products in the unlikely event your appliance is damaged or destroyed through no fault of your own.
ArcMail credits the reduced pricing and free appliance offering to increased efficiencies in the manufacturing process, improvements in its proprietary firmware, and a streamlined development process. ArcMail VP of Product Development Norman Graham adds, "Our solution is the best engineered in the industry. New efficiencies in our operations, development, and fabrication phases gave us the ability to pass additional savings to our customer." Major new features include a reengineered operating system and database structure enabling triple digit increases in indexing speeds and functionality enhancements such as Retention Policies, Litigation Holds, and new user interface. While the company is open to making this a permanent move, reaction from customers will ultimately determine that. For now, ArcMail remains open to feedback and will continue to address market needs with ongoing product development and innovations like these.
About ArcMail Technology ArcMail is a leading provider of simple, secure and cost-effective email archiving and management solutions. Honored with Network Products Guide Product Innovation Award, ArcMail helps companies and public sector organizations better utilize their email and satisfy regulatory requirements. With the rapid growth of email usage, the Shreveport, LA-based company addresses a need for simple, secure email archiving that is affordable for small businesses yet robust enough to handle demands of enterprise companies and government entities.

Verizon Business Helps Oregon Agency Respond More Quickly to Callers Seeking Unemployment Benefits
Project Includes Contact Center Services and New IP System
SALEM, Ore., May 19 -- Verizon Business has implemented a new customer-contact solution at the Oregon Employment Department to help it respond more quickly and cost-effectively to the more than 100,000 calls it receives each month from residents seeking unemployment benefits.
In a nine-month project, Verizon Business contact center consultants worked closely with the department to ensure its transition from time-division multiplexing (TDM) to Internet protocol was delivered according to the department's requirements, on time and without interruption to customer care.
"With unemployment at around 10 percent, we've seen an increase in call volumes and the amount of time our callers were spending on hold," said Tom Byerley, unemployment insurance administrator for the Oregon Employment Department. "By replacing three systems that were reaching their end of life with a modern, centralized voice-over-IP solution implemented by Verizon, we've been able to improve our response rates while controlling our overall communications costs."
The new IP-based unified communications and collaboration (UC&C) solutions include Cisco Unified Contact Center Enterprise, Cisco Unified Communications Manager and Cisco Unified Customer Voice Portal - and provide Interactive Voice Response capabilities with touch-tone commands to enable call transfers to the appropriate agent for handling. By transitioning to the new IP-based platform, the agency can quickly and easily increase the number of call center agents in an immediate response to a surge in calls.
"We have found that organizations adopting progressively more advanced unified communications and collaboration tools can transform business performance, and VoIP can be an important first step for an agency embarking on a UC&C strategy," said Bruce Rosen, vice president for sales for Verizon Business. "By deploying IP, we are helping the Oregon Employment Department modernize its operations while improving the customer experience for its constituents."
Verizon Business is a leader in providing government agencies of all sizes one-stop shopping for their communications and IT needs.
