IBM Helps Media and Entertainment Industry Meet the Challenges of Delivering Content in the Digital Age
New IBM Software Platform meets the demands of increasingly interconnected marketplace
ARMONK, N.Y., April 12 -- IBM (NYSE:IBM) today unveiled a new software platform designed to transform the way media and entertainment companies develop, distribute and market content to an increasingly mobile and interconnected audience. In the process, IBM is helping these companies deliver everything from news, music and movies to advertising and TV programming faster, with better quality and greater cost efficiency.
Consumers worldwide are adopting new multimedia devices at an accelerating pace. A recent IBM study showed that nearly a third of consumers now own a smartphone, while 58 percent own an HDTV and 45 percent a portable video player. Coupled with an ever-growing volume of media content is an impatient audience that wants instant access to everything. For example, the study showed that more than 40 percent of consumers want the ability to share content between devices -- porting a movie from a PC to a handheld device, for example. Faced with these facts, the media industry is conforming to a new reality: how to efficiently, securely and cost effectively produce and distribute assets and services both inside and outside of their organizations.
The new IBM Media Enterprise Framework is a customized platform that enables the combination of IBM software with that of independent software developers who build unique applications that address particular issues for clients. The combined offerings address every aspect of a media enterprise -- from content production and distribution to sales and services, marketing and business systems. This gives companies the ability to automate tasks that were previously done manually while reusing and optimizing their existing IT infrastructures to respond more nimbly and thrive in an increasingly complex consumer marketplace.
The new framework builds upon decades of IBM experience working with media and entertainment industry clients such as the BBC, one of the largest broadcasting organizations in the world, and Trinity Mirror plc, one of the UK's largest newspaper publishers; as well as the ProSeibenSat1 Group one of the largest media companies in Europe which is tapping the capabilities of the IBM Media Enterprise Framework as part of its pan-European digital platform to enable the delivery of TV programming to multiple platforms.
Framework Supports Five Key Business Areas in Media and Entertainment
The new framework addresses the challenges to the five industry business domains unique to the media and entertainment industry. These business domains include: Content Production, Content Distribution, Sales and Service, Marketing, and Business Systems.
Within each of these business domains, the IBM Media Enterprise Framework is designed to help media and entertainment companies immediately embrace the most current methods of content development and distribution, including support for the electronic devices that bring this content alive for audiences, and all of the business processes and requirements that support these transactions. It is also designed as a dynamic infrastructure that can easily adapt as these methods and devices change. Centered on the five key capabilities required by almost every media and entertainment company, these new technologies include:
- Multi-channel enablement: Delivering a personalized customer experience and creating new revenue generating opportunities with a broad spectrum of multi-channel focused application solutions including visual design, user experience and complex application development.
- Business process transformation: Optimizing the production and distribution workflow (orchestration and automation) of digital media content throughout an enterprise, creating a flexible 'media aware' infrastructure.
- Business analytics and optimization: Integrating data providers and in-house sources to reveal timely and actionable business insights to enhance decision making about market pursuits, packaging and pricing offers and operational efficiencies and effectiveness.
- Media, metadata & information management: Helping clients to capture, manage, store, preserve and deliver data and unstructured content, establishing a holistic and trusted view of information regarding media assets and intellectual property across the enterprise.
- Infrastructure Management & Security: Secures and optimizes performance across all assets, networks, systems and channels.
"IBM has extensive experience working with media and entertainment industry clients from around the globe to enhance their production and distribution processes and to integrate and optimize their business support systems," said Steven Canepa, IBM General Manager for Global Media and Entertainment Industry. "We are bringing that expertise to a comprehensive integrated framework that provides clients the agility they need to succeed in today's dynamic media marketplace."
The IBM Media Enterprise Framework is the software technology backbone that makes a wide range of media and entertainment solutions possible by helping clients to build an integrated platform for all of their operations based on industry standards. This new framework utilizes elements of IBM's entire software portfolio including WebSphere, Rational, Tivoli, Lotus and Information Management products while leveraging the full range of IBM server and storage products and the industry-specific offerings and consulting expertise of IBM Global Business Services. Additionally, it supports the broad set of independent Software Vendors that address specific application requirements.
Today's announcement represents another addition to IBM's leading portfolio of industry solutions and frameworks. Industry frameworks provide a configurable platform to accelerate deployment of business solutions. They extend IBM's service oriented architecture (SOA) middleware with industry-specific capabilities and specially designed process templates. IBM industry solutions and industry ISV solutions build on the value provided by these industry frameworks to deliver a unique, end-to-end solution for each client.

- Ford is hosting a casting call to find the most unique and stylish individuals to represent the 2011 Ford Fiesta for an "Inspired By Color" program which takes place this week on Howard University's campus in Washington, D.C. - Five individuals will be selected and will appear in a national advertisement for the Fiesta which will hit TV screens this Spring - R&B Singer LeToya Luckett, eBay Style Director Constance White, Fashion Innovator and Parrish Clothing Founder Tony Shellman and Ford Fiesta Designer Kevin George to serve as official judges for the program along with Event Host Kenny Burns - The Fiesta goes on sale this summer and features an expressive, vibrant design, sharp reflexes, and a global track record that will redefine U.S. small car customers' expectations
WASHINGTON, April 12 -- Imagine using a vehicle that comes in colors like Lime Squeeze, Bright Magenta, Red Candy and Yellow Blaze as your inspiration while getting dressed. Imagine if your personal style and your understanding of the vehicle could land you in one of Ford Motor Company's upcoming national television spots.
Ford is offering the chance for five unique and stylish individuals to do just that as the company kicks off Inspired By Color, a casting call event tied to the 2011 Ford Fiesta that will take place on Howard University's campus this week in Washington, D.C.
Inspired By Color invites participants to let the fresh design and colors of the new Fiesta inspire them as they show off their unique style while tying it back to the colors and distinct features of the Fiesta. Participants will show up to Day One of the casting call where they will flex their style muscle for the chance to be one of 30 individuals selected for Day Two of the casting call event. Ultimately, five finalists will be selected by a panel of judges that will include R&B Singer LeToya Luckett; Fashion Powerhouse and eBay Style Director Constance White; Fashion Innovator and Parrish Clothing Founder Tony Shellman and Fiesta Designer Kevin George.
We wanted to create a unique program that truly embodies the spirit of the Fiesta, said Crystal Worthem, multicultural marketing manager, Ford Motor Company. This program allows us to tap into the distinct features and style of the vehicle in a way that is relevant to some of the target consumers of this vehicle. We are excited about the opportunity to hold such a massive casting call in a city that speaks fashion, while also bringing along some of the experts in the field of fashion to help us execute the program.
A mixture of local radio, targeted online/mobile, posters and street teams were deployed in order to create awareness and buzz around the "Inspired By Color" casting call. Potential participants were then directed to http://www.fordurban.com where they had to view the car, including some of its class-leading technologies and features and then select the color that inspired them the most. Once they've chosen a color, they will wear an outfit they've been inspired to put together to the casting call.
In addition to the panel of celebrity judges, a team of "Fashionistas," which includes Project Runway Star Michael Knight will comb the line of attendees to select individuals to provide sound bytes live from the event.
The program will also include a custom interactive eZine entitled Inspired By Color that will launch following the campaign and will recap the entire program with additional issues to follow leading up to and immediately after the 2010 BET Awards.
The event will take place April 13-15 on Howard University's campus, Undergraduate Library Rooftop. Pre-Registration is now closed but limited walk-ups are available on April 13.
Thanks to the success of the Fiesta Movement social media initiative - which has generated more than 6.2 million YouTube views, more than 750,000 Flickr views and nearly 4 million Twitter impressions - more than 100,000 people have already expressed an interest in the 2011 Ford Fiesta.
Going on sale this summer, the all-new Fiesta features an expressive, vibrant design, sharp reflexes, and a global track record that will redefine U.S. small car customers' expectations. Featuring class-leading technologies and a projected best-in-class highway fuel economy of 40 mpg, Fiesta brings efficiency and convenience together in one package.
It's also designed to be versatile, personal and adaptable. In fact, Fiesta is expected to deliver best-in-class convenience and connectivity with the segment-exclusive SYNC® voice-activated communications system, as well as an expressive color palette and available graphics.

Harris Corporation and LG Electronics Demonstrate Scalable Full-Channel Mobile DTV Technology
Flexible Spectrum Option Delivers Even More Over-the-Air Mobile TV Programs Than Possible with Traditional Mobile DTV Broadcasting
LAS VEGAS, April 12 -- With an eye on the future for spectrum owners interested in reaching millions of mobile TV viewers, Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS) today took the wraps off its latest technological innovation developed with LG Electronics -- mobile digital television delivered in "Scalable Full-Channel Mobile Mode." The demonstration features functioning hardware for both transmission and reception of mobile DTV signals using enhanced technology.
The new system enables as many as 16 different video programs to be sent in the same 6 MHz bandwidth utilized by a TV broadcaster. It has been proposed for standardization to the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) and is being unveiled this week at the 2010 National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) convention.
Current TV broadcasters are required by the Federal Communications Commission to offer at least one standard-definition digital TV program in their 19.4 Mbps broadcast bitstream. Owners of other 700 MHz spectrum, however, have more flexibility. The Harris/LG demonstration will show spectrum owners and all terrestrial broadcasters how to maximize spectrum use with a greater variety of TV programs to reach mobile viewers "on the go" as viewing habits change.
This demonstration can be seen in the ATSC-OMVC Mobile Digital TV Pavilion (Booth SU5217A, South Hall, Las Vegas Convention Center) during the entire 2010 NAB Show.
Multiple Mobile Programs on One Channel
To achieve its robust approach to Scalable Full-Channel Mobile Mode, LG and Harris engineers have trimmed the main digital program to enable a mere trickle of data -- enough to advertise available mobile programs on the service to in-home viewers. Most of the 19.4 Mbps bitstream in the 6 MHz TV channel is then cleared for transmission of various mobile programs, which can all be beamed from the same broadcast infrastructure.
"We realize there are applications for digital broadcasting that go far beyond the services transmitted by TV stations," said Dr. Jong Kim, president of LG Electronics' U.S. R&D lab. "Companies that own 700 MHz spectrum are beginning to ask how they might put the power of ATSC mobile digital broadcasting to use, and we're responding by creating a new method of utilizing digital transmission to transmit even more programs. With our Scalable Full-Channel Mobile Mode system, we can offer multiple programs for mobile devices and a 'barker program' that can be seen by in-home viewers."
The LG-Harris Scalable Full-Channel Mobile Mode is designed to be compatible with the ATSC A/153 Mobile DTV Standard adopted by the ATSC last October. It will offer non-traditional broadcasters an effective way to reach millions of mobile, portable and handheld devices.
"LG is committed to providing reception chips to equip receiving devices for Scalable Full-Channel Mobile Mode within four months of standard adoption," Dr. Kim said. "Co-developed by LG, Zenith and Harris, this technology shows how Mobile DTV can be applied to help non-traditional broadcasters reach the viewing public. We're using commercially available Harris transmission equipment and LG Mobile Digital TV receivers -- such as portable TVs, netbook computers and prototype mobile phones -- to show how spectrum owners might offer multiple programs of diversified content."
Significant Progress Toward Commercialization
While the demonstration is a prototype, "the finished product will require nothing more than a software upgrade" for Harris Mobile DTV equipment owners, according to Jay Adrick, vice president of broadcast technology for Harris Corporation.
"We're already working with a customer, and there are others operating in the 700 MHz spectrum who plan to launch mobile services that are compatible with the ATSC transmission system," Adrick said. "We believe that Scalable Full-Channel Mobile Mode transmission will come to market rather quickly, once it is standardized. These are changing times for broadcasters, and they need every tool that they can get to be competitive and to move toward the types of services that people want in the future."
"This is an extension of the ATSC A/153 Mobile DTV standard, so there's a lot of commonality with what broadcasters are already planning to do," Adrick added. "To achieve the Scalable Full-Channel Mobile Mode, there are, however, some significant changes in coding rate and in the block formats that are used to generate the various segments of the mobile signal."
The technology developed by Harris, LG and Zenith is a leading contender in the ATSC Scalable Full-Channel Mobile Mode standardization process. An ATSC "Candidate Standard" could be adopted in the next several months.

Company to Invest $6 Million for More High-Speed Capacity in Indianapolis Area
INDIANAPOLIS, April 12 -- Verizon Wireless will spend $16.8 million in 2010 specifically to add more capacity to its advanced high-speed 3G network in Indiana, with $6 million of that amount dedicated to the greater Indianapolis area.
The statewide enhancements will ensure that Verizon Wireless customers can continue using their wireless devices to access the Internet, view high-quality videos, download music, games and ringtones, and send and receive email.
This $16.8 million capacity-improvement project is part of the company's overall $57.4 million investment planned for its Indiana network this year, which will also include building several new cell sites, among other initiatives. The project entails installing equipment on hundreds of cell sites across Indiana, thereby increasing data capacity of the network across the state and, specifically, by as much as 40 percent in the Indianapolis area.

New Product Delivers Full Features of Flash-Inclusive Websites to Mobile Phones, PDAs and Computers
DETROIT, April 12 -- IntelliTouch Digital Solutions (http://www.IntelliTouchdigital.com) announces the exclusive release of the Ripple Conversion Engine(TM), designed to run Flash-programmed content on Internet-enabled mobile devices in virtually any browser.
Thousands of companies currently require that mobile devices support Flash video for users to fully experience all features of their Flash-inclusive websites; however, many don't. The Ripple Conversion Engine(TM) allows today's mobile internet audience the ability to bridge this major gap in website accessibility, regardless of the mobile device they use.
The expense of redesigning websites into device-specific versions is daunting. The introduction of the iPad, iPhone and other mobile devices that do not support Flash requires that companies rebuild Flash-inclusive websites or risk being ignored by users of those devices. These users often represent a tech-savvy audience of proven trend-setters and early-adopters. To allow a sub-standard website to be your company's calling card to these mobile Internet surfers is marketing poison.
"The Ripple Conversion Engine(TM) can be used to process all Flash programming platforms," says Larry Bloom, President of IntelliTouch Digital Solutions. "No matter the size of your company, IntelliTouch can provide the simplest and most cost effective path to delivering your Flash-inclusive website to mobile-Internet users."
"Today's most influential group of consumers includes those with the newest devices that employ the latest software," says Jeffrey Olszewski, IntelliTouch Digital Solutions V.P. of Sales and Marketing. "The Ripple Conversion Engine(TM) takes all the features of your company website straight to them." Jeffrey adds, "IntelliTouch Digital Solutions can provide all websites, even those with the most dynamic graphics, barrier-free access to this influential audience. For many companies, the Ripple Conversion Engine(TM) will be the difference between reaching this audience and being left behind."
IntelliTouch Digital Solutions is scheduling viewings of the Ripple Conversion Engine(TM), by appointment only. Please contact IntelliTouch directly at (866) 881-0646 to schedule an appointment.

Phitek Systems Announces Agreement with STMicroelectronics
STMicroelectronics selected as strategic development partner and supplier for state-of-the-art active ambient noise-cancellation device
LAUSANNE, Switzerland, April 12 -- Phitek Systems Limited, the global leader in electro-acoustic technologies, announced today that it has selected semiconductor heavyweight STMicroelectronics (ST) as strategic partner in the design and supply of next-generation ANR(TM) Controllers.
ANR(TM) Controllers connect to Phitek's ANR(TM) electro-acoustic capsules to provide a complete and best-in-class active noise cancellation solution for use in audio accessory products such as headphones, headsets and earphones.
Mark Donaldson, CEO of Phitek Systems, says the company's thrilled to partner with ST, a recognised leader in semiconductor technology, and sees real benefits for its business and markets.
"In order to deliver world-first technology, Phitek needs to partner with the right expertise and production systems. In ST, we have a partner with long-term leadership in the design and production of high-performance semiconductors - it's a perfect match."
The first programme concerns the development of Phitek's PH1026 ANR Controller, an advanced digitally programmable device that provides enthralling audio-reproduction combined with superior active noise cancellation performance optimised for music and voice applications.
"Phitek's PH1026 ANR Controller represents a fully-integrated and configurable platform for active noise cancellation. High levels of integration allow us to deliver a feature-rich and compact solution with an extremely low external part count. This platform can be used across the complete range of audio accessories, offering faster time-to-market at reduced cost," says Donaldson.
Phitek ANR(TM) uniquely offers a complete and simple-to-execute semiconductor and electro-acoustic solution to active noise cancellation. ANR Controller ASICs (Application Specific Integrated Circuits) connect directly to Phitek's ANR(TM) Capsules, which encapsulate the electro-acoustic science necessary to deliver pre-qualified performance out-of-the-box.
Raising the bar higher, the PH1026 is digitally-configurable, delivering a single hardware platform applicable to a wide range of accessory products. Additionally, the PH1026 integrates the peripheral circuitry required in application, reducing part count and providing significant cost savings over competitive solutions.
Phitek expects the new devices to be popular with leading Mobile Music OEMs.
"Our customers require pre-qualified noise cancellation solutions that simplify engineering, manufacturing and time-to-market. This single device can be used with any of our headphone or earphone ANR Capsules to create a noise cancellation accessory with guaranteed performance," says Dr Ben Skelton, General Manager of Phitek's Component Technologies Business Unit.
Andrea Onetti, Audio Division General Manager at STMicroelectronics, remarks on ST's contribution in silicon design and production.
"ST has developed an internationally recognised wealth of complex, high-performance semiconductor design expertise. We're able to engineer this into the PH1026 to deliver a highly integrated device with exceptional quality, wide-band audio featuring high SNR, low THD and low noise within lowest possible power consumption and package size constraints."
Phitek plans to provide key accounts with samples of the PH1026 in September 2010, with first orders to ship in the new year.
Eager to maintain its reputation as the fast-time-to-market enabler, Phitek is already working with mobile OEMs to prepare their teams to apply this technology.
"We expect to hear a series of successful Mobile Music accessory, PH1026-based product launches, in 2011," says Skelton.
About Phitek Systems
Phitek Systems is the world's leading supplier of electro-acoustic technologies for audio enhancement and active noise cancellation. Focused on innovation and invention, Phitek provides global customers with creative solutions for effective reduction of ambient noise based on its patented Active Noise Rejection (ANR(TM)) technology.
Phitek ANR(TM) was originally developed for use in commercial passenger aircraft where background noise leads to hearing loss, fatigue and stress. Today, Phitek ANR(TM) is used by more than 50 airlines worldwide, servicing over 15 million passengers each year. The technology works by measuring noise inside the ear and calculating an "antinoise" response, which is sent to the headphone speaker. The noise and antinoise signals combine to yield near silence. Phitek ANR(TM) is effective at reducing background noise, and unlike alternatives, tunes its response to suit prevailing noise conditions.
Beyond aviation, Phitek ANR(TM) technology is utilized by leading brands in audio and mobile music and has been recognised by leading publications including Wired Magazine, PC Magazine and Macworld as "best-in-class." Phitek's impressive portfolio of patented solutions spans commercial aviation, consumer audio and mobile telephone segments in both in-ear, and on-ear formats. The company is a member of CSR's eXtension partner programme and is active in developing world first solutions for Bluetooth monaural and binaural applications.
Phitek is headquartered in Auckland, New Zealand, with offices in Hong Kong, Shenzhen, San Jose, Lausanne and Tokyo. For more information please visit http://www.phitek.com

Plaster Networks Supports Broadband Forum's TR-069 CPE WAN Management Protocol
Offers Service Providers Powerful Remote Management and Easy Administration of Powerline Network Adapters
MENLO PARK, Calif., April 12 -- Plaster Networks (http://www.plasternetworks.com) announces its support for Broadband Forum's TR-069 technical specification as part of the company's powerline Ethernet solution. Service providers can now take advantage of Plaster Networks advanced service for automated configuration, management, and provisioning of subscribers' home powerline networks through their existing ACS (automated configuration server).
TR-069 defines a communication protocol for the remote management of customer premise equipment - an important development for the faster deployment time and troubleshooting of home networks.
Plaster Networks Service enables a reliable, managed home network supporting a high-speed Ethernet connection in virtually any room in the house via existing electrical wiring. Plaster Networks provides remote management and diagnostics that can help service providers control support costs and reduce "truck rolls" associated with home network issues. Integration with ACS systems offers significant investment protection for existing OSS software to manage powerline adapters within the home. Visit http://www.plasternetworks.com/solutions-iptv.html.
Service providers can enable any existing HomePlug AV network for remote management by adding a Plaster Networks PLN3 unit, or swapping in a PLN3 unit for one of the existing adapters. This capability provides a simple, convenient way to manage an installed base of HomePlug AV adapters using TR-069.
"Over 30 service providers worldwide have deployed Atheros' HomePlug AV powerline technology for in-home distribution of IPTV services," said Todd Antes, Vice President of Marketing, Digital Home of Atheros Communications. "We expect Plaster Networks' TR-069 solution incorporating Atheros' INT6400 HPAV powerline technology will enhance the performance of IPTV networks to drive greater efficiencies for service providers."
"When 35% of service provider support calls are related to home networking issues, you know there is enormous upside for cable and IPTV operators to troubleshoot and diagnose remotely," comments Gary Schultz, President of San Jose, Calif.-based Multimedia Research Group. "The TR-069 standard is a critical step to making this a more common occurrence especially across the numerous devices being used in homes."
"Service Providers are growing increasingly dependent on a reliable home network to deliver advanced content such as IPTV services," comments Jeff Scroggin, CEO of Plaster Networks. "Plaster Networks provides service providers with the reliability they need in a home network, at the same time helping to dramatically reduce support costs through remote management and diagnostics. With our support for the TR-069 protocol, service providers can now integrate these remote management capabilities with their existing ACS software."
About Plaster Networks
Plaster Networks delivers on the full promise of powerline networking by providing a more reliable network for home multimedia applications, such as streaming video and IPTV, using existing AC wiring. Unlike other offerings, Plaster Networks provides an intelligent powerline adapter that includes a dedicated network processor for network management, configuration, diagnostics and troubleshooting. Plaster Networks offers a reliable alternative or extension to wireless networks and a more cost-effective alternate to installing Ethernet cables into walls.

ReadSpeaker Speech-Enables Corriere Website and iPhone App
HUIS TER HEIDE, The Netherlands, April 12, 2010-- VoiceCorp is pleased to announce that Corriere della Sera, the leading
Italian newspaper, has recently implemented ReadSpeaker Enterprise, a
web-based speech-enabling application to enhance the Corriere website reader
experience and increase the accessibility of Corriere web content for
everyone. This service allows Corriere website visitors to listen to articles
by clicking the "listen" button at the top of each article, without the need
for downloading and installing additional programs. To even further enhance
the reader experience, Corriere website visitors can also choose to activate
embedded highlighting, which enables them to see synchronized highlighting of
the text that is being read, on a word by word and/or sentence basis.
In addition to the website, Corriere has also speech-enabled their iPhone
app with the ReadSpeaker audioMob application. By simply clicking on the
listen button (headphones icon), which is an integral part of the iPhone app,
it will automatically start reading the text.
This new feature for the Corriere website will allow those otherwise
incapable of reading online content the ease of listening to Corriere
articles. For people that are on the go, that don't have enough time to read,
or prefer to listen to an article rather than reading it, the iPhone app
listen function is a new, useful way to access information. It overcomes the

Verizon Launches Comprehensive Sustainability Program to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Conserve Energy
Program Includes New Initiatives and Expansion of Existing Energy and Recycling Efforts That Have Reduced CO2 Emissions by More Than 793 Million Pounds
NEW YORK, April 12 -- To deliver on its commitment to find practical and innovative ways to reduce the carbon footprint of its global operations, Verizon has launched a comprehensive sustainability program consisting of a series of new initiatives and an expansion of existing efforts.
The initiatives and expansion range from significantly increasing the number of alternative vehicles in the company's fleet to conducting a trial of energy-efficient FiOS-TV set-top boxes to using more green products and services.
"Customer demand for Verizon's broadband and wireless technology is driving the growth of our high-IQ networks, but we're growing responsibly," said James Gowen, Verizon's chief sustainability officer. "We're partnering with other businesses, suppliers, employees and our customers to dramatically increase the sustainability of our supply chain and operations. This approach positions the company for growth in future markets while creating lasting social value."
Some of the initiatives Verizon is launching this year include:
-- Adding 1,600 alternative energy vehicles in the Verizon fleet in 2010.
Verizon is purchasing more than 1,100 alternative energy vehicles
including hybrid and compressed natural gas-powered aerial trucks and
vans, and hybrid pick-up trucks and sedans. The company will also
increase its use of biodiesel and flex-fuel (E85) to power 470
vehicles. A video explaining the benefits of hybrid aerial trucks and
how they're being used in New York is available at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5RDYkBnh7k.
-- Verizon has teamed up with Motorola to trial eco-friendly set-top
boxes for FiOS TV customers in select markets. The new QIP models use
significantly less energy than existing models. A DVR model will boast
increased digital video-recording storage capacity. Packaging for both
models will be 100 percent recyclable and made from 75 percent
recycled cardboard.
-- Kicked off a long-term awareness campaign to educate, encourage and
make it easy for Verizon's 220,000 employees to cut energy use,
recycle and reuse at work and home. Recent examples include free
electronic recycling days, open to the public, at various company
locations including the company's Operations Center in Basking Ridge,
N.J., (April 21) and its facility in Ashburn, Va. (April 21). All
materials collected during the campaign will be recycled or disposed
of in an environmentally responsible manner.
-- Verizon's IT, security, communications and network expertise are
helping the utility sector ramp up smart grid deployment. The
company's intelligent IP and wireless networks provide an ideal
foundation for the smart grid's control and metering functions.
In 2009, Verizon's aggressive energy reduction and recycling measures reduced the company's CO2 emissions by more than 793 million pounds, approximately the amount of CO2 emitted by 46,700 homes in a year. The company also improved its rate of emissions per million dollars in revenue to 60.2 metric tons of CO2 in 2009, from 64.4 metric tons in 2008.
In 2009 Verizon took several steps toward increasing the sustainability of the company. Examples include:
-- A new lab in Columbia, Md., for federal customers interested in
Optical LAN services and technology. Passive optical network
technology can reduce power consumption by up to 75 percent because it
requires no additional regeneration of power for up to 12 miles from a
campus data center.
-- Setting energy efficiency standards for the company's suppliers of
network equipment, resulting in saving 91 million kilowatt hours and
more than 114 million pounds of CO2 avoidance. In 2008, Verizon led
the industry by being the first company to establish energy efficiency
standards.
-- Handling millions of virtual meetings each month for customers, and
conducting virtual meetings between Verizon employees, customers,
partners and suppliers. The meetings include high-definition video
conferencing and immersive video, which makes participants feel as
though they are in the same room. By skipping the trip and meeting
virtually, Verizon employees avoided the equivalent of 8 million
pounds of CO2, which is like taking nearly 700 passenger cars off the
road for a year.
-- Monitoring building temperatures and installing energy-efficient
lighting, which reduced energy consumption by 84 million kilowatt
hours, enough energy to power 7,800 homes for a year. The company's
operations center in Basking Ridge, N.J., and two Verizon Wireless
stores earned the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED silver and gold
certifications, respectively.
-- Drivers of Verizon vehicles conserved 1.7 million gallons of fuel in
2009 as part of the company's continuing efforts to reduce engine
idling, the equivalent of taking 2,800 cars off the road for a year.
-- Encouraging business customers to opt for paperless billing from
Verizon. Each time a customer does so, Verizon donates money to the
American Forests' Global ReLeaf program, which replenishes trees in
the U.S. American Forests planted more than 70,000 trees in 2009,
through its partnership with Verizon.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., April 12 -- thredUP, the premier peer-to-peer online clothing exchange, today announced the launch of its much-anticipated service for kids clothing. thredUP kids is the place for America's busiest families to conveniently exchange kids clothing online.
The service aims to bring a new level of affordability, convenience and eco-consciousness to a highly fragmented, billion-dollar market for second-hand children's clothing. thredUP kids is designed to help parents easily swap clothes their kids have outgrown for great new items that fit. thredUP's best-in-class interface allows parents to exchange with their closest friends or with a national network of parents -- all from the convenience of home.
thredUP kids combines the best features of some of the most popular sites on the web: Like Netflix, parents can queue up a box of gently used clothes to receive. Then, similar to eBay, members build virtual boxes of clothing to exchange. Finally, like StubHub, thredUP enables, coordinates and manages the exchanges. The marketplace facilitates exact matches, ensures quality and remedies the lack of coordination that plagues offline clothing swaps. The service is a complete end-to-end solution for busy parents.
"Children grow out of clothes every 3-6 months, having worn outfits only a couple of times," said James Reinhart, Chief Knitwit of thredUP. "Currently parents are spending upwards of $20,000 on kids clothing by the time their child is 17. And they're retiring some 1,400 items! We've found that many 'swap, buy, sell' sites are not that enticing to busy parents. They are just too much work. thredUP is all about convenience."
The kids service launches on the heels of the popular men's and women's shirt-swapping site, which went live in October 2009. While this service already has 10,000 members, the team anticipates that thredUP kids will be an even bigger hit in the hand-me-down market.
"The initial feedback has been tremendous," said Oliver Lubin, Chief Design Knitwit. "In the first two weeks of a private beta launch we have over 1,500 excited parents signed-up to start swapping. Members seem to love the intuitive interface and overall thredUP experience."
The service launches invite-only today. For more information about thredUP kids visit: thredup.com
About the company
thredUP.com is the brainchild of co-founders James Reinhart, Oliver Lubin, and Chris Homer. Both Reinhart and Homer are recent graduates of the Harvard Business School and all three developed the idea in the Spring of 2009. The company is based in Cambridge, MA and is advised by current Netflix CEO Reed Hastings.

WHAT: "The Evolution of Data Collection for Gas Measurement"
Evolving communication technologies are revolutionizing SCADA
(Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems just as new
technology in drilling and production are revolutionizing the
way oil and gas wells are produced. In today's oil and gas
environment, production volumes are many times greater than they
were just 10 years ago. The price of these natural resources is
down significantly from where it was in 2008 so, for producers,
it has become increasingly more important to run more cost-
effective operations.
Today, more pre-planning and system design are necessary to
build an expandable, scalable communications network. These
systems are much more complex than the older systems but provide
far greater versatility and are far more robust than the systems
built 10 or 15 years ago.

Tampa Web Design Company Hosts Interactive Marketing Workshop, #ShinyObjects
TAMPA, Fla., April 12 -- Roger West Creative and Code, a Tampa website design company and interactive marketing agency is hosting an intensive two-hour workshop for marketing professionals and business owners.
In a quest to tackle the divide between marketing best practices and emerging Internet technologies, the event titled Beware of Shiny Objects will confront the hype surrounding social media marketing, web 2.0 strategies, augmented reality, and other trends. Lockheed Martin Completes First Live Tracking Exercise With New Multi-Mission, Open Architecture Aegis Signal Processor
MOORESTOWN, N.J., April 12 -- Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT) successfully identified and tracked numerous live targets for the first time using its new Multi-Mission Signal Processor (MMSP). The MMSP is intended to help combine next-generation Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense and Anti-Air Warfare capabilities in an open combat system architecture for the U.S. Navy.
"By combining the proven SPY-1 radar and Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense signal processing capability, we will provide cost-effective and space-efficient warfighting improvements for the U.S. Navy," said Allan Croly, director, Naval Radar Programs, for Lockheed Martin's Mission Systems and Sensors business unit.
The augmented Aegis system detected air tracks at the Navy's land-based test facility, the Vice Admiral James H. Doyle Combat Systems Engineering Development Site in New Jersey. Additional testing will occur throughout 2010. As part of the Aegis Modernization Program, MMSP is scheduled for installation on guided missile destroyers currently equipped with the Aegis Weapon System. The MMSP installations will begin in 2012.
The road to Aegis Open Architecture has included extensive systems engineering to reconfigure the Aegis system to allow frequent technology refreshes and the ready acceptance of capability upgrades, whether they are accomplished via new development or the integration of third-party-developed products.
The 92 Aegis-equipped ships currently in service around the globe have more than 950 years of at-sea operational experience and have launched more than 3,500 missiles in tests and real-world operations. In addition to the United States, Aegis is the maritime weapon system of choice for Australia, Japan, Norway, South Korea and Spain.
Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security company that employs about 140,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The corporation reported 2009 sales of $45.2 billion.
