Greenplum Debuts Greenplum Chorus, The First Commercial Enterprise Data Cloud Platform
Ushers in New Era of Enterprise Social Collaboration For Data, Analytics and Insights; Announces Latest Edition of Greenplum Database 4.0
LAS VEGAS, April 12 -- GREENPLUM DAYS -- Greenplum Software, the world's leading data infrastructure company, today introduced Greenplum Chorus(TM), the industry's first commercially available Enterprise Data Cloud(TM) platform. Greenplum Chorus's innovative self-service provisioning, data collaboration and data services features offer global organizations the opportunity to complement their traditional enterprise data warehouse (EDW) with a new class of software that empowers people within an enterprise to more easily collaborate and derive insight from their data.
Greenplum today also announced Greenplum Database 4.0, a major release of the company's high-performance database software. Greenplum Database 4.0 is the culmination of more than seven years of development and addresses the most rigorous data warehousing needs of the world's largest organizations. This release introduces the next generation of advanced workload management and self-healing fault tolerance capabilities, allowing it to comfortably power data warehouses and marts of any scale and complexity. Greenplum Database 4.0 also powers the databases provisioned by Greenplum Chorus.
"Today's announcements represent a true breakthrough in the way enterprises can manage and benefit from all of their data, and mark significant milestones in the evolution of our company," said Scott Yara, president and co-founder, Greenplum. "We've invested considerable resources and undertaken a tremendous effort to make our vision a reality, and today we have delivered on our promise with the revolutionary Greenplum Chorus Enterprise Data Cloud platform, and Greenplum Database 4.0, the world's most powerful analytic database."
The Greenplum Chorus EDC platform, and Greenplum Database 4.0 will be on display at the invitation-only Greenplum Days event taking place alongside the Gartner Business Intelligence Summit at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas, April 12-13.
Greenplum Chorus
Greenplum Chorus is a new class of software that empowers people within an enterprise to more easily collaborate and derive insight from their data. As the first commercial Enterprise Data Cloud platform, it provides the key services necessary for organizations wrestling with all data, big and small, structured and unstructured, to realize the benefits of private cloud computing techniques and social collaboration for enterprise data warehousing and analytics.
Chorus serves the needs of data analysts, IT and business executives with three core pillars of functionality.
-- Self-service provisioning of data marts and secure, controlled
sandboxes relieves IT of the management overhead and operational
complexity usually associated with data mart deployment.
-- Data services, allowing analysts to effortlessly discover, combine and
share useful datasets within and across data marts.
-- Data collaboration, providing rich social networking capabilities that
link data and data analysts to accelerate collaboration and insight.
"Greenplum is at the forefront of a market shift," said Tim O'Reilly, founder and CEO of O'Reilly Media and a Greenplum advisor. "It's a shift that is moving beyond hardware, software, and even the Internet. It's a shift about data. Big Data. Small Data. All Data. What Greenplum is delivering today will create new opportunities for enterprises to harness their data to improve how they operate, respond to customers, and create new products and services."
Greenplum Chorus is built for global scale, and is powered by the Greenplum Data Hypervisor(TM), a distributed cloud-scale execution framework that manages complex cross-database state, data movement and orchestration in a fault-tolerant and self-healing manner.
"Greenplum's EDC technology is driving a new era of safe, trusted sharing," said Scott McNealy, industry visionary and executive advisor to Greenplum. "Greenplum is breaking down the walls of the data warehouse with a wonderful, next-generation architecture that I think is very, very exciting and which could see very wide adoption in a very quick way."
Greenplum Database 4.0
Greenplum Database 4.0, a major release of Greenplum's industry leading massively-parallel (MPP) database product, is the culmination of more than seven years of development. Already regarded as the most scalable mission-critical analytical database and in use at more than 100 leading enterprises worldwide, the new release raises the bar with numerous powerful features and enhancements.
-- Dynamic Query Prioritization: Extends Greenplum's Advanced Workload
Management with patent pending technology providing continuous
real-time balancing of the resources of the entire cluster across all
running queries. Gives DBAs the controls they need to meet workload
SLAs in complex mixed workload environments.
-- Self-Healing Fault Tolerance: Traditional MPP database fault-tolerance
techniques were suitable for <100 servers, but TCO increased
dramatically beyond that scale. Greenplum's new fault-tolerance
capabilities provide intelligent fault-detection and fast online
differential recovery, lowering TCO and allowing cloud-scale systems
with the highest levels of availability.
-- Polymorphic Data Storage(TM) - MultiStorage/SSD Support: Greenplum
Database 3.3 introduced Polymorphic Data Storage(TM), including
tunable compression and support for both row- and column-oriented
storage within a database. With Greenplum Database 4.0, this is
extended to allow the placement of data on specific storage types such
as SSD media or NAS archival stores.
-- Analytics & Language Enhancements: Support for PL/Java, and optimized
C and Java function support for Greenplum MapReduce.
-- Performance Enhancements: A range of enhancements, including faster
single-row operations (select, update, insert & delete), and index
access methods for columnar and AO table types.
-- Health Monitoring & Alerting: Provides email and SNMP notification in
the case of any event needing IT attention
Other enhancements in Greenplum Database 4.0 include a fast parallel data-out capability, and a wide range of minor enhancements and optimizations.

3D Streaming Demonstration to Feature THX Media Director, Microsoft Silverlight and THX Certified Home Theater System
LAS VEGAS, April 12 -- NAB Show 2010 -- At the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), THX Ltd. and other partners will showcase the world's first live high-definition (HD) 3 dimensional (3D) streaming demonstration using Microsoft Silverlight, THX® Media Director(TM) and a complete THX Certified home theater system. THX® Media Director(TM) will be integrated with the 3D demonstration to enable home theater components to automatically configure and switch between 3D and 2 dimensional (2D) playback settings as content is streamed live.
The NAB demo will take place at the Microsoft booth # SL220 and will also showcase the capabilities of Level 3's global internet backbone, Silverlight and Internet Information Services (IIS) Smooth Streaming and Inlet Technologies' Spinnaker(TM) multi-screen real-time encoding solution. Film and TV production company, TVN GROUP, will provide live HD 3D content from its studio in Germany. The demo will show how content providers can use these technologies to capture and distribute 3D streaming content to TVs and other home entertainment devices.
"Microsoft has been on the forefront of game-changing entertainment technologies and we are pleased to team with them to integrate THX Media Director into Silverlight for this 3D streaming demonstration," said Rick Dean, senior vice president at THX Ltd. and chairman of the 3D@Home Consortium. Ernst & Young Releases Report on Emerging Entertainment Markets Brazil, Russia, India and China
Report released at April 14 National Association of Broadcasters panel on how media and entertainment companies can succeed in BRIC countries
NEW YORK, April 12 -- Ernst & Young today released a report on the media and entertainment landscape in the emerging markets of Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC). The report provides an overview of the latest indicators of market attractiveness, as well as the opportunities, challenges and critical success factors in conducting business in these four countries. Coinciding with the release of the report, Ernst & Young's Global Media & Entertainment Center is hosting a panel discussion on April 14 at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) conference in Las Vegas.
"Global media and entertainment companies are increasingly focusing on the role emerging markets play in content consumption and creation. Leading global companies that fail to understand and optimize the opportunities in emerging markets may lose out on significant revenue growth," said John Nendick, Global Media & Entertainment Leader for Ernst & Young.
The report, "Tune in to emerging entertainment markets: spotlight on Brazil, Russia, India and China," examines the industry landscape of individual emerging markets. Highlights include:
-- Corporate leaders are spending significant time assessing future
market opportunities in the BRIC countries though currently, some of
the largest media and entertainment companies generate less than 10%
of their global sales from BRIC economies.
-- The number of mobile subscribers in BRIC countries, which have a
combined GDP of US$8.7 trillion, exceed broadband, Internet and
television users, indicating huge potential for mobile entertainment.
-- Brazil is shifting from free broadcast television toward pay
television. When combined with the under-penetrated Internet market,
the country could become more attractive to global media and
entertainment companies.
-- Russian Internet users socialize more than many Western European
countries, creating new digital opportunities for domestic and foreign
media and entertainment companies.
-- In India, there is an increase in the number of channels and adoption
of digital distribution platforms; the country has also become a hot
bed for media content outsourcing and is the largest film-producing
nation in the world.
-- Satellite television subscribers in India, which currently account for
15% of the total 130 million television sets, are set to double in the
next 2 years.
-- Chinese youth are driving higher discretionary spending in
entertainment-related activities. As a result, China is experiencing a
growing purchasing power.
The critical success factors identified in the report include localizing content, thorough assessment of pricing and distribution channels, understanding regional nuances within each country, designing flexible business plans and mitigating business risks. The risks include local competition, fraud, corruption and piracy, ongoing structural and regulatory reforms and the development of corporate governance standards.
"The media and entertainment industry in India has been, and will continue to be, one of the biggest beneficiaries of India's favorable demographics," said Farokh Balsara, Media & Entertainment Leader, Ernst & Young Private Ltd. in India. "Volumes of content consumption, vibrant indigenous content creation and a favorable regulatory framework, make India an attractive investment destination for global media and entertainment companies."
The NAB panel hosted by Ernst & Young's Global Media & Entertainment Center will take place on Wednesday, April 14 from 9:00-10:30 a.m. PDT at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The session, called "Building with BRICs: How Media & Entertainment Companies Can Succeed In Brazil, Russia, India and China," will address how new opportunities bring new challenges, trends in advertising and subscription revenues and the future outlook.
John Nendick will moderate a panel discussion which includes Farokh Balsara; Fernando Bittencourt, General Director of Engineering, Globo TV Network; Chunguang Lu, President of China Television Corp., and Executive Vice President of China International Communications Co., Ltd.; Vladimir Pravdivy, Chief Financial Officer, ProfMedia; and Brian Wieser, Executive Vice President, Magna Global.

Optimum Lightpath and GetWellNetwork To Transform Patient Care Experience at The Children's Hospital At Montefiore
Bronx-based CHAM is First New York Metro Area Hospital to Implement Breakthrough Interactive Patient Care Solution To More Actively Engage Pediatric Patients And Their Families In The Care Process
JERICHO, N.Y., April 12 -- Optimum Lightpath®, a market leader in Ethernet-based communication solutions for New York metropolitan area businesses, today announced that through its exclusive relationship with GetWellNetwork, Inc, the leader in interactive patient care, it will supply Interactive Patient Care (IPC) to The Children's Hospital At Montefiore (CHAM).
CHAM will implement Interactive Patient Care in all 130 beds throughout the hospital at no cost to patients. The advanced patient care service, which will be deployed for the first time in the New York Metropolitan area, will empower the renowned children's hospital to improve entertainment, education, patient safety, clinical care outcomes, and bed turnover rates while creating new workflow efficiencies for hospital staff.
A New Era Of Patient Care
CHAM will roll out GetWell Town(TM), an innovative, pediatric version of GetWellNetwork's flagship Interactive Patient Care solution. GetWell Town will be powered by Optimum Lightpath's 100% fiber optic network and transform the hospital's in-room televisions into valuable tools for clinical teaching and entertainment. Using GetWell Town, patients and families will be able to learn more about their diagnosis, connect with friends using email and IM, and find out more about their caregivers. GetWell Town, which is uniquely designed for children, delivers exclusive health education content from KidsHealth® using interactive videos to improve patient education and engagement.
"CHAM currently delivers the most advanced medical care to its pediatric patients in metro New York. Interactive Patient Care will further distinguish Montefiore by dramatically enhancing the child's and family's experience of entertainment, education and clinical engagement," said Jack Wolf, Vice President and Chief Information Officer at Montefiore. "Optimum Lightpath has always offered Montefiore tremendous value and the most advanced technology. This is yet another example of how this long-standing relationship helps us keep our network and services on the cutting edge, delivering a significant positive impact on our ability to administer premium patient care."
Automated patient education is an integral component of the new service, and nurses will be able to order education programs specific to each patient and track its completion all from their current Electronic Health Record system. The deal expands Montefiore Medical Center's deep existing relationship with Optimum Lightpath, which has provided its communication services since 2001. Interactive Patient Care will be deployed throughout CHAM over a six-month period, which will see the patient care process transform as a result.
"Today, Optimum Lightpath works with more than 70% of hospitals in the New York metropolitan area, helping them to transform patient care," said Dave Pistacchio, President of Optimum Lightpath. "We are in tune with the unique needs of healthcare providers in our service area and our exclusive relationship with GetWellNetwork to deliver Interactive Patient Care represents our ability to provide significant value to our customers beyond traditional communication services. We are eager to begin working with CHAM to deliver a premium healthcare experience throughout the hospital. Further, as more of our healthcare customers move to deploy Interactive Patient Care, we are prepared to help them every step of the way."
Empowering Patients and Their Families
The IPC solution, GetWell Town, goes beyond entertainment to empower patients and their families to be more actively engaged in their care with interactive care plans exclusive to GetWellNetwork. Flexible and scalable, updates and new releases can be downloaded remotely to ensure fresh and current content and capabilities that meet the constantly evolving needs of the hospital.
In addition to providing significantly enhanced care opportunities, GetWell Town also provides patients with a variety of amenities, including Hollywood movies, games, Internet surfing and instant messaging. Parents are also given the option to exercise control of the entertainment content based on their preferences. In May 2009, Optimum Lightpath and GetWellNetwork signed an exclusive agreement to package Interactive Patient Care with its advanced business communications solutions, which run over the area's largest all-fiber metro Ethernet network.
"Hospitals are moving away from simple entertainment solutions on television and embracing the opportunity to provide patients with interactive learning tools that influence positive health outcomes while improving patient satisfaction," said Michael O'Neil, Jr., founder and Chief Executive Officer of GetWellNetwork, Inc. "As a result of our relationship with Optimum Lightpath, Montefiore has a powerful solution to help clinicians, the Child Life Department, educators and staff deliver a superior level of care."

Comcast to Launch Extreme 50 Mbps High-Speed Internet Service in Sacramento
Next-Generation DOCSIS 3.0 Rollout Now Complete in California and Speeds Doubled For Most Existing Customers New Wideband Speed Options Also Available to Business Customers
LIVERMORE, Calif., April 12 -- Comcast, one of the nation's leading providers of entertainment, information and communications products and services, today announced it is making the leap from broadband to wideband with the launch of next-generation DOCSIS 3.0 in the Sacramento area (see complete list of cities and areas below). The launch completes Comcast's rollout of the service in California. The company previously deployed wideband in the San Francisco Bay Area and several portions of the Central Valley, including Davis, Roseville and Placerville.
With wideband, Comcast has introduced a new echelon of Internet speed tiers, which will redefine the customer experience online and create a platform for Internet innovation in the years ahead. Comcast now offers some of the fastest speeds available in Central California, including the Extreme 50 tier with download speeds of up to 50 Mbps. Wideband also enables Comcast to double speeds for the majority of existing high-speed Internet customers.
Beginning today, Comcast's new internet services will be available to residential homes and businesses in all regions of Sacramento County, including: Antelope, Carmichael, Citrus Heights, Elk Grove, Elverta, Fair Oaks, Folsom, Galt, Gold River, Mather, North Highlands, Orangevale, Rancho Cordova, Rio Linda and Sacramento. Customers in these areas will soon be conducting business, surfing the web and playing online games even faster.
"Wideband utilizes our existing advanced fiber-optic network in neighborhoods across our footprint to dramatically enhance our customers' online experience," said Fred Walkover, Vice President of Comcast's Sacramento Area. "This new service will enable us to continue to offer our customers even faster speeds and an entirely new realm of Internet innovation."
As part of the wideband deployment, Comcast has launched the new 50 Mbps premium speed tier to its residential and business customers. The new service is ideal for households or businesses simultaneously using several computers or Internet-connected devices, while also appealing to those who simply want some of the fastest speeds available today:
New Residential Tier
-- Extreme 50, offers up to 50 Mbps of downstream speed and up to 10 Mbps
of upstream speed at $99.95 a month.*
With Extreme 50, Comcast customers will be able to download a high-definition movie (6 GB) in about 16 minutes, a standard-definition movie (2 GB) in about five minutes and a standard-definition TV show (300 MB) in a matter of seconds. Customers with Extreme 50 also will be able to download digital photos, songs and games faster than ever.
In addition to the new Extreme 50 speed tier, wideband is also enabling Comcast to boost speeds for most of its existing residential customers. Performance customers will benefit from increases in downstream and upstream speeds, offering up to 12 Mbps and 2 Mbps, respectively. Plus, with PowerBoost® technology, customers are able to enjoy even faster speeds to download and upload files such as videos, games, music and photos.
New Business Class Tiers
Business customers will also benefit from wideband with increased efficiency and productivity. Customers can sign up for the Deluxe 50 Mbps / 10 Mbps tier for $189.95 a month, which includes a full suite of features and support. As part of their service, Comcast Business Class customers receive Microsoft Communication Services, providing corporate class e-mail, calendaring and document sharing, as well as additional benefits such as firewall protection, static IP addresses, multiple e-mail addresses and business class 24/7 customer support. A new Premium tier will also be introduced, offering speeds up to 22 Mbps / 5 Mbps for $99.95 a month.
Comcast has now rolled out the new wideband technology to nearly 80 percent of its footprint across the nation, which means that more than 40 million homes and businesses can now enjoy one of the fastest Internet services in the country.
* Pricing for residential customers and requires subscription to Comcast Cable service.

MTV & Electus Announce Series Development on First-ever Interactive Telenovela, 'Pedro & Maria'
-Award-winning actress America Ferrera to executive produce; Author of Tony Award-winning musical Quiara Alegria Hudes to write the script and executive produce - -Procter & Gamble Productions to lend creative support-
NEW YORK, April 12 -- Ben Silverman's next generation multimedia studio, Electus, an operating business of IAC (NASDAQ: IACI), and MTV today announced their plan to actively develop and produce the first-ever multicultural, interactive series built for the digital age for MTV. Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actress America Ferrera will executive produce the series with her production company, Take Fountain. Quiara Alegria Hudes, the author of the Tony award-winning Broadway musical "In the Heights," will write the script and executive produce, and Ian Kleinert and Jarred Weisfeld of Objective Entertainment will co-executive produce. Procter & Gamble Productions has also signed on to produce and lend creative support to the innovative content and production initiative.
The collaboration between world-renowned producers, writers, a major television network and one of the top global marketers marks the creation of a groundbreaking new production marketing model geared toward a burgeoning demographic. Electus will own all international distribution rights for "Pedro & Maria" including television, motion picture and digital. Created and executive produced by Ben Silverman, "Pedro & Maria" is the first-ever interactive Telenovela, developed for both television and the web. The show is a bilingual, modern day Romeo & Juliet that will, for the first time, give audience members the ability to vote and decide on the direction the characters and story lines will take. MTV and Electus will partner and utilize digital platforms including Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites (in both English and Spanish), allowing viewers to actively participate in the show's outcome.
"World class marketers, content creators and top producers are beginning to recognize that their individual success relies heavily on their ability to join forces to create content platforms that are both engaging and entertaining, while over delivering a compelling message for their audience," said Ben Silverman, CEO of Electus. "America Ferrera, MTV and P&G are leading this charge alongside us with a groundbreaking new interactive platform that allows us to tap into this growing and important demographic."
"'Pedro & Maria' comes to us from a trifecta of talent in Ben, America and Quiara, who collectively will bring this youthful, contemporary Latino romantic story to life. The added collaboration with Proctor and Gamble makes this a unique project that perfectly complements our scripted slate and the overall creative diversity at MTV. The Latino population is an under-represented and under-served segment of the audience, and I am excited to help bring this relevant show to MTV," said David Janollari Executive Vice President, Scripted Development, MTV.
Procter & Gamble Productions will serve as a co-producer with MTV and Electus for "Pedro & Maria," creating original commercials and unique, branded entertainment opportunities for several of P&G's beauty and health brands in and around the show and across multiple media platforms, including television and digital.
"Electus is at the forefront of the evolution of content and by partnering with them for a project like 'Pedro & Maria' we can truly explore innovative and creative branded entertainment opportunities for a multicultural audience," said Rich DelCore, Director of Branded Entertainment at P&G. "Ben has played a critical role in transforming the traditional advertising model and creating unique links and unprecedented collaboration between content production, advertising, and marketing across the board and we are thrilled to be working with him on this project."
Capitalizing on the ever-evolving world of multimedia production and distribution, Electus is the industry's first non-traditional entertainment studio that connects advertisers, distributors and content creators early on in the development process, enabling sponsors to be a partner in campaigns and content creation.
About Electus
Electus is the first integrated multimedia entertainment studio to unite producers, creators, advertisers and distributors under one roof and produce all forms of content for distribution across a variety of platforms around the world. Headed by Ben Silverman, in partnership with IAC, the studio connects advertisers, distributors and content creators early on in the development process, enabling marketers and advertisers to be a true partner in campaigns and content creation.

Envivio Demonstrates 1080p MVC Encoding for 3D TV at NAB 2010
Puts Image Quality First to Ensure that 3D Content Makes Bold and Lasting Impressions
LAS VEGAS, April 12 -- Envivio Inc. today began offering a public demonstration at NAB 2010 in which the company's current-generation 4Caster(TM) C42 Three Screens video encoder delivers full-resolution, 1080p, stereoscopic 3D content. The scalable, flexible software architecture of the Envivio 4Caster C42 video delivery platform makes it uniquely suited to accommodate changes brought about by new standards such as the MVC extension to the MPEG-4 AVC standard. More information about the Envivio 3D demonstration is available at NAB 2010 (Booth SU4302), April 12-15 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
"3D television is all about creating a stunning, immersive experience for the viewer, so the quality of the encoding and the resulting video are going to be defining factors for successful 3D services," said Arnaud Perrier, Envivio VP of Solutions. "With this demonstration, Envivio is not only showing the excellence and performance capabilities of the 4Caster C42 encoding platform that we are delivering to customers today, but also that 3D content can be delivered efficiently to any capable device over existing networks."
Unlike currently deployed "side-by-side" or "over-under" split image technologies that reduce the original resolution by half, the 4Caster C42 makes it possible to preserve and encode the full original image resolution in each eye, thus truly exploiting the maximum capabilities of the new generation of HD 3D displays. For bandwidth constrained networks, the high-efficiency MVC encoding engine of the 4Caster C42 delivers full 1080p 3D with significant bandwidth savings over simulcasting a pair of 2D streams, while maintaining backward compatibility with legacy 2D receivers.

Verizon Wireless Boosts Coverage Near Tupelo National Battlefield
TUPELO, Miss., April 12 -- Just as the battle cries were heard loud and clear during the Battle of Tupelo nearly 146 years ago, history buffs visiting Tupelo National Battlefield will now enjoy clearer calls and enhanced wireless services. Verizon Wireless recently activated a new advanced digital cell site in Tupelo, Miss. This new site will enhance voice and 3G data coverage along Main St. in Tupelo and around Tupelo National Battlefield.
This new site, which utilizes high speed EV-DO and Rev. A technology, will enhance 3G coverage for Lee County residents, allowing them to enjoy even clearer call reception and faster speeds when sending text, picture or video messages, downloading hit music through VCAST Music with Rhapsody, or catching up on their favorite TV Shows on VCAST Mobile TV.
"Travelers depend on Verizon Wireless to provide the most reliable 3G network in cities, towns, rural areas and near historic landmarks like the Tupelo National Battlefield," said Leo Perreault, executive director - Network for Verizon Wireless. "At Verizon Wireless, we are committed to growing and expanding to meet the needs of our customers across North Mississippi and investments such as this new cell site are further proof of that dedication."

Powel, Inc. Introduces Mobile Storm Assessment Tool
ST. PAUL, Minn., April 12 -- Powel, Inc., a leading developer of software that helps utilities work smarter, today introduced StormWorks(TM) powered by QuantaStorms(TM), a mobile storm assessment application that coordinates informed, targeted responses between the field and office to speed recovery from storm-related outages.
Developed with nationally prominent PAR Electrical Contractors, Inc., a Quanta Services company, StormWorks allows field personnel equipped with mobile PCs to generate comprehensive damage reports for swift dispatch of appropriate crews and materials. The client/server-based system helps restore power more quickly and cost-effectively by letting utilities assign restoration work to crews faster to minimize non-productive waiting time.
The mobile client uses simple pen-based inputs so office staff, line crews and outside emergency crews can learn to use StormWorks quickly. With the option to perform both Initial Assessments to estimate total damage quickly or Detailed Assessments to generate printed work packets for repair crews showing exactly where to go and with what materials, StormWorks lets utilities understand and respond effectively to storm-related outages. All assessments are GPS-enabled but street addresses can be entered manually to define the damage location.
Office personnel using the StormWorks "Executive Dashboard" can call up assessors and crews, make assignments and pull together all assessment data to extrapolate total damage. The system's customizable algorithms estimate cost and man-hours for repairs. Once the total damage is known, users can run "what-if" scenarios based on select factors (personnel numbers, skill levels, current weather) to get a more accurate estimate of crews and days needed to restore, improving the utility's ability to communicate correct restoration timelines to customers and the media.
"Utilities face all sorts of liabilities if electric service isn't restored as safely, quickly and effectively as possible," said Powel CEO Scott Rogers. "Our StormWorks solution helps them to effectively plan and systematically manage storm events so that they can better minimize the risks."
StormWorks is just one application within the Powel WorkStudio suite. Powel WorkStudio is a mobile work management platform with office-based analysis that helps utilities work smarter through the entire asset lifecycle. Powel WorkStudio contains other complementary applications for field design (StakeOut) vegetation management, maintenance management and timesheets. By implementing applications based on a common platform, utilities can reduce the total deployment cost and risk.
About Powel, Inc.
Powel, Inc., headquartered in St. Paul, MN, delivers software solutions that realize our mission of "Helping Utilities Work Smarter." Powel WorkStudio is a Mobile Work Management platform with office-based analysis that helps utilities work smarter through the entire asset lifecycle, from design to construction to service, including right-of-way clearance, maintenance and storm assessment. RipCode Enables Clientless Adobe Flash Video on Apple iPad
On-Demand Transcoding Pivots Video files to iPad-Enabled Video Codecs
RICHARDSON, Texas, April 12 -- RipCode, Inc., the leader in transactional transcoding, announced today its newest product, the TransAct Transcoder V6 can intercept Adobe Flash-based file or live video requests and convert them to a container, video codec, and audio codec accepted by Apple Inc.'s new iPad - all transparently to the end user device and without the need for any pre-transcoding or device-based client.
The iPad is poised to further accelerate and expand the mobile video device market just as the iPhone has over the last several years. However, one of its noted shortcomings has been Apple's lack of support for Flash video playback, given the dominant position of Flash in professionally generated entertainment, sports and news content. HTML5 has been purported to address this dilemma by introducing Apple device applications that are simply 'thin clients' communicating back to a web site hosting and subsequently delivering Flash files without a device-based player, but HTML5 is not yet widely adopted. RipCode's Transactional Transcoding platform enables an alternate and immediate solution to this issue, opening up video content to users without requiring the content hoster to move to HTML5 or pre-transcode entire video libraries from Flash to an iPad-accepted container format. By transcoding the content 'in the cloud', it is essentially analogous to a network-based Flash to MP4 or MPEG-TS video adaption layer.
"Transcoding is an integral part of any volume-based video preparation and delivery infrastructure. With new codecs, devices, resolutions, delivery protocols, rights management controls, and monetization needs constantly evolving the video delivery landscape, this space will continue to churn for many years," stated Brendon Mills, CEO of RipCode. "The 'Flash on iPad' dilemma is really just the latest in a long line of speed bumps on the road towards 'any-content, any-time, any-place, any-device' that we all desire. Fortunately, our technology removes this barrier in a way that is attractive to content hosters, a key device manufacturer, a key video player provider, and the end user alike."
RipCode's V6 transcoding appliance is equipped with industry-leading transcoding flexibility (file-to-file, file-to-stream, stream-to-stream, stream-to-file, and RipCode's On-Demand Transcoding), codec and container flexibility, concurrency, video processing functions, and resolutions ranging from QVGA to 1080i/p. Further, the V6 supports a rich suite of integrated video delivery options including QuickTime, MP4 Progressive Download, Apple's MPEG-TS Adaptive Progressive Download for file-based and live content, Microsoft Smooth Streaming, and RTSP. It is easily integrated - as hardware or software - into any content hosting/delivery operation given its Linux/Intel processing core. Working in conjunction with RipCode's Commander and Detector, content requests from an iPad is automatically detected, which launches an intelligent content transcoding workflow that re-encodes a Flash file to one of the aforementioned iPad-accepted formats, and then delivers either via MP4 Progressive Download or Apple's MPEG-TS Adaptive Progressive Download.
RipCode will be demonstrating this capability for both live and video on demand applications at NAB 2010 this week in Las Vegas. Please access http://www.ripcode.com/nab/ to arrange an appointment to visit our suite at the Hilton, adjacent to the Las Vegas Convention Center.
About RipCode
RipCode is the market leader in transactional video transcoding; the fundamental technology enabling content owners, video delivery service providers, and network service providers to achieve 'any content, anywhere, anytime, any device'.
Built to address the needs of today's new media market, the RipCode TransAct Platform integrates live and on-demand transcoding with key video delivery elements including device detection, workflow management, dynamic ad insertion, network-aware resource management and open interoperability with third-party applications and systems. RipCode's TransAct solution portfolio elevates transcoding to a real-time transaction that enables scalable cross-marketing of content across the three-screen domain for the greatest flexibility in expanding video delivery and increasing revenue opportunities.

Agito Networks Customer Selected to Present on Enterprise Mobility at Leading Analyst Firm's Mobility Summit
Hertford Regional College to Present on Improving Indoor Coverage and Extending Mobile Unified Communications Capabilities to Mobile Workers
SANTA CLARA, Calif., April 12 -- Agito Networks, Inc.(TM), the company delivering innovative solutions in enterprise mobility, today announced that customer Hertford Regional College (HRC) has been selected to present at the Gartner Wireless, Networking & Communications Summit being held in San Diego from April 19 - 21.
Dr. Daniel Hidlebaugh, HRC Director of Network Services, will present an end-user case study session on improving indoor coverage and extending mobile Unified Communications to mobile workers at 5:30 pm on April 19. Selection of the speakers for the event was determined by Gartner analysts.
Since the early 1990s when it formed, HRC has grown in size, currently employing 900 staff and serving more than 12,000 full- and part-time students. After completing a $140 million construction project to update its facilities, including a 4-story building that covers half of a city block, HRC learned the new building materials do not allow cellular coverage indoors. Since mobile phone accessibility is critical to the college's staff, HRC turned to Agito's RoamAnywhere(TM) Mobility Router(TM) to not only provide indoor mobile coverage, but also cut the college's telecommunications expenses in half by moving calls off cellular and onto the college's free WiFi network.
"Now we can't do without our Agito system, after one day it became a must have," Hidlebaugh said. "Coverage was a concern before, but now we can reach each other at all times. This is exactly what we were looking for, and accessibility is huge for us. Organizations depend on their infrastructure to deliver for them, and with Agito everyone can be reached quickly. Everyone is benefiting from this, and we no longer have to spend over an hour trying to find someone."
Agito Networks' RoamAnywhere Mobility Router extends UC, PBX and deskphone features to mobile phones, while providing industry-leading handover between WiFi, 3G and cellular networks. RoamAnywhere uniquely delivers a mobile UC product with high availability, redundancy, security, enterprise scalability, and the industry's broadest IP-PBX and mobile handset support, including VoIP support for the Apple® iPhone®, iPod touch®, iPad and Research In Motion (RIM®) BlackBerry® smartphones. RoamAnywhere works with all cellular networks, and natively integrates with enterprises' existing equipment, including WLAN infrastructure and directory stores.
Gartner has expanded the Gartner Wireless, Networking & Communications Summit to cover all aspects of communication, including fixed and mobile, voice and data, WAN and LAN, and unified communications and collaboration. At the Gartner Wireless, Networking & Communications Summit, attendees can vet and refine strategy, hear the latest research, learn the new best practices, and leave with a roadmap for implementing the mobility and network integration needed to improve ROI, deliver more business value, and quantify that contribution. This year will showcase new expanded coverage of networking, an emphasis on managing the mobile workforce, a supplemental track focused on best practices, more interaction with analysts and more networking opportunities, hands-on workshops, more than a dozen analyst/user roundtable discussions on key topics, end user case studies, plus a show floor filled with leading vendors unveiling their latest products and services. For more information, see:
Agito Networks is the award-winning technology leader in enterprise mobility. Its product, the RoamAnywhere Mobility Router, is an innovative mobile Unified Communications (UC) product enabling enterprises to extend voice and UC to cell phones. izmomedia Launches e-Reader: Device-Independent Software Frees Publishers from Hardware Lock-In
izmoReader will be unveiled on the Apple iPad at the MediaXchange conference in Orlando, April 11th - 14th
ORLANDO, Fla., April 12 -- izmomedia, a leading provider of digital media solutions, today announced the release of izmoReader, the company's device independent e-reader software system. izmoReader is a digital publishing and advertising system that empowers newspapers and media companies to take advantage of the explosive growth in device-based news and content readers by digitally publishing existing web-based content to a network of subscribers, regardless of the hardware device used by the consumer.
News readers, which aggregate digital media content including news, video, audio, and other interactive content, are gaining significant traction in today's media market. According to a January 2010 Consumer Electronics Association's research report, the e-reader device market will double in 2010, doubling again by the end of 2012, and reach a total market size of 16 million e-readers by 2014.
"The rapidly growing interest in digital e-readers is increasingly shaping the media market," said Tej Soni, president of izmomedia. "The key challenges for publishers in the face of this evolving media trend are 1) which device to bet on, 2) how to monetize news reader content, and 3) how to manage that content across a large network of subscribers. All three of these challenges are solved by izmoReader, which is unique in the industry."
izmoReader is available as a downloadable "app" that allows a media company or other content publisher to upload, edit and manage content either directly or from existing content on their website. The content is then automatically distributed across the Web to participating subscribers who have installed izmoReader on their devices. Subscribers are provided a free download of izmoReader which automatically syncs with the publishing system, accepts the daily publication and makes it available to the subscriber both online and offline, along with targeted advertising.
izmoReader delivers interactive print, audio and video integration to publishers and is able to converge news and interactive media. With izmoReader, publishers can tap into this huge - and rapidly expanding - subscriber group and add to their readership figures by taking advantage of channels other than traditional media. At the same time, publishers can add to their revenue through banner ads, classified ads, masthead sponsorship, channel sponsorship and paid subscriptions.
Designed to be compatible with all hardware devices the subscriber might be using (personal computer, Amazon Kindle, Apple iPhone and iPad, Barnes & Nobel Nook, etc...), izmoReader is multimedia-enabled for delivery of rich interactive content and can seamlessly integrate with existing digital content publishing systems.
The izmoReader publishing system is built on Adobe AIR, the industry standard platform for rich Internet applications deployment, and offers, among others, features that can block viewing by non-paying subscribers and automatically compile subscriber profile information.
izmomedia will demonstrate izmoReader, including an Apple iPad version, at the upcoming MediaXchange conference in Orlando, Florida, April 11th - April 14th, booth #900.
About izmomedia:
izmomedia provides digital publishing technology to help traditional media grow its audience and extend its footprint and brand identity through innovative features that encourage interactivity and user participation. izmoReader, the company's new and innovative digital publishing and advertising system for newspapers and media companies, publishes existing web-based content to a network of subscribers, regardless of the hardware device used by the consumer. The izmomedia Carsite portal generates new classified advertising revenue streams for media companies while helping to shore up existing revenue streams by taking traditional media sales and marketing online and integrating it with user needs.

Zinch.com Launches Its First Overseas Service to Connect Chinese Students with US Higher Education Programs and Scholarships
America's social network connecting students and schools brings customized service suite to China
BEIJING, April 12 -- Zinch.com, the social network connecting high school and college students with educational and scholarship opportunities, announced the launch of a comprehensive Chinese-language website, and associated services, to help Chinese students choose American undergraduate and graduate programs - and to help American Admissions Officers find the best-fit Chinese candidates. The new site can be found at http://www.zinch.cn.
Almost 100,000 Chinese students are now studying in the United States, up 21% from last year, according to the Institute of International Education (IIE). Since Chinese students apply to multiple American programs, and not everyone is accepted or can attend, total applications from China are estimated to exceed 5 million per year. For many top US schools, Chinese students are now the single largest overseas applicant cohort. This increasing demand, coupled with rapidly-changing trends in China (such as formation of new high schools and undergraduate curriculum changes at universities) can make it difficult for US Admissions Officers to understand fast-evolving characteristics of the Chinese applicant pool. At the same time, lesser-known schools are eager to attract more students from China.
"Chinese students have long made the US their most popular study-abroad destination, and in recent years the number of applicants to programs of all kinds has exploded," said Anne Dwane, CEO of Zinch.com. "We've heard from many of the Admissions Officers who already use Zinch.com to recruit American students that they need help identifying the best-fit students from among so many seemingly similar Chinese applicants."
To help schools fine-tune their selections from the large and growing pool of prospective Chinese students, Zinch.com has launched a Chinese-language website where Chinese students can complete a detailed, confidential personal profile to showcase themselves to American Admissions Officers. The profile is intended to complement schools' existing application process, not replace it.
The website also includes a searchable database of more than 6,000 American undergraduate and graduate programs, more than 1,300 videos from schools, and a comprehensive "How to study in the US" guide. All information is free to students, supported by advertising purchased by American schools.
Before getting access to this treasure trove of content, Chinese students must complete a short, live phone interview in English with the company's Beijing call center, in order to verify candidates' spoken English skills. This process is important, given admissions officers' interest in candidates' English skills.
To further help admissions officers understand the rapidly changing environment in China, the company also launched a "China Market Intelligence" service for American schools. Included are monthly white papers on topics such as the role Chinese parents play in selecting a university, or how to choose which educational fair to attend in China. The service also includes quarterly webinars about the latest trends in China, and on-demand advice about recruiting best practices in China.
The Zinch China Chairman, Tom Melcher, heads up a Beijing-based team that develops and maintains the Chinese-language website and related advisory services. A fluent Chinese speaker whose experience in China dates back to 1982, Melcher is a graduate of Yale and the Harvard Business School, and launched several Chinese internet start-ups before joining Zinch.com. He is the author of the best-selling book in China on selecting American undergraduate programs, and is frequently quoted on the subject by China's major media.
"Chinese students are admitted to universities in their own country by scoring well on a single, national test and then getting "matched" to schools," notes Melcher, "so for them, learning how to compare many different US schools and how to present themselves in a unique way that goes beyond their test scores is a real challenge. That's why we've designed Zinch.cn to help educate them about the admissions process for undergraduate and graduate study in the United States. We pull together a lot of the best information available, and present it in ways that make it easy for them to understand."
"We are pleased to offer this new resource to Chinese students and to any American school interested in finding qualified Chinese applicants," said Dwane.
About the Company:
Zinch.com is the social network connecting students with opportunities: colleges, scholarships, study abroad opportunities, and graduate schools. At Zinch.com, over 2 million students have created professional profiles to showcase themselves as more than test scores. Zinch.com profiles 6,000 American undergraduate and graduate programs, and lists $1.9 billion in scholarships. Admissions Officers trust Zinch.com to help them recruit students who would fit well at their institutions. Visit the company at http://www.zinch.com.

Trimble Raises the Bar for GNSS Infrastructure, Earth Science and Network Applications with the Trimble NetR9 Reference Receiver
SUNNYVALE, Calif., April 12 -- Trimble (NASDAQ: TRMB) today introduced an innovative Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) reference receiver for infrastructure, precise scientific and network applications -- the Trimble® NetR9(TM) GNSS reference receiver. The new Continuously Operating Reference Station (CORS) receiver can support the most demanding applications for the earth science community and for the surveying, construction, mapping and agricultural industries. The NetR9 was designed to provide the user with maximum features and functionality from a single receiver.
The Trimble NetR9 reference receiver offers an industry-leading 440 channels for robust, unrivaled GNSS constellation tracking. The receiver supports a wide range of satellite signals, including GPS and GLONASS signals. In addition, Trimble is committed to providing Galileo-compatible products in advance of Galileo system availability. In support of this plan, the Trimble receiver is capable of tracking the experimental Galileo GIOVE-A and GIOVE-B test satellites for signal evaluation and test purposes.
Highly versatile and offering the complete functionality of a geodetic reference station, the Trimble NetR9 reference receiver can be used as a standalone receiver or as part of a network solution. Specific applications include high-accuracy positioning as part of a Trimble VRS(TM) network, as a mobile field base station or CORS for Real-time Kinematic (RTK) corrections, as a scientific reference station collecting information for specialized studies, as a field campaign receiver for post-processing applications and as support for Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) coastal beacons. In addition, the Trimble NetR9 reference receiver can be used for monitoring the integrity of VRS networks as well as the deformation of physical infrastructure such as bridges, dams, mines, oil platforms and other natural and manmade structures.
The Trimble NetR9 reference receiver's large internal memory (8 GB) allows post-processed results for base stations to be computed after survey completion, improving the accuracy of the survey. The highly compressed secure internal memory allows for more than 20 years of 15-second dual-frequency GPS data storage. In addition, the NetR9 also has USB logging capability for additional storage capacity.
The receiver supports the new CMRx communications protocol, which provides unprecedented correction compression for optimized bandwidth and full utilization of all satellites in view. This gives the customer more robust positioning data and the most reliable positioning performance on the market today.
Optimized for field use with built-in rechargeable batteries, the lightweight yet rugged Trimble NetR9 reference receiver consumes very little power and can be used for projects with remote connectivity and in extreme weather conditions. It has an IP67 rating, which means it is completely sealed against dust and can survive immersion in up to a meter of water for approximately 30 minutes. It also meets MIL-STD 810F standard for drops, vibration and temperature extremes. The Trimble NetR9 has its physical memory built into the circuit board, providing greater protection of data, particularly under extreme conditions. Multiple built-in serial ports supply communications and power to support field use, whether connecting to a radio for RTK surveys, direct communication with a satellite phone for remote operations, or for ancillary input devices such as inclinometers and ...meteorological sensors, and it offers Bluetooth communication with a cell phone for real-time data streaming. In addition, both power and Ethernet can be conveniently supplied over a single cable using Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology.
"The Trimble NetR9 reference receiver raises the bar for today's modern infrastructure technology," said Pierre Desjardins, general manager for Trimble's Infrastructure Division. "Trimble has once again redefined the industry standard for ultra-fast, high-reliability, multi-constellation reference receivers, providing our customers the flexibility required for today and tomorrow's challenges. Trimble is committed to developing complete solutions with the latest GNSS technology that meet the complex needs of our customers."
The Trimble NetR9 reference receiver is available in the second quarter of 2010. For more information, visit: http://www.trimble.com, call 1-800-767-4822 (U.S. only), +1-303-323-4111 (outside of the U.S.) or email: Infrastructure_Sales@Trimble.com.

Magal Security Systems Reports Fourth Quarter 2009 and Year-End 2009 Financial Results
YAHUD, Israel, April 12, 2010-- Magal Security Systems Ltd. (NASDAQ GMS: MAGS, TASE: MAGS) today
announced its consolidated financial results for the three and twelve month
periods ended December 31, 2009. Management will hold an investors'
conference call later today, at 9am ET Time, 4pm Israel time, to discuss the
results.
In September 2009, Magal's Board of Directors resolved to
discontinue the operation of the European integration subsidiary that was,
acquired in September 2007. The subsidiary was sold in December 2009. The
results for the three and the twelve month periods ended December 31, 2009
and 2008, as well as the capital gain resulting from the sale, were
reclassified to disclose the results of that subsidiary as discontinued
operations.
FOURTH QUARTER 2009 RESULTS
Revenues for the fourth quarter of 2009 totaled US$15.0
million, a decrease of 10.1% compared to the fourth quarter of 2008. The
revenue decrease is mostly attributable to revenue shortfall in the North and
Latin American markets compared with the comparable period in 2008.
Gross profit for the fourth quarter of 2009 was US$5.7
million, or 38.3% of revenues, compared to 35.4% of revenues as reported for
the fourth quarter of 2008. Gross margin in the quarter increased despite the
lower revenue, due to a more favorable mix of products and projects and a
more favorable currency exchange rate environment for Magal in 2009 compared
with 2008. Gross margin also benefited from the rationalization of costs and
consolidation of the North American business into one unit.
Operating loss for the fourth quarter of 2009 was US$0.9
million, compared with an operating loss of US$8.3 million for the fourth
quarter of 2008.
Financing expenses in the three months ended December 31, 2009
amounted to US$0.5 million compared to financing income of US$0.2 million in
the fourth quarter of 2008.
Income from discontinued operations was US$4.3 million in the
fourth quarter of 2009 compared with a loss of US$12.0 million in the same
period last year.
Net income attributable to Magal's shareholders for the fourth
quarter of 2009, was US$2.0 million, compared with a net loss of US$24
million for the fourth quarter of 2008. Net earnings per share in the fourth
quarter of 2009 was US$0.19, compared with a net loss per share of US$(2.31)
in the same period last year.
FULL YEAR 2009 RESULTS
Revenues for the year ended December 31, 2009 was US$54.5
million, a 4.5% decrease compared with the previous year. The decrease is
primarily attributable to the lower revenues generated by the Company's
Canadian subsidiary and a reduction in revenues in the European market.
Gross profit for the year increased by 8.4% to US$21.2
million, representing 38.9% of revenues, compared with US$19.5 million,
representing 34.2% of revenues in 2008. This increase is mainly attributable
to the previously-mentioned more favorable currency exchange rate environment
for Magal in 2009 compared with 2008 as well as a more favorable mix of
products and projects. Gross margin also benefited from the rationalization
of costs and consolidation of the North American business into one unit.
Operating loss for 2009 was US$2.7 million, compared with an
operating loss of US$14.6 million in 2008. The operating loss in 2009 was
primarily attributable to the lower volume of revenues resulting from the
global economic crisis in 2009.
Net loss attributable to Magal's shareholders for 2009 was
US$0.9 million compared with a net loss of US$32.6 million in 2008. Net loss
per share for the year ended December 31, 2009 was US$0.08, compared with a
net loss per share of US$3.14 in 2008.
MANAGEMENT COMMENT
Commenting on the results, Mr. Eitan Livneh, President and CEO
of Magal, said, "2009 was a turnaround year for Magal. I believe that the
changes initiated by the new management team provide a solid foundation for
improvements in 2010 and beyond. Over the past year, we have focused on
improving every area of the business. This has included making some key
management changes, rationalizing all costs, as well as consolidating our
North American business into one unit, realizing significant cost savings.
The improvement in our margins over the past year, is a clear testament to
our success in this regard."
"Looking ahead, in 2010 we intend to continue to develop and
sell new advanced security sensors, continue to build on our success with
Fortis in the Municipal Control and Command field, and improve our
capabilities in the Intelligent Video Analytics space. While the past year
has seen many changes for Magal, I believe that they were for the better and
together with the whole management team at Magal, we remain enthusiastic
about Magal's future," concluded Mr. Livneh.

eServGlobal Awarded NP Discovery Certification by the GSMA
PARIS, April 12, 2010-- eServGlobal Limited (LSE: ESG & ASX: ESV), a provider of
smarter transaction management solutions in Charging, Payment, Retention and
Network Services today reported that it was awarded certification by the GSMA
for meeting the technical requirements of the Pathfinder Program, the GSMA's
Carrier ENUM Service.
Representing the interests of the worldwide communications
industry, the GSMA created Pathfinder, a global number translation service,
to allow operators, carriers and hubs more cost-efficient routing of
international calls, SMS and multi-media messages using a combination of TDM
and SIP networks. The GSMA also set up the Pathfinder Industry Partner
Program aimed at promoting interoperability of session-based communications
and technologies, including VoIP peering, SIP and ENUM, Messaging and
Presence Services as well as interconnection of fixed and mobile networks.
A particular aspect of the Pathfinder service is the Number
Portability (NP) Discovery service which enables operators to identify the
correct destination Service Provider Network (SPN) for relevant traffic
corridors. Visibility regarding the destination SPN enables the inquiring
network to be more intelligent about route optimization, traffic bundling,
service delivery, quality of service, billing and reconciliation. This
enhanced destination knowledge further helps manage the voice traffic bundles
and termination rates in commercial agreements and reduces missed message
delivery.
This fits in well with eServGlobal's own Local Number
Portability offering, which permits an operator to test each call for NP on a
real time basis. Checking national numbers is done using a copy of the local
NP database. Used in conjunction with the GSMA's PathFinder NP Discovery
Service, operators can check international destinations as well, to ensure
that they are correctly routed without incurring further costs.
"The GSMA is pleased to welcome eServGlobal into the growing
GSMA Pathfinder Partner Program and is delighted to help service providers
manage number portability more cost effectively as a result," said Adrian
Dodd, Senior Director at the GSMA.
"After significant testing, we're proud to announce that
eServGlobal has been named an accredited member of the Pathfinder Programme
by the GSMA" said Craig Halliday, Chief Operating Officer, eServGlobal. "We
look forward to assisting operators to increase their connection success rate
and make significant cost savings on their call routing."
