Dr. Peter Schultz Featured Presenter for Nobel Prize Winner Charles K. Kao Symposium at OFC/ NFOEC 2010
NORCROSS, Ga., March 16 -- Peter C. Schultz, Ph.D., independent inventor and consultant, retired CEO of Heraeus Tenevo, Inc. and member of the Board of Managers of OFS Fitel, LLC (OFS) will be a featured speaker at the Charles Kao symposium, Wednesday, March 24th from 6-8pm in celebration of the recent Nobel Prize awarded to Charles K. Kao. Dr. Charles Kao is the winner of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics for his "groundbreaking achievements concerning the transmission of light in fibers for optical communication."
The connection between these two pioneers in optical fiber is not lost. In 1964, a critical specification was identified by Dr. Kao for long-range communications devices, proposing that the loss of signal in fiber optic cables could reach 20 decibels of light loss per kilometer if impurities and flaws in the glass could be eliminated. Dr. Kao illustrated the need for a purer form of glass to help reduce light loss. In 1970, Dr. Schultz and his co-researchers Drs. Maurer and Keck, after four years of experimenting at Corning, invented the world's first practical glass optical fiber based on doped fused silica (US patent 3,659,915) and a vapor deposition process to produce it (US patent 3,711,262), and capable of accurately carrying significantly more information than copper wire to a destination many miles away. Dr. Schultz's co-discovery of optical fiber solved the problem presented by Dr. Kao, meeting all critical specifications, and has become crucial to all aspects of our modern telecommunication infrastructure.
Dr. Schultz holds 26 patents and has written over 20 research papers and is an expert in fused silica glasses.
"Dr. Kao's Nobel prize winning work set the stage for the development of the optical communications network and many other applications of fiber optics that are the source of OFS customers. As an Optical Society of America (OSA) corporate member and our many individual OSA members we join together to honor Dr. Kao for his vision and creativity," said Dr. Timothy F. Murray, Chairman and CEO of OFS. "OFS has been fortunate to have Dr. Schultz as part of our board. His experiences as an inventor entrepreneur and CEO made him especially valuable to a company such as ours. It was founded in the Bell Labs tradition of innovation in optical fiber technologies, yet we faced, from the moment we were created, fast and wrenching changes in the global telecommunications marketplace. We are proud to be associated with him and expect to continue to benefit from the association for years to come as we serve the customers Dr. Kao's vision created."

WASHINGTON, March 16 -- International Broadband Electric Communications, Inc. (IBEC), the nation's leading provider of Broadband over Power Lines (BPL) products and services to Rural America, commented on the FCC's National Broadband Plan released today.
Alyssa Clemsen Roberts, Government Affairs Coordinator of IBEC, remarked:
"The number one goal should be providing all Americans with affordable,
reliable, high-speed Internet as soon as possible; the FCC's mixed-
bag plan disappointedly lists that goal at third and provides itself a
ten year period to reach it. We would have hoped for a more
aggressive plan and look forward to working with the FCC and our
utility and technology partners to accelerate that plan to the benefit
of rural citizens."
With BPL, customers literally plug into any electric outlet in their home to get broadband service. IBEC holds a number of industry-leading BPL patents. The cost to install BPL is a fraction of installing cable, DSL, or fiber optic solutions in rural areas because BPL relies on long-established and existing electric power lines and infrastructure.
IBEC, Inc. is a full-service provider of Broadband over Power Line Internet access solutions and services, electric utility SmartGrid management and control solutions, and powerline-based security systems. Focused on meeting the broadband needs of rural and underserved America, IBEC is the leading provider of Broadband over Power Line solutions to rural electric utilities and their consumers.
Landrieu Comments on Release of National Broadband Plan
Includes several Landrieu recommendations to expand high-speed Internet
WASHINGTON, March 16 -- United States Senator Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., Chair of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, today commented on the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) release of the National Broadband Plan to increase broadband Internet access in every corner of the country.
"The National Broadband Plan released by the FCC encourages the nationwide expansion of broadband Internet services to homes and businesses," Sen. Landrieu said. "Increasing rural small businesses competitiveness and improving the quality of education available to our students, broadband expansion has the ability to touch nearly 100 million Americans that are without Internet access and 14 million Americans who could not have access to the service even if they wanted it. Enacting this plan will ensure that businesses in the most unserved and underserved areas of the country have the ability to compete with businesses in more technologically developed areas, spurring economic growth in rural parts of the nation.
"In the coming weeks, the Small Business Committee will hold an oversight hearing to review the impact of the National Broadband Plan on small businesses, particularly businesses in rural areas. We will continue our oversight of the broadband grant initiatives enacted in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to ensure the money is reaching rural small businesses that want to jumpstart their local economies."
The National Broadband Plan calls for a 10-year period to:
-- Connect 100 million households to affordable high-speed internet,
building the world's largest market of broadband users and ensuring
that new jobs and businesses are created in America;
-- Bring affordable high-speed internet access to anchor institutions
like schools, hospitals, and military installations so America is
hosting the experiments that produce tomorrow's ideas and industries;
-- Ensure the United States is leading the world in mobile innovation by
making broadband internet newly available for licensed and unlicensed
use;
-- Move the adoption of high-speed internet rates from roughly 65 percent
to more than 90 percent and make sure that every child in America is
digitally literate by the time he or she leaves high school;
-- Bring affordable broadband to rural communities and vulnerable
populations by transitioning existing Universal Service Fund support
from yesterday's analog technologies to tomorrow's digital
infrastructure;
-- Promote competition across the broadband ecosystem by ensuring greater
transparency, remove barriers to entry, and conduct market-based
analysis with quality data on price, speed, and availability; and
-- Enhance the safety of the American people by providing every first
responder with access to a nationwide, wireless, interoperable public
safety network.
Senator Landrieu has been an advocate for broadband Internet expansion -- co-sponsoring the Broadband Data Improvement Act that became law in October of 2008. This law encourages the deployment of high-speed Internet access to areas that need it, most notably rural communities. In December 2009, Sen. Landrieu sent a letter to the FCC citing the impact broadband expansion can have on small business growth. To view a copy of Sen. Landrieu's letter, please click here.
In a February letter to FCC Chair Julius Genachowski, Sen. Landrieu cited several policy recommendations that were included in the National Broadband Plan, including:
-- Creation of SBA Broadband and Emerging IT Coordinator;
-- Improvement of Broadband Counseling Among SBA Resource Partners;
-- Expanding the reach of Entrepreneurial Development Service Via
Broadband and Online Applications;
-- Creation of Public-Private Partnership on Technology Training for
Small Disadvantaged Businesses; and
-- Creation of Pilot Entrepreneurial Development Programs Through the
Economic Development Administration (EDA).
To read details on these policy recommendations, please read the full letter here.

ITG Takes Asian Trading to Next Level With Launch of New Type of Dark Pool - POSIT Marketplace(TM)
Aims to reduce trading costs in Asia
NEW YORK, March 16 -- Investment Technology Group (ITG), a leading independent broker and financial technology firm, today launched POSIT Marketplace, a new type of dark pool for Asia. The first of its kind, POSIT Marketplace will combine institutional liquidity from POSIT®, ITG's leading global crossing network, with dark liquidity from some of the largest internalization pools and external venues in Asia.
Bringing down the costs of trading in Asia
POSIT Marketplace is designed to aggregate liquidity and reduce the costs of trading for fund managers and institutional firms. It does so by addressing the three largest cost factors: spreads, market impact and delay costs(1).
Launched on the one-year anniversary of POSIT Marketplace in the US, the Asian platform will bring together dark liquidity from multiple sources in the region and aims to replicate the cost savings already delivered in the US which averaged 11.5bps across all market caps in Q3 09. With average trading costs approximately 66% higher in developed Asia versus the US(2) the cost savings could be even more significant.
Commenting on the launch, Michael Corcoran, ITG's Head of Sales and Trading, Asia Pacific said: "Fund managers trading in Asia face particular challenges to find liquidity. They can now access multiple regional dark pools from a single source. Using innovative technology, POSIT Marketplace makes the hunt for liquidity simpler, more efficient, and ultimately should reduce costs for fund managers and the investors whose money they're managing."
The system is currently available for trading Hong Kong equities, with Australia and Japan to follow.
(1) See further detail below on how POSIT Marketplace works to reduce trading costs
(2) Data taken from ITG's Q4 09 global trading cost review, available at http://www.itg.com
ITG is the world's largest provider of transaction costs analysis for buyside firms. The ITG Peer database includes the aggregated global trading data of these firms, which equates to coverage of approximately 35% of total Asia ex-Japan equity turnover, 18% of total Japanese turnover and 12% of total US turnover.
How does POSIT Marketplace work to reduce the costs of trading for the buyside?
Trading costs are primarily affected by three factors. POSIT Marketplace helps to address them all:
1. Spreads - POSIT Marketplace aims to cross orders at the mid-point or
better, saving half the bid/offer spread on each trade.
2. Market impact costs - by only executing in dark pools and therefore
maintaining pre-trade anonymity, POSIT Marketplace reduces information
leakage to the market, a significant factor in managing trading costs.
3. Delay costs - trade cost analysis shows that the largest factor in
trading costs is delay, i.e. the amount of time taken to get the order
done. By aggregating liquidity across a range of dark destinations,
POSIT Marketplace increases the likelihood and frequency of orders
being filled, minimizing delay.
Why does POSIT Marketplace improve fill rates for Asian traders?
ITG has a large, global client base trading Asia Pacific equities. POSIT Marketplace aggregates into one place all of this liquidity and offers additional access to external Asian dark pools with their range of buyside, sellside and proprietary flow. Advanced technology with high-speed crossing maximizes the chances of getting fills and brings liquidity together through a single access point.

Digital Movie Traffic on the Akamai Network Increases Three Fold
-- Largest online movie distribution sites rely on Akamai* -- Akamai EdgePlatform provides optimal architecture for digital distribution of feature length films
AUSTIN, Texas, March 16 -- SXSW FESTIVAL -- Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:AKAM), the leader in powering video, dynamic transactions and enterprise applications online, today announced that leading movie distribution companies rely on Akamai's global EdgePlatform to ensure high quality movie delivery experiences online. Akamai customers including EPIX(TM), Netflix and Roxio CinemaNow(TM) are delivering HD quality movies on Akamai's uniquely distributed edge delivery network that is specifically tuned for optimal delivery of HD files online. Traffic across Akamai's network associated with the delivery of full-length feature films has seen triple digit growth since November 2009, which Akamai believes to represent not only an increase in consumer consumption, but more content being migrated onto its platform. Akamai's global network footprint and deep, category-specific experience delivering long-form, high definition video positions the company squarely to create tremendous value in this rapidly evolving market segment.
As the movie industry begins to make more of their movie libraries available digitally, a number of technology challenges emerge in order to deliver the highest-quality possible experience online, including:
-- Smooth Playback - Ensuring that feature length movies play back
uninterrupted in their entirety despite unpredictable and fluctuating
Internet connections;
-- Highest Bitrates - Allowing for high-throughput Internet connections
whether downloading or streaming large files. Because distance
decreases available throughput, movie files need to be delivered very
close to where content is accessed and to support primetime level
viewing audiences at high bitrates would require 100 Tbps of
scalability; and,
-- Interactivity - Offering interactive content, social media and
shopping experiences, that create heavy load on the Internet and
require frequent round-trips back to databases or site servers, while
keeping performance and download wait times low.
On the business side, content owners need:
-- Security - technology that can reliably protect high value digital
content from being inappropriately accessed; and,
-- Analytics - to quickly and easily understand exactly how movies are
being consumed and through which partners.
Numerous industry studies have shown that without meeting the challenges noted above, online audiences will become impatient, tune out, and find premium HD content that works elsewhere. Inherent in the value of the Akamai HD Network and EdgePlatform is the ability to deliver full-length feature films at up to full 1080p HD resolution, provide an engaging user experience, security features for protecting content, and detailed audience analytics for tracking engagement. Leveraging Akamai's global footprint of more than 61,000 servers for instant scalability and highest throughput, a key feature of the Akamai HD Network is adaptive bit rate technology that automatically adapts to a user's fluctuating Internet conditions to enable smooth playback and improved viewing experiences.
In addition, Akamai's proprietary acceleration technologies are designed to dramatically speed up dynamic transactions and accelerate applications, which is critical to enabling the new social experiences possible through BluRay Live as well as storefronts and other dynamic content that needs to run over the Internet. The Akamai HD Network offers multiple security measures, which can be used for protecting premium media such as films, including authentication, geographic blocking, player verification, transport encryption and is compatible with industry-leading DRM technologies.
With traditional movie distribution models, there is a longer consumer reaction and feedback timeline. With broadband delivery, the distributor is connected to the consumer in real time, and the additional data points this results in are invaluable to studios and distribution partners alike. Akamai Media Analytics, part of the Akamai HD Network, is designed to give online movie distribution companies vast amounts of interactive, consumer behavior data in real time. Using Akamai Media Analytics, studios create a feedback loop, which is full of rich online data allowing them to make precise and data-driven product development and feature enhancement decisions, entirely based on consumer insight.
"Akamai has been preparing for this demand and influx of large HD content for years on our network; the capacity to deliver high throughput files exists at the edge and we are already delivering such files for many of our leading customers," said Steven Chester, Vice President, Film at Akamai. "We strive to provide a digital distribution channel that allows distribution companies to experiment with new services and promotions, fully capitalize on unplanned growth and grow their business, without high up-front capital costs. This technical capability, coupled with consumer demand, is exciting for the industry."
Consumer appetites are growing as access to premium content continues and as a result, consumption patterns are increasing. According to a February 2010 ComScore Video Metrix report**, online video views grew from 14.8 billion in January 2009 to 33.2 billion in December 2009. A June 2009 PriceWaterhouseCoopers report*** projected that online rental subscriptions will reach $4.5B in 2013 and digital downloads will grow from $253M in 2008 to $753M in 2013.
Customer Success
EPIX, the premium channel formed by Viacom Inc. (NYSE:VIA)(NYSE:and)(NYSE:VIA.B), its Paramount Pictures unit, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. (MGM) and Lionsgate (NYSE:LGF), has been using Akamai since the company's October 2009 launch to deliver and manage its full-length HD movies. EPIX is the leading next-generation, multi-platform entertainment service, delivering the latest movie blockbusters, new releases, library classics and original content across its premium, HD television channel, video-on-demand service and on the EpixHD.com website. EPIX supported a successful public launch of its service by leveraging a full suite of Akamai solutions, including dynamic streaming, Akamai Professional Services, Akamai NetStorage, Akamai's Open Video Player, Akamai EdgeScape for geotargeting and Akamai Media Analytics. EPIX delivers more than 200 full-length HD movie experiences online with the quality, speed and convenience demanded by today's consumers of digital media. Movie playback on EPIX seamlessly adapts to end-user machines with different capabilities, such as lower processing powers or slower Internet connections, giving consumers a smooth, uninterrupted playback experience online without sacrificing viewing quality.
"Customers are demanding to watch movies online," said Thomas Carpenter, vice president of operations and digital chief of staff for EPIX. "At EPIX, we are focused on enabling broadband delivery of our products, while preserving the cinematic quality of our titles. Akamai's first-rate distribution network, advanced technologies and dedicated professionals let us do just this - deliver a truly movie-worthy, HD experience to our viewers - in the broadband medium."
Sonic Solutions® (NASDAQ:SNIC), is leveraging Akamai to support its Roxio CinemaNow digital entertainment services, as the company's entertainment platform continues to expand its reach and deliver entertainment services to more connected devices. Akamai has supported a 93 percent increase in movie downloads by Sonic since November.
"The Roxio CinemaNow entertainment platform is helping to create a powerful new distribution channel for content owners and generate new opportunities for retailers and consumer electronic device manufacturers to connect with consumers," said Mark Ely, executive vice president of Strategy, Sonic Solutions. "Akamai is an important ally that allows us to meet the needs of our partners and ensure the highest quality viewing experience for the end user, regardless of where they are accessing and enjoying content."
Sonic relies on Akamai to power video streaming and downloads and to support the increasing demand for Roxio CinemaNow services that has resulted from the company's recent partnerships that have enabled thousands of new customers for Sonic. Sonic is leveraging Akamai's file download optimization for the storage of large files, as well as its Dynamic Site Accelerator to support new dynamic elements of the Roxio CinemaNow platform. The Akamai EdgePlatform help services like Roxio CinemaNow deliver large files efficiently with increased performance for end users who are downloading large multi-gigabyte files and increased download completion rates.
Akamai's Unique Architecture for High Throughput Media
To create a synonymous movie viewing experience in the online world, a 2-hour feature-length movie would need to be encoded at a bit rate of at least 6-8 Mbps, which would result in the file being a size of 5-8 GB. This presents numerous technical challenges to deliver such a high-quality, large file. For instance, delivering a file encoded at 6 Mbps to an audience of one Nielsen ratings point (1,102,000 households) would require 6.6 Terabits of sustained bandwidth, and that doesn't even take into account latency and network congestion.
A critical factor to enable high bit rate delivery of very large HD files is the proximity of the end-user to the server sending the file. As an example, the only way to achieve 10 to 20 Mbps throughput for typical PC end-users is if the server is less than 20 milliseconds away. The more latency, the longer it takes to download the file, which interrupts the viewing experience and results in a poor end-user experience. Compared with other centralized models, Akamai believes that the high quality content delivery services offered across its network is unmatched on a global scale.
The Akamai Difference
Akamai® provides market-leading managed services for powering video, dynamic transactions, and enterprise applications online. Having pioneered the content delivery market one decade ago, Akamai's services have been adopted by the world's most recognized brands across diverse industries. The alternative to centralized Web infrastructure, Akamai's global network of tens of thousands of distributed servers provides the scale, reliability, insight and performance for businesses to succeed online. Akamai has transformed the Internet into a more viable place to inform, entertain, interact, and collaborate. To experience The Akamai Difference, visit http://www.akamai.com.

Ireland's Allergy Standards Limited Adds LG Electronics to Host of Companies Making Allergy-Certified Consumer Products
LG's LuV300 Vacuum, SteamWasher(TM) and Dehumidifier Among Leading Allergy-Certified Products
WASHINGTON and DUBLIN, March 16 -- Allergy Standards Ltd. (ASL), an Ireland-based, physician-led global certification company, today announced that global technology leader LG Electronics has received ASL's Certification Mark on its new LuV300 vacuum with Kompressor® technology. ASL prepares independent global standards for testing a wide range of products from worldwide manufacturers to determine their suitability for asthmatics and individuals with associated allergies. LG's LuV300 vacuum successfully passed ASL's rigorous certification protocols.
The news was announced at a reception in Washington, DC, hosted by Enterprise Ireland, the Irish state agency responsible for the development and promotion of the indigenous Irish business sector. The event was one of several associated with a Trade and Investment Mission to the U.S. led by Ireland's Prime Minister, Brian Cowen.
With its new line of high-performance vacuum cleaners, LG builds upon the innovative allergen-reducing technology of the Allergiene(TM) feature in LG's SteamWasher(TM), the world's first clothes washer to earn ASL certification, and its new dehumidifiers, which are the world's ASL-certified models.
"Advancing the cause to create healthier indoor air is what drives us daily," said ASL's chief executive officer, Dr. John McKeon. "We're very pleased to welcome LG Electronics to the growing number of leading consumer product manufacturers in this responsible effort. Now more than ever, as homes are sealed to maximize energy efficiency, it's critical that the products we use are optimized to create the healthiest indoor air environments possible."
The LuV300's patented Kompressor vacuum technology utilizes the world's first motorized compression system and a larger bin to compress the dust intake and allows for the clean and simple disposal of compacted dust. This feature is beneficial to consumers seeking to reduce their exposure to dirt and allergens released into the air when emptying the dustbin, helping to assure that allergen exposure at home remains minimal after vacuuming.
LG's data shows that the new vacuum's powerful engine provides superior suction power, removing up to 99 percent of dust on floor surfaces, while the HEPA filter captures 99.97 percent of allergens such as dust mites and pet dander.
ASL pioneered the "asthma & allergy friendly(TM)" certification program in partnership with the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America and the Asthma Society of Canada. Companies certified by ASL bear the organization's Certification mark registered in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, proving that their products have undergone rigorous testing to determine their relative suitability for people with asthma.
In addition to the Luv300 vacuum, LG's SteamWashers with the exclusive Allergiene(TM) cycle also have received ASL's Certification Mark for removing 95 percent of common allergens such as dust mites and pet dander, from even the most delicate fabrics.

WALTHAM, Mass., March 16 -- Red Bend Software, the leader in Mobile Software Management (MSM), today announced support for Intel's next-generation handheld and smartphone platform, codenamed Moorestown.
Red Bend's vDirect Mobile(TM) device management (DM) software is the industry's leading independent DM client that is interoperable with any DM server supporting standards from the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA). It enables faster time to market for mobile devices that must comply with standards-based device management. This agreement builds upon the successful implementation of vDirect Mobile with Intel-embedded WiMAX chipsets announced in February 2009.
Deployed in tens of millions of mobile devices worldwide, vDirect Mobile is used to provision new subscribers, configure applications and network settings, manage software and deploy firmware-over-the-air (FOTA) updates. It is the first DM client to support the WiMAX Management Object used by the WiMAX Forum.
"Expanding our relationship with Intel from WiMAX to handhelds demonstrates the value that Red Bend's expertise in software updating and device management brings to our customers and their product offerings," said Yoram Salinger, CEO of Red Bend Software. "Our ability to work on any type of mobile device and with any mobile platform gives us the flexibility to create a standards-based OMA-DM solution to meet our customers' specific requirements."
"The Intel Atom processor is accelerating innovation in the mobile space as devices become increasingly faster and smarter," said Pankaj Kedia, director of global ecosystem programs in Intel Corporation's Ultra Mobility Group. "Red Bend's device management solution will make it easier and more cost-effective to manage Intel Atom-based handhelds and smartphones."
Intel licensed vDirect Mobile for use in its WiMAX/WiFi Link 5350, which was embedded in new laptops based on Intel® Centrino® 2 Processor Technology. For details, read the following press release: Red Bend Announces Device Management Client for Embedded Intel WiMAX Chipsets.

4th Screen Taps Vertica for Real-Time Ad Campaign Analytics
SAN FRANCISCO, March 16 -- Customers of 4th Screen Advertising, a global mobile advertising network , can now see and improve how well their mobile ad campaigns perform by divining massive amounts of campaign data in near real time, thanks to the help of the ultra-fast Vertica Analytic Database. Vertica announced its latest customer success story at the Enterprise Data World conference this week in San Francisco.
4th Screen helps mobile operators and mobile publishers monetize traffic to their portals through mobile advertising. Mpression, 4th Screen's proprietary mobile ad server provides a single point of contact for media agencies and brands wishing to buy advertising across a range of mobile Internet sites.
The company had previously relied on a Microsoft SQL Server 2005-based data warehouse for its data needs. But due to the skyrocketing volume of data the company was amassing daily, combined with growing demands from clients for more sophisticated, granular and timely campaign analysis capabilities, the data warehouse's performance quickly hit the wall. 4th Screen currently aggregates more than a half billion ad requests each month, and the volume continues to rise.
"Mobile advertisers can no longer afford to wait days for reports or rely on stale data to make critical business decisions about their ad campaigns. Vertica is enabling us to expose huge volumes of data directly to clients with which they can gain insight about their ad buying efficacy within seconds. Clients love having this kind of business intelligence power in their own hands," said Jason Cooper, product director for 4th Screen Advertising.
Using Vertica, 4th Screen has developed a set of online analytic tools for brands and mobile publishers such as Virgin Mobile, Shazam, The Guardian and Meteor to deliver more effective and ROI-driven mobile advertising campaigns. A new Global Ad Planner tool provides a customer-facing portal that allows brands and agencies to dig deeply into campaign data so they can better plan ad campaigns that fit their target audience. The tool lets them quickly drill down into data aggregated across mobile networks using a variety of consumer usage parameters such as country, region, time of day, handset type, Wi-Fi traffic versus mobile operator traffic and more.
Another tool provides ad publishers a Web-based dashboard for determining revenue projections of ad campaigns, as well as how consumers are interacting with each ad. And a new campaign optimization tool lets users see how current campaigns are performing in near-real-time so they can instantly fine-tune their campaigns in response to unexpected changes or events.
For example, 4th Screen customer Shazam, the world's leading mobile music discovery provider, is using the analytics portal for targeting ads to top European customers. Combining music tagging data with mobile targeting parameters such as handset type and time of day, advertisers can target consumers based on their music tastes, for example by artist name or by individual track names.
After evaluating a number of alternative database approaches, the company selected Vertica when it realized no traditional row-based RDBMS could scale and support its long-term growth with sufficient query performance, Cooper added.
Vertica is a true MPP, column-oriented database built to handle massive analytic workloads such as those experienced by 4th Screen. With its aggressive data compression and columnar storage, the Vertica Analytic Database enables 4th Screen clients to analyze much larger volumes of campaign data and run queries orders of magnitude faster than conventional relational databases. The Vertica-powered data warehouse currently houses 5 TB of data across a three-node cluster and it provides a 10X performance improvement over the previous SQL Server system.
"4th Screen carries more premium mobile display advertising in Europe than any other competing system. With Vertica, the company's clients can now improve the ROI of their ad spend by pinpointing their exact customers, right down to the time of day, gender, age, behavior, operator and handset. This important win extends Vertica's growing market share in the fast-paced mobile marketing industry," said Jerry Held, executive chairman of Vertica.

Microsoft Announces Hardware-Accelerated HTML5, Pushes Boundaries on Web and Cloud Development
Microsoft releases first platform preview for Windows Internet Explorer 9, highlights commitments to jQuery and OData.
LAS VEGAS, March 16 -- Industry standards and innovation took center stage at MIX10, as Microsoft Corp. made a series of announcements that underscore the company's commitment to interoperability and performance on the Web. Dean Hachamovitch, general manager of Internet Explorer at Microsoft, unveiled the Internet Explorer 9 Platform Preview including expanded support for HTML5, hardware-accelerated graphics and text, and a new JavaScript engine. Together these allow developers to use the same markup and deliver graphically and functionally rich Web applications that take advantage of modern PC hardware through a modern operating system.
Microsoft also announced that it will contribute to the development of new features and enhancements in the jQuery JavaScript Library and shared the release of new software development kits (SDKs) for the Open Data Protocol (OData) that make it easier for developers to access data from the cloud to create more compelling cross-platform Web applications.
Raising Developer Expectations With Hardware Acceleration, Increased Interoperability
As part of its commitment to interoperability, Microsoft detailed its support for a number of HTML5 specifications, including CSS3, Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), XHTML parsing, and the video and audio tags using industry-standard (H.264/MPEG4 and MP3/AAC) codecs, among others. In addition, Microsoft demonstrated a new JavaScript engine that uses the multiple cores of today's modern chips to effectively manage computing resources and improve Web performance. By combining increased interoperability with a new JavaScript engine and Direct 2D technology, Internet Explorer 9 enables Web developers to provide users with richer experiences that render more quickly and consistently.
"I am very happy with Microsoft's commitment to the HTML Working Group and to HTML5," said Philippe Le Hegaret, W3C, Domain Leader.
"Internet Explorer 9 is the first browser to take standard Web patterns that developers use and run them better on modern PCs through Windows," Hachamovitch said.
Starting at MIX10, developers also will be able to track Microsoft's progress and provide direct feedback on the Internet Explorer 9 Platform Preview by evaluating new code refreshes approximately every eight weeks leading up to the beta release. Developers can download the Internet Explorer 9 Platform Preview at http://www.ietestdrive.com/.
"Internet Explorer 9 enabling GPU-accelerated HTML5 is a milestone for visual computing," said Drew Henry, general manager of GeForce and ION GPU business unit at NVIDIA Corp. "By harnessing the power of NVIDIA GPUs, Internet Explorer 9 removes the glass ceiling for Web developers, enabling them to build graphically rich, high-performing Web applications."
Increased Support of Client Development Through the jQuery JavaScript Library
As part of Microsoft's broad engagement with open source communities, Corporate Vice President Scott Guthrie today announced that Microsoft is investing resources to contribute to the development of the jQuery JavaScript Library to help improve the development process of standards-based Web applications. Microsoft will also work to provide better interoperability between ASP.NET and the jQuery JavaScript Library by enhancing ASP.NET so .NET developers can better incorporate jQuery capabilities. In addition, Microsoft will actively promote and distribute versions of the jQuery JavaScript Library by packaging it with popular products such as Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 and ASP.NET MVC 2. As a first step, Microsoft will contribute a templating engine to the jQuery JavaScript Library Team to simplify Web applications.
Creating Compelling User Experiences, Powered by the Cloud
To enable developers to build immersive, cross-platform Web and mobile applications that use data delivered from the cloud, Microsoft also released SDKs for OData, an HTTP and Atom-based approach to data portability, for a number of languages and platforms including .NET, Java, PHP, Objective-C (iPhone and Mac) and JavaScript. In addition, Microsoft announced the second Community Technology Preview (CTP) of Microsoft code-named "Dallas," an information marketplace powered by the Windows Azure platform, which provides developers with access to third-party datasets that can be consumed by Web and mobile applications. By making content and data available with an OData feed via "Dallas," developers can access and monetize their data under their terms and pricing, which can be can built into applications to deliver unique user experiences.
Today, developers can take advantage of more than 30 datasets from content providers, including NAVTEQ, Pitney Bowes Business Insight, Weather Central and Zillow.com, available on the "Dallas" information marketplace. Developers can access the OData SDK at http://www.odata.org/ and download "Dallas" CTP2 at http://www.microsoft.com/Dallas.

Verizon's FiOS Customers in Indiana, Oregon and Washington to Experience Enhanced Technical Service, Personal Care, Direct Contact
New 'Verizon Service Commitment' Aims to Proactively Address Questions, Ensure Satisfaction for New FiOS Consumers
FORT WAYNE, Ind., March 16 -- With a goal of providing the best possible customer service experience, Verizon is introducing its Service Commitment to FiOS customers in Indiana, Oregon and Washington. Residential customers making the switch to FiOS TV, Internet and voice services can count on smooth, no-hassle service as they join the tens of thousands of other customers who have already chosen Verizon as their home-entertainment provider in these areas.
"Verizon's FiOS is clearly the better choice, and - contrary to our cable competitor's claims - Verizon remains committed to FiOS in these areas," said James V. O'Rourke, Verizon's North Central area president. "The Verizon Service Commitment is our promise to FiOS customers that their transition to more advanced home-entertainment services will be smooth and easy."
The centerpiece of the Service Commitment is direct communication between the FiOS customer and the Verizon team.
Under the commitment, the Verizon technician who installed the service will be available to ensure the customer's service is working and to answer questions from Day One. New customers get a direct phone number to reach the technician who installed their service, should they have any questions after the work is done.
Verizon service employees will also check in by phone with customers within the first 30 to 45 days of installation to answer any questions, review the customers' first bill and ensure they know how to reach Verizon round-the-clock for any future needs.
Additionally, ongoing training is available at select area Verizon Plus stores, where customers can come in with equipment or system questions and get hands-on demonstrations and answers to their questions.
The Service Commitment is part of a program to assure that Verizon customers have the best experience. For example, Verizon has simplified its bill format to more clearly present each element of bundled FiOS services, taxes, fees and additional charges for video on demand and set-top boxes, among others. The company has also established 1-800-VERIZON (1-800-837-4966) as a single point of contact for all communications regarding Verizon FiOS TV, Internet and other services.
Other highlights of the Verizon Service Commitment are:
-- Premium FiOS installation with appointments to fit the customer's
schedule.
-- Connection of up to three TVs and one personal computer or laptop,
plus a wireless router.
-- Setup and in-home training on how to use the new FiOS services.
The proactive call program has thus far been well-received by customers, who are pleased with Verizon's efforts to make personal contact and satisfy any questions or outstanding issues they may have. Verizon employees make three separate attempts to reach the customer; if no contact is made after the third call, a callback message is left.
"Results thus far confirm for us that the proactive calling is greatly improving our communications and our customer service experience," said O'Rourke. "As the Service Commitment is fully implemented, we anticipate customers will enjoy an even higher level of satisfaction with their FiOS experience."

New Line of IBM Servers Lifts Performance, Efficiency To Allow New Levels of Consolidation
ARMONK, N.Y., March 16 -- IBM (NYSE:IBM) today unveiled new System x servers that offer increased memory and can help improve efficiency to allow customers to better exploit virtualization and support more sophisticated workloads.
IBM has completely revamped its line up of two-socket x86 servers. The all-new line delivers 50% more cores and can provide 40%-60% better performance [1] than previous generations, enabling users in some scenarios to consolidate some 20 servers down to one and potentially to recoup acquisition costs in as little as three months.[2]
The new System x M3 and Blade Center systems include:
-- Two new rack servers, the x3650 M3 and the x3550 M3 deliver 50% more
memory capacity and 60% more internal storage than the previous IBM
generation.[3] The x3650 M3 is also 50% more power-efficient than the
previous generation, which was the industry leader in power
efficiency.
-- Two new enterprise tower servers -- the x3500 M3 and x3400 M3 -- that
feature twice the storage capacity of previous generations and lower
power and facilities costs.[4]
-- The BladeCenter HS22 and the virtualization-optimized BladeCenter
HS22V, which allows clients to fit 30%-50% more virtual machines on a
single blade server.[5] Both feature new memory that consumes 15%
less power.[6] The HS22V runs Java applications up to 43% faster than
IBM's prior-generation, two-socket blades.[7]
-- A new iDataPlex server, the dx360 M3, increases iDataPlex compute
performance by 50% for HPC workloads.[8] It is the first two-socket
server to achieve 3,000 operations per watt, a 36% improvement from
the previous generation of iDataPlex servers.[9] New redundant power
allows the new iDataPlex server to remain running even during service
to power supplies.
The new systems run on Intel Xeon(TM) 5600-series processors.
The new systems ride a wave of market share growth for IBM, which gained more revenue share than any of the major x86 server vendors in each quarter of 2009 and now holds nearly 20 percent share -- a 3.5 point year-over-year gain, according to IDC. IBM also significantly outperformed the blade market in 4Q09, recording 64 percent revenue growth in blades and gaining 5.7 points, according to IDC.[10]
Today's news builds on IBM's announcement earlier this month of new eX5 servers that improve the economics of operating enterprise-sized, x86-based systems. IBM has now renewed its entire portfolio of x86-based systems to meet the broadest set of client needs.
The M3 systems take advantage of integration with IBM middleware to offer a sophisticated suite of systems management tools, including:
-- IBM's Systems Director software -- Allows users to pre-configure
servers, remotely re-purpose systems and set up automatic updates and
recoveries.
-- Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) -- Next-generation BIOS
firmware.
-- Integrated Management Module (IMM) -- Manages, monitors, troubleshoots
and repairs servers from anywhere.
-- IBM ToolsCenter - Ideal for small and medium businesses, ToolsCenter
simplifies the acquisition and usage of system management tools with a
single webpage to acquire tools.
