Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on June 20, 2003 at 6:32:27 AM
An interesting article and question by Nivram. He has testing a few heatsink pastes and a standard and a copper cooler.

Now what do you get if you have some artic silver and a good heatsink? A nice article.

Disgusted

Poster: Aron Schatz

Let me just have a little rant right here. When a company does not give you the light of day, what does that say about a company? Not even replying to a fax or an email.

I must have sent nearly 30 emails out, and only 4 companies responded. I don't care if I get put down, just give me a damn response. I don't know what else to do. Any ideas?

Athlon 64 in August?

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on June 19, 2003 at 5:07:37 PM
Digitimes looks to have the info that AMD will release the Althon 64, the Clawhammer, in August. The Clawhammer is the first consumer 64 bit CPU.

Quote

According to AMD, it has not changed the launch schedule. However, sources at first-tier motherboard companies such as Asustek Computer and Gigabyte Technology confirmed that AMD disclosed that it will begin supplying two desktop-use Athlon 64 processors, the 3100+ and 3400+, in August. However, given that shipments will reach only a projected 200,000-300,000 units by year-end, board makers expect little impact on Pentium 4-platform products in the short run.

Anti Spam law push

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on June 18, 2003 at 4:57:24 PM
More and more companies and countries are jumping on the anti spam bandwagon. The latest was Microsoft. There is a large force behind this movement, maybe something will get done!

Quote

"Aggressive moves by any large company against spammers who break the law are very welcome," said Stephen Cobb, senior vice president of ePrivacy Group, which this week released spam-fighting software for Internet service providers. "However...right now ISPs are telling us they see a lot of spam coming from Microsoft's own Hotmail servers, which are being abused by spammers. And a lot of people would probably say that would be the best place for the company to start cleaning up spam."

The first DDR-2 boards will make their way in 2004. Intel is pushing ahead with their Grantsdale board. A new socket comes with it.

Quote

The first CPUs to be used with the Grantsdale chipset will be 3.6GHz Pentium 4 processors on a Prescott 90nm core. These CPUs will be released together with the Grantsdale chipset family, featuring 1MB L2 cache, Hyper-Threading Technology and 800MHz FSB (front-side bus).

Broadband growth still strong

The broadband market is still seeing high growth numbers. Comcast has a reason to charge $45+ for cable internet. Bastards.

Quote

The number of broadband, or high-speed, subscribers swelled by 49 percent in May compared with the same period last year, while the number of narrowband users dropped 12 percent, according to the lastest returns from Internet measurement firm Nielsen/NetRatings.

SCO sues IBM for $3 BILLION!!!

Poster: Aron Schatz

BILLION! The whole useless thing here.

Quote

SCO seeks at least $1 billion in damages from IBM's alleged breach of its contract with SCO; another $1 billion for breach of the Unix contract signed by Sequent, which IBM acquired in 1999; and another $1 billion for unfair competition. SCO also seeks more for misappropriation of trade secrets and punitive damages.

Moving two steps backward, the Counsil of Europe is making a law requiring all media outlets to allow the person(s) that were ciritized a 'right of reply'. This is truely absured given the nature of the internet. I guess it is a US thing for free speech.

Quote

The United States once had a similar rule, which applied only to broadcasters, called the Fairness Doctrine. In a 1969 a Supreme Court case called Red Lion v. Federal Communications Commission, the justices gave liberal author Fred Cook the right to reply to criticism from a conservative broadcaster on Pennsylvania radio station WGCB. Eventually, President Ronald Reagan nixed the idea in the mid-1980s, citing the First Amendment protection of freedom of speech and the rule's possible "chilling effect" on controversial speech. (When faced with the onerous requirement of providing a right to reply, many broadcasters shied away from anything controversial.)

Do not spam lists

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on June 13, 2003 at 5:19:51 PM
Finally. Just like there are new Do not call lists (which work, I've gotten much less calls over the months). Now these do not spam lists enable people to sue spammers!

Quote

Schumer's bill, however, is the only proposal so far in Congress that would let any "recipient adversely affected by a violation of this act" bring a lawsuit in state court that would recover statutory damages of up to $1,000 per e-mail message. Internet service providers would be immune from such lawsuits, and class action suits would not be permitted.

AMD transistor tech

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on June 12, 2003 at 4:33:56 PM
Intel isn't the only one worried about transistors in the future. AMD is preaching their new ways, including Silicon-on-insulator and nickel-silicide transistors. Using these methods can speed up transistors already being made.

Quote

In the second paper, AMD showed how it experimentally boosted performance another 20 percent to 25 percent on the nickel transistors by adding strained silicon. Strained silicon involves physically stretching the silicon atoms apart from one another on select chip layers so electrons can travel more freely and rapidly. Stretching is accomplished by inserting germanium atoms, the melons of the chip world, into layers of apricot-sized silicon atoms.

The device runs at twice the speed at half the power of current solutions, the company said. The technology can provide an aggregate bandwidth of 6.4GB/s per device, achieved with a 1.6GB/s per pin data rate.

Tri-gate transistors

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on June 11, 2003 at 5:01:50 PM
Intel is upping the time table for new types of transistors that will help to follow Moore's Law into the future. Moore's law says that transistor counts on CPUs will double every 2.5 years.

Quote

Unfortunately, small transistors leak electricity, something that leads to poor battery life and excess internal heat. Tri-Gate transistors ameliorate that situation by increasing the surface area of the gate, which controls the flow of electricity. Traditional gates are flat, and electricity flows like a stream directly beneath it. Tri-Gates are shaped like a tunnel and electricity flows on the internal surface of the arch. More surface area leads to a more stable flow of electricity, which in turn can lead to greater performance, less leakage or both.

Is PNG Doomed?

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on June 9, 2003 at 5:35:00 PM
If you have noticed (or not), GIF isn't use anywhere that there can be thumbnails made. This is because Unisys still owns the patent to LZW, the compression for GIF and wanted royalties for it. Their patent ends this month. PNG actually has a bunch of problems right now, since GIF is going to be free, why do we need PNG? Sure, PNG gives a bunch of nice things, but it doesn't render alpha channels well. We'll see if it picks up.

Quote

Lilley conceded that PNG is not for everything. Photographs are better saved as JPEG (pronounced "jay peg"), or Joint Photographic Experts Group, files, and GIF offers animation capabilities that PNG was not designed to provide--though a sister specification to PNG called MNG ("ming"), or Multiple-Image Network Graphics, does support animation.

Europe screws itself

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on June 9, 2003 at 5:28:24 PM
The EU and its member nations are now adding VAT (Value Added Tax, Sales Tax to us in the US) to all things purchased online. That means that many companies have an even lower margin of profit and might even not sell to Europe. I'm interested to hear some of the European member's thoughts on this.

Quote

The law adds a 15 percent to 25 percent levy on select Internet transactions such as software and music downloads, monthly subscriptions to an Internet service provider and on any product purchased through an online auction anywhere in the 15-member bloc of nations.
