ASG Superconductors Is to Build the World's Most Powerful Magnets to Study the Brain
GENOA, Italy, October 26, 2016 /PRNewswire/ --
The magnets will create a magnetic field 260,888 times more powerful than the one
generated by the Earth, for a high energy magnetic resonance system designed to produce
even more detailed images of the brain, at Gachon University Gil Medical Center in Incheon
(South Korea), which specialises in neurological studiesÂ
ASG produces superconducting magnets for basic scientific research and for the medical
(hadrontherapy and MRI) and energy sectors (FCL anti-blackout systems)Â
ASG Superconductors, a company owned by the Malacalza family with production sites in
Italy, has been awarded a contract by Gachon University Gil Medical Center in Incheon
South Korea (GUGMC) to build Ultra High Field (UHF) superconducting magnets. The magnets
produced in Italy by ASG will be used to create an extremely powerful magnetic field of
11.74 Tesla, or 260,888 times stronger that the earth's magnetic field, making it possible
to acquire images at a high level of spatial resolution that will push the frontier of
neurological research beyond the limits imposed by today's imaging systems, which use
lower energy magnetic fields.
The Gachon magnetic resonance system will be the medical instrument with the highest
energy field ever used in medical research on human beings. This project is supported by a
grant of the Korea Health Technology R&D Project through the Korea Health Industry
Development Institute (KHIDI), funded by the Ministry for Health and Welfare, Korea. The
magnets, weighing about 70 tonnes, will use over 600 km of superconducting cable in a
production process that draws on high-tech computation tools and mechanical, cryogenic and
magnetic engineering software.
The contract will be performed on a joint basis with Korean company Magnex Scientific
Inc and is worth over EUR10 million for ASG, representing yet another example of the
company's skills in the medical magnets sector. ASG has already produced numerous magnets
for applications in the field of hadrontherapy and oncological radiotherapy (cancer care),
for customers like the CNAO in Pavia, Alberta Health Services in Edmonton, Canada, and
other operators in this sector. The magnets' design, technology and production drawing on
skills built up over more than 50 years working on major research projects including
LHC-CERN and ITER.
Established in 1958, the GUGMC is a medical foundation established through the
generosity of Dr Lee Gil Ya. Over the years it has become one of Asia's most important
medical centers and a leading development center for magnetic resonance and radiology
technology.
The technology market just keeps progressing faster and faster. Last year, we reviewed the 935L from D-Link with a $120 price point. Fast forward to now and the 936L has been released with better overall features and a $70 price point to boot. It's a win for consumers looking for an easily setup security camera.Next Page »
Transformative Drawing Software Lets Architects, Designers, Creatives, Illustrators and Scientists Sketch Visual Ideas in 3D; Launching on Microsoft Surface Devices in Late 2016
NEW YORK, Oct. 26, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Mental Canvas today unveiled a new graphic and media design system that pushes the boundaries of sketch beyond the constraints of pencil and paper. Mental Canvas allows creators to illustrate ideas and depict design concepts freely in virtual space without sacrificing the individuality of the artist's style. Today, Mental Canvas released a Player app in the Windows Store that allows people to explore spatial drawings created using the Mental Canvas authoring software, which will be released later this year.
"Technology has revolutionized text, photography and music, but drawing has largely remained unchanged since the Renaissance as today's illustration tools merely simulate drawing on paper," said Julie Dorsey, founder and CEO at Mental Canvas and computer science professor at Yale University. "Mental Canvas reimagines the sketch and brings it into the digital age with an entirely new set of capabilities to accelerate the creative process and enhance idea sharing."
The future of drawing on Microsoft Surface
A tool for everyone that draws when exploring and communicating ideas, Mental Canvas supports sketching on and navigating amongst multiple canvases situated in a virtual space. The resulting interactive and animated "scene" can be shared on any device with a web browser. Surface's impressive processing power, integrated and sensitive pen, haptic Surface Dial, gorgeous PixelSense(TM) multi-touch display, and substantial memory, helps Mental Canvas deliver its vision for the future of digital drawing.
-- Draw it as you imagine it: Sketching ideas on canvases situated
throughout space communicates far more than any single drawing ever can.
-- Create guided tours: By saving important views, one can create
personalized, animated tours through any scene.
-- Think and rethink your work: Quickly switching between viewing and
drawing modes enables creators to refine their designs at all stages of
the creative process. Edit even the most complex designs in minutes.
-- If you can sketch, you can Canvas. Unlike existing 3D modeling and CAD
tools that have steep learning curves, Mental Canvas is intuitive,
allowing the user to sketch freely in space as naturally as they can
sketch on paper.
"Mental Canvas pushes the boundaries of sketch, bringing an element of exploration that's just not possible with pen and paper," said Panos Panay, corporate vice president of devices at Microsoft. "This is a great example of hardware and software coming together to harness pen, touch and the new Surface Dial to help architects, designers and engineers bring their ideas to life in a more natural and personal way."
Speed the creative process
Mental Canvas allows creators to explore, experiment and embellish anywhere on the path from idea to realization-- saving both time and money on the development of visual concepts. The rich and interactive scenes developed on Mental Canvas are a new media type that can be exported to the web, incorporated into e-books, displays, commercials and games.
-- Architects, designers and engineers will use Mental Canvas to develop
concepts and communicate them to clients. A single Metal Canvas
integrates hundreds of concept drawings into a single cohesive vision.
If a picture is worth a thousand words, a Mental Canvas scene is worth
thousands of pictures.
-- Digital agencies, filmmakers and advertising firms will use Mental
Canvas for storyboarding and to create pitch decks, developing their
story and message on the fly, while generating animatics in seconds, not
weeks.
-- Professional illustrators, storytellers and game developers will
appreciate the software's complete workflow and ability to take ideas
from a "flat" concept to final polish with a natural "drawing"
interface.
-- Scientists and teachers can use Mental Canvas to communicate structure
and connections between abstract concepts in an interactive and
annotatable format.
The Mental Canvas team
The core technology behind Mental Canvas was originally developed by a research team at Yale University led by Professor Dorsey. With the creative freedom of a research environment and support of multiple grants from The National Science Foundation Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, Dorsey and her team developed the product and launched the company without any additional outside funding. The company has two awarded and four pending patents.
Availability and requirements
Explore sample scenes by downloading the Mental Canvas Player app on Windows Store today.
The Mental Canvas authoring software will be available on Microsoft Surface devices by the end of 2016.
Mental Canvas will be available globally, in English and Canadian French.
About Mental Canvas
Mental Canvas LLC is a privately- held, software startup company founded in June 2013 to commercialize spatial drawing technology originating from Prof. Julie Dorsey's research laboratory at Yale University's Computer Science Department. Mental Canvas is funded through a series of non-dilutive small business awards from the National Science Foundation's Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, which catalyzes private sector commercialization of the most promising technological innovations.

Additions include new transfer options and three new cloud file sharing integrations
PLANO, Texas, Oct. 26, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Fonality gives the term "unified communications" another boost with the addition of six new features built into its Heads Up Display(TM) (HUD) platform.
New HUD Web capabilities include two new transfer options, recording downloads, inline audio controls for recordings, and expanded notifications. The company also introduced an entirely new file sharing solution. Expanding on existing file sharing options, users now have a new interface that provides them the complete set of options to instantly share files with colleagues. Users can now share files from their computer or from major file sharing solutions such as Box, Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive and Dropbox.
"Our customers' files increasingly live in the cloud just like their phone system does. Our new file sharing solution provides the usability and functionality that will help customers collaborate better and with ease," says Ali Rizvi, Fonality's director of product management. "At the same time, our unanswered queue call transfer feature is invaluable. We've just handed customers the power to sell and service better with no additional cost to them."
Fonality features get a +6
From the foundation of built-in and fully integrated, Fonality's industry-leading HUD Web now gives users a power up with:
+1 Unanswered Queue Call Transfer. Exclusively for Fonality customers, when a queue call goes unanswered too long, queue managers can now transfer directly to an available agent or another team member. This feature enables Fonality customers to instantly reduce the number of abandoned calls and long wait times for callers.
+2 Warm Transfer. Extends the existing transfer option by allowing the person transferring a call to let the recipient know who's calling and why. This greatly improves the customer experience, expedites customer service, or even just allows the transferring party to make sure they're sending the caller to the right place.
+3 Recording Downloads. Users can now download voicemails and On-demand Recordings from within the VM & Recordings tab within HUD. Downloaded recordings can be saved or easily shared as appropriate. This is particularly useful for users who do not subscribe to Voicemail Transcription or who may have deleted the transcription email with recording. It's also great for saving training recordings or customer records.
+4 Inline Audio Controls. All voicemail and call recording controls are now inline. The new recording download option is joined by Play, Call, and Delete for recordings. Voicemails add a fourth option, Mark Read/Unread.
+5 Notification Count. For each missed chat, call or voicemail, the Fonality favicon (the "bar F" taken from the Fonality logo) on the user's browser tab transforms into a counter that's easy to spot even while working in other tabs. (This popular new notification supplements screen pop notifications that alert users to check HUD or answer a call when working in other web programs.)
+6 File Sharing. Sharing a file from desktop, Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, Box or Dropbox is as easy hovering over an avatar photo and clicking Share File or clicking a paper clip image in an individual or group chat entry box. Choose where the file lives, and watch it go. Oh, yeah. Drag and drop still works, too.
You say you don't know HUD?
You should. These new features join an award-winning UC and business phone solution. Fonality's HUD platform gives users a "single pane of glass" where they can manage their business communication. Fonality is consistently recognized as a UC industry leader. In fact, HUD took home the 2016 Golden Bridge Award and was named TMC's 2016 INTERNET TELEPHONY Product of the Year.
A Fonality survey conducted by Google Consumer Survey found that as much as 75 percent of time wasted can be recovered by implementing a cloud-based UC platform, which means a company employing roughly 50 knowledge workers could save as much as $942,500 annually.
HUD is also almost endlessly customizable starting with add-ons like Video Collaboration, Voicemail Transcription and Advanced Call Center licenses. Through the power of integrations, Fonality also works with a range of additional tools from Salesforce to Zipwhip business SMS text messaging.

Appmobi Extends Protection Center Platform to Defend IoT Devices
New IoT security solution uses machine learning to identify and resolve DDoS attacks and other cyber threats in real time.
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y., Oct. 26, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobile security company Appmobi announced today a first-of-its-kind security solution for IoT devices to address the growing IoT security crisis.
The Appmobi Protection Center, originally designed for mobile apps, uses machine learning to automatically identify security threats to IoT devices and a customizable rules-based engine to automatically resolve potential IoT attacks.
As the IoT ecosystem rapidly expands, security issues are becoming more and more prevalent. IoT breaches can have profound impacts on both the internet and in the physical world. Internet-connected security systems, cameras, appliances, thermostats, and personal medical devices may already be part of a botnet consisting of millions of infected devices that was used to launch the biggest DDoS attack known to date, with peaks of over 1 Tbps of traffic. IoT attacks are not just isolated to in-house devices, security vulnerabilities in the Tesla Model S allowed attackers to remotely attack the vehicle from its internal Web browser without laying a finger on the car.
Although it's required in many regulatory environments to have a comprehensive security strategy throughout an IoT product lifecycle, embedded IoT devices are often low-interaction. When end users don't spend much time directly interfacing with the device, detecting threats or security breaches is difficult. This applies to device manufacturers, OS and application developers, as well as IoT frameworks and development platforms.
"The problem is not very different from what we have seen in the mobile world. Little to no real-time visibility to cyber attacks, and no clear way to resolve them once identified, is the Achilles heel of these IoT devices," Appmobi CEO Mark Stutzman said. "There are also millions of devices deployed; it's simply impossible for a security or IT team to monitor and resolve these threats manually. Appmobi automates both the monitoring and resolution while alerting teams of the threat - in real time."
To this end, Appmobi will be releasing an IoT version of its Protection Center platform on a variety of platforms and languages to bring the power of Protection Center to IoT. The same automated, real-time monitoring powered by machine learning and automated remediation from our mobile Protection Center Platform will be available for IoT integration teams. By adding a few lines of code, IT teams will be able to monitor IP-connected IoT devices using a set of predefined and customizable rules that identify any suspicious behavior, malicious activity, or hack attempts. Rule-based alerts and remediation triggering will let security teams automatically stop IoT attacks cold.
Device manufacturers and IoT developers who would like to participate in our early Release Program should contact Appmobi at info@appmobi.com and for more information, visit https://appmobi.com/iot-protection-center.

DETROIT and LAS VEGAS, Oct. 26, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- General Motors and IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced a partnership to bring the power of OnStar and IBM Watson together to create OnStar Go, the auto industry's first cognitive mobility platform. Starting in early 2017, OnStar is expected to give millions of GM drivers the ability to connect and interact with their favorite brands. The platform will deliver personalized content through the dashboard and other digital channels supported by the OnStar Go ecosystem to make the most of time spent in the car.
Combining OnStar's industry leading vehicle connectivity and data capabilities with IBM Watson APIs will create experiences that allow drivers and passengers to achieve greater levels of efficiency and safety. These experiences could include avoiding traffic when you're low on fuel, then activating a fuel pump and paying from the dash; ordering a cup of coffee on the go; or getting news and in-vehicle entertainment tailored to your personality and location in real time.
"On average, people in the U.S. spend more than 46 minutes per day in their car* and are looking for ways to optimize their time," said Phil Abram, Executive Director, GM Connected Products and Strategy. "By leveraging OnStar's connectivity and combining it with the power of Watson, we're looking to provide safer, simpler and better solutions to make our customers' mobility experience more valuable and productive."
The GM/IBM partnership will expand the existing OnStar AtYourService offers and deals platform by launching new capabilities supported by OnStar Go with IBM Watson. These capabilities will be available in more than two million 4G LTE connected vehicles and millions of GM vehicle brand app-enabled mobile devices in the U.S. by the end of 2017.
With the customer's consent, Watson will learn the driver's preferences, apply machine learning and sift through data to recognize patterns in their decisions and habits. This information will allow brand and marketing professionals working with IBM and OnStar to deliver individualized location-based interactions that directly impact their target audiences. Companies in retail, fuel, hospitality, media and entertainment, restaurants and travel and transportation and more can use OnStar Go to build individualized mobile, in-vehicle experiences for a growing population of connected drivers that opt-in.
The new cognitive mobility platform enables brands to design Watson-enabled consumer experiences. Examples of potential uses include:

to remind a working father to pick up diapers and formula at the
pharmacy a few miles before his exit, so he won't have to leave the
house again once he gets home.
-- The platform employs Watson Tradeoff Analytics to give a traveling
foodie dining recommendations from celebrity chefs when driving in a new
city.
-- Watson Retrieve and Rank, used by OnStar Go, lets the driver know that
their order is ready for pickup at a nearby retail store and one of the
store's employees will load their purchases into the car.
"IBM and GM are changing the whole notion of where valuable, daily rituals occur. The combination of IBM Watson and industry-leading OnStar connectivity will enable vehicles with intelligent branded skills and services to empower drivers and passengers," said Paul Papas, Global Leader, IBM iX. Molex Nano-Fit power connectors now available from RS Components
New series of power connectors delivers fully protected header terminals in a small package to deliver PCB space savings -- now available from RS in small and production-order quantities
SINGAPORE, Oct.26, 2016 /PRNewswire/ - RS Components (RS), the trading brand of Electrocomponents plc (LSE:ECM), the global distributor for engineers, has introduced a new addition to its Molex range of high-quality connectors. The new Molex Nano-Fit(TM) power connector system is suitable for use across a wide range of market sectors including aerospace and defence, automotive, telecommunications, medical, industrial and home appliances. The range is available in two batch sizes to provide customers with high purchasing flexibility, including small-quantity packs for R&D and prototyping, as well as larger quantity packs for production.
Designers of power applications are often faced with a choice between headers that have exposed terminals and thereby susceptible to damage, or large fully isolated headers that take up too much space. However, the Nano-Fit series of high-density connectors provides fully isolated header terminals that protects against potential damage of terminals during handling and mating. It is supplied in a small package that can deliver up to 69% in PCB space saving, making it the smallest fully isolated header available in the market. The connectors also offer different mechanical keying options, which enable reduced risk in cross mating while improving assembly speed with colour-coding logic.
The Nano-Fit power connector series is the newest and the smallest member of Molex's Fit Family of connectors, which offers a variety of features to maximise current capacity, reliability and space saving. The Fit family includes a number of connector series designed to provide wire-to board and wire-to-wire solutions where high current rating is required. It includes the Mega-Fit(TM) series, which is capable of handling up to 23A, and the Micro-Fit 3.0(TM) series, which has a pitch of 3.00mm.
Other features of the Nano-Fit series include optional terminal position assurance (TPA), which reduces 'terminal backout' by ensuring the terminals are fully seated in the housing. The ultra-low mate force terminal also reduces operator fatigue and improves assembly compliance for high-circuit applications, and the positive-lock housing with anti-snag design ensures that mated connector assemblies will not accidentally disengage. An audible click is provided while mating and the latch is protected from damage due to wire snags. A retention tang and contact rib help to maintain stable contact, and the terminal interface is provided with four points of contact for long-term performance and reliability.

- New Cloud Services Apply Cognitive Capabilities to Cloud Video Technology to Help Uncover New Data and Insights for Increasing Audience Engagement
- Delivers Differentiated, Customized Viewing Experiences by Providing Deeper Understanding of Video Content and Audience Preferences
LAS VEGAS, Oct. 26, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM (NYSE: IBM) today unveiled new Watson-powered cognitive services for its Cloud Video technology that are designed to transform how organizations unlock data-rich insights for video content and audiences. The new services can help deliver differentiated, personalized viewing experiences for consumers.
Digital video is a booming area for content but remains largely untapped for insights as part of the more than 80 percent of data in the world that's unstructured, making it difficult to process. Applying cognitive technology is believed to be a critical next step for mining and analyzing the complex data in video so companies can better understand and deliver the content consumers want.
"Companies are creating video with vast amounts of valuable data, but they don't have a way to easily identify that information or audience reaction to it," said Braxton Jarratt, general manager, IBM Cloud Video. "Today's new services are a major step forward in using IBM's cognitive and cloud capabilities to help companies unlock meaningful information about their videos and viewers so they can create and curate more personalized content that matters to specific audiences."
Accessible through the IBM Cloud, these new services analyze video data that can otherwise be difficult and time-consuming to manually process. They include:
-- Live Event Analysis: Combines Watson APIs with IBM Cloud Video streaming
video solutions to track near real-time audience reaction of live events
by analyzing social media feeds.
-- Video Scene Detection: Automatically segments videos into meaningful
scenes to make it more efficient to find and deliver targeted content.
-- Audience Insights: Integrates IBM Cloud Video solutions with the IBM
Media Insights Platform, a cognitive solution that uses Watson APIs to
help identify audience preferences, including what they are watching and
saying, through social media.
These services are among the latest examples of IBM applying Watson to its Cloud Video platform since the formation of its Cloud Video unit in January 2016. The IBM Cloud Video unit brings together innovations from IBM's R&D labs with the cloud video platform capabilities of Clearleap and Ustream.
IBM Applies Watson to IBM Cloud Video for Analysis of Audience Reaction to Live Events
With streaming video increasingly being used to broaden audiences for live events, IBM has combined the Watson Speech to Text and AlchemyLanguage APIs with its IBM Cloud Video technology for a new service that tracks consumer feedback while the event is happening. The new experimental technology is designed to process the natural language in the streaming video and simultaneously analyze social media feeds to provide word-by-word analysis of audience sentiment to a live event.
This capability, now in the demonstration phase with clients, could be used by companies to gauge and adjust to audience reaction before a speaker has even left the stage. At a product unveiling, for example, viewer enthusiasm might rise or fall when specific features are mentioned, providing valuable insights on aspects of the product that are important to consumers and should be stressed in the future.
IBM Pilots Cognitive Capabilities to Help Understand and Segment Video into Scenes
IBM also has piloted a new service that can provide a deeper understanding of the content in video. Today, technology exists in the market that can be used to segment videos based on simple visual cues, such as a change in camera shots. However, content providers continue to search for effective ways to distinguish more subtle shifts that require understanding conversations and context.
The new pilot project from IBM Research uses experimental cognitive capabilities, including technology designed to understand semantics and patterns in language and images, to identify higher-level concepts, such as when a show or movie changes topics. This can be used to automatically segment videos into meaningful chapters, instead of potentially arbitrary breaks in action. For example, the service could automatically create chapters of video clips based on different topics in a lecture, instructions for different cooking recipes or house-hunting scenes for individual neighborhoods. This level of detail would normally require a person to watch and manually categorize every piece of the video.
A leading content provider is already piloting this service as a potential way to improve categorization of videos, indexing of specific chapters and searches for relevant content. This is a first step to providing a basis for richer metadata services that can be used to help create highly-specific content pairings for viewers down to the segment, increasing engagement and time-spent.
Watson Cognitive Technology Combined with IBM Cloud Video Platform to Deliver More Relevant Content to Viewers
IBM also plans to integrate its cognitive technologies with the IBM Cloud Video platform to provide deeper insights on audience preferences and sentiment. IBM Media Insights Platform, an IBM Media and Entertainment solution, is being added to IBM Cloud Video's existing Catalog and Subscriber Manager and Logistics Manager products to provide customers detail into consumer viewing habits - such as other shows or networks watched, devices used for viewing and other interests for specific audiences.
The new service, planned for release later this year, is designed to use the new Media Insights Platform to analyze viewing behaviors and social media streams to identify complex patterns that can be used to help improve content pairings and find new viewers interested in existing content. The Media Insights Platform uses several Watson APIs, including Speech to Text, AlchemyLanguage, Tone Analyzer and Personality Insights.
Today's news builds on other recent projects by IBM to apply cognitive capabilities to video. Earlier this year, IBM Research used experimental Watson APIs to create a "cognitive movie trailer." The system learned from previous horror trailers what likely made them effective and identified relevant scenes in an unreleased movie that would make an effective trailer. IBM also worked this year with the US Open to convert commentary to text with greater accuracy by having Watson learn tennis terminology and player names before the tournament.
These new services can be used by both media and entertainment companies focused on content creation as well as organizations across all industries using video to connect with employees or customers.
