The CEVA-X1 IoT processor deploys a single-core DSP+CPU architecture, specifically designed to address the severe size, power and cost limitations demanded for deploying the latest LTE Cat-M1 (formerly eMTC) and Cat-NB1 (formerly NB-IoT) standards as well as future FeMTC and 5G cellular IoT use cases.
The connected cellular IoT market is expected to explode in the coming years, with ABI Research predicting the Cat-NB1 standard will account for more than one third of all cellular IoT shipments - a value which is greater than legacy M2M or the current Cat-1 standard. End markets and applications where these technologies will be deployed include the smart home, smart utilities, asset tracking, wearables, health, security and environmental, industrial and agricultural monitoring and control.

The latest core derived from the NEW CEVA-X architecture framework, the CEVA-X1 employs an extended Instruction Set Architecture (ISA) that, in addition to DSP processing, also allows it to efficiently handle CPU software workloads, such as protocol stack and system control. Comparing EEMBC® CoreMark® scores, a commonly used benchmark to measure the performance of CPU processing in embedded systems, the CEVA-X1 CoreMark/MHz score of 3.3 is on par with the most commonly used CPU for IoT stacks - the ARM® Cortex(TM)-M4 - which achieves a CoreMark/MHz score of 3.4. This effectively eliminates the requirement for a separate CPU core in the system when using the CEVA-X1, providing significant cost, power consumption and ease-of-programming benefits of a single-core approach.

Toshiba Launches Single-Chip, Low-Pin-Count ARM® Cortex®-M4F-Based Microcontrollers With Vector Engine
Second group of products in TXZ(TM) family can efficiently control multiple motors
SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 6, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC)*, a committed leader that collaborates with technology companies to create breakthrough designs, today launched a new group of microcontrollers (MCUs) that allow a single chip with a low pin count (32 to 64 pins) to control multiple motors in Field Oriented Control (FOC) methodology. The M4K MCUs are the second product group in Toshiba's TXZ(TM) family of high-speed, low power consumption microcontrollers that incorporate the ARM(®) Cortex(®)-M4F core with a co-processor for Toshiba's original vector engine that handles FOC algorithms in parallel for high efficient, low noise, and dynamic torque response motor applications. The initial M3H group was announced in April 2016 for a wide range of white goods and industrial equipment applications.
The M4K products are suitable for motor control in home appliances, such as air conditioners, and are based on the ARM Cortex-M4F, which incorporates a floating point processing unit. Previously, driving two motors, in FOC methodology, required a product(1) with a 100-pin package. Now, the TXZ family products with 64-pin packages can control two motors because the analog-to-digital converter (ADC) for detecting motor positions is accelerated and realizes a 0.5-microsecond conversion speed.
"As regulations tighten and product miniaturization continues, demand is rising for low-pin-count MCUs that can efficiently control multiple motors. With our M4K group, appliance makers can simplify and shrink the size of the circuit boards used in their products," said Deepak Mithani, senior director of the Mixed Signal Business Unit, System LSI Group at TAEC. "Toshiba will continue to enhance its portfolio for the growing motor control and sensing market."
The new MCUs support the RAMScope interface, which can monitor parameters in real time, without stopping motors, by loading parameters relevant to motor control to the random-access memory (RAM). Also incorporated are a self-diagnostic function that monitors the reference voltage of the A/D converter, and a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) arithmetic circuit that detects incorrect detection for every read operation of the memory. Both contribute to load mitigation of the software process required for functional safety(2).
Operating at up to 80Mhz, the devices are available in low-pin-count packages, ranging from 32 to 64 pins, and small Flash memory sizes (64KB to 128KB( 3)). Sample software uses built-in hardware resources, including the high-precision ADC with 0.5-microsecond conversion speed, Toshiba's Advanced Vector Engine Plus (A-VE+), and Advanced Programmable Motor Driver (A-PMD). Together, these features ensure the new MK4 products realize efficient motor control while improving power consumption and system control. MNI is a wireless ecosystem including hardware, software and clothing that sends vibrations to eight assigned channels across the body, replicating the array of musical instruments from a live performance or musical feed to the wearer's body.
Earlier this year, Not Impossible unveiled the first the MNI vests at the Bud Light Factory during SXSW. Since then, the team has made substantial updates to the technology, look, and wearability of the vest, to provide a more nuanced and comfortable experience for the wearer. The final product was worn last night by concert-goers in Nashville, translating the music of Lady Gaga's newest studio album for a deaf and hearing audience.

The Music: Not Impossible project was led by Not Impossible's Director of Technology Daniel Belquer; the vest was developed with Volcom, and the wrist-ankle bands developed with Stance. The vest provides live vibratory feedback to eight assigned channels, each replicating a particular instrument in the music -- percussion in the ankle bands, guitar and piano in the wrist bands, vocals in the rib cage, and bass on the lower back and spine. It was tested by over 200 hearing, deaf and hard of hearing musicians and music lovers.

New Compact RX100 V Model Boasts World's Fastest AF Speed[1], World's Most AF Points and World's Fastest Continuous Shooting[1] for a Compact Camera[1]
NEW YORK, Oct. 6, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony - a worldwide leader in digital imaging and the world's largest image sensor manufacturer - has today announced a new flagship model for their popular Cyber-shot RX100 series of compact cameras, the RX100 V (model DSC-RX100M5).
The exciting new camera brings a new level of AF performance and speed to today's compact camera market. It is equipped with a Fast Hybrid AF system with the world's fastest AF acquisition(1) at 0.05 seconds(2) and world's highest number of AF points on sensor(1) with 315 points covering approximately 65% of the frame. The camera can also shoot continuously at speeds of up to 24 fps(3) - the world's fastest for a compact camera(1) - at full 20.1 MP (approx. effective) resolution with AF/AE tracking for up to 150 continuous shots(4).
The RX100 V is equipped with a newly developed 1.0-type stacked Exmor RS(TM) CMOS sensor with a DRAM chip, a ZEISS(® )Vario-Sonnar T* 24-70 mm(5) F1.8 - 2.8 large aperture lens and an enhanced image processing system with a new front-end LSI chip that maximizes processing speed, expands the memory buffer and optimizes image quality, in particular at high ISO settings. The camera also features 4K video recording with full pixel readout and no pixel binning(6), super slow motion recording at up to 960 fps(7) with extended recording time and more.

Fast Focusing, Fast Shooting
A first for Sony's RX100 series of cameras, the new RX100 V model features a Fast Hybrid AF system that combines the respective advantages of focal-plane phase detection AF and contrast detection AF and ultimately enables the camera to lock focus in as little as 0.05 seconds(2). This high speed focusing is a perfect complement to the 315 dedicated AF points that cover 65% of the sensor, and ensures that shooters will be able to capture their intended subject with high speed and accuracy, even if it's moving rapidly in unpredictable directions.
Additionally, processing speed has been greatly enhanced through the addition of a front-end LSI that perfectly supports the camera's BIONZ X(®) image processing engine. These two components combined with the powerful AF system allow the camera to shoot continuously at speeds of up to 24 fps( 3) at full 20.1 MP (approx. effective) resolution for up to 150 shots(4) with AF/AE tracking. Viewfinder blackout between shots has also been minimized in this high-speed shooting mode, which greatly improves photographers' ability to follow fast action and capture the decisive moment. Silent shooting is also available in these high-speed modes as well(8).
Other advancements to AF performance on the new RX100 V include the addition of AF-A mode, which allows the camera to automatically switch between continuous and single-shot AF modes. Users can also manually select if they'd like the continuous AF and phase detection AF areas to be displayed live on screen while they are framing a shot.
The RX100 V also has a high speed Anti-Distortion Shutter (maximum speed of 1/32000 second) that minimizes the "rolling shutter" effect commonly experienced with fast moving subjects. This fast shutter speed also allows the camera to capture sharp, crystal clear images with a wide open aperture at brightness levels up to EV19(9). Shooting at wide aperture with the fast shutter speed allows photographers and videographers to capture beautiful content with sharply focused subjects and defocused backgrounds under some of the most difficult, bright lighting conditions.
New on the RX100 V, users can freely select the initial magnification ratio when shooting in a mode with Focus Magnifier, and can select between "focus point" and "center of display" for the location of Focus Magnifier.
Professional Movie Functionality
The pocket-friendly RX100 V is packed with a variety of video capabilities that will satisfy even the most demanding video enthusiasts.
With Fast Hybrid AF, the focal plane phase detection AF sensor ensures accurate focusing and tracking performance, even for the severe focusing requirements of 4K movie shooting. AF drive speed and AF tracking sensitivity can also be adjusted via the menu system, giving shooters plenty of flexibility based on their focusing preferences.
In 4K mode( 6), the new RX100 V utilizes full pixel readout without pixel binning to ensure that all the finer details of 4K video are captured with minimal moire and 'jaggies'. These high-quality results are achieved through use of the XAVC S codec, which records video at a high data rate of up to 100 Mbps during 4K recording and 50 Mbps during full HD shooting(10).
Additional professional caliber video features include Picture Profile, S-Log2/S-Gamut, 120p HD Full HD mode and more. Users also have the ability to manually select a frame from a recorded movie and save it as a still image file of approximately 8 MP during 4K shooting or 2 MP during HD shooting.
The RX100 V is able to record super-slow motion video(7) at up to 40x slower than the standard rate, and can do this for about twice as long as the RX100 IV model. This extended time allowing users to capture a series of high-speed, fleeting moments of action with incredible detail, resolution and clarity.
Prior to shooting, users will have the ability to choose among 960fps, 480fps and 240 fps frame rates and among 60p, 30p and 24p playback formats to optimize the recording to fit the speed of the moving subject, with the option to use the movie record button as a 'start trigger' to begin recording once button is pressed or 'end trigger' to record footage up until the button is pressed.
Pocket-Friendly Design, Premium Performance

As the latest addition to Sony's lineup of award winning mirrorless cameras, the new 6500 shares the same unrivaled 4D FOCUS(TM) system as the 6300 camera, which can lock focus on a subject in as little as 0.05 seconds, the world's fastest(1) AF acquisition time. Also shared with the 6300, the new 6500 features 425 phase detection AF points that are densely positioned over nearly the entire image area - the world's highest(2) number of AF points on any interchangeable lens camera. The new model can shoot images at up to 11 frames per second with continuous autofocus and exposure tracking and up to 8 frames per second in a live-view shooting mode that makes it easy to track fast moving subjects, as it combines all of the benefits of an electronic viewfinder with the immediacy of an optical viewfinder.
The camera can shoot at these high speeds for up to 307 frames(3) thanks to its expanded buffer, which, along with the fast response speeds described above, are all achieved with the support of a new front-end LSI chip that has been added to the camera. Unmatched AF Capability
Sony's new 6500 camera utilizes the same 4D FOCUS system as the 6300 - a Fast Hybrid AF system that combines high-speed phase detection AF with extremely accurate contrast AF and allows it to capture and lock on to moving subjects in as little as 0.05 seconds(1). It also features 425 phase detection AF points and High-density Tracking AF Technology, which significantly improves subject detection and tracking performance.
New for the 6500, thanks to faster internal processing capabilities enabled by the front-end LSI, the maximum buffer for high-speed continuous shooting is an impressive 307 frames(3), greatly increasing the chances to catch that decisive moment.
The camera's 425 phase detection AF points, focusing tracking and accuracy are also available when using non-native A-mount lenses(5) with Sony's LA-EA3 mount adapter. Additionally, it includes silent shooting, Eye AF in AF-C mode, AF in focus magnifier modes, Expand Flexible Spot AF and more.
One of the most exciting developments in the new 6500 is the implementation of 5-axis image stabilization for the first time in a Sony APS-C sensor camera. Additionally, through a total revision of the internal design of the camera, this newly developed stabilization system fits entirely within a body that is nearly the same size as the 6300 model(6). This innovative 5-axis system provides a shutter speed advantage of 5 steps(4), ensuring the full resolving power of the sensor can be realized, even in challenging lighting.
The shake compensation provided by the system works with a variety of lenses, including E-mount lenses without OSS (Optical SteadyShot) stabilization and A-mount lenses(7) when used with a compatible mount adapter. When an E-mount lens with OSS is mounted, pitch and yaw are compensated in the lens and horizontal, vertical and roll axes are compensated in the camera body, resulting in optimal 5-axis stabilization( 7).
Also, with a simple half press of the shutter button, the effect of the image stabilization can be monitored in the viewfinder or on the LCD screen, allowing framing and focus to be accurately checked and continually monitored. This is available even when a lens is attached that does not have built-in shake compensation.
New Touch Screen Focusing
The new 6500 comes equipped with touch screen functionality, allowing users to lock focus on a subject simply by touching it on the screen. This is a powerful compliment to its advanced AF system and video shooting capabilities.
Additionally, in a first for Sony cameras, the 6500 features touchpad functionality. When utilizing the viewfinder for framing and shooting, the LCD screen can be used as a touch pad. Simply drag a finger across the screen to shift the focus point from one area to another.
Powerful 24.2 MP(8) Exmor CMOS Sensor, BIONZ X((R)) Processor and New Front-End LSI
The new 6500 features an APS-C sized 24.2 MP(8) Exmor CMOS sensor that works together with a BIONZ X image processor and the newly developed front-end LSI to maximize processing power and achieve an impressive sensitivity range of ISO 100-51200(9).
The image sensor employs a thin wiring layer and large photodiode substrate that maximizes light collection efficiency, plus copper wiring in its structure for outstanding read-out speed. The BIONZ X image processor and newly developed front-end LSI ensure superior image and video quality with low noise even when using higher ISO settings, in particular those at high sensitivity values where other cameras typically struggle. The LSI is also responsible for the expanded buffer depth for continuous shooting.

The new 6500 becomes the latest Sony interchangeable lens camera to offer internal 4K movie recording, as it can shoot 4K (3840x2160p) video in the popular Super 35mm format on the full width of the image sensor. In this mode, frame rates from 1 fps to 120 fps can be selected in 8 steps for up to 60x quick motion and 5x slow motion recording(12). Footage shot in this mode can be previewed after shooting without the need for PC-based post processing.
The camera also offers S-Log gamma recording(13) for wide dynamic range shooting - approximately 14-stop latitude in S-Log3 gamma setting - and supports S-Gamut for a wider color space. Both options allow for greater creativity for processing video post-production.
Shooters also now have the ability to select, extract and save still images from movie footage directly on the camera. Approximately 8 MP images and 2 MP images can be pulled from 4K modes and Full HD modes, respectively.
Enhanced Operability and Reliability
The new 6500 has a refined design, maintaining the mobility of the 6000 series while adapting much of the usability of Sony's acclaimed 7 II series. The new model features the same high contrast, high-resolution 2.4 million dot XGA OLED Tru-Finder as the 6300 that offers exceptional corner-to-corner visibility.
New hardware features on the 6500 include a magnesium alloy body and a high-durability shutter with a tested life span of approximately 200,000 release cycles(14). It also has several design features that are borrowed from the 7 II series of full-frame cameras, which include a robust lens mount, a recessed grip to improve handling, a larger release button and ten total custom buttons including 'C1', 'C2' and 'C3'. It also has an improved operation feel for its mode and control dials and rear face buttons, as well as a softer eyepiece cup for more comfortable usage.
On the software front, there is a new overall user interface, which allows for a much smoother process for searching and adjusting menu settings, as well two new metering modes - Highlight, where exposure metering is focused on the brightest area of the frame, and Entire Screen Avg, which maintains an average metering for the entire image.
The camera is Wi-Fi((R)), QR and NFC compatible and fully compatible with Sony's PlayMemories Mobile(TM) applications(15) available for Android((TM)) and iOS platforms, as well as Sony's growing range of PlayMemories Camera Apps(TM). The 6500 also offers location data acquisition via a Bluetooth(16) connection to a compatible mobile device and an updated menu structure to deliver a smoother navigational experience.
Pricing and Availability
The Sony 6500 interchangeable lens camera will ship this November for about $1,400 US and $1,750 CA. It will be sold at a variety of Sony authorized dealers throughout North America.

EU's Copernicus Programme and EUMETSAT to Highlight What Satellites Can Tell Us About Oceans in New Online Course

Tracking the paths of storms and the spread of pollution, helping improve maritime
safety and weather forecasting, supporting fisheries and monitoring the effects of climate
change are just some of the myriad uses of data from ocean-monitoring satellites.
EUMETSAT, the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites,
is offering anyone with an interest in learning more about the monitoring of oceans from
space a free, five-week massive open online course (MOOC).
The course, starting October 24, is funded by the EU through its flagship Earth
observation environmental programme Copernicus, and will run during a timeframe new data
and products from the Copernicus Sentinel-3A ocean-monitoring satellite, which was
launched in February, progressively become available.
EUMETSAT Training Manager Dr Mark Higgins said the course would show participants how
to access the wealth of ocean-monitoring data that is being collected by satellites every
day.
"The course brings together experts from throughout Europe and beyond and shows not
only the sheer amount of data available but also how this data is used to monitor the
health of the oceans," Mark said.
"This course will explain how it is that we know what we know about the oceans and the
very significant role satellites play in this."
Topics to be covered in the MOOC include why satellite data are used; oceans and
climate; weather and hazards such as tropical storms, storm surges and icebergs; and
monitoring water quality.
The course is provided through the online learning platform FutureLearn and it has
been developed for EUMETSAT by Imperative Space in partnership with Plymouth Marine
Laboratory, the National Oceanography Centre (Southampton), CLS France and NASA JPL.
Sentinel-3A has been described as, "the most beautiful satellite ever built for
oceanography" and will vastly increase the amount of data available about our oceans.
EUMETSAT is responsible for the day to day operations of Sentinel-3 and for processing
and disseminating its marine data stream.
One of the main users of the data is the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring
Service (CMEMS), where experts interpret and make available data relating to four key
application areas: marine resources, maritime safety, coastal and marine environment and
climate monitoring.
CMEMS collaborated in the making of the "Monitoring the Oceans from Space" MOOC.

The British eSports Association Pledges Support to Grassroots eSports, Outlining Five Key Areas of Focus

The British eSports Association, the new not-for-profit organisation, has revealed its
long-term plans.
Since being established in June 2016, the national governing body has been looking
into areas of potential development and engaging with the eSports community, both on a
local and global level, as well as communicating with the UK Government's Department of
Culture, Media and Sport.
After previously announcing it will work to help and represent players, develop a
grassroots eSports scene and provide an infrastructure to nurture future talent, its
consultation period has now come to a close and the association has outlined its five key
areas of focus.
These are as follows:
1. To fund and support grassroots eSportsÂ
2. To establish best practice Â
3. To deliver courses and qualificationsÂ
4. To increase awareness of eSportsÂ
5. To provide expertise and adviceÂ
While the five points indicated above are our core areas of focus, we acknowledge
there are other topics which need to be addressed. For example, these include visas for
pro gamers, contract parity for pros, and tackling online harassment.
Meetings have also taken place between the British eSports Association and Activision,
Blizzard and Microsoft.
The British eSports Association is aiming to launch its full website by December 6th,
acting as a go-to portal for those within UK eSports and others who are looking for more
information on it.

having a sub-group. The advisory board will rotate, with each member sitting on the board
for a minimum of 12 months. An observer from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport
will also be present.
The Advisory Board for 2017 will be announced in December.

The XR22404 and XR22417 are designed for applications where power consumption and board space are a concern such as docking stations, point-of-sale terminals, USB port expansion, test instrumentation, factory automation and other industrial applications.
The XR22404 is a cost-effective USB 2.0 4-port hub controller that can be configured for downstream device charging and supports USB Battery Charging Specification 1.1 and 1.2. The XR22404 operates from either 3.3V or 5V supplies, allowing bus- or self-powered operation without an external LDO. Available in a tiny 4mm x 4mm, 24-pin QFN package, the XR22404 is the smallest USB 2.0 4-port hub controller on the market. It is also available in a 28-pin SSOP for less space-constrained applications.
The XR22417 is a USB 2.0 7-port hub controller that utilizes Multiple Transaction Translators (MTT) for the highest possible bandwidth. Like the 4-port device in the family, the XR22417 benefits from design optimization that minimizes power, size and cost to meet the challenging constraints facing connectivity and interface designers. The XR22417 is available in a 64-pin LQFP package as well as a smaller 48-pin LQFP.
The XR22404 and XR22417 are compatible with standard software drivers and include LED indicators to simplify implementation. Both controllers attach to upstream ports at hi-speed (480Mbps) or full-speed (12Mbps). The downstream PHYs support hi-speed, full-speed and low-speed (1.5Mbps) on each port.

The training program, created in collaboration with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), India, Indian Cellular Association (ICA) and the Ministry of Economic Affairs(MOEA), Taiwan, will propel the 'Make in India' initiative. MediaTek will share its smartphone design expertise, and leverage its well-established global ecosystem to support the program.
The two-and-a-half-month program, scheduled to start later this year, provides hands-on training to managers and senior engineers from India on efficient planning and execution of handset design projects. The guidance and education offered through the training program will give engineers expertise to advance handset design in India.

MORGAN HILL, Calif., Oct. 5, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Anritsu Company expands its industry leading CPRI test portfolio with the introduction of a BBU Emulation capability for its BTS Master(TM) MT8220T that saves significant time and cost when verifying LTE cell site operation. Addressing a market need for a comprehensive and accurate field test solution, the BTS Master MT8220T with BBU Emulation provides wireless technicians, engineers and contractors with all the necessary tools to validate that a RRH is installed properly and functional, before the Base Band Unit (BBU) is commissioned. This unique combination of measurement tools expedites 4G network rollouts and reduces OpEx (Operational Expense) costs associated with new sites.
With the BBU Emulation option, the BTS Master MT8220T is a complete solution for building out, testing and troubleshooting new and installed cell sites. It can be used by wireless professionals to install and verify optical fiber, SFP, RRH, and power before the BBU is officially commissioned and the site goes live.
The BTS Master MT8220T with the BBU Emulation option installed can test the SFP connections to validate wavelength and line rate. BBU Emulation also allows the SFPs in the analyzer and RRH to communicate to verify that the optical fiber and SFP in the RRH are operational and have a good CPRI link. Other necessary analysis, such as transmit tests, VSWR and Return Loss measurements, Pass/Fail limit values, spectrum measurements and Spectrogram measurement can be conducted with the solution.
BBU Emulation allows engineers and technicians to troubleshoot problems independent from the core network. The RRH can be separated from the other network elements to determine if it is at fault or problems are originating from a different source. By providing the ability to verify that all new cell sites are installed correctly and can be turned on easily when the BBU is commissioned, the BBU Emulation capability allows crews to verify and fix any issues while they still have the construction equipment on site, saving time and money.
The new BBU Emulation option requires the BTS Master MT8220T to be equipped with the CPRI LTE RF Measurements option, which allows field engineers and technicians to conduct accurate RF measurements on RRHs while remaining at ground level. The BTS Master has been specifically developed for 4G networks as well as installed 2G, 3G and WiMAX networks. It provides 20 MHz bandwidth modulation quality for LTE eNodeB testing and has a high-contrast, touch screen display and backlit key panel for ease of use in both bright sunlight and dim conditions.
