Key disruptors from the digital world meet leading figures from politics, business,
culture and art: For the twelfth time, Hubert Burda Media has brought together around
1,500 international guests and 150 speakers in Munich's HVB Forum for the DLD (Digital,
Life, Design) innovation conference on 17 - 19 January - immediately before the World
Economic Forum in Davos.
In her opening speech, DLD founder and managing director Steffi Czerny declared that,
in its twelfth year, DLD has developed into an ecosystem for digital change. Many speakers
returned, and were joined by DLD newcomers shaping the future with their ideas. Dominik
Wichmann, DLD managing director and editor-in-chief, emphasised DLD's role in today's
world: "Digital, Life, Design stands for much more than just this conference. It stands
for the way we live today." Â
Disruptors at DLD16: Netflix, YouTube, WhatsApp and Airbnb Â
On the DLD stage, WhatsApp founder Jan Koum exclusively announced the company's aim to
continue offering its service free of charge worldwide. Koum appeared at DLD two years ago,
shortly before WhatsApp concluded a deal with Facebook worth billions. Koum explained
that this sale allowed WhatsApp to grow, and user numbers have doubled. Nevertheless, they
still work independently, "like a start-up", and are now focusing on innovation and new
products.
With Netflix and YouTube in attendance, the "Future of Television" had several
distinguished representatives. Netflix founder Reed Hastings declared that the days of
linear television viewing are numbered. "Today, people want to watch on any screen,
personalised. And they want an application that is constantly developing and improving."
The streaming provider has discovered that its new shows really do work on an
international level. Now their goal is further global expansion - in countries like China
too, "with a little patience". Robert Kyncl, Chief Business Officer at YouTube, had some
figures to hand: 400 hours of video material are uploaded to the platform every minute. 20
million YouTube channels are already monetising their moving-image content via contracts
with the video platform. Â
Airbnb founder Nathan Blecharczyk explained the prospects of the service that competes
with hostels. Europe is an important market that generates more than half its turnover,
and they have particular hopes for the German market.
Europe is changing Â
DLD16 launched with a day focused on European topics. EU Commissioner for Competition
Margrethe Vestager argued for standardised rules for all companies in Europe. When it
comes to user privacy, she also advocated the "right to be forgotten". Vestager commented:
"It is important that people have the opportunity to cover their tracks in the digital
world as well, or to approve them, depending on what they deem important." Investor Oliver
Samwer, Jens Spahn (CDU), Jeremy Stoppelman (Yelp CEO) and Dominik Stein (EQT Partners)
then discussed Europe as a start-up location. Samwer said: "We must not compare ourselves
with America, which has a great deal more money at its disposal." Jens Spahn added: "The
big question is, can European companies really keep up? My response would be: not yet."
The topic of refugees was also discussed in a European context. Having accompanied
Syrian refugees on their route through Europe, Jody Williams, recipient of the Nobel Peace
Prize, was able to report first hand. She appealed that "we must use technology to connect
people".
Infosphere and iconic turnÂ
Art, visual communication and philosophical aspects of digitalising our world also
played an important role at DLD16. Marne Levine, Chief Operating Officer at Instagram,
spoke about the "iconic turn". According to Levine, images are becoming our new words,
even our new language. After all, "images trigger the same emotions across cultures".
Mobile usage will fuel this even further and drive visual communication.
Luciano Floridi, Professor of Philosophy at the University of Oxford, presented his
theory of a "fourth revolution" and joined moderator Jeff Jarvis (CUNY), Peter Weibel (ZKM)
and Peter Sloterdijk on the DLD stage to discuss our life in the "infosphere". Floridi
stated that the digital does not describe the world, but is writing new chapters in its
history. We are now dependent on digital devices: "They can do many things better than we
can. And by allowing them to do the job, we ourselves are changing."
Digital Stars announced
For the fourth time, DLD saw the Focus "Digital Star Award" presented to digital
innovations by German companies, research institutions and start-ups. The main prize for
the "Innovation of the Year" went to the Munich-based company NavVis. The "Digital
Perspective" award for up-and-coming talent was presented to Antelope for the first sports
clothing with an integrated EMS system. The "Editor's Choice" category went to ArtiMinds,
a spin-off of the Karlsruher Institute of Technology (KIT).

In a January 10th Flagship Smartphones Battery Life Challenge in China, the Meizu PRO5
with PowerXtend was the last device running after all other screens went dark. The PRO5 is
the first device to integrate PowerXtend version 3.5, the latest version of the product
that introduces the groundbreaking, patented, ICE power saving engine.
The test was conducted live in front of one hundred referees and tens of thousands
of online viewers. All test devices were operated under the same conditions, playing the
classic mobile phone game "Need for Speed". To ensure test consistency, brand new devices
were set to flight mode, screen brightness of 150nits, sound muted and battery charged
100%. The Nexus 6P with a 3,450 mAh battery was the first to shut down after 3 hours 29
minutes of intensive gaming. The Huawei Mate8, equipped with a 4,000 mAh battery gave up
after 6 hours 11 minutes and at 6 hours 48 minutes the iPhone 6s Plus left the game after
its 2750 mAh battery ran dead. The Meizu PRO5, with Lucid's PowerXtend integrated,
outlasted all other devices with a whopping 7 hours 4 minutes battery life. This result is
even more impressive, considering that the device packs a 3,050 mAh battery, the lowest
capacity amongst all Android devices tested.
"Higher battery capacity does not always imply longer operating time, and also comes
with a toll of increased weight, space and cost. Lucid's PowerXtend power saving software
extends device battery life by optimizing device processing for various apps and content,
without compromise to functionality" said Adina Shorr, Lucid CEO, after the contest. "The
results speak for themselves, attesting that Lucid's approach enables devices with any
battery capacity to provide winning performance under the challenging requirements of
mobile gamers."
Lucid's PowerXtend has become the de-facto standard for Android mobile power saving
software and the Meizu PRO5 is the first smartphone model to support the newest PowerXtend
version 3.5. The new version introduces the ICE, a groundbreaking power saving engine
based on patented technology. ICE sets a new standard for the user experience, enabling
longer playing time and lower device heat.
Lucidlogix Technologies (http://www.lucidlogix.com) provides software for power
saving solutions, satisfying the growing demand for performance and mobility. Benefiting
from Lucid's core graphics technologies, Lucid's proprietary algorithms and software
solutions dramatically improves mobile performance for Android devices. Lucidlogix is

Opgal Integrates Fire Detection into Firefighting Logistics System
KARMIEL, Israel, January 19, 2016 /PRNewswire/ --
Sii AT(TM) Fire Detection Camera Provides Real Time Thermal Video to Locus TransFire
(TM) System Â
Opgal [http://www.opgal.com ] has announced the integration of its Vumii Sii AT Fire
Detection Camera into the Locus TransFire System in Norway. The integration of the thermal
cameras enables a live thermal video feed, sending real time alerts with coordinates
directly to the TransFire system to enable prevention and fast response to fires.
"With the Sii AT's Fire Risk Detection capabilities, a virtually unlimited amount of
fire and heat sources can be detected, while avoiding false alarms from hot spots at the
scene," said Amit Mattatia, President & CEO of Opgal. "Fire, or even an increase in heat
occurring before fire actually starts, can be detected as far as 6 kilometers away. Visual
alarms are displayed on the operator's screen, while simultaneously sending alert signals
for both fire and risk of fire over a wide area network, enabling emergency services to
respond in a timely fashion."
Sii AT is part of Opgal's broad line of Vumii thermal cameras and camera systems,
allowing fast detection and reaction to a large amount of security threats and safety
issues.
The TransFire system, developed by Locus Public Safety AS, a key supplier of logistics
solutions to emergency services, is used by a large percentage of emergency call centers
in Norway. Using detailed maps, the system helps with decision making and improves
resource management, providing full integration of all fire-related systems to provide a
complete firefighting logistics system. The Vumii Sii AT fire detection camera has been
fully integrated into Locus' TransFire system. Â Once the camera triggers an alarm, the
information is fed into the fire command center and a fire truck is dispatched. The data
is automatically plotted onto a map and displayed real time on a screen in the fire truck,
ensuring that the team has the exact location and all necessary information before arrival
at the scene.
The integration process was facilitated by Nortelco Electronics AS. The additional
fire detection capabilities provided by Opgal are slated for use in a number of towns and
facilities at risk of fire throughout Norway and further afield.

Both products feature what Samsung calls "real-time HDR," controllable by the user via a dedicated function key, which are enabled by Assertive Display. New technologies from Fujitsu are being showcased at the Fujitsu booth (#3805) at the National Retail Federation (NRF) BIG Show on January 17-20, 2016, at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City.
"In today's retail environment, highly engaged shoppers are looking to get what they need in as short a time as possible, and retail technology is undergoing dramatic changes as a result," said Marc Janssens, executive vice president of Retail at Fujitsu America, Inc. "Fujitsu is meeting these new demands by introducing new solutions that help deliver omni-channel functionality and lower POS times, as well as innovations that empower retail staff to streamline sales activities through wearable technology, automated systems and easily navigable point-of-sale (POS) products, all of which deliver a superior in-store customer experience."
Fujitsu is showcasing its extended portfolio of retail solutions at the Fujitsu booth at NRF including:
-- FUJITSU Impulse(TM): The first self-service unit specifically designed
for a convenience store-type environment. With a footprint that is one
quarter of the size of the FUJITSU U-Scan® Genesis® II unit or a
traditional Self-Checkout unit (four Impulse units = one Self-Checkout
unit), it fits easily into smaller stores, leaving more room for
merchandise and working as an automated assistant to help manage lines
and purchase flow.
-- FUJITSU Fresco(TM): A new POS selling application that allows grocers to
increase profitability by boosting productivity in stores, operations
and IT groups. Fujitsu Fresco software offers a customizable POS and
cash management solution that builds upon traditional POS products to
deliver a seamlessly-integrated experience geared specifically at the
grocery industry, but also adapting well to food service, pharmacy,
cosmetics, clothing and other product areas. With omni-channel becoming
a key to success for retailers, Fujitsu Fresco software offers
functionality that allows in-store customers to buy items that aren't
physically available in the store.
-- FUJITSU U-Scan 6.0: This latest release of the new U-Scan 6.0 software
makes self-checkout faster and easier to use for the customer, more
practical for the attendant managing self-checkout, and includes
upgrades to security, as well as wearable tech compatibility. A suite of
features enhances the customer experience from colorful new screens to
configuration options that can reduce weight security issues by up to
40%. Retailers now have more direct control over the multimedia
experience, allowing them to include advertisements or to match their
seasonal in-store displays, by customizing the self-checkout experience
by season.
-- Retail Wearables: Fujitsu's patent pending wearable solutions in retail
represent a low cost and efficient way to manage customers and checkout
lanes on the go. Integrated with U-Scan, Fresco and Impulse products,
these wearable devices keep your staff in touch with management and with
customers who need help. Retail Wearables also keep associates' hands
free to prepare food, assist customers or work on other tasks, all while
managing checkout lanes. This new generation of smaller wearable
devices, adapted by Fujitsu for retail use, makes it easy to keep staff
simultaneously connected with management and customers. With Microsoft,
Fujitsu will be demonstrating this new technology at NRF on the
Microsoft Band 2 smart band, which offers a high-level of functionality
at a highly competitive price point. "Fujitsu and Microsoft have been
working together for nearly 20 years, and this latest collaboration
reaffirms why we've worked so well together during that time. The latest
innovation is the application of our Microsoft Band platform to the
retail environment, demonstrating new ways to drive value from the new
Microsoft Band, and also access an undiscovered market for wearable
technology," said Marty Ramos, head of Strategy and Innovation,
Worldwide Retail, Consumer Products and Services at Microsoft.
As a leading provider in retail platforms and products, Fujitsu has worked with retailers across the globe for three decades in more than 100,000 global terminals to provide seamless integration of software, hardware and multi-vendor support, which together enable an enhanced customer experience in an increasingly complex technology environment. The company's strong integration capabilities allow retailers to leverage new innovations and solutions that address technology-savvy consumers who increasingly expect an omni-channel retail experience.
Fujitsu America will be providing live-demonstrations of the new products and solutions at booth #3805 at Retail's Big Show.

Magneti Marelli: Activities at the Las Vegas CES 2016 and at the Detroit Auto Show (NAIAS) 2016
MILAN, January 18, 2016 /PRNewswire/ --
Magneti Marelli has entered 2016 by displaying its advanced technologies and products
at two important American events for the automotive sector: the CES (Consumer Electronics
Show) in Las Vegas and the NAIAS (North American International Auto Show) in Detroit.
At the CES, two of the main themes for the automotive sector were connectivity and
displays. Magneti Marelli reflected these themes at the off-site demo event staged in Las
Vegas and also exhibited advanced technologies for lighting, infotainment, telematics and
powertrain.
Regarding the 2016 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), scheduled from 11th
to 24th January, many of the Magneti Marelli technological solutions are adopted on the
new Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, displayed at the show in Detroit.
Magneti Marelli is contributing to Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio technologies and
components, first and foremost within the area of electronic systems: at the forefront is
the CDC (Chassis Domain Control) electronic control unit, the "brain" of the car, and the
new infotainment system equipped with an 8.8 "black panel" TFT (Thin Film Transistor)
display which integrates innovative "optical bonding" technologies designed for perfect
display readability.
With regard to lighting systems, Magneti Marelli has collaborated with Alfa Romeo to
produce the headlamps and rear lamps of the Giulia, distinctive and characteristic design
elements of the car. The Giulia Quadrifoglio headlamps are made with Xenon technology
equipped with AFS (Adaptive Frontlight System) technology and with a 35W lighting module,
a solution that increases the lighting capability by 200% compared to standard halogen
headlamps, thus ensuring greater safety when driving. The LED technology is adopted for
position lights, DRL (Daytime Running Light), cornering lights and for the indicators. The
LED rear tail lights, a synthesis of stylistic and technological excellence, identify the
rear of the car uniquely and distinctively, further enhancing the straight and dynamic
line of the car.
Magneti Marelli also produced the components of the front and rear suspensions,
the exhaust system, the pedal board and the plastic parts and, in the electronic systems
area, the body computer.
The Alfa Romeo 4C Spider showed in Detroit is equipped with many Magneti Marelli
technologies: Xenon headlamps and LED rear tail lights, shock absorbers and, in relation
to Powertrain, ECU (Electronic Control Unit) and electro-hydraulic actuators of the
dual-clutch gearbox.Â
The new Chrysler Pacifica is equipped with Magneti Marelli Automotive Lighting
technologies and, in particular, headlamps (halogen and Xenon) and rear lamps (bulb and
LED).
The second generation Chevrolet Volt hybrid electric vehicle is equipped with Magneti
Marelli Automotive Lighting eLight LED headlamps as well as rear lamps. Â In addition, both
halogen and Xenon headlamps as well as LED tail lamps are on the new Chevrolet Camaro.
Magneti Marelli lighting technologies are present on the new Audi A4, that is debuting
in Detroit with the All-Road version, with LED rear lamps for the Avant version, Bi-Xenon
25 watt headlamps, LED headlamps and Matrix LED headlamps, fitted with individual and
independent LEDs that harmonise in real-time light emission intensity depending on the
speed and type of route.
Magneti Marelli Automotive Lighting LED rear lights are supplied for the new
Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
With regard to the Electronic Systems, the Porsche 911 Turbo adopts the instrument
cluster with the traditional five circular element design that collects all the
information useful for the driver with TFT reconfigurable display.
At the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada, for the
second year Magneti Marelli had an exclusive off-site demo event staged in Las Vegas to
display some selected hi-end technologies. Magneti Marelli showed its solutions for
lighting, infotainment, telematics and display, powertrain.
Magneti Marelli placed the focus on lighting with the full-LED Matrix Beam module (LED
full beam with adaptive system for the guidance of the light beam through the LEDs'
selective activation) and on the OLED (organic led) technology rear lamps, that contains
red and amber OLEDs which give a homogeneous appearance regardless of perspective. Even
when the tail light is off, the OLED elements are extremely elegant and appear to be a
silvery mirror. Magneti Marelli also showed signalling lamps with pedestrian notification
of turning. Automotive Lighting also made available a special app for iPad to give the
opportunity to set up the colours and the luminous intensity of the headlamps and rear
lamps.
Concerning infotainment, telematics and display, Magneti Marelli presented a selection
of the latest generation of instrument panels with AMOLED technology, which are
characterised by reduction of power consumption, greater display speed and very sharp
colours with a more defined contrast. A devoted exhibition space has been dedicated to

Return to Ravenloft in a New Gothic Horror Adventure, Curse of Strahd
A Classic Dungeons & Dragons Villain Rises From the Grave
RENTON, Wash., Jan. 18, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Wizards of the Coast announced Curse of Strahd, a new Dungeons & Dragons adventure set in Castle Ravenloft and the surrounding land of Barovia. Written in collaboration with Tracy and Laura Hickman, the authors of the original Ravenloft adventure published in 1983, Curse of Strahd pits players against the vampire Strahd von Zarovich. Curse of Strahd will be available to everyone on March 15, 2016.
"Revisiting the land of Barovia with the creators of the original Ravenloft adventure has been a highlight of my professional career," said Chris Perkins, principal story designer at Wizards of the Coast. "Tracy and Laura Hickman created a timeless villain whose faults reflect the darkest traits of humanity. I can't begin to describe what it's like to walk through the halls of Castle Ravenloft with its creators as your guides."
Heroes from the Forgotten Realms and other D&D worlds can easily be drawn into Strahd's cursed land. Once there, they must contend with the horrors of Barovia. Its people are melancholy, misshapen and grotesque, living in fear of the wolves and other creatures that serve Strahd's evil will. The only hope for the trapped adventurers is to heed the warnings of a mysterious fortune-teller named Madam Eva. Drawing random cards from her tarokka deck, she directs adventurers to search Strahd's domain for artifacts and allies to help the master of Castle Ravenloft. That is, before he orchestrates your demise for his amusement and feasts on your terror.
While waiting for the adventure, experience the power of Madam Eva for yourself. D&D fans can have their own distinct fortunes read each day by retweeting the official @Wizards_DnD Twitter account using the hashtag #DNDFortune. Madam Eva's fortunes are based on which random card she draws from her tarokka deck and displays for each reading. Check back each day with Madam Eva to see what your #DNDFortune will foretell.
Players will also love to get their hands on a physical tarokka deck of cards produced by Gale Force 9 and available with the release of the adventure. The tarokka deck is a powerful tool for both Madam Eva and for Dungeon Masters running Curse of Strahd. By using the tarokka deck to randomize locations within the adventure, Dungeon Masters can customize each party's exploration of Barovia, allowing Curse of Strahd to be replayed for years to come.
Strahd is waiting for you ... What are you afraid of?

iTouchFaucets showcase their SmartFaucet to help save the world up to 90% water, gas, electric & fuel in the recent CES and upcoming IBS & KBIS Show in Las Vegas
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Jan. 18, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Joanna Boey, owner and inventor of iTouchFaucets, is proud to introduce what she thinks is the smartest faucet in the world.
iTouchFaucets partnered with NGHTV to showcase their SmartFaucet that uses smartphone touch technology which can help save the world up to 90% water, gas, electric and even fuel cost for airlines, cruise lines and RVs.
iTouchFaucets is a simple electronic touchpad that could replace your existing faucet handles and can be attached to almost any faucet system for your bathroom, kitchen, shower and bathtub.
It offers 4 preset temperatures & various timers that can be activated with a touch of a finger, without having to use both hands to adjust the water temperature, making it convenient and sanitary, saving time and effort.
"A lot of water is wasted adjusting that water temperature," says Miss Boey, who was born and raised in Singapore where water is scarce and water conservation is her way of life.
Each temperature defaults at 3 seconds, for users to fill up a cup, so water is cut off during routine chores such as brushing your teeth.
When done, users simply touch it again for another 3 seconds to rinse their toothbrush, using only 6 seconds of water versus 60 seconds, saving 90% water, gas and electric.
Users can avoid that cold splash of water by installing iTouchFaucets outside the shower.
When used in the bathtub, iTouchFaucets prevents overflow and mold issues.
This hi-tech solution to our current drought situation and ever increasing demand for clean water of the world due to increasing infrastructure, offers mutual benefits both to owners and end users as well as the environmentalists.
Restaurants can save even more, since by law each employee must scrub their hands for 30 seconds--with US flow rate at 2 gallons per minute, 30 seconds means one gallon of water wasted.
Five employees means 5 gallons, 12 hours a day means 60 gallons, times 365 days means 20,000 gallons. Since most restaurants have 5 kitchen sinks, this means iTouchFaucets can help save 100,000 gallons per restaurant per year.
With her double major in Economics and Mathematics from the University of Singapore, Miss Boey was able to show how $20 savings in water, gas, and electric bills per month per room can raise the hotel value by $4,000,000 for every 1000 rooms, assuming using a 6% cap ratio. This means hotel investors can use Itouchfaucets to make a quick profit.

Low Speed Ventilation Delivers Highly Efficient Server Cooling
LUND, Sweden, January 18, 2016 /PRNewswire/ --
Low Speed Ventilation (LSV) - a new, highly efficient cooling concept for server
rooms - is the latest addition to Alfa Laval's range of cooling solutions for data
centers. Â
Millions of servers in data centers worldwide generate huge amounts of heat while
handling and processing data. Conventional server cooling technology involves high air
speeds of 8-9 metres per second. Moving air at this speed requires a lot of energy and can
trigger the Venturi-effect, which leads to air pressure variations and the "hot spots"
that can cause servers to overheat.
To view the Multimedia News Release, please
click:Â http://www.multivu.com/players/uk/7736352-low-speed-ventilation-efficient-cooling
Alfa Laval has introduced a unique and patented cooling concept, Low Speed Ventilation,
which delivers air at a considerably lower speed: 1.5 to 1.8 meters per second. Reducing
air speed and delivering an optimum airflow eliminates the Venturi effect, minimizes
pressure differences and therefore prevents problems such as 'hot spots'. As LSV is a
normal pressure technology, data center operators only need to control air availability,
not air pressure, making it far easier to achieve optimum conditions in the server room.
As significant amounts of air are required for Low Speed Ventilation, LSV coolers are
larger than conventional coolers. Alfa Laval Arctigo LSV air coolers are specially
designed with a large cross-sectional area. Located outside the server room, these coolers
ensure the servers are supplied with sufficient temperature-controlled air at all times,
while consuming far less power than conventional server cooling solutions.
"Low Speed Ventilation is a unique technology that challenges current solutions for
cooling server halls," says Mats Carselid, Marketing Manager Data Center Cooling. "We live
in an age obsessed with speed, so it may feel counter-intuitive that you can improve
performance by slowing something down. However, our new concept shows that if you reduce
air velocity, you can avoid problems often encountered in conventional server cooling and
gain a lot of benefits such as increased energy efficiency and reduced energy costs. Just
the fact that Low Speed Ventilation technology allows server halls to operate under normal
air pressure makes it a true innovation."
LSV technology, which is already operating successfully at server halls in the
Netherlands, is now available in the Nordic countries.
LSV: key benefits Â
- Lowest PUE - Power Usage Effectiveness of 1.07 compared to market average for
global data centers of 1.5.
- Lower energy consumption - "leaner cooling", as EC fans distribute air to servers at
low speed.
- Easier maintenance - LSV coolers are located outside the server room, making service
access more convenient.
- Lower costs - reduces cooling-related energy bills by up to 30% depending on size,
type and location of the data center.
LSV coolers for server halls join the existing range of Alfa Laval products such as
gasketed plate heat exchangers, dry coolers and adiabatic coolers, which can be combined
