LG Adopts In-Design Physical Verification with IC Compiler and IC Validator after Multiple Successful Tapeouts
Synopsys IC Validator Enables LG Electronics to Accelerate Manufacturing Compliance
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., April 15, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --
Highlights
-- Synopsys' In-Design physical verification with IC Validator and IC
Compiler place-and-route solution accelerates LG Electronics'
manufacturing closure by two weeks
-- Multiple successful tapeouts using In-Design physical verification
demonstrate accelerated manufacturing closure for high-performance core
design
-- LG Electronics has adopted Synopsys' IC Validator as part of their
ARM(®)-based design implementation flow
Synopsys, Inc. (Nasdaq:SNPS), a global leader providing software, IP and services used to accelerate innovation in chips and electronic systems, today announced that LG Electronics, Inc. has adopted IC Validator, Synopsys' physical verification applications tool, as part of their design implementation flow for ARM(®) processors. Key to LG Electronics' adoption was IC Validator's In-Design technology integration with Synopsys' IC Compiler((TM)) place-and-route solution. In contrast to the older iterative approach of physical design followed by verification, the In-Design approach accelerated manufacturing compliance for LG Electronics by two weeks.
"Competitive implementation of ARM processors in our designs is critical to market leadership and drives our platform strategy," said Dr. Woo-Hyun Paik, Research Fellow of SIC R&D Lab, at LG Electronics. "We found IC Validator's In-Design approach to physical verification crucial to ensuring manufacturing compliance while honoring the performance, power and other constraints of complex, high-performance, energy-efficient processor design. In our recent tapeouts, we have successfully used key IC Validator capabilities, including timing-aware fill and automatic design rule checks (DRC) repair, enabling us to achieve manufacturing compliance ahead of schedule."
With feature geometries shrinking, the number and complexity of DRC needed to achieve manufacturing compliance has grown exponentially. This has rendered the traditional physical verification approach, which relies on modifications to design after the GDSII has been generated, disadvantageous. The traditional approach can create multiple discover-then-fix iterations and can lead to suboptimal results. Examples are metal-fill insertion and design-rule checking, which today are universally mandated manufacturability compliance steps. The traditional approach would require physical designers to stream out the timing-closed, post-fill design for signoff validation and then stream it back in to fix any errors, setting the stage for multiple iterations. The same concerns are also applicable to the traditional approach to generalized design rule checking after the design has been completed, potentially leading to late-stage surprises and ensuing expensive iterations that can significantly impact tapeout schedules.
In-Design physical verification with IC Validator addresses these manufacturability challenges within the IC Compiler environment. The well-integrated flow enables an optimized metal-fill flow that is not only timing aware with sign-off quality, but also avoids expensive and error prone stream-outs and stream-ins. For design rule checking, the In-Design flow uses foundry-qualified rule decks to flag errors in the layout and also drive automated repair, potentially saving days compared to the traditional approach of post-design validation and subsequent manual repairs.
"In-Design physical verification with IC Compiler and IC Validator exemplifies how smart technology integration of the right platforms offers a high-efficiency turnkey solution to enable designers to accelerate time to tapeout," said Antun Domic, senior vice president and general manager of Synopsys' implementation group. "By adopting In-Design physical verification with IC Compiler and IC Validator, LG Electronics is taking advantage of Synopsys' platform integration that offers the optimal solution for high-performance, energy-efficient ARM processor implementation."

Radware Unveils Comprehensive SDN Strategy and Introduces New SDN Application: DefenseFlow[TM]
DefenseFlow[TM]leverages SDN technologies to provide DoS & DDoS protection as a native network service - proactively defends against network flood attacks and to automate the provisioning of an attack mitigation service
MAHWAH, New Jersey, April 15, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --
Radware SDN strategy unveiled today provides a comprehensive SDN framework, outlining
support for three key dimensions: SDN applications - building SDN applications that
optimize ADC and security services by programming the network; SDN eco-system -
compatibility with the industry's leading SDN vendors; related SDN technology support -
extending application programming interfaces (APIs) and supporting network protocols such
as VX-LAN.
Radware's strategy emphasizes SDN as an enabling architecture to revolutionize the way
application delivery and security services are implemented and managed. Using Radware's
SDN applications, application delivery and security move from a point devices based
deployment to comprehensive network-wide services.
Radware's SDN applications use the programmability nature of software defined networks
to become part of the service rather than just hosting it. The overall solution provides
customers with simpler implementations of the ADC and security services that become highly
scalable and easier to operate.
The SDN eco-system is a critical focus as it will enable Radware's security and
application delivery solutions to integrate into the environments of the industry's
leading SDN vendors through extensive joint design, development and certification.
"While SDN has received a lot of attention recently, enterprise and carriers are
challenged to actually leverage the benefits of this new network evolution," said Avi
Chesla, chief technology officer, Radware. "Our approach is to provide a set of
fully-functional SDN applications that empower our customers to build application aware
networks which dramatically increase their value. DefenseFlow[TM] is the first in a line
of SDN applications we'll be introducing this year that harness the power and cost savings
of SDN."
DefenseFlow[TM], Radware's first commercial SDN application, enables network operators
to program the network and provide automated DoS & DDoS detection and protection as a

with a passion for manager-games. We work continuously on improving our product to satisfy
an increasingly demanding audience. Since the launch of the game we have revised the match

IBM Drives Flash Technology Deeper into the Enterprise to Speed Big Data Analytics
Company makes $1 billion investment in Flash; opens new Centers of Competency for client engagements; announces Flash deal with Sprint
ARMONK, N.Y., April 11, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM (NYSE: IBM) today unveiled a strategic initiative to drive Flash technology further into the enterprise to help organizations better tackle the mounting challenges of Big Data.
Flash, a highly efficient re-writable memory, can speed the response times of information gathering in servers and storage systems from milliseconds to microseconds - orders of magnitude faster. Because it contains no moving parts, the technology is also more reliable, durable and more energy efficient than spinning hard drives.
Such benefits have led Flash to pervade the consumer electronics industry and be built into everything from cell phones to tablets. Today, as organizations are challenged by swelling data volumes, increasing demand for faster analytic insights, and rising data center energy costs, Flash is quickly becoming a key requirement to enable the Smarter Enterprise.
"The economics and performance of Flash are at a point where the technology can have a revolutionary impact on enterprises, especially for transaction-intensive applications," said Ambuj Goyal, General Manager, Systems Storage, IBM Systems & Technology Group. "The confluence of Big Data, social, mobile and cloud technologies is creating an environment in the enterprise that demands faster, more efficient, access to business insights, and Flash can provide that access quickly."
To help lead this transformation, IBM today announced that it is investing $1 billion in research and development to design, create and integrate new Flash solutions into its expanding portfolio of servers, storage systems and middleware.
As part of that commitment, the company today also announced plans to open 12 Centers of Competency around the globe. These sites will enable clients to run proof-of-concept scenarios with real-world data to measure the projected performance gains that can be achieved with IBM Flash solutions. Clients will see first-hand how IBM Flash solutions can provide real-time decision support for operational information, and help improve the performance of mission-critical workloads, such as credit card processing, stock exchange transactions, manufacturing and order processing systems. IBM is currently targeting Centers of Competency in China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Singapore, South America, U.K., and the U.S to all be operational by the end of the year.
IBM today also announced the availability of the IBM FlashSystem line of all-Flash storage appliances, which are based on technology acquired from Texas Memory Systems. The IBM FlashSystem provides organizations instant access to the benefits of Flash. The IBM FlashSystem 820, for example, is the size of a pizza box, is 20 times faster than spinning hard drives, and can store up to 24 terabytes of data - more than twice the amount of printed information stored in the U.S. Library of Congress.
Flash systems can provide up to 90 percent reductions in transaction times for applications like banking, trading, and telecommunications; up to 85 percent reductions in batch processing times in applications like enterprise resource planning and business analytics; and up to 80 percent reductions of energy consumption in data center consolidations and cloud deployments.
Sprint Nextel Corp., an early adopter of Flash, recently completed a deal with IBM to install nine flash storage systems in its data center, for a total of 150TB of additional Flash storage. The company was looking for a way to improve the performance and efficiency of its phone activation application. When performance rose and energy consumption dropped, the company began to expand the technology to other parts of the data center. According to Sprint officials, this latest installation is part of the company's new strategy to move its most active data to all-Flash storage systems.
The new IBM FlashSystem joins the company's growing stable of all-Flash and hybrid (disk/Flash) solutions which include IBM Storwize V7000, IBM System Storage DS8870, and the IBM XIV Storage System.

TRW Launches Integrated Remote Keyless Entry And Tire Pressure Monitoring System
LIVONIA, Mich., April 11, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- TRW Automotive Holdings Corp. (NYSE: TRW) the global leader in automotive safety systems, today announced it has launched its first integrated Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) and Direct Tire Pressure Monitoring system (TPMS) with a major Japanese vehicle manufacturer. The system delivers RKE and TPM functions with fewer parts.
"Integrating RKE and TPMS can offer enhanced value and performance," said Ken Kaiser, vice president, Global Electronics Engineering. "By eliminating the need for separate receivers for the two systems we can maintain performance characteristics, use less space, reduce system weight and wiring complexity, and ultimately lower material and assembly costs."
This system is also leading the industry in reducing risks associated with Radio Frequency (RF) interference by utilizing multiple frequencies. In-vehicle wireless communication systems have grown exponentially in the last few years, particularly since the Federal mandate of Tire Pressure Monitoring systems in 2007. With such wireless communication growth comes an increase in risk of RF interference. The use of multiple frequencies in this system ensures RKE functionality in the event one of the frequencies is unavailable.
This technology change is transparent to vehicle owners as there is no discernible change to the RKE key fob layout or performance - the transmitted commands are received by a single smart receiver/ECU that processes information from the RKE fobs, and also the temperature and pressure signals sent from the transmitters located in the TPMS sensor units in each individual tire. The integrated ECU decodes the signals to activate the lock/unlock function for vehicle doors and the trunk, and provides tire pressure warning information to the driver in the same way as conventional RKE and TPMS receivers.

Omnilink® Teams with Sprint to Enable Trailer Tracking and Management
New Asset Optimization Solution Helps Fleet Owners Gain a Competitive Advantage
ATLANTA, April 11, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --Omnilink today announced a collaboration with Sprint to offer Omnilink Asset Tracker for Trailers(TM), which enables fleet owners to locate and manage trailers across the United States. A turnkey solution featuring hardware, software and service, Omnilink Asset Tracker for Trailers(TM) provides transportation, construction, retail and other companies with new options for managing their assets.
Omnilink Asset Tracker for Trailers combines the Omnilink Asset Tracker(TM) application with the CalAmp TTU-720 device, which uses GPS and Sprint's nationwide Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) network to provide fleet managers with the exact location of every trailer. With this real-time and/or historical information, fleet managers can:
-- Improve security and utilization of remote trailers with configurable
alerts for trailers that are moved or sit idle for too long.
-- Reduce costs by automating inventory management, saving fuel and time
searching for remote trailers and freeing staff to focus on more
productive activities.
-- Know the location of all trailers in-transit to improve responsiveness
and provide delivery status to customers, particularly those with
just-in-time supply chains.
-- Increase revenue by increasing the frequency of trailer turns between
arrival and departure.
-- Increase billable hours by accounting for the actual time trailers are
detained or stored at a customer site.
"In today's economy, fleet owners can't afford to have any more trailers sitting idle without producing revenue," said Wayne Ward, vice president-M2M and Connected Transportation, Sprint. "Our joint solution with Omnilink uses our network technology to help keep cargo moving. It determines which trailers are parked in each yard, which trailers need to be picked up, and the precise GPS location of every trailer in a fleet, giving owners real-time location information necessary to ensure that every trailer is maximizing revenue. Wireless asset tracking is another example of how connected devices are changing every aspect of our lives, impacting how we work and live."
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, fleets are accumulating more than three trailers per tractor to accommodate for the lack of trailer visibility and status. This leaves costly, non-revenue generating trailers sitting idle at customer locations or altogether lost, wasting resources in the process.
"Our continued collaboration with Sprint expands our portfolio of tracking solutions, allowing us to better address the needs of fleets, offering them an out-of-the-box solution to optimize the use of a fleet's inventory of trailers, improve trailer and cargo security and increase carrier profitability," said Steve Hudson, chief development officer at Omnilink. "By eliminating the wasted time and resources many fleets have been forced to struggle with, fleet managers can instead focus on growing and improving their business."

DeLorme Launches Next Generation of its Award-Winning inReach Satellite Communicator with GPS - Essential Gear for Outdoor Enthusiasts, Hunters, Boaters, Recreational Aviators, and Global Travelers
inReach SE with Color Screen and Virtual Keyboard Offers Expanded Standalone Text Messaging Capabilities, Adjustable Tracking Intervals, Pairs with Popular Mobile Devices
YARMOUTH, Maine, April 11, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- DeLorme, the innovation leader in personal satellite communications and navigation technology, has announced the launch of its newest product inReach SE (Screen Edition). With 90% of the world's surface lacking cell phone coverage, inReach SE is essential gear for the traveler or outdoor adventurer to keep them connected and safe anywhere in the world. inReach SE remains the only satellite communication device that can both send and receive text messages in its price category.
The newest generation of inReach builds on DeLorme's award-winning technology to keep outdoor adventurers, boaters, aviators and travelers connected when off the grid or in parts of the world where cellular communications are limited. With the expanded standalone capabilities of inReach SE, users benefit from a color screen, virtual keyboard, slim design and a long-lasting internal lithium battery. In standalone mode, inReach SE provides free-form texting capabilities of up to 160 characters to any cell phone number, email address or social media page.
Using DeLorme's Earthmate app, inReach SE pairs wirelessly with popular smartphones and tablets to access topographic maps and NOAA charts and to make text messaging even more convenient.
With the ability to maintain satellite signal lock even in difficult GPS environments, inReach SE also offers global SOS capabilities, adjustable tracking intervals from 10 minutes to four hours, and remote real-time follow-me/find-me tracking and ping-me locating. In the event of an emergency, the interactive SOS capability of inReach automatically triggers remote tracking and allows users to describe and update their situation so proper resources can be deployed.
"Whether you're deep in the backwoods, floating on a remote lake, or simply travelling abroad, anyone can benefit from the comprehensive functionality of inReach SE," said Michael Heffron, DeLorme CEO. "Over the last two years we have been listening to customer feedback, so the next generation of inReach includes many new features based on their input. The internal rechargeable battery and the on-screen, free-form texting are especially beneficial, making on-the-go communications more convenient and delivering peace of mind to family and friends easier than ever before."
inReach operates over the Iridium satellite network, providing truly global two-way satellite communications, high network reliability and low-latency data links (less than 60 second delivery of messages end-to-end) anywhere on Earth, with no gaps, fringe or weak signal areas.
The follow me / find me tracking feature of inReach provides GPS position updates allowing family and friends to follow the user's trip as it happens. Family and friends can log into a dedicated MapShare page to follow a detailed breadcrumb trail, ping a location, and send messages to the inReach owner. In the event of an emergency, the built-in SOS button can be activated to trigger a distress alert with delivery confirmation and it automatically activates the remote GPS tracking feature. GPS tracking assists search-and-rescue personnel with homing in on the user's location, whether stationary or on the move.
Pairing the inReach SE via Bluetooth with the free Earthmate app turns a mobile device into a global satellite communicator and navigation tool. Real-time GPS location, tracking and text messages are overlaid on the digital maps for easy navigation and position location. inReach owners get exclusive, unlimited access to DeLorme's topographic maps and North American NOAA charts, which can be downloaded via an Internet connection prior to departure and remain available in the Earthmate app even when outside cellular coverage.
Suggested retail price for inReach SE is $299, with annual satellite subscriptions beginning at $9.95 per month. Four-month seasonal and special aviation plans with more frequent tracking intervals are also available.
inReach SE is available at most major retail and online outlets. A list of retailers is available at http://www.inreachdelorme.com.

Microsemi Achieves NIST Certification on EnforcIT(TM) Cryptography IP Cores for FPGA and ASIC Designs
Secures Critical Data with DOD Grade U.S.-Developed Suite B Cryptography
ALISO VIEJO, Calif., April 11, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --Microsemi Corporation (Nasdaq: MSCC), a leading provider of semiconductor solutions differentiated by power, security, reliability and performance, announced it has achieved National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) algorithmic certification on its U.S.-developed EnforcIT(TM) Cryptography Suite of National Security Agency (NSA) Suite B algorithms.
The EnforcIT Cryptography Suite contains intellectual property (IP) cores for the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), the XTS-AES Tweakable Block Cipher, Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC), and the Secure Hashing Algorithm (SHA-2) with HMAC. These cryptography cores support multiple key sizes and block cipher modes. In addition, the highly configurable cores address security, area and throughput needs on all standard SRAM FPGAs, flash-based FPGAs and ASICs.
"Microsemi has a long track record of providing cryptography products that deliver outstanding security and value to the United States government and Department of Defense," said Charlie Leader, vice president at Microsemi. "Earning this important certification for our EnforcIT Cryptography Suite is yet another step forward in our quest to provide increasingly secure, industry-qualified solutions that meet or exceed our customers' critical data needs."
"NIST algorithmic certification ensures that our NSA Suite B cryptography cores meet the strictest standards," said Michael Mehlberg, vice president of product management at Microsemi. "As a result, we can now offer our customers further assurance that their critical data is safely stored and transmitted when integrated into an FPGA or ASIC design."
Microsemi's EnforcIT Cryptography Suite includes many of the key sizes, operating modes and features expected in a full NSA Suite B cryptography algorithmic implementation. Specifically, the AES core provides 128, 192 and 256-bit key size support in CBC, CFB, OFB and CTR block cipher modes. The ECC core is an elliptic curve arithmetic unit with support for elliptic curve digital signature algorithms (ECDSA) on 256-bit prime fields (384 and 521-bit key sizes can be supported upon request). SHA-2 supports digest computation for 224, 256, 384 and 512-bit digest sizes with bit-length messages. HMAC supports any combination of SHA-2 algorithms, bit-length keys and messages. XTS-AES supports 128, 192 and 256-bit key sizes; whole block ciphering; and provides length-preserving encryption.
The EnforcIT Cryptography Suite is designed for flexibility in speed and security, and now provides higher assurance with NIST algorithmic certification. All IP cores are designed for low-risk integration into nearly all standard SRAM or flash-based FPGAs, and could be instantiated into an ASIC design. These and other Microsemi cryptography products including WhiteboxCRYPTO(TM) are designed and built in the U.S. in Microsemi's trusted facility located in Phoenix, Ariz. and in West Lafayette, Ind.
EnforcIT Cryptography Suite Key Features:
-- NIST-certified AES supporting 128-bit, 192-bit and 256-bit keys,
encryption and decryption with CBC, CFB, CTR and OFB block cipher modes
-- NIST-certified ECC P-256 key validation and verification
-- NIST-certified SHA-2 224-bit, 256-bit, 384-bit and 512-bit hashing with
support for HMAC

implementations to prevent tampering and reverse engineering
The EnforcIT Cryptography Suite was validated by InfoGard Laboratories, Inc. and certified by the NIST. The certification is expected to be posted to the NIST website later this month:
Microsemi has full design, manufacture and test capabilities for a wide variety of multiple component packages (MCPs), commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) memory, microprocessors, FPGA designs, secure software engineering and a combination MCPs for demanding applications. These microelectronic products can also be ruggedized and processed for tamper resistance. All devices are subjected to extensive environmental and temperature testing. Microsemi's maintains a DMEA accredited facility in Phoenix, Ariz. for assembly and test and a U.S. only facility in West Lafayette, Ind. for systems security engineering. Its quality and inspection system requirements are certified to MIL-PRF-38534 Class H and K, MIL-PRF-38535 Class Q, ISO 9001:2008 and AS9100. For more information call 765-775-1004.

AVG Technologies Brings Family Safety to Windows Phone 8 Devices
AMSTERDAM and SAN FRANCISCO, April 11, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --
AVG Technologies [http://www.avg.com ] N.V. (NYSE: AVG), the provider of Internet and
mobile security, privacy and optimization to 146 million active users, has today announced
that its AVG Family Safety mobile application is now available for Microsoft Windows(R)
Phone 8 devices.
Aimed at protecting children while they surf the web on mobile devices, AVG Family
Safety [http://www.avg.com/avg-family-safety-mobile-win ] is a free, secure, mobile web
browser, previously only available for Apple devices and Windows Phone 7.5. Adding to the
existing built-in mobile security already provided by Microsoft, the application uses data
from AVG's Linkscanner(R) technology to block websites that are known to be malicious, and
its own filters will also prevent visits to any sites that are deemed to contain mature
and inappropriate content such as anything relating to violence, drugs or pornography.
The latest version of AVG Family Safety is ideally suited for use in the Windows Phone
8 Kid's Corner [http://www.windowsphone.com/en-US/how-to/wp8/basics/set-up-kids-corner ].
This newly introduced feature allows parents to set up an area on their smartphones where
children can play with pre-added games, apps, music and videos, but can't access the
content or applications on the rest of the device. Adding AVG Family Safety as the default
browser on this section is an easy and great way for parents to open up the Internet to
their children but within a safe environment.
"Parents today know only too well the fascination that smartphones hold for children.
I am sure that we've all been guilty in the past of handing over our device, with our only
concern being about its safety rather than the safety of our children using it," said Tony
Anscombe, AVG's Senior Security Evangelist. "But are we stopping to consider the type of
content we could be exposing our children to? As our previous research has shown, the
digital literacy of children nowadays is astounding so while it is absolutely important to
nurture this, and allow our children to experience the online world, it has to be in a
controlled way. AVG Family Safety gives parents that peace of mind."
As part of its Digital Diaries [http://www.avgdigitaldiaries.com ] research series,
AVG discovered that more than twice the number of children aged 2-5 years could play with
a smartphone application (26 per cent) versus tying their shoelaces (11 per cent). The
research, entitled Digital Skills, also showed that more children can open a web browser
(29 per cent) than swim unaided (17 per cent).
For further family protection, users who already have an AVG Family Safety account for
their home computer can combine this with their Windows Phone 8 application to access even
more security features. These include easily customizable lists of allowed and blocked
sites, as well as the ability to block social networking sites per mobile device.
AVG's mission is to simplify, optimize and secure the Internet experience, providing
peace of mind to a connected world. AVG's powerful yet easy-notto use software and
online services put users in control of their Internet experience. By choosing AVG's
software and services, users become part of a trusted global community that benefits from
inherent network effects, mutual protection and support. AVG has grown its user base to
146 million active users as of December 31, 2012 and offers a product portfolio that
targets the consumer and small business markets and includes Internet security, PC
performance optimization, online backup, mobile security, identity protection and family
safety software.
Automated Translation Leads Language Technology Trends
Multimedia, Multilingual Search Drive Global Demand for Language Services
WASHINGTON, April 10, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Advancements in automated translation technology are increasing global demand for professional language services in 2013, the head of the world's leading language association said today.
Hans Fenstermacher, CEO of the Globalization and Localization Association (GALA), said automated machine translation, whereby computers translate content from one language to another without human intervention, are now becoming a mainstream tool for communication.
"Machine translation is approaching accuracy rates in the neighborhood of 80 percent today," Fenstermacher said. "By combining automated translation with the skills of trained professionals, it's now possible to increase the amount of multilingual communication dramatically--without sacrificing quality. The benefits for the language industry and the world's populations as a whole are staggering."
GALA cites three other technology trends that are driving demand for expanded language services:
-- Multimedia technologies will push the communication enterprise in areas
like speech-to-speech translation, multilingual audio and video.
-- Multilingual search will allow people to find anything they want in any
language they want, no matter what language it was created in.
-- Language technologies will continue to embrace less widely spoken
languages, such as those in Asia and Africa, fueling demand for
collaborative localization and managed workflows in multiple directions
simultaneously.
"Technology advancements not only benefit the public as users of language services, they support professional language providers as well," Fenstermacher said. "The days when translation was a cottage industry run by people who basically worked in isolation are over. Technology is propelling translation services--and the language industry itself--to the forefront of global communication."

The Instant Away feature allows homeowners to balance comfort and energy savings: on your way out the door, simply tell the Honeywell Wi-Fi thermostat when you will be back and it can start saving energy instantly while you are gone.
The Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat converts an energy-saving product into a design tool. "As home decor evolves, consumers want their thermostat to complement their decor," said Beth Wozniak, president of Honeywell Environmental and Combustion Controls. "It puts creativity in the hands of the homeowner with our Color Match feature. Just as they pick fabrics and paint, they can choose what the Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat looks like in their home."
The Honeywell Wi-Fi thermostat's innovative design, 60 percent smaller than other connected thermostat models, is a first in the do-it-yourself (DIY) market:
-- A free smartphone app - Honeywell's patented Total Connect Comfort app -
is available in iTunes Store and Google Play. Homeowners can be
thousands of miles away from home or have a vacation home, yet still
control their settings and energy usage, resulting in significant cost
savings.
-- Temperature is controlled within +/- 1 degree, making it one of the most
precise and dependable thermostats on the market. Other "smart"
thermostats can swing as much as +/- 4 degrees, an inefficiency that
causes heating and cooling systems to work overtime to achieve the
desired temperature and forces homeowners to constantly modify settings
to reach their comfort level.
-- Installation is intuitive and fast.
-- The thermostat's "home display" shows the room's actual temperature and
humidity levels, as well as outside weather conditions. Homeowners can
choose to illuminate the home display making it easy to see from
anywhere in the room, or allow it to "sleep," adding a convenient level
of customization not available in other brands.
-- Filter reminders are specific to the filter brand and amount of time the
furnace is on/off, so filters are replaced only when absolutely needed,
saving money.
Contained within the elegantly designed thermostat is Honeywell's scheduling technology that learns homeowners' daily schedule in just minutes. Other thermostats require several days of homeowner adjustments to teach the thermostat about their lifestyles and habits.
The Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat from Honeywell will be available at home improvement centers across the United States and Canada beginning in May 2013 at a suggested retail price of $249. Homeowners who prefer installation via their heating and cooling contractor can ask for the Prestige IAQ, which has all the features of the Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat plus indoor air quality controls. AMEC Stakes Out Position In Dry Etch Technology For Memory Devices
Company's New Single-Station Chamber Advanced Dielectric Etcher Qualified by Leading Korean Customer for Critical Flash Applications at 20nm and Below
SHANGHAI and SEOUL, South Korea, April 10, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Advanced Micro-Fabrication Equipment Inc. (AMEC) said today that it has developed a Single-Station Chamber Advanced Dielectric Etcher (Primo SSC AD-RIE(TM)) capable of processing the most rigorous semiconductor applications. In less than 12 months, the Primo SSC AD-RIE system was qualified by a leading Korean semiconductor manufacturer for critical Flash applications at 20nm and below. The customer has since placed an order for the tool and is now qualifying it for 15nm applications. The new etcher embodies the innovations contained in AMEC's dual-station chamber Primo D-RIE etch platform which is already well entrenched in leading memory and logic fabs across Asia.
The technology achievement marks an inflection point for AMEC -- China's largest provider of capital equipment for global manufacturers of semiconductors and LEDs. With operations and R&D centered in Shanghai, and global sales and marketing in Singapore, the company is led by a team of semiconductor equipment experts from Silicon Valley and Asia. Today's milestone validates AMEC's capability to provide highly competitive tools and technology solutions for customers' most advanced device requirements. More importantly, it places the company in an elite group of Etch leaders comprised of a handful of US and Japanese players.
Beyond Korea, companies in Taiwan, Japan and other regions are expressing interest in the Primo SSC AD-RIE etcher. This is not unexpected. The extreme challenges of dry etching at 20nm and below has virtually excluded small etch players from the vendor pool, allowing just a few leaders to dominate. The Primo SSC AD-RIE changes that dynamic and offers the industry an alternative new choice. AMEC is now preparing to engage in wafer demonstration runs. The company is also working with select customers on 15nm Flash memory and VNAND process development.
To support its Korean customers and further expand business in the region, AMEC Korea will establish a local Research and Development center this year.
AMEC Chairman and CEO Gerald Z. Yin paid tribute to the Korean customer for its close collaboration. Such collaboration is essential for the development of advanced technology that solves difficult technical problems. He added, "AMEC recognizes the importance of investing in a local hub to provide exceptional service to our Korean customers. With this in mind, we are accelerating our Korean localization plan and boosting it with elements that include intellectual property protection, as well as onsite product enhancement initiatives and responsive field support."
Commenting further on AMEC's localization strategy for Korea, KI Yoon, General Manager for Korea, added, "We're diligently developing local supply sources and seeking reliable collaboration partners not just for Korea, but for the global market as well. This will enable us to provide supply pathways to Korean customers with fabs in Korea who are also constructing fabs in China. On the technology front, we continue to innovate solutions to address the technical priorities of our Korean customers' and others worldwide. This includes development of a third-generation CCP oxide etcher and ICP etcher, as well as 450mm product lines."
Primo SSC AD-RIE is a trademark of AMEC.
