Illinois Alarm Executives Helped Create New System

AURORA, Ill., Sept. 6, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- A revolutionary new system that will streamline emergency notifications is coming to Illinois.  The new system, Automated Secure Alarm Protocol (ASAP), offers an innovative and cost-effective way of sending alarm signals directly to police and fire dispatchers in seconds without the need for a telephone call from an alarm monitoring station.

The new system, which was developed by the Central Station Alarm Association (CSAA) and the Association of Public Safety Communications Officials International (APCO), is already in place in Houston, Texas, York County and Richmond, Virginia with outstanding results and will be available in Illinois by the end of the year.

Ed Bonifas, vice president at Aurora, Illinois-based Alarm Detection Systems, Inc., helped spearhead the creation of the ASAP system as President of CSAA.

"This new protocol ends the single most discussed 'justification' for the takeover of alarm monitoring by fire departments or fire districts," said Bonifas. "This program demonstrates the true innovations that occur through public and private partnerships such as the one between CSAA and APCO."

"Businesses will continue to receive a full range of services from their alarm companies under this program," said Bonifas.  "In the few cities that have mandated municipal monitoring programs businesses are forced to use one vendor and often pay two to three times the cost of identical equipment charged on the open market."

"Private enterprise, working with public safety officials, will continue to be the impetus for new innovations in public safety," said Bonifas.  "Government monopolies rarely innovate and the lack of competition increases costs."

"Alarm companies offer the same radio systems as government agencies and even greater savings for businesses that upgrade from telephone lines," said Bonifas.

"While dispatches through alarm central stations remain the standard for the country and have proven highly effective, the industry supported the creation of the ASAP system and will be able to implement it more quickly and with less disruption than establishing municipal systems that require the replacement of hundreds of radios from a single vendor," said Kevin Lehan, Executive Director of the Illinois Electronic Security Association.

One argument for municipal alarm monitoring is that it allows the government to make money by charging businesses for monitoring their alarms. "Government should never be in competition with taxpaying businesses," said Bonifas.  "Government should never be in the position of providing one company with an advantage in the marketplace that curtails competition that provides the best service and price to businesses."

Chelsio Announces Two New Unified Wire Adapters for Data Center Networking and Storage

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Sept. 6, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Chelsio Communications, a leading provider of 10Gb Ethernet Unified Wire adapters and ASICs, today announced the T440-LP-CR, a 4x10GbE Unified Wire adapter that enables 10/40 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity to meet the high performance demands of data center server and network attached storage systems.  Chelsio has also introduced the T420-BT, a dual-port 10GBase-T Ethernet adapter. 

Both new adapters are based on the fourth generation T4 technology, and enable a Unified Wire for LAN, SAN and cluster traffic, providing full offload of TCP, UDP, iSCSI, FCoE and iWARP traffic simultaneously with support for every major virtualization technology in the market.  The cards are optimized for cloud computing, HPC, storage and other data center applications.  Benchmark testing of the T440 showed saturated throughput for the PCI Express 2.0 interface and latencies of sub 3.0 microsecond for WD-UDP and 5.0 microsecond for TCP traffic.

The T440-LP-CR is a 4x10Gb Ethernet, low profile, PCI 2.0 Express bus interface, with 32,000 offloaded connections and one QSFP+ port that uses standard cables or a single octopus cable that has a QSFP+ transceiver on one end and four SFP+ transceivers on the other end.  This enables the Unified Wire adapter to deliver 40Gb bandwidth without the need for a premium 40Gb Ethernet switch port, allowing the lowest cost per gigabit link in the market.

The T440-LP-CR is particularly well-suited to deliver storage applications via the high throughput and the ability to run NFS, Lustre and other file systems over RDMA.  In small storage clusters the T440-LP-CR easily aggregates four servers into a storage target and removes the need for additional equipment altogether, resulting in significantly lower IT costs.

The T420-BT is a dual port 10GBase-T Unified Wire adapter with PCI Express 2.0 host bus interface.  It is capable of providing two 1/10GbE ports by using standard RJ-45 connectors with twisted pair Cat-6a cables. 

US List pricing for the T440-LP-CR is $899 and the T420-BT is $999. Both cards are available now from Chelsio and its distributors.

Appearing in SANUS booth #4154: New AV racks and an environmental control accessory, ultra-thin flat-panel TV wall mounts, AV furniture, and an iPhone® app that provides assistance for simplifying TV mount installation

INDIANAPOLIS, Sept. 6, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- SANUS, the leading global brand of audio/video mounts, furnishings and consumer electronics accessories, will be debuting an assortment of its innovative new AV accessory products at this year's CEDIA EXPO, the leading tradeshow in the residential electronic systems industry.

AV Racks and Accessories

Appearing in SANUS booth #4154 at the Indianapolis show from September 8-10 will be the highly anticipated SANUS EcoSystem(TM), a revolutionary multi-volt power supply and a suite of AV rack accessories designed to create a seamless interaction between low-voltage and household line voltage. When used together, the SANUS EcoSystem will save installers time, space, and easily provide an aesthetically perfect AV rack.

The EcoSystem includes a multi-volt power supply, which consists of power switches, USB ports and 12 outlets with both 12V and 5V options. The accessory also includes a thermostat kit that actively monitors temperature inside the rack. Should the temperature inside the rack reach 85 degrees, the thermostat automatically activates fans, cooling the rack to a maximum of 75 degrees. Other features that make up the SANUS EcoSystem include LED task and work lights, multiple fan options, a thermometer and wire. The SANUS EcoSystem is expected to be available for purchase in November 2011.

Offered in various sizes including a 15U model (CFR2115), 27U model (CFR2127), 36U model, (CFR2136), and a 44U model, (CFR2144), the new 100 Series racks feature removable side and back panels for easier access to components. A 3U panel located at the back of the racks can be placed on top or bottom of the rack's rear door for customization in wiring. Vented shelves with backstops, and cooling shelves at the top and bottom of each rack ensure proper airflow for AV equipment. New add-on accessories are now available, including vented blanking panels and shelves, ganging kit, tie bars, solid steel blanking panels and power strips. The Component 100 Series racks are expected to be shipping before the end of 2011.

TV Wall Mounts and On-Wall Shelving

SANUS will be debuting three new Super Slim wall mounts for flat-panel TVs. SANUS' Super Slim mount category offers brackets that allow TVs to be mounted as close to the wall as possible, accentuating the thin appearance of flat-panel screens. The new VLF320 and VMF322 mounts allow TV placement incredibly close to the wall while also offering full-motion capabilities, a benefit other ultra-thin mounts on the market don't offer. The VLF320 offers 20 inches of extension for TVs 37" - 65". The VMF322 offers 22 inches of extension for TVs 26" - 47".  Both models feature an integrated cable management system that hides all wiring and cabling within the extension arm. With integrated tilting capabilities, the VLF320 and VMF322 can be tilted with the touch of a finger, allowing for effortless adjustment of the TV's viewing angle. Post-install leveling adjustments ensure TVs are perfectly positioned after hanging. The VLF320 includes decorative covers that conceal mounting hardware for a finished look. Both mounts will be available in early 2012.

The VSL12 is a Super Slim low-profile mount that highlights the sleek look of LCD and LED TVs by placing them only .62" from the wall. Compatible with 13" - 26" TVs, the VSL12 features a two-piece design for quick and easy installation and a click-lock feature for added safety. The VSL12 will be shipping in late September.

Another exciting new product from SANUS, the VMA401 on-wall shelf is designed to hold components up to 15 lbs. The VMA401's slim profile (1.38") works well with mounted ultra-thin TVs because the shelf can be mounted directly below the TV for a seamless look. The VMA401 features integrated cable management for hiding and organizes cables. For those looking for a two or three shelf solution, multiple VMA401 units can be combined to provide a one-piece look. The product will be available before the end of 2011.

AV Furniture

At CEDIA EXPO, SANUS is excited to offer a first look at several new offerings from its Basic Series furniture line. Expertly crafted for high performance and value, all of the new Basic Series furniture can be assembled quickly without tools. New additions to the line include the BFAV546 with a modern two-tone walnut finish and dual pullout media drawers for storage. Another new model, the BFV157 features a heavy-gauge steel construction and open design to maximize airflow, while the new BFV348 provides a classic look and feel with a distressed black finish. The BVF348 is expected to be shipping in late 2011, while the BFAV546 and the BFV157 will be available in early 2012.

HDMI Cables

Several consumer electronics accessories will also be debuting in the SANUS booth during CEDIA 2011. Among them include new Super Slim HDMI cables models ELM4303, ELM4306, and ELM4308. The cables feature an ultra-flexible design making them perfect for connections behind ultra-thin TVs, which often offer little clearance and can make connection difficult. All three models are Ethernet enabled and can handle 1080p video resolution and beyond for future generation displays.  All models will be shipping in September.

iPhone App

SANUS will also introduce the iPhone version of its popular SANUS Install Tool Kit(TM) app at CEDIA 2011. transmitted to television sets through the public internet. OTT is radically
changing the value chain - content owners now have a direct connection to
consumers.

    This has raised questions on the future role of European cable TV
operators. The threat is that their role will be relegated to only offering
capacity while someone else gathers the revenue from interactive on-demand
services. The problem is that consumers can use any IP network to view TV
movies through OTT on their television sets and pay for the programming
directly to content owners. We at Teleste see that while OTT poses a threat
to Cable operators, it is also a huge opportunity for those operators who
are ready to embrace the change.

    OTT is delivering what IPTV promised - high quality and interactive
television services through IP connections. The main difference between OTT
and IPTV is openness: OTT is open and flexible whereas IPTV is inherently a
closed system. IPTV also takes away the freedom of choice from consumers. It
seems like the customers have voted and rapidly taken up OTT services.

    Today, there are close to 100 million household using OTT services. That
number is expected to almost triple to 285 million users by 2016 (TDG). It's
not all fun and games for OTT either. Bandwidth is and will in the future
become even more a bottleneck for services. 3D TV and upcoming ultra HDTV
require such high bandwidth that IP delivery networks will become a
limitation.

    What strategy should European cable TV operators adopt? The future will
not be black and white. Fact is that linear TV broadcasts are best suited
for traditional DVB delivery. Fact is that OTT offers such ease-of-use,
interactivity, cost and variety that consumers will find hard to resist. Why
not have the best of both worlds?

    Killer cocktail instead of killer app

    For cable operators, there are two possible strategies to tackle this
change: close eyes and pretend that nothing has happened or see the change
as an opportunity and innovate to grab a larger share of the customer's
wallet. The question is not about inventing a killer application, but a
killer cocktail. And we believe that this killer cocktail consists of DVB
for traditional TV and OTT/IP delivery for other interactive services. Cable
is best for high bandwidth TV services and OTT/IP delivery is best for
interactive services. The winners will be those who are able to adjust and
offer both cable and OTT delivery. Operators not embracing this opportunity
are missing a potential revenue stream and alienating customers.

    We feel that European cable TV operators are ideally positioned to
provide consumers both traditional broadcast and OTT services on a market
that is splintered along country, language, technology and historical lines
because they have two very valuable assets - bandwidth and consumer's trust.
Cable networks have the bandwidth to handle all existing and upcoming TV
services. Customers have for years trusted the operators for quality and
monthly billing relations. We believe that customers will always appreciate
the same things that made cable TV operators strong in the first place: good
quality HD video, a wide range of channels, central billing, and most
importantly, ease of use.

    What European cable operators need to complement their offering with OTT
is a service platform that will enable them to easily integrate OTT services

Designed with advanced capabilities, Elster's REXUniversal meter platform allows EnergyAxis® and other Smart Grid vendors' 900MHz radio frequency (RF) mesh communications to run natively on the identical REXUniversal meter hardware with integrated communications, economically delivering meter and network flexibility to utilities.

The fully integrated meter platform is capable of operating in various 900 MHz RF mesh Smart Grid systems without the cost penalty and additional hardware risk associated with specialized radio communication option boards. Previously, if a utility wanted to operate one vendor's communications on another vendor's meter, they had to have a separate proprietary communications card physically installed in the meter.

By integrating interoperability into a single card containing both metrology and communications, Elster's REXUniversal meter is designed to simplify updates to local area network (LAN) communication functionality and enable significant operational efficiencies by eliminating the need to remove meters and physically change-out the communications board to accomplish a system-wide network change.

On the Elster REXUniversal metering platform, communication protocols may be changed remotely to alter the device's personality, allowing the device to operate natively in different network systems without requiring hardware replacement.

With the ability to quickly and cost-effectively migrate endpoints to different communication systems, utilities are no longer locked in to just one network for their Smart Grid technology and system needs.
