National Semiconductor Introduces Industry's First 2A, Single Inductor, RGB LED Driver for Portable Projectors

Compact LM3435 with I2C Control Interface Drives LEDs Sequentially

SANTA CLARA, Calif., June 9, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- National Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE: NSM) today introduced the industry's first 2A red, green and blue (RGB) LED driver for portable projectors that drives three common anode RGB high-brightness LEDs sequentially with a single inductor.  The highly-integrated LM3435 includes an I2C control interface for LED current control.

A basic portable or pocket projector LED design today includes a separate driver for each red, green and blue LED and each circuit requires an inductor.  The design is bulky and costly, consisting of multiple components to accurately drive the LEDs.  The growing popularity of pocket projectors, often smaller than a common two and a half inch portable hard drive, poses increased space constraints.  A single LM3435 LED driver from National solves the problem by driving three RGB LEDs sequentially, powering one after another at 60 Hz and above to match the operation requirements of the latest liquid crystal on silicone (LCoS) or digital light processing (DLP) image devices.  The much simpler, compact design requires just a single inductor and a few passive components alongside the driver.

National's LM3435 LED driver joins National's family of high-brightness projector drivers that include the LM3433 and LM3434 with high frequency dimming and LM3549 0.7A sequential-mode LED driver.

National will demonstrate the LM3435 in its booth A43 in Hall 8.1 at the Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition in Guangzhou, China, June 9-12.

Technical Features of National's LM3435 LED Driver

National's LM3435 RGB LED driver is a highly-integrated, compact switching-mode constant current regulator that drives three LEDs in sequential-mode with a single inductor.  The LM3435 integrates all active components, including an N-Channel main MOSFET, P-Channel synchronous MOSFET and three N-Channel pass switches for individual LED control.  It accepts input voltage from 2.7V to 5.5V to drive constant current pulses to each red, green and blue high-brightness LED sequentially.  The level of current pulses is individually programmed linearly for 1023 steps through an I2C interface.  The maximum level of the current pulse can be set by three external current setting resistors to ground from 0.5A to 2.0A respectively.  The non-isolated flyback converter with synchronous rectification ensures buck-boost operation at high efficiency.

IPv4 Internet Addresses are Nearly Used Up: Now What?

ICSA Labs Offers Tips and Advice for Easing Transition to New Addressing System, IPv6

MECHANICSBURG, Pa., June 9, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Following World IPv6 Day on June 8, which allowed organizations and individuals with IPv6 connectivity to test the new Internet addressing system but may have left some feeling underprepared for the transition, ICSA Labs is offering seven tips to help IT organizations.

The new addressing system, known as Internet Protocol version 6, or IPv6, will replace the current system, Internet Protocol version 4, which has been in place since the 1980s and whose pool of addresses has almost been used up.

"Businesses and government agencies, especially those with large IT organizations, are now trying to figure out how to transition to IPv6," said George Japak, managing director, ICSA Labs.  "Ensuring that networks, servers and applications function properly so that business operations continue to run uninterrupted can be a real challenge, especially for organizations lacking in-house IPv6 expertise."

ICSA Labs, an independent division of Verizon and the first third-party laboratory accredited by the National Institute of Standards and Technology to test IPv6 product capabilities for federal agencies, offers the following tips to help enterprises and government agencies make a smooth transition to IPv6:

    1. Act now to avoid future interoperability issues.   The transition
       solution will likely include a combination of mechanisms, including
       systems that support both IPv4 and IPv6 simultaneously (also known as
       dual stack); tunneling mechanisms that can connect isolated IPv4-only or
       IPv6-only networks; and gateways that can translate one protocol to the
       other to support non-upgradeable legacy systems.
    2. Seek the help of a third party.  Organizations should have knowledgeable
       technical people with IPv6 expertise who are already evaluating and
       testing infrastructure and applications.  Organizations that have not
       started any evaluation or testing initiatives can obtain assistance
       through compliance and interoperability programs such as IPv6 Ready Logo
       and the USGv6 Testing Program, and security testing programs offered by
       ICSA Labs.
    3. Take inventory of IPv4 and IPv6 systems. The first IPv6 specification was
       developed in the mid 1990s; however, IPv6 code has not been scrutinized
       as thoroughly as IPv4.  Many bugs and security issues are likely to be
       discovered, so IT organizations should only purchase products that have
       been IPv6 certified.  Furthermore, organizations should assess IT systems
       to identify IPv4-only hosts, which cannot communicate directly with
       IPv6-only hosts.  For example, mainframes may be IPv4-only because many
       are associated with legacy systems.
    4. Make sure IPv6 operates at the application layer.  Although IPv6 operates
       at the network layer, network-aware applications may not function over
       IPv6 networks. For example, an application may not be able to use the
       proper socket application programming interface, which allows software to
       properly use the computer's networking capability. The application also
       may not be able handle IPv6's larger address format, or to properly
       process the domain name server responses with IPv6 records.
    5. Make certain that IPv4 security is supported in the future. Even if an
       organization is transitioning to IPv6, it is critical that security
       measures address both IPv4-specific and IPv6-specific vulnerabilities and
       environments since the transition to IPv6 could take several years.
       Security policies and configuring network protection devices such as
       firewalls and intrusion detection and prevention systems, and other
       devices, will also need to support IPv4 through the lengthy transition to
       IPv6.
    6. Remember to turn on the IPsec (IP Security) feature.  Although IPv6 was
       designed with this feature, it must be configured properly to function.
    7. Pay special attention to securing wireless networks. While IPv6 is a
       major enabler for mobility, network perimeter protection devices are
       still required, and the security architecture must also allow for trusted
       nodes outside the perimeter.

Comcast Gets Into Home Security

Is Comcast for real? I don't know anyone that has Comcast who likes Comcast. I wouldn't buy another thing from them if I could help it. I guess they're reaching for another source of revenue since they cause their customers to run screaming to someone else.

The company plans to announce tomorrow that it's expanding its Xfinity Home Security service. Last year the company began testing the service in Houston. Now it's adding six more cities. Additional cities that will get the new service include parts of Philadelphia; Portland, Ore.; Jacksonville, Fla.; Sarasota/Naples, Fla.; Chattanooga, Tenn.; and Nashville.

The Xfinity Home Security service offers traditional home security features, such as police and fire alarm protection with 24-hour monitoring. It also offers some home automation functions, such as the ability to adjust thermostats and lights remotely. And when people are not home, they can also watch live video streams from wireless cameras that are positioned in and around their home.

The technology behind the system is slightly different from traditional home security systems from companies, such as ADT. The Comcast Xfinity Home Security system works over a broadband connection rather than a phone connection. And as a result it's able to offer the video service and remote management. The company uses cellular networks as a back up to the broadband connectivity to ensure uptime.

Twitter Launces Its Own Automatic Link Shortening

Most Twitter clients have this built in, so I don't see how it will effect anything in the grand scheme of things. I guess if you're actually logging into the Twitter site to do your tweeting, this might be more important to you.

Microsoft gives Windows Live users 25GB of Skydrive space for free. This data is essentially accessible from a Windows Phone and any computer with a browser. This data can then easily be shared with other users with Live accounts. It looks like SkyDrive is going to be more functional from Windows Phone after the Mango update. At E3 Sony announced their anticipated new mobile gaming gizmo called Vita. Here's some specs:

I'm not a big mobile gamer and never played with a PSP. I'm sure there were a lot of other folks that were excited. There's two models - one that uses AT&T + Wifi for data at $299 or a Wifi only model for $249.

The Playstation TV sounds interesting, though I really wouldn't want to have to wear glasses to use it. I never thought that TV glasses were a good idea. Here's the bundle pricing:

DETROIT, June 8, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The 2012 BuickLaCrosse with eAssist(TM), which is expected to deliver 25 percent better highway fuel economy than the current model, will be priced starting at $29,960 before an $860 destination charge.

LaCrosse with eAssist uses a variety of advanced technologies and body enhancements to deliver up to 37 mpg highway fuel economy, better than the Lexus HS Hybrid and Lincoln MKZ Hybrid, as well as non-hybrids like the Acura TL, Lexus ES350 and Lincoln MKS. eAssist will be the standard powertrain for LaCrosse, which will be built at the Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas City, Kan.

The fuel economy boost that LaCrosse with eAssist offers comes from state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery system and electric motor-generator that enables regenerative braking capability. This "light electrification" system also will be available on the 2012 Buick Regal later this year.

Although eAssist is the standard powertrain, a new, more powerful and more efficient version of the direct-injected, E85-capable 3.6L V-6 with variable valve timing, Is available at no additional cost on select trim levels.  The front-wheel-drive 3.6L model is rated at an SAE-certified 303 horsepower (226 kW) - an improvement of 23 hp - and 264 lb.-ft. of torque (358 Nm). An all-wheel drive version, which is yet to be rated, also is available.

The 3.6L engine's new, integrated cylinder head/exhaust manifold design and a composite intake manifold help reduce its weight by more than 20 pounds (9 kg), which increases horsepower without any loss in fuel efficiency. The direct-injected engine also warms up faster, which can cut emissions of unburned hydrocarbons by up to 25 percent.

Additional new standard features for 2012 include dual-zone climate control, 17-inch alloy wheels, full-color driver information center, and Bluetooth and USB connectivity.

Later in the year, LaCrosse with eAssist will come with standard Buick IntelliLink, which uses Bluetooth or USB to connect the driver's smartphone to a new 8-inch, high-resolution, full-color touch screen display radio. IntelliLink expands on Buick's current Bluetooth and USB capabilities to allow smartphone control via voice activation and steering wheel-mounted controls. It also enables streaming stereo audio from the phone through services like PANDORA® Internet radio and Stitcher SmartRadio®.

Most importantly, Buick IntelliLink enables seamless integration of stowed portable devices with each vehicle's infotainment system, allowing drivers to keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.

DEARBORN, Mich., June 8, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- As Hip-Hop and R&B music enthusiasts patiently wait for the "BET AWARDS 11"to air, Ford has kicked off a sweepstakes that will award one lucky viewer the keys to a 2012 Ford Focus Titanium as part of The BET AWARDS Ford Focus Sweepstakes. The sweepstakes, which kicked off late last week, ends at 8 p.m. EDT on Sunday, June 26, and incorporates the use of Twitter as part of the final qualification process.

A Social-Media Infused Vehicle Sweepstakes

Unlike other Ford vehicle sweepstakes conducted with BET, The BET AWARDS Ford Focus Sweepstakes will incorporate for the first time the use of Twitter as part of the final qualification process for selecting the winner. Once the sweepstakes closes, BET will send out a message using Twitter to all qualified entrants confirming their eligibility along with the official hash tag to tweet about the "BET AWARDS 11". During the show, BET will highlight selected tweets from qualified entrants and then randomly select one potential grand-prize winner from among all eligible entrants during the live broadcast. The winner's name will be announced during the awards show.

"A large number of young adults are using social media tools like Twitter in order to engage with their peers on a daily basis," said Lollie. "We thought that incorporating Twitter as part of the vehicle sweepstakes would further resonate with our core audience as well as provide an additional level of exposure for the brand."

In addition to the vehicle sweepstakes, the Focus will be parked on the red carpet during the Pre-Awards Show red-carpet festivities. Ford also will sponsor the Ford Focus Social Media Lounge, the exclusive backstage area, which will feature some of the top entertainment bloggers who will have access to the celebrity talent during the entire weekend leading up to the awards show. Ford will be prominently integrated into this behind-the-scenes experience as part of its partnership with BET.
