SouthernLINC Wireless Launches Nationwide Push To Talk and Data Services
Six new "So Easy" plans feature Nationwide Service Area coverage
ATLANTA, April 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- SouthernLINC Wireless, a Southern Company (NYSE: SO), announced today that it has launched nationwide Push To Talk (PTT) two-way radio and data services.
"I am proud to say that after many years of hard work and effort, SouthernLINC Wireless has reached an agreement with a major U.S. carrier to provide nationwide Push To Talk and data services to our customers," said Bob Dawson, president and CEO of SouthernLINC Wireless. "This is a major milestone in the history of SouthernLINC Wireless."
Although SouthernLINC Wireless has had an agreement in place for cellular roaming since August 2001 and began offering the service in 2002, the carrier has continued to push the FCC to establish fair roaming guidelines for all aspects of wireless communications.
With the rapidly changing and ever-expanding market for data services, along with the increasing role such services play in facilitating communication, access to wireless data services has become more critical than ever.
In addition to coverage in Alabama, Georgia, northwest Florida and southeast Mississippi, SouthernLINC Wireless customers can now stay in touch using PTT, data, cellular, and text and picture messaging services even when they - or subscribers they regularly communicate with - travel outside the SouthernLINC Wireless Regional Service Area.
In combination with the introduction of nationwide PTT and data services, SouthernLINC Wireless also rolled out six new service plans that provide access to these services throughout the SouthernLINC Wireless Nationwide Service Area.
"Beginning today," continued Dawson, "SouthernLINC Wireless customers can talk, text, PTT and surf the Internet in more than 540 cities across the U.S. with our new So Easy nationwide service plans."
All six So Easy plans feature unlimited nationwide private PTT, unlimited regional group PTT, unlimited incoming text messages, long distance, voice mail, caller ID, call waiting, call forwarding, call hold and three-way calling.
Most So Easy plans also include unlimited night and weekend nationwide cellular minutes and either unlimited or shared nationwide cellular minutes. So Easy Share plans let users share nationwide cellular minutes with other So Easy plans on their account. Monthly access fees range from $23 to $79 per line, depending on the services selected and number of lines activated.
So Easy plans featuring nationwide services are now available at all SouthernLINC Wireless sales and service locations, through authorized SouthernLINC Wireless dealers, from SouthernLINC Wireless direct sales associates and through the online store.

CharTec Completes Integration of BDR Backup Disaster Recovery Appliance With ConnectWise for Management of MSP Client Backups
BAKERSFIELD, Calif., April 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- CharTec, the SMB channel's leading "Hardware as a Service" (HaaS)/sales training provider, announced today it has completed integration of its CharTec BDR (Backup and Disaster Recovery) appliance with ConnectWise, the leading business management solution designed exclusively for IT service providers, VARs and MSPs.
CharTec's BDR appliance provides real-time onsite data protection as well as offsite data continuity via cloud storage, while nightly self testing proves backups are successful. MSPs remotely manage CharTec BDR through an easy-to-use, web-based portal with an RMM (Remote Monitoring Management) agent for alerting and scripting. The customer or IT service company can initiate rapid and reliable restore of any backup image, any time.
With CharTec's new BDR integration, MSPs can automatically import backup statistics into their ConnectWise and use this information in reports which benefit their billing system. These reports help create accurate invoices reflecting up to the minute off-site stored capacity costs. Reports show backup success/failure, systems and partitions being protected, and create a ticket that appears not only in the partners' dashboard, but in CharTec's as well.
In addition, CharTec will also be able to track the same statistics for its MSP partners using ConnectWise to provide a high-level status overview of all their BDR systems in use.
"We believe this integration provides the most effective data protection solution MSPs can offer their clients, with the highest level of assurance that the BDR is backing up data and the billing is accurate," said Alex Rogers, CharTec's CEO. "No other market competitors perform this nightly testing for a backup's success and failure, with daily reports. Furthermore, we make it clear what is being received and completed for backup and recovery services."
CharTec will also be making some significant improvements to the BDR Appliances in mid Q2. Some of these improvements include:
-- Software upgrades to allow most servers to be virtualized in less than
30 minutes
-- Upgrading to the latest version of StorageCraft
-- Improving/Upgrading Hardware Specs
-- A New web interface with detailed reporting
CharTec "Hardware as a Service" (HaaS) program helps technology companies transition to the next level of annuity-based profitability as Managed Service Providers. CharTec Partners can increase their customers' productivity and reduce overall costs using the program because hardware and service costs are no longer an obstacle - workstations, servers, firewalls, 24x7 helpdesk, even VOIP, are easily acquired. CharTec even goes "Beyond HaaS" by providing private labeled hardware, professional sales and technical training and a tool that allows Partners to price offerings in less than 5 minutes. CharTec is the winner of three Channel Insider Bull's Eye Awards, Business Solutions Magazine Innovator of the Year Award for 2009, and Best Channel Vendor in 2011, CompTIA Best Product in 2010 as well as part of the Inc. 5000. UMHS Selects Interactive System for New Children's, Women's Hospital
New C.S. Mott Children's Hospital and Von Voigtlander Women's Hospital will use GetWellNetwork system for patient education and safety
ANN ARBOR, Mich., April 4, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Patients at the new C.S. Mott Children's Hospital will have access to a new patient education, entertainment and interactive patient care tools system that will keep them and their families engaged and informed throughout their stay at the new hospital.
The University of Michigan Health System partnered with GetWellNetwork, Inc. of Bethesda, Md., to implement the bedside interactive system GetWell Town for use at the new 348-bed children's hospital. GetWellNetwork will also implement the system at Von Voigtlander Women's Hospital, the premier perinatal and birth center located within Mott. The new hospital complex opens November 2011.
"GetWell Town was chosen for its innovative and effective approach to engaging children and families into the care process," says Loree Collett, administrative director of Children's and Women's Services at the University of Michigan Health System.
The 46" flat panel monitors displaying the GetWellNetwork System in the patient rooms will enable clinicians, Child and Family Life program staff, and other members of the care team to interact and communicate with their patients and families.
"When patients and families are well-informed and engaged in their care, they have less anxiety or fear about their health condition and hospital stay plus they're better prepared to continue with their care plans after discharge -- improving outcomes," says Collett. "GetWellNetwork's comprehensive and flexible digital platform fits perfectly with our vision of a modern, innovative health care environment that focuses on personalized patient care throughout the care continuum."
GetWell Town's communication system allows clinicians and staff to overlay TV or movie programs with important patient safety alerts, Child and Family Life Program events, and other hospital information like a "Question of the Day" to help patients become active participants in their care. In addition, patients will have a broad range of entertainment features such as TV, movies, internet service, gaming, and music.
Kelly Parent, mother of a former Mott patient who leads the UMHS Patient and Family Centered Care Program, said the system will provide a necessary and critical distraction for hospitalized children.
"The Internet, on-demand movies, familiar games and music channels will really help to make kids feel a little more normal in a world of hospitals and pokes that is not very normal at all," she says.
Her daughter Jessica, who has been a patient at Mott, had a chance to test the system before it was purchased. "I love the Internet connection and on-demand movies," she says. "The Internet is a great way to keep up with what's going on outside of the hospital and the movies help to pass the time."
Another unique feature of GetWell Town is the KidsHealth education content that is developed for both younger children and teen patients. Parents will have their own set of tools to learn about their child's diagnosis, prescribed medicines, and upcoming surgeries ensuring that families are well-prepared to support their child's individualized needs and care plan.
At the Von Voigtlander Women's Hospital, GetWellNetwork will provide patients a wide range of features and amenities to ensure patient safety and comfort during their stay. By enabling women to use the GetWellNetwork from their bedside TV, they will learn, at their own pace, about after-birthing care for themselves and their newborn. It also gives nurses the ability to reinforce safety education that will reduce the risk of falls and complications post-surgery and birth.
The partnership will be the first to deliver IPTV technology (Internet Protocol TV) with the GetWellNetwork system. IPTV uses the existing hospital data network for crisp, clear delivery of television and allows location flexibility for future expansion throughout UMHS facilities.

LG Cinema 3D Technology Faces Off at NCAA® 2011 Men's Final Four®
HOUSTON, April 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Next-generation 3D TV technology is a slam-dunk, according to LG Electronics USA, which hosted a side-by-side comparison of competing 3D TV technologies in Houston during the NCAA® 2011 Men's Final Four®.
LG Electronics USA, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, offered ticket holders the opportunity to experience LG Cinema 3D at the NCAA "Tip-off Tailgate presented by Infiniti®" event outside Reliant Stadium. Rivalling the excitement of a buzzer-beating three-pointer, fans were invited to participate in the ultimate game-off, where they tested their own basketball skills and compared LG Cinema 3D to conventional 3D.
Peter Reiner, senior vice president, marketing, LG Electronics USA, said, "LG Cinema 3D TV delivers exactly what fans are looking for - an easy, affordable way to watch 3D sporting events in beautiful high def with friends and family from virtually anywhere in their living room."
Seeing is Believing
Final Four attendees compared the difference between LG's Cinema 3D technology and conventional 3D in a unique Championship Game created specifically for the festivities in Houston. Fans watched LG's Cinema 3D technology and then viewed conventional 3D with its active glasses. Each person then chose which they preferred by shooting a basketball into the corresponding basket. Participants also had a chance to win their very own LG Cinema 3D HDTV.
LG Cinema recreates the 3D movie theater viewing experience with lightweight, comfortable and reasonably priced eyewear, and delivers crisp bright images and a wide viewing angle. In an LG consumer perception study, participants preferred LG Cinema 3D 3 to 1 versus LG's 2010 active 3D technology.
Better 3D TV Experience
LG Cinema 3D uses a similar 3D technology as employed in movie theaters. Because the glasses do not need to sync with an emitter, viewers can watch from nearly any angle in the room. The reasonable cost of the glasses also makes it easier to buy as many pairs as needed to host family and friends for a 3D sports night.
At the heart of LG Cinema 3D is Film Patterned Retarder (FPR) display technology, pioneered by LG Electronics' joint venture LG Display. FPR technology optimizes the separation of images for the left and right eye, recombining them through the glasses to create 3D images with reduced cross-talk. LG's 3D Light Boost, a thin film covering the screen, creates brighter 3D images for a superior 3D viewing experience by helping to counteract dimness that can occur with 3D content.
The NCAA Tip-off Tailgate, attended by tens of thousands of college basketball and 3D TV fans, was open to game-ticket holders only.

NEW YORK, April 4, 2011/PRNewswire/ -- Breakthrough, a global human rights organization, announces the launch of the groundbreaking Facebook-based game "America 2049" (Twitter hashtag #2049), in which players actively explore how the choices and challenges Americans now face will shape the future of the country, its democratic values and how we define ourselves as a nation. The game features appearances by Harold Perrineau (LOST), Victor Garber (Alias), Cherry Jones (24), Anthony Rapp (Rent) and Margaret Cho (Notorious C.H.O.), who generously donated their time and talents to help Breakthrough put a human face on complex social issues. America 2049 is the first Facebook game to integrate the social networking platform with many other resources, online and off: multimedia and interactive features, clues planted across the Internet and real-life events at leading cultural institutions nationwide, including International Coalition of Sites of Conscience members the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and the Bosque Redondo Memorial in New Mexico. (The game trailer appears here: http://tinyurl.com/3tp3f3e.)
"America 2049" players are activated as agents for the Council on American Heritage, headed by Jefferson Williams II (Garber), and are tasked with the capture of alleged terrorist Ken Asaba (Perrineau). As the game unfolds and players make high-stakes decisions, they are immersed in a divided America of the near future: splintered by race and ethnicity, hostile to women, sexuality, and self-expression. "America 2049" challenges players to ask: how close are we already to America 2049 -- and how can we work together, in real life, to build a better future?
"'America 2049' entertains and enlightens about the real-world issues of acceptance and tolerance," said Harold Perrineau. "The project resonated with me because I love the idea of people fighting at all costs for their right to pursue the life they choose without fear of persecution. I hope that through playing 'America 2049,' young people in particular will be inspired to help stop institutionalized hatred and intolerance -- today."
"'America 2049' is literally a game-changer," said Breakthrough President & CEO Mallika Dutt. "It parachutes us into an alternate reality perhaps not so far from our own, where we find America poised at a crossroads, and where we are asked to make critical decisions about how we truly want to define ourselves as a nation. The game experience allows us to immerse ourselves in a future that could be -- but also inspires us to envision, and recommit to, a real America built on pluralism, democracy, dignity, equality and human rights for all."
"By placing 'America 2049' on Facebook, Breakthrough is using one of the Web's most popular cultural platforms to create the possibility of changing culture itself," added Breakthrough multimedia director Heidi Boisvert. Boisvert served as "America 2049" creative director and producer, working with the award-winning Andrea Phillips as lead writer and co-game designer, and with Pennsylvania-based Inovat on game strategy, development and design.
Over 12 weeks, "America 2049" players will take on missions and face challenges based on human rights themes including immigration, race, sexual orientation, sex trafficking, religion, labor, national security and more. They will unlock puzzles and clues via videos, voice-overs, graphics, micro-sites and social media. Leading cultural organizations nationwide -- most of them members of the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience -- will host events linked to topics raised in the game. These sites, which use history to open conversations on today's pressing social issues, include (for event dates, please contact Breakthrough directly):
-- Jane Addams Hull-House Museum (Chicago, IL)
-- Lower East Side Tenement Museum (New York, NY)
-- United States Immigration Station, Angel Island (San Francisco, CA)

Grapevine Technologies Provides Social Media Solution: "The Vine"
DALLAS, April 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Churches are not traditionally early adopters. Yet, to remain relevant and capitalize on opportunities to share the gospel, many churches are breaking with tradition and are quickly adopting new viral technologies, such as The Vine, that allow for 24/7 contact with members and evangelizing outside of the church.
Millions of church members have become avid users of social media; therefore, many Churches have become actively involved with social networking platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. While a generally accepted medium for marketing activities, church leaders have been reluctant to use public social media tools for core, communications due to privacy and safety concerns. Offensive advertising messages, inappropriate content for children and recent reports of poisoned Web links are also problematic for churches. These concerns have led to the next evolution in social media--private social networks.
In response to the growing need for a safe and secure social media platform, Dallas-based Grapevine Technologies is the first company to create a customized, private solution which helps build "true communities" for churches. Its initial product, The Vine, provides each church a walled garden which fosters communication, sharing, giving and collaboration among church leaders and members.
"Grapevine Technologies is proud to offer a social network solution that will enable churches to freely communicate without the concerns of outside distractions," said founder, Rafael Simpson. "We have taken a great deal of time during the development stages to listen to church leaders regarding the desired functionality of the platform. It was important to me on both a personal and business level to deliver a product that will equip churches to function more efficiently and effectively."
Churches and other nonprofit organizations have been severely impacted by the prolonged economic recession. Yet, online giving is on the rise. In a report by the Nonprofit Research Collaborative, in 2010 nearly 75% of charitable groups surveyed reported online or Internet giving. Among those reporting, 58% saw an increase in giving. Whether tithing to the church or donating to humanitarian causes such as the Japanese earthquake/tsunami disaster, The Vine allows for easy online giving. Understanding the current financial strain on churches, Grapevine Technologies included functions which generate income beyond traditional tithes and offerings. The Vine offers a versatile ecommerce platform that allows for revenue generation through a local business directory, classified ads and postings for jobs and events. According to Henry Dittmer, Chief Operating Officer and a communication software veteran with extensive experience developing, deploying and managing technology, "The Vine offers a secure, customized solution with a rich feature set and organizational management tools. As active church members, however, we also understood the importance of creating an option that addresses the financial needs of the churches as well."
"Grapevine Technologies has delivered a unique communications platform for today's churches--and we are continuing to expand upon our technology to address their needs for tomorrow," concluded Dittmer.
Eutelsat Announces New Contract Between Skylogic and French Internet Service Provider Sat2way for New-Generation Broadband via KA-SAT
PARIS, April 4, 2011/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Eutelsat Communications (Euronext Paris: ETL) today announced a new
contract between its Skylogic broadband subsidiary and the French Internet
service provider Sat2Way for distribution, from mid-2011, of the Tooway(TM)
new-generation broadband service on the KA-SAT satellite. The agreement
builds on a long-term collaboration, since early 2008, when Sat2Way launched
the first-generation Tooway(TM) service using Ka-band capacity on Eutelsat's
HOT BIRD(TM) 6 satellite.
The four-year contract, worth an initial EUR4 million, allows Sat2Way to
offer a range of Tooway(TM) packages with broadband speeds of up to 10 Mbps.
With over 3,000 subscription requests registered in the first
two weeks of pre-sales efforts for the next generation Tooway(TM) service,
Sat2Way expects to exceed its objectives. According to the latest analysis by
IDATE, approximately 400,000 French homes, that are mainly located in rural
and suburban areas, are not eligible for ADSL, highlighting the potential of
satellite broadband in Sat2Way's home market.
Welcoming the new partnership with Eutelsat, Stephane Ruelle,
founder of Sat2Way, said: "We have consistently believed in the market for
satellite Internet and are convinced that consumer broadband services using
Ka-band frequencies represent a compelling offer. Sat2Way selected Tooway(TM)
as soon as it was available because Skylogic proposed a long-term strategy,
using HOT BIRD(TM) 6 in advance of KA-SAT. The economic model of KA-SAT now
positions us to offer a highly competitive range of broadband services to
consumers in France, Belgium, and Spain who are unable to access the Internet
via terrestrial networks."
Arduino Patacchini, CEO of Skylogic added: "We are delighted
with the extension of our commercial agreement with Sat2Way, a longstanding
partner and one of the top 10 distributors of Tooway(TM) in Europe. This new
contract, and the interest that our new service is already generating, is
further proof of the demand for competitive, high speed satellite broadband
services across Europe, and the viability of our KA-SAT programme."
Launched in December 2010, and with total capacity of more
than 70 Gbps, KA-SAT will usher in a new era of competitively-priced
satellite-delivered services for homes and businesses across Europe and the
Mediterranean Basin. KA-SAT uses next-generation two-way wireless Ka-band
spotbeam technology, which lowers the cost of providing high-bandwidth access
to the Internet. The complete KA-SAT infrastructure, comprising the satellite
and a network of eight gateways across Europe connected to the Internet via a
fibre backbone ring, will enter service in mid-2011.
The user equipment for Tooway(TM) comprises a small satellite dish and a
modem connected to the PC via the Ethernet, giving immediate and always-on
Internet access following simple installation. The service can also deliver
Voice over IP, and Direct-to-Home television.
Tooway(TM) is delivered across Europe via a network of
certified distributors who have the flexibility to offer packages for
consumers, home workers and businesses with speeds, volumes and prices to
match their local market demands.
Sat2way is a French company, set up in 2003, and specialising in the
distribution of high-speed satellite Internet access packages in France and
Europe. http://www.sat2way.fr

GoPro Launches 3D HERO® System; World's Smallest 1080p 3D Camera. Professional Quality at a Consumer Price.
Innovative Modular Design Enables Consumers to Combine two 1080p HD HERO Cameras to Create Professional Quality 3D Camera System.
HALF MOON BAY, Calif., April 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- GoPro, the world's leading activity camera company, today announced the availability of the much anticipated 3D HERO® System, a waterproof 3D expansion kit for GoPro's best selling 1080p HD HERO camera. The 3D HERO System is available immediately at GoPro.com and is shipping to GoPro retailers worldwide with an MSRP of $99.99.
The 3D HERO System has an industry-first modular design that enables consumers to combine two 1080p HD HERO cameras to form a single 1080p 3D camera, the world's smallest and least expensive one at that. Waterproof to 180 feet, the 3D HERO System can be worn on the body, mounted on gear and vehicles, and used as a handheld camera. A dual-camera, polycarbonate, waterproof housing holds the two cameras together and a synchronization cable plugs into the back of each camera, enabling them to function as a single camera. A single shutter button controls both cameras.
"The 3D HERO System is exciting for a lot of reasons, one of them being that it's not just a 3D camera. It's really several cameras in one, depending on how the consumer wants to use it," says Nicholas Woodman, GoPro's founder and CEO. "That you can take two GoPro cameras that you would normally use independently and combined them to form a new type of camera, a 3D camera...that's extremely cool. GoPro is excited to be the first company to build a camera this versatile."
"In addition to being a top selling consumer camera, the HD HERO camera is used by more professional production crews in the broadcast and film industry than any other camera in its class," adds Woodman. "We expect the 3D HERO System to further establish the HD HERO as one of the most versatile cameras in the world."
The 3D HERO System housing is only 5 inches (130mm) in length and 2.5 inches high (62mm) and is compatible with existing GoPro mounting accessories.
The 3D HERO System includes:
-- 3D HERO Waterproof Housing
-- 3D HERO Synchronization Cable
-- Skeleton Door (allows for optimal sound capture in dry environments)
-- 3 Pairs of 3D Anaglyph (Red/Blue) Glasses
-- Helmet Front Mount
-- 2 Flat and 2 Curved Adhesive Mounts
-- Free Download: GoPro CineForm Studio 3D editing software
GoPro's 1080p HD HERO cameras are not included with the 3D HERO System and are sold separately, starting at $259.99 per camera.

Announced on March 30, GoPro acquired CineForm, a leading video compression software company famous in the film and broadcast industry for their high quality compression and editing applications. GoPro's CineForm Studio software is a direct extension of CineForm's award winning professional applications and puts the power of Hollywood-caliber 2D and 3D editing in the hands of consumers.
Professional Options for Professional Content Creators: GoPro CineForm Codec
GoPro's professional customers will appreciate that in addition to being able to export YouTube friendly H.264 video files, CineForm Studio can also export video files using the GoPro CineForm codec. The GoPro CineForm codec is a professional quality video codec that allows for lossless 2D and 3D video editing in a variety of leading editing programs such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Apple Final Cut Pro, Avid Media Composer, and Sony Vegas, as well as Apple iMovie and Windows Movie Maker. Used by Hollywood pros to create films such as Oscar winner Slumdog Millionaire, the GoPro CineForm codec is included as a part of the free CineForm Studio download from gopro.com.
GoPro 3D Center: The How, What, and Rad of 3D Content Creation
To help consumers understand how much fun it is to capture and create 3D content, GoPro has developed an online information resource - GoPro 3D Center. This online resource features written and video tutorials about 3D in general, how to capture incredible content with the 3D HERO System as well as how to view your 3D content on your laptop, online at YouTube, and on 2D or 3D TVs. Complete product specifications, instructions and system requirements can also be found in the GoPro 3D Center at http://www.gopro.com/3d-overview

Cell Phone Radiation Safety Advocate and FCC Regulatory Watchdog Cynthia Franklin Announces Launch of Consumer Information Website
SEATTLE, April 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Cell phone radiation safety advocate and FCC regulatory watchdog Cynthia Franklin announces launch of consumer information website. Called "Lab Rat 4 SAR" - http://www.LabRat4sar.com, the site provides facts and commentary about the outdated federal policies and unfettered industry practices regarding cell phone radiation (SAR).
"Cell phone manufacturers are not informing consumers about a crucial radiation safety warning legally required by the FCC. And the FCC, the federal regulatory agency overseeing the industry, is doing nothing about it," claims Franklin. She became involved in this issue after discovering a radiation safety disclosure hidden in the fine print on her BlackBerry cell phone manufacturer's website that warned a user to never hold or carry the phone closer than 1" from her body. This warning did not appear in the literature that accompanied her phone.
The FCC allows all cell phones to be tested for compliance with federal radiation guidelines positioned up to 1" away from the testing body in a holster, failing to account for the typical manner in which many consumers use and carry their phones: in a pocket. To make a call with a phone in a pocket using an earpiece exposes the user to radiation levels that exceed the legal FCC federal safety limit.
In Michael Scherer's October 26, 2010 TIME article, "Cell Phone Safety: What the FCC Didn't Test", an unnamed FCC official admitted, "Clearly if it's tested in a holster, it's only guaranteed to be compliant if it's used with a holster."
Because of this "loophole" in the FCC radiation compliance testing procedure, all cell phone manufacturers are required to inform consumers to never carry or use the phone closer than the "separation distance" from the body. However, it is the industry-wide practice to hide these crucial warnings in technical fine print in obscure locations within the user guide. Franklin launched the website to inform consumers of this warning, as well as to expose the outdated and inadequate policies she has uncovered at the FCC related to regulatory oversight of cell phone radiation.
Cynthia Franklin vows to continue writing articles, emailing officials and lobbying legislators until obsolete FCC radiation testing procedures are modified AND until the industry complies with FCC federal requirements to inform consumers about radiation safety guidelines. Texas Instruments first semiconductor company to license EtherCAT® technology for embedded ARM®- and DSP+ARM-based devices
-- New license demonstrates TI's commitment to industrial markets
-- TI implementation of EtherCAT technology allows design flexibility as industrial standards evolve
-- TI devices featuring EtherCAT technology coming in 4Q 2011
HANNOVER, Germany, April 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- In conjunction with Hannover Faire, the world's largest industrial trade show, Texas Instruments (TI) (NYSE: TXN) demonstrates its commitment to the industrial market and announces it is the first semiconductor company to license Ethernet for Control Automation Technology (EtherCAT®) for its ARM®- and DSP+ARM-based embedded processors. This new, ground-breaking industrial Ethernet technology will be featured in TI's upcoming Sitara(TM) ARM microprocessors (MPUs) planned for the beginning of the fourth quarter of 2011 and in TI's C6-Integra(TM) DSP+ARM processors beginning in 2012.
Benefits of EtherCAT technology
-- Increases efficiency: EtherCAT technology is based on the principle of
fast processing on the fly. EtherCAT messages are passed from node to
node and processed while they are passed, which improves speed and
efficiency in industrial systems. Overall industrial application
performance is also improved with shorter reaction times, enabling
increased operational efficiency.
-- Ease of use: EtherCAT uses the standard IEEE 802.3 frames and physical
layer. No external switches or hubs are necessary because the EtherCAT
slave controllers forward the frames automatically. Most devices embed
two RJ-45 ports, which are commonly utilized data ports for Ethernet
connections. Auto-configuration of the EtherCAT technology is
supported. No manual address setting is required and no network tuning
is needed.
-- Lowers costs: With the use of standard cabling and no external hubs or
switches needed, this lowers the EtherCAT technology costs. There are
also lower configuration costs with the auto-configuration support.
Benefits of TI embedded ARM-based solutions:
-- Integration: System-on-chip solution based on TI's most advanced
silicon technology, integrating the EtherCAT slave controller. This
on-chip integration allows the user to be tightly coupled to the
application processor which provides high throughput, low latency
access, board space savings and lower total costs.
-- Flexibility: The programmable real-time unit (PRU) allows for flexible
implementation that can more easily adapt as industrial standards evolve
over time.
"The EtherCAT Protocol technology sets new standards for the real-time performance and flexibility that are critical for TI's embedded ARM-based devices geared toward the industrial market. With its popularity today in industrial drive and input/output applications, EtherCAT, a leading industrial communication protocol, is used to allow master and slave controllers to communicate with each other without a host computer in high-noise industrial environments," said Ram Sathappan, industrial automation manager, TI. "The TI approach to EtherCAT with the programmable real-time unit (PRU) on TI's Sitara ARM MPUs and C6-Integra DSP + ARM processors allows for flexible implementation that can more easily adapt as industrial standards evolve over time."
"With TI's integration of an EtherCAT interface in several product lines, this turns EtherCAT into a mainstream technology beyond the automation world," Martin Rostan, executive director, EtherCAT Technology Group. "We are thrilled about this milestone development which will open entirely new markets for EtherCAT and help EtherCAT to establish a strong position in a wide range of embedded applications, further accelerating the adoption of EtherCAT in the industrial market."

Deploys Cisco TelePresence as Part of University's IP Transformation
OSWEGO, N.Y., April 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Students and faculty at the State University of New York at Oswego will be able to interact with experts across the world without ever having to leave campus - thanks to an immersive video solution provided by Verizon.
As part of a three-year, $3.5 million initiative intended to transform the campus infrastructure by using Internet Protocol technologies, Verizon is working to bring the benefits of unified communications and collaboration (UC&C) to the college, including deploying Cisco TelePresence technology on the main campus in Oswego and at the SUNY Oswego Metro Center in Syracuse. Immersive video goes far beyond traditional video conferencing by replicating face-to-face interaction so realistically that it feels as though everyone is in the same room, even though they may be hundreds or thousands of miles apart.
"A major benefit of the new system is its ability to deliver new academic offerings via high-quality video, while allowing us to tie into other telepresence locations across the country - or around the globe -- providing access to outside experts and opening the college up to numerous distance learning opportunities," said Joe Moreau, SUNY Oswego's chief technology officer. "At the same time, using video will support the college's sustainability efforts by helping to reduce travel between campuses and the carbon emissions associated with it. The opportunities are tremendous."
SUNY Oswego, with 8,300 students and 1,195 full-time faculty and staff, stretches for almost 700 acres and includes 58 buildings along Lake Ontario. Oswego is one of 13 university colleges in the 64-campus SUNY system, offering more than 110 majors ranging from accounting to zoology as well as cooperative and graduate programs.
In addition to telepresence, the new IP-based communications platform will enable Voice Over IP (VoIP) and video, as well as advanced call center operations for better customer service.
